Back in the day, we used to build desktop computers because they were so much cheaper then laptops or prebuilt computers.

This is a pretty good deal.

    Qhd as well

    Very good deal 😎

      Thx for the specs 👍

Anyone know if RAM and SSD can be added?

Would like another 16GB (dual channel) and at least an additional 500GB M.2

      • +3

I think this is the same one or a similar model looks to have 2 sodimm slots and 2 NVMe slots.
You'll need to replace the RAM with 2x16GB kit for more memory. Adding a second NVMe shouldn't be an issue

Just checked HP education store as well and it's like 2749 without any codes (unsure if there is any floating around)

So this is a solid price for Qhd 3ms 165hz screen and beast full laptop 3080 power

      Very tempted 🤣

    • Anyone knows the max independent displays for this lappy?

  • 1 year warranty on it is concerning - do they not have much confidence in it?

Other then that looks top notch

    • +2

Sadly, I think that's standard with anything electronics :(
We're left neglected in every field unless we go out of our way to purchase their "extended warranty".

        • -5

Sorry, I'm not bothered enough to watch it, waht does returns have to do with things?
even then there are laws in place to protect the business, you can't just return things whenever you'd like. There's laws and a system in place, also TOS that you agree to at the point of purchase that mostly protect the business and outline their policies, in accordance with the local law, that is.

Would you make a point beyond me listening to their boring skits?

          • +8

@The Milk Man: a reasonable consumer would expect a $2500 laptop to last greater than one year

            https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…
The consumer guarantees which apply regardless of any warranties suppliers sell or give to you, apply for a reasonable time depending on the nature of the goods or services. This means consumer guarantees may continue to apply after the time period for the warranty has expired.

            • -6

@dm02: I'm sure the greater minds of HP and other companies had already figured it out.
How do we know what's considered reasonable? varies, my reason may be unreasonable to the majority and VV.

Perhaps , at the expense of constantly pumping out new laptop models, they can argue that in their opinion a reasonable time for a laptop to live is less a year even, and that they're doing us a favor by extending it.

Idk about you, I wouldn't want to challenge their lawyers in court over $2,000.
They can also argue you've agreed to their Warranty Policy when you made the purchase, it has been outlined to you, and you agreed to it, which means you agreed to their narrative as for how long it should live.

At the end of the day, best thing you can do is pay with PayPal and convince some 20-30yo that the big evil company have wronged you.
              Saved me plenty.

              edit;
Also, they could argue that they'll be happy to service it past the 1 year warranty, is just aht their agreement outlines that they'll cover certain defects in that timeframe, any time past, they'll happily service it, at your expense.

@The Milk Man: There are easier ways to let people know you don't understand Australia's consumer laws mate.

              • +9

@The Milk Man: You’re wrong. People can and do petition to have things repaired for free under consumer law all the time, it’s just unfortunate not everyone knows about it. You don’t need to take them to court for it to happen, in most cases simply stating the laws and requesting the repair is enough if they initially reject the claim. However should you need further assistance that’s when you reach out to the ACCC and they do the legwork.

Please stop spreading misinformation and discouraging people from pursuing their consumer rights.

                • +6

@Yekul: My bad, neither did I intend to misinform anyone.

                  Happy to learn, sorry :D

              • +1

@The Milk Man: its not what HP considers to be reasonable, its what an average joe to be considered reasonable.

Pull any average joe off the street and tell them this 2.5k laptop is expected to only last one year, see how they react.

              • @The Milk Man: Yes, the greater minds at HP have figured it out - they've adjusted their Australian prices on the basis that a certain portion of the population will take advantage of the Australian consumer laws :)

          • +3

@The Milk Man: TL;DR the ACCC consumer laws

      • ACL has your back :)

What's the TDP on the 3080?

    • +1

Information on this model is pretty scarce, but looks to be 165W

      • Thanks. Pretty good if it is. I couldn't find it when googling for it

    • +3

For the RTX 3080 It's 150W(+15W boost). It's mentioned in this review

  • And anyone seen the capacity on the battery?

  • +1

Had no idea 3080 on laptops has 16GB Vram!

    • Some 3080 laptops have only 8GB VRAM

    • Doesnt look like its GDDR6X though..

    • 3080 laptop version is pretty much a 3070 desktop

  • Good as a desktop replacement.
Expect this to be plugged in to power outlet most of the time

  • -3

That 3080 probably equivalent to desktop 3060 or less

    • 3070 depending on power rating…lots of reviews out there on what the mobile gpus are equivalent to.

