So poor GYB gives 5k of cards and all he gets is negs from Whingers who missed the biscuits .
Maybe the solution for the Whingers is they shouldn't aim at limited biscuits where most will miss out based on numbers .
I don't think its that difficult to understand .

    • -2

To add one term into next deal: excludes ozbargainers (so that no whinging should be here and no need to moderate)

Of course it cant be enforced.

  • +2

    Hi GYB,

The fair thing to do is let everyone who is affected cash out $5 even if they did not meet the min $10 cashback balance for withdrawal.

    • Have no cashback balance other than this $5 and agree. Was just going to get a swap card (when it finally 'confirms' 🙄) to use at coles..but the whole thing was not cool

    • ah yes i forget the minimum .. smart SB!
      SB 1, OZB 0

This is where SB have been very cunning and sly. They get $5 from thousands of people. There are likely to be a large number of people who are under the $10 min withdrawal amount, so SB sits on that money collecting interest, knowing that unless people make new purchases, it could take weeks or months before they get to the $10 limit. So for many casual shoppers, they've just lined SB's coffers with hard cash they can accrue interest on, while the general public have spent $5 on literally nothing that they can't even get back until weeks or months later.

      Disgusting business practice IMO.

      • -2

        Are you kidding ?
How hard is it to get to $10 ?
If it is that difficult I'm sure they don't want your business anyway .

        • +2

It's not hard for some people to get to $10 (at least not for me). But I'm not everyone, and unlike you, I'm not looking at this through a single-person lens. There are casual shoppers out there who are now down $5 for some stupid competition. Plus, this isn't just about the $10 limit. It's the way that SB has reeled people in to score a gift card, knowing that once that allocation was exhausted they'd be sitting on a pool of cash to hold and gain interest on. And that's even IF they had $1000 to give away! There's no way to know if they even had $1000 gift cards.

If it is that difficult I'm sure they don't want your business anyway.

Take your blinders off. If you think they don't want the business of casual shoppers when it's literally lining their pockets with thousands of $, you need to improve your critical thinking abilities and look outside the box you live in.

          • @KangaDrew: can't edit, but I meant to write 1000 gift cards to give away, not $1000

      • +9

@KangaDrew you're overanalysing this and making it seem like we're being intentionally deceptive.
If you took 2 minutes to read my earlier response, you'd understand that this promo was designed with the intent of improving from our previous one.

Obviously, it has not lived up to the communities standard and we've failed here - I won't deny that.
We will learn from this & make changes for future promos.

But to make it out as if we're intentionally deceiving you & holding your $5 for profit is absurd.
We've had less than 2,000 entrants to the competition, which is less than $10,000 in cash.
That money will be returned within a week - it will not make our accounts look any better/worse at the end of the year because it's in & out.
Additionally, to suggest that we're holding less than $10,000 to reinvest/make a profit, or as you stated "accrue interest on" is outright ridiculous.

If you can show me where I can make big bank from a stable $10,000 investment in under a week I'd be all in.

        • I'd go further and say that most people who entered the completion are ahead. They would probably have used a credit card and earned 0.5-1% in points for 1 week's outlay, which costs them nothing because it's interest free. Those that used cashback are neutral unless they were planning on withdrawing that money.

SB would net probably have lost money, excluding the $314, due to the credit card charges, which far exceed any interest they can earn in a week.

        • -1

Over analysing is a bad thing is it? For SB, I guess it is bad. Are we all meant to just sit back and accept SB's word without questioning they way this was handled and the lack of transparency?

Considering the amount of time SB had to "improve" on the last one in November (was 4 months not enough time to make it right?) everyone's expectations of a much more transparent promo are entirely valid. And given the lack of transparency around the $5 not being refunded back, forgive me for not believing that SB had less 2000 entrants. And I'm sure I'm not the only one that calls BS on the claim that SB had less than 2000 entrants.

Funnily enough, I did read your earlier comment. And if the plan is to actually refund everyone's money back, then all well and good. Except, that's NOT the plan, is it?

you will receive your $5 back as Cashback within a week

How is money being "returned" exactly? Because cashback is NOT a refund. So for all those that have under $10, how do THEY get their money back?

Obviously, it has not lived up to the communities standard and we've failed here - I won't deny that. We will learn from this & make changes for future promos.

