@cadwalader: Personal experience with churning between different providers is that it depends on the new provider - the good ones are very fast to start provisioning once the NBN connection switches, say within minutes (eg AussieBB). For smaller providers I've had the connection switched at NBN, but then takes a few hours for the new provider to have their systems to start provisioning. However I would say in 95% of the cases this would be done within 3 hours, by noon.

If someone is working from home obviously this is not acceptable so I would plug a 4G phone into the router and use the cellular connection until the broadband returns to normal. Or just open a hotspot wifi tether from the phone. Have a backup ready then you can do this with minimal transitional anxiety.

        • I have fttp so the effort is minimal and absolutely zero downtime. Don't know about other tech types :(

  • So i could get 2 free months of 1000mbps internet (im on FTTH) and then just bail?

    • +1

      yes you can.

      • +2

Awesome! Good Spot! Just signed up :D
I must admit, I feel a little bad for leaving AussieBB.

First company in a long time that has drawn some loyalty out of me.

        • -4

if enough people keeps churning away AussieBB doesn't that mean their strategy in providing good customer service and solid connection is not being valued by customers? So in the longer term they will be forced to drop their quality to keep the cost low just like their competitors?

difficulty in product differentiation is a problem for NBN

          • +2

@CoronavirusVaccine: I think we at Ozb are in the minority when it comes to constant churns for the best deals, all my mates signup and never leave and that's the norm for the vast majority of people

            • +4

@Irishness: agree, it takes a certain kind of personality and dedication to try to take advantage of these things…. and the benefit aren't usually as big as the seem as it doesn't take into account of the personal time involved to do the churning.

              • @CoronavirusVaccine: yeah this is my first churn in 18 months with superloop and I'll probably go back again

              • @CoronavirusVaccine: 5 minutes to cancel existing nbn
5 minutes to sign up new nbn
30 seconds to change ports on NTD

                • +1

@haru: the time to cancel existing nbn vary a lot. I can testify in one recent instance I spent more than 20min (including waiting time) for this particular provider. Admittedly most closure requests with other providers take less than 10min.

                  • @CoronavirusVaccine: I never wait. I do it through email. If they refuse to do it online, I ask them to call me. If they refuse that, they will call me when I start a TIO dispute.

  • Set-up charges?

    • +1

none. only modem costs if you want one.

      • I’m with Floptus NBN. Do Floptus or NBN own the modem?

  • +1

    Doesn’t state upload speeds.
    Is it 100/40?

    • +1

pretty sure its 100/20. origin plans seem to be $5 off aussiebb plans.

      • What a joke. I get 100/40 with Optus and only pay $75 a month

        • Optus website says $109 per month for 100/40. Are you sure they're not just discounting your NBN because your overpaying for a mobile service with them?

  • +1

Thanks op just signed up. also scored extra $10 off per month when fees start kicking in as an existing Origin customer.

    • +1

same but with NG gas only.

their $100 referral credit seems pretty decent, alhought i couldnt get it to activate for myself, maybe because i dont have an elec plan with them (ReVamped ftw!) but i dont think i wouldve qualified

  • +3

It says total minimum charge $104 on the order review page.. does this mean you MUST pay for at least one month of the service?

  • thanks op. just signed up from tangerine…although i'm in my 6 month period, a saving of $110 over 2 months for 5 mins of work cannot be neglected

    • -4

man, 6 month period, you are bleeding too much

  • Does it allow you to connect at a later date?

    • +3

      Yes, It does.

  • I'm currently with dodo 1 month free. Can I hop on to this for 2 months free and cancel?

    • +1

Same. I’ve signed up with start date as end of March. Hope all goes well.

      • +6

if it all goes well, that means I'll get 6 months free internet hahaha

        2 months - Swoop internet
        1 month - Aussie Broadband
        1 month - Dodo
        2 months - Origin

        WOO HOO!

    • me too, Free 100 Mbps for months now :D

  • can you use the referral in conjunction

  • Can’t get at my address even though I have Superloop FTTP, see ya

  • Any credit check?

    • +1

good question, doesn't ask for a DL or anything just your personal details and whether you own or rent

    • +1

as far as I know there isn't one

    • Naa didn't seem like it, can't see why either since it's basically a "pre-paid" product.

  • Edit comment: can add landline via $10 charge!

  • +2

Thanks OP, just got 2 free months moving from AussieBB free month and will churn over later on this month. Thx OzBargain for getting me 3 months free internet on 100/20 plans!

  • Which is a decent 50/20 provider to switch to after availing this deal provided no other signup offer comes along? Presently on 1 month free AussieBB but not too keen to pay $79/mon for 50/20.

    • +2

      superloop 6mth discounted (no lockin)

  • how do i avoid getting charged for the 3rd month, when they will charged me after 1.5 months, ie they will bill in advance?

    • Cancel it at the beginning of second month. Also use prepaid Visa card as payment method!

  • +1

it is a minimum of 1 month charge to get 2 months free in total 3 months I assume

    • Maybe it is the second and third months free.

  • +4

It says: If you sign up during the Offer Period, you will receive your first two months of internet at no charge.

    • let's hope so, plenty I read showing min charge

  • +1

anyone previously churned to Origin know typical timescale for hfc?

    • +1

well my internet is off superloop has sms saying I've switched but no confirmation sms it's active from origin

[EDITED] hfc approx 30min downtime for churn, new service active

      • Did you have to ring superloop to cancel? Reckon it'd be the same for FTTN?

        • +1

          FTTN should auto cancel.

