    Good deal TA :)

Doh, just placed an order at work for two Lenovo laptops less than 24 hours ago costing more and 6 cores

I did find out that with Lenovo they usually put in a single stick of memory so for Ryzen processors this causes a notable drop in performance compared to Intel with 1 stick due to memory bandwidth issues.

    Regards

    • yes need 2 sticks in ryzen based machines

    • Oh is this a two or one stick ? Just checked ,it says two .!

    • +1

Clicking on the link, it reveals that this system a duel channel 8+8 config
I think it's hard to note ram performance differences for an office laptop that its top 3 most used apps are WORD, OUTLOOK and TEAM, 30GB/S single channel ram bandwidth should do it just fine

      • Curious if it could support 32GB ram in one channel

        • +1

yes, this is on the spec sheet
          Max Memory[1]
          Up to 40GB (8GB soldered + 32GB SO-DIMM) DDR4-3200

    • cancel it quick!

    E14 gen4 is fantastic

  • Any deals on the ThinkPad T15p Gen 3 Intel? - https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-t-ser…

  • “Weighing from just 1.59kg and less than 25.4mm thick, the ThinkPad E14 Gen 4 14" AMD is very portable. ”

    25+mm thick!

    • That has to be a typo? Here's the dimensions on their specs page. Have pinged my Lenovo contact, but don't think I'll get a response today.

  • I see TA, I upvote

  • Basic user here (browsing, and Word.) Should I spend the extra cash over this deal?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/705261

    • I would say so - even browsing can become intensive on a system if you have a lot of tabs open.
The extra ram here should see you satisfied with this laptop for more years than you would with the other

      • 8c/16t is overkill for their needs. The other system will be fine, just add another ram module

    • +3

Nah, just upgrade RAM on that one for a better experience, but as is it should handle browsing and Word no problem.

    • +1

Nah, like Reloxation said: really not worth the extra money if that is your user case. If you ever need more RAM, it will only cost you 60 bucks or so, depending on the market.

      • My 9 y/o daughter is starting basic coding. I am not a whiz with computers. Should I get her this or save bucks and get the ThinkPad E15 Gen 3? Or get her something else?

        • +1

I think I bigger screen is better if you don't need to take the laptop around much. Please not much difference between gen 3 and gen 4, mainly the CPU and camera. Plus you get a keypad on the E15 keyboard.

        • +1

Dude if she's doing that now I'd get her to manage your share portfolio at 12

        • +1

I wouldn't worry too much about the difference in power for programming. With a couple of exceptions (e.g. ML) you don't need a powerful machine to learn to code. I've gotten through most of a CS degree with a dual core notebook from 2016.

    • I would get the E15 if you don't mind the bigger size and weight. Bigger screens are better for productivity anyway.
You can always install your own 8GB RAM later.

  • Such good machine and a good price too with all the Cashback and a store credit - quite tempted

  • Any idea what'll be the invoice date..?

    • +2

Unless I'm mistaken, Lenovo invoices are always dated per their shipping date. So it will be a date next week. Hope this helps :)

      • Awesome and thank you :-)

  • Deciding between yoga 6 touchscreen and this. Comments welcomed thanks

  • +2

Only one USB-C port that's also the charger port and display port. Looks like will need a dongle. Yes there is HDMI but its only 1.4b so if you have a 4K screen then only 30Hz.

    • -3

I'm not sure how accurate their HDMI 1.4b claims are considering 5825u SOC iGPU can drive 4k at 60hz. From experience I had a Lenovo Flex where the specs stated 1.4b but the SOC supported a higher refresh rate. I had no issues running at 4k 60hz via HDMI by just changing it in Windows.

      • +1

What model is your laptop. Even if SOC or GPU supports it they can still only have 1.4b bandwidth to the port so there is no guarantee what you saying will work. My intel 11th gen laptop can only do 4k 30hz on HDMI and need usb-c/thunderbolt for higher.

    • you can get cheap hubs from aliexpress for $25 that do 4k 60Hz hdmi, power delivery and one usb2 port which you can then chain to another 7$ usb2 hub for your mouse, keyboard, webcam, mic

  • +1

What else can you buy with store credit?

    • Get a Dock. Trust me, you need one.

  • +1

I notice it is 8GB soldered RAM and 8GB 3200 SODIMM. Which means, if you want to expand the RAM, you have to take the 8GB SODIMM out first.

  • I'm using Gen 3 version of this laptop and it's great so far

    • Fans noisy?

      • +1

        Nah it's not noisy

      • I've got the Gen 2 (functionally basically identical to this) and it's basically silent except if I'm doing something particularly intensive.