How many times are SB going to use this same lame excuse, ripped straight from a politicians playbook? It's a fluff comment. Smoke in the wind. It's words used to try and appease people while meaning nothing at all. But again, how is this generic one-liner any different from the responses given for past promos that were royal screw ups?

And why is it absurd to think SB are not holding on to the cash for any other reason other than profit? SB is a company for profit. There's no reason whatsoever to hold on to the cash other than to make a profit from it. This hustle was a competition (first and foremost) masquerading as a bonus cashback offer (secondary) with the entry to the competition being $5, which was subsequently banked as a cashback that people won't get back until they hit the $10 threshold. SB can slice it up however they want - but this is exactly what it is.

If you can point me to exactly where it says in the T&C's that this was explicitly laid out, I'll be waiting. But it's obvious based on all the comments in this thread that a complete lack of transparency is the issue here.

          • +4

@KangaDrew: No need to wait for the account to accrue $10+ you can just buy a $5 gift card instead.

            • +2

@dins: Exactly! The amount of time that you spent writing that long comment up, you could’ve find a gift card to use that $5

              It’s a win-win situation tbh

              • @BargainsGrabber: I will get a coles gc for the $5, but it aint win-win. I dont get points for my credit card use. Sure, I will easily use $5 at coles but I dont 'win' anything here. It would at most be neutral for me, minus the 'waiting for a week for cashback to be confirmed' thing.

                • +1

@Rain Cloud: Sorry meant to say win-win in the sense that your $5 is technically not “lost” as some of you have been saying in previous comments

                  • @BargainsGrabber: Its okay. I never personally said I'd 'lost' money myself, and I will be less grumpy once the cashback confirms and I can use it to get a gc and spend it (and forget about the whole fiasco). Im personally not a big online spender and have accured less than $90 in cashback over a year and I am likely to forget I have a cashback balance if I waited until i got $10 so i will just get a gift card. Luckily coles is included, because $5 at coles is easy peasy spending that I will do anyway.

              • @BargainsGrabber: Pro tip: Do not use it till the next bonus deal. Maybe people used the $5 balance here to fast track the bonus, saving the step to charge from card.

                • @Neoika: You get prompted for a SMS code if you opt for 100% offset.
Sometimes this 2FA token delivery is delayed.

    Scam

  • +7

    Hey all,

Could we please refrain on the temptation and pour hatred to insult people around here? GYB has done good favours for the OzB community in the past and as we all know we’re still a human.

I’m sure if he’s reading all of the comments here he’ll definitely take the feedbacks into consideration for future promo and he’s just doing a job

    • +4

Amen to that y'all need to stop behaving like a bunch of irrational Pi-rates!

  • +6

Perhaps if this was carried out in a "calmer" draw/competition style, there wouldn't have been this much dissatisfaction. Say if the competition starts at 3.14 and runs for a couple of hours, during which people who opt in and pay $5 are entered into the draw. When the competition ends, 1000 people who win will get double their investment in the form of cashback and gift card, others will just get the cashback. Then the system wouldn't be too overloaded with processing payment requests.

    • -2

They could've literally done ANYTHING else and it would've been a vast improvement. Every time they run these types of promos, it's a mess and they always say the same thing: "We'll take on your feedback and learn and change…" blah blah blah. But it never happens.

      • You seem like the type that has a profound knowledge in business by providing so much of sound advice

Is there a successful example that you’ve managed to run that has been well received by others?

It’s best not to talk big, if you don’t have any concrete advice to give out

        Just saying

  • +11

Hey GYB, I just want to throw this out there:

Thanks to you and the SB team for the deals you run, the exclusive OB promos you organise and even these "first x people" promos. I wasn't lucky/quick enough, but have been before. At the very least I've certainly come out ahead by you being part of the OB community.

Don't take the vitriol to heart - we all get over-amped when we take it personally. The worst result for all of us would be for you to back off the promos because of a few sour grapes.

    Cheers,
    MattyD

    • I second that .

    • +1 agreed! We need more of this motivational sentences after what was turned out not to be a successful promo from a few sour grapes around here

  • -1

Hi GYB, I was one of the lucky ones and managed to get one of the $5 GC but I did not receive the 100% cashback as my credit card was still charged $5. So does this mean the cashback comes in later?

    • Check your cashback? Got an extra $5?

    • can you access you $5 giftcard? I am getting redirected to the promo page and not my $5 voucher when I click on it under Purchases section

  • Prize draw today at 10am …………….
