  • they dont list the prices properly so its no deal

Isn't the price the wholesale rate which fluctuates constantly?

      • Correct that's how I'm reading it as well… The solar feed-in rates seem rather poor so no deal for me unfortunately :-(

I’m with them. Unless you don’t like using your aircon when it’s hot. They’re ok.

OP, Compared your rates with Reamped. They are significantly cheaper.

Two power spikes in the past two days. Even posting peak power prices ~40c all night.
Such a chore to check what the prices are every other hour
And sometimes solar feed in is negative, so you’re losing money by generating electricity!
I am shopping around to see a better value flat rate power company.

    • It’s been a pretty rare run of days, having been on wholesale rates for 2 years, haven’t seen anything like this. Surely the normal fixed price retailers will be passing on these extra costs soon enough, so wouldn’t leaving effectively be consolidating your losses? (Ie going to them and then soon after having the rates jacked up?)

Having a look at Reamped, and then the average wholesale price, I can’t see how it’s possible for them to keep offering her current prices - unless they plan on being a loss leader, which requires a LOT of cash.

  • Been with Amber for 2+ years now, average price paid for the entirety of my time with them is 19.08c/kWh. Last 5 monthly bills have been $70, $61, $45 (referral credit of $15 included), $64, $82.
Not living in the stone ages, just doing simple things like setting washing machines etc to run during cheapest part of the day, and pre heating/cooling our house with central ducted.

    • My last one was $140. I don’t sleep there but run a load of washing and dryer daily.

    • Do you have solar, or gas appliances? I'm with Amber with no solar and fully electric appliances, rarely use the air conditioner… yet my bills still average about $150/mo, even with me scheduling appliances outside peak times.

I don't see how you could run central air regularly as you imply and still clock in under $100 a month unless one of the first two points was true.

Only gas hot water, no solar or batteries.
2 adults loving together in a 3 bed room 90yo house (that's had new insulation added etc).

For the aircon I use node red (via home assistant on a raspberry pi), which does all the calculations on best times to run during the day, a kill swtich/phone notification when a genuine spike occurs as to whether I want to continue, and even a program that auto turns on practically everything on max when the price goes negative.

  • They are expensive than what I am currently paying. Lol. Just beware

    • They're really not great

    Repost from an earlier deal:

I used Amber for a few months around when covid hit and everyone started working from home. I had 2 issues with them:

    1) You'd get these craaaazy price spikes at times. From memory it was up to $15/kWh. Amber would send a notification and I'd have to turn everything off ASAP. Of course it was usually at times when everyone else was using AC for a reason…

    2) There were times when I'd have to pay them to feed solar into the grid.

From memory it may have worked out maaaarginally cheaper but overall I found it wasn't worth the hassle of the extra monitoring required.

    I'm not convinced with Amber Energy's pricing…

Using their average general usage charges and average solar feed in tariffs.

My bill is worse off by 65cents a day (which is about $16.80 more for 30 day bill cycle, $50.40 more for 90 day bill cycle).

Definitely shop around for energy retailers to find a deal that best suits your needs.

  • I just switched from Amber to Reamped, saves ~70/month.

  • Wow, so bad! My kWh rate I pay now is much lower then Ambers avg for my postcode. Amber’s supply charge is a couple cents cheaper then mine, but then I saw $15 a month for subscription fee, that’s a joke, now I have to pay to get a energy bill which is not cheaper then my current rates lol major pass

    • May I ask for two things from your most recent bill (if you can be bothered): your total price paid from your CC or bank to them, and your total kWh usage for that same month/time period?

I'm always curious to see what someone actually pays compared to the advertised rates

  • I compare my rate in Albury with their website. I am already paying less for my utilities. Useless website to be honest better compare it on government website.

Don’t use unless you like cooking your dinner at odd times if you have electric appliances.

Having to check prices before you use electricity gets old quickly - esp when you’re not saving money. This is no way to live guys.

This is based on personal experience

    • So from all these posts, it seems that you don't save unless you use electricity off peak and there's potential to get hit hard if you use during a peak period (either due demand or lack of supply). Seems terrible. For this to be any good, the average power bill would need to be cheaper without adjusting your usage patterns to account for the risk that you might have to pay more during a freak b expensive period. Then there's the hassle too