  • +2

A quality laptop for $700 more than the cost of a RTX3080 desktop card

    • Or double the price of a equivalent 3070 desktop card

  • I guess most here still prefer a Lenovo laptop instead …

    • +3

Never had a good experience with HP

  • +8

    I recently bought the omen 16 with a 3060 and i7-11800h

    looks and feels great, but:
    - consistently crashed after a few minutes of gaming
    - arrived with no external packaging (just the laptop box) and the box was full of holes (questionable courier choice?)
    - battery life was roughly 2 hours
    - support was appalling

so I ended up returning it, because a gaming laptop that crashes when gaming is no good

I don't think HP is ready with their OMEN's this year.

3080 sounds exciting alright, but nah, HP assassinated my patience and blew their quota for a couple years to come

great price for a 3080, but good luck getting a solid unit and good support.

    • What was the price you paid for that config?

      • $2190 something via education store

  • Look at the size of the 330W power brick that comes with this laptop!

    • Surely you're not lugging around a 17" gaming laptop, and if you're using a 17" as a desktop replacement, the power brick size doesn't really matter.

      • +1

Yeah, but doesn't mean it needs to be comically large and the size of a Mac mini.

        • +1

yeah true, now that I look at it reminds me of a NUC lol

    • Wtf is that hahaha 🤣 Jesus that's massive

  • Is it powerful enough for VR?

  • Wow this is nice. but i have a Legion 5i Pro Gen 6 16" Intel Stingray 3070 i can resell it and buy this? is that a good idea? and likely wont lose much

  • I'd stick with MSI or Asus. Lenovo is okay too.

  • Too heavy.
300w adapter brick means no USB-C charger option.

  • 14 people have purchased this today

    74 upvotes, 14 purchases

    • 75 upvotes now. Good deal and if I hadn't purchased the Lenovo legion 7 a few months back I'd have jumped on this.

      • +2

        I'd have jumped on this.

        That's impressive build quality.

        • I'd definitely jump on that 330w power brick no problem there

could probably kill a cat if tumbles accidentally off the desk

    • how do you see only 14 people brought it?

      • opened the link on desktop, it says so

    • +1

That's quite standard - the upvotes simply represent someone's opinion that it is a good deal. It doesn't represent purchases.

(I'm only here doing research on laptops by reading the comments - so I don't know if this is a good deal or not, hence no +/- vote from me.)

      • yeah, it's just first time I could see the number of purchases to compare

usually I only upvote if I bought myself, but there are exceptions to that rule

  • There was a pop up window to enter your email address and get 10% coupon but I accidentally closed it.

    • It's not eligible on any promotions or discounts 😞

  • +1

You can use 2.5% shopback with this, takes $58.61 off.

  • Mines already shipped, got tracking number but its not showing on website yet

    • Same, has yours started working yet?

  • Just ordered one of the 17" and one of the 16" and it said success, but 3 minutes later it's saying both cancelled. WTF, not impressed if they pull that stunt.

  • +1

    ew HP…

    • Is that some sort of bad omen?

  • My first ever laptop was a HP Pavilion DV5, purchased around 2008 and 14 years later it still works!

Hope newer models still have that level of reliability.

  • +1

Received today. Happy with how it performs so far.

    • That's hot

Mine is incoming . Any tips or learnings please do share

Was tempted to get legion pro but the price difference too much

      • It runs mid 60c on a cooling pad while playing games which is a lot better than my previous omen 17 which ran low 80c. Agreed, the price was too good to pass up.

        • price back to 4200

  • Got mine today but not at home to open it

    • want me to open it for you?

  • So I opened it and got it, the keyboard layout is strange. the power button looks like its a normal botton on the keyboard, right next to delete, hopefully no one presses it by mistake..
the screen is very wobblily which is scary.
it also has G sync but you need to make the 3080 the main GPU

    • do you think you got dud? ill test mine when it arrives

      • no its just how its made with the hidges
also there is a fan whine, coil whine or something, its in youtube vids so thats normal.

  • Just opened mine and the first thing I saw was a couple of dead pixels, will be returning/exchanging it.

    • How to test it

      • Google dead pixel test laptop

        • thank u friendy

  • I ordered 2 hours before deal closed. It arrived this morning.
    It is a beautiful beast.

    • +2

Did you turn it on? Or did it turn you on
      You beautiful beast 😍

      • the laptop turn him/her into beast

        • Are you getting my story confused with the plot from the movie "Electric Dreams" ?

  • Mine was delivered

The IPS glow in the dark seems a bit much on some edges.
Looks good tho. Fan definitely does whirl just with using windows

  • Had to read up on bleed vs IPS glow

How is your screens when black and in the dark?

  • Great laptop when it works! Sadly I had to return my unit due to random hang ups and restarts. Hope everyone else's is running well.

  • Mine is great, but possible flakey touchpad

    • Seems to be an issue with this model - I'm going to return mine.

  • mines fine but some weird sound issues like sometimes is soft then randomly gets louder not sure how to fix that

    • Same issue lol feels like the fan is always up and down

      • i said sound not fan

        • sorry my friend - forgive me