        • no they sms you to confirm closure of the account

          • @Irishness: Do you have an ABB hostname/IP and can you use the app if it's basically ABB rebranded?

            • @slankets: yes to both, I just posted details for accessing the my aussie portal / app on here

  • +1

When you churn NBN providers (FTTP if that's makes a difference), do you have to cancel your current provider? Or does it automatically get cancelled like when you churn a mobile phone number?

    • Most of the time when changing ISPs on FTTP the new ISP gets put onto the nbn NTD next spare UNI-D ethernet port. Cancel your current ISP or else you will get a bill from multiple ISPs even if you are not using it.

    • I’ve only churned two times so far.
iiNet to ABB and ABB to Dodo. Both times it was automatic cancellation.

      • +1

Haha two comments, two different answers! Confusion maintained! Lol.

        • +1

I went through Origin sign up process as Frank Sinatra who was born on 1911. Nothing in the steps asked me about my current provider.

ps: you can't sign up Origin NBN if you were born in 1910. 1911 is fine.

          • @ausdday: Do you have FTTP though?

            • +1

              @Twix: yeah FTTP.

So far I have changed a few NBN providers, and I always call in to cancel. And I usually set them up a few days overlapped in case new ISP messed up. On those overlapped days, I have 2 internet connections on 2 ports and the old one doesn't cancelled itself.

So I was wondering how churning without calling old ISP to cancel would work

              • +1

@ausdday: Calling to cancel is best practice on FTTP.

You need to make a request to the new ISP to take over the UNI-D port your current ISP is using.

        • It is possible for the new ISP to take over the current ISP on the same UNI-D ethernet port and auto cancel. It doesn't happen often though.

          • +1

@Twix: Thanks Twix. That explains it.

  • CAN SOMEONE CLARIFY HOW IT CAN SHOW A MINIMUM CHARGE OF 1 MONTH'S PRICE WHILST SIMULTANEOUSLY SAYING "If you sign up during the Offer Period, you will receive your first two months of internet at no charge." CONFLICTING STATEMENTS.

    • +11

NO YOU BETTER CONTACT ORIGIN THEY ARE THE ONES PROVIDING THE SERVICE AND BILLING FOR IT.

      Thank you.

      • OKAY COOL THANKS

        • +9

WHY IS IT SO LOUD IN HERE? CAN WE GO SOMEHERE MORE QUIET?

    • No need to yell

      • -2

        GLORY TO UKRAINE

        • +1

I prefer Glory to Mankind - from Nier Automata

  • Do we have to give notice before churning away after two months?

  • Note
If your address qualifies for a FTTN, FTTB or FTTC service, and you do not have an active fixed voice service in place that we can connect to, there will be a
$297.00 charge to connect a new or activate an existing copper pair on site. We will debit this charge upfront before your service is activated.

    • +1

$297 only applies if you want to get two nbn connections of FTTN/B/C to one property. This charge is from nbn and all ISPs pass it onto you.

  • +1

all the comments look like a different language. i dont know what everyone is talking about. sounds like the IT saying this is no good. how do you translate why its bad in regular talk.

  • Its hard to understand CG-NAT technology on the internet.

Can somebody explain if I can remote desktop to a server via the remote desktop option on windows? Outbound connection to the server not inbound if the server isn't ip blocked?

    • +3

CGNAT is basically just a firewall at the ISP. It blocks inward connections, but outbound is no problem, just like normal outbound connections.

So you can remote desktop to other servers on the internet. But from the internet you cannnot remote desktop back into your house.

  • +1

with min charge stated in the plan, seems you might not get away with 2 months free, risky

    • +2

my assumption is 3months for the price of 1 month, their wording isn't clear

  • Does anyone know if I can use Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 for this?
I am paying $80/mo for 25/4, time to upgrade when 50 Mbps is even cheaper.

    • +1

Telstra SMG2 can be used with Origin.

    • You can but it'll be locked to the speeds Telstra was providing you.

You'll need to "de-Telstra" the device. Which is basically flashing it with a clean firmware and removing Telstra's customisations. Have a look at whirlpool for details.

      • +1

No you don't need to flash the firmware. Telstra have the same speeds as Origin.

      • +1

What?! Where exactly are you getting this info?

Telstra modified the firmware to lock down certain features/configuration items, not lock down the speed you get.

For example, you won't be able to use it on RSP's that require the use of VLAN ID (TPG umbrella companies), as that option has been removed. Also, you can't use the VOIP settings as they're locked down to Telstra, unless you "unlock" the firmware.

Once configured you'll just have Telstra Branded device with Telstra firmware running on Origin or your RSP of choice.

  • +11

too easy…just end up calling them and signed up with highest speed. Rep said get your 2 months free and call to cancel while u in 2nd month. They even allowed me to select certain date to connect. Rep also asked to ignore the min charge comment, poorly written in their opinion. Lastly, if you calling them to sign up….their system seems to have problem where only existing origin customers seem to be eligible for this offer. Get the Team leader approval to push the order through in that case….

    • +1

      @9monkeyman9 Clarity.

      • +1

        Legends. Thanks!

  • Origin doesn't provide free Modem, to switch, I need to return my current one and purchase one from Origin, which costs more than 2 months fee although this is a very tempting offer. Thanks OP.

    • +2

don't buy one from Origin plenty of cheaper / 2nd hand better options around

      • When you say modem do you mean wifi router? NBN NTD is not the modem? I have a black Arris box NTD with ABB.
I think this refers to wifi router based on the Origin signup page.