  • Which is better this one or this when it comes back out for $1199 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/704262#comment-12230469

    • think pad

      • Thanks- jumped on it

    • I'm pretty sure would just from the title this has a better CPU and a better screen

Plus 14% cashback is quite significant, and apparently this store credit you received is decent as well

  • bought the e14 gen 4 ryzen 5 model when it released during easter
awesome machines, this price is a steal!

  • 1,046.40 after cash back + $128 Lenovo rewards dollars. not bad

    • Does anyone remember the similar do from Officeworks in December with the 15 inch screen?

The specs look very similar I think

  • Should I wait for a sale on the 6000 series?

    • +1

Depends how many iceberg lettuce you eat.

  • -1

looks like no usb c port?

  • I have the gen 3, my 12 to daughter has dropped the hell out of this and still working great, strong casing. 5 days ago a hair brush hit the screen at speed and smashed it good. Lenovo wanted 500-550 to fix, a local replaced the screen for 210. If this is for a child buy the accidental damage insurance

    • +1

That is why I never rage dance or rage until I've turned all the mirrors and screens around

Normally after that I'm too tired

  • Is this a touchscreen?

    • +1

      Nope

  • Is the body and top made of plastic or aluminium? Dropped and cracked my old e485 and wanting to replace it with something more sturdy.

  • Is the laptop charger included? When checking out , have to pay 59 for charger ?

    • +2

Charger included with all Lenovo laptops I have bought even if it did have the option of purchasing one.

      • Thanks!

  • Tried contacting support but couldn't get an answer whether this model came with a Gigabit Ethernet port as it says optional but unable to add it in the customization section. Looks like the Intel model does come with it.

Added all the 3Y Service inclusions and came to $1405, it's a banger of a deal OP! Now just fingers crossed that the Cashrewards for $196 pulls though!

    • +1

I'm quite certain you'll be fine. Do let us know how you go with cashback :)

    • Honest question with the ACCC cracking down on warranties eg Fitbit

Even out of warranty they have to fix it if it's within a 'reasonable' time

What made you get the 3 years cover?

      • +1

Fair enough but didn't want to wait for repairs as I'll be using it for work. Also since the laptop on the tax return can only be claimed as a depreciating asset over three years, now the service matches that time too

    • It definitely comes with a Gigabit Ethernet port. We have several of these at my workplace so can confirm.

      • Awesome, thanks for letting me know! Figured if it doesn't will just get one of the docks but they're basically a quarter the cost of this laptop!

  • thanks OP, any chance for the E15 ?

  • My new work laptop, just used for work but i'm happy with it. Battery is pretty good.

    • I was thinking about yoga carbon but I guess it has barely any ports

  • Looks like good deal, before buying just want to check if it has got any heating, noise issues. Thank you in advance for the inputs.

    • We have about 10 of these in our work fleet + dozens of Gen 2's. Never had anyone report any heating issues or concerns about fan noise so you'll be fine.

      • Hey do you know if your fleet laptops are made of plastic or aluminium? Keen on this if it's got aluminium construction.

        • Aluminium for these.

        • Definitely an aluminium cover.

  • What's the difference between gen 2 and gen 4 and is it worth the extra 200

    • Gen 4 has newer updated components, e.g. CPU, RAM, SSD, better screen too.

Is it worth $200 more? That's a decision you would need to make dependant on your personal circumstances too.

  • Been wondering how these laptops with integrated graphics peform when running games in them. What sort of games could these and similar laptops handle?

    • YouTube is a good guide for gaming performance on this, if you search for '5700u gaming' (same iGPU as this) you'll get a good indicator of what's playable.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwGRvWOTEKo

Basically, esports titles easily at 1080p, older AAA games at some lower resolutions. Some newer AAA titles may run on low at 720p (eg Elden Ring seems to run at around ~40 fps judging by a YouTube video).

    • Nice arse, what laptop do you use when travelling?

  • The code still works (not expired) but that coupon code is not on the cashrewards site anymore. Is there still 14% upsized cashback @tightarse? (Or 10%?)

    Thanks.

  • Should the rewards dollars post to my account immediately upon purchase or later on (eg after shipped)? Current rewards balance of $0

    • You sign up for Lenovo rewards at checkout, then you’re credited them upon shipping.

      • Thanks

      • The product is delivered, but still, it shows pending…

        • Hi. What shows pending?

          • @tightarse: Under Lenovo My Account —> My Rewards —> Purchase history

            6/13/2022 Receipt Number: 4602788XXX ++0 Points Pending: 12754 Points

            • @GDayStraya: Ah, ok. Thought you were referring to CR. Please chase this with Lenovo via chat :)

  • FYI - contacted Lenovo today about what the 3 year actually includes. The 3 year add-on is NOT an extended warranty. It's simply 3 years of premium support. So if something fails (e.g. keyboard, hard drive etc), they will provide a technician but you will have to pay for the parts.

They also don't offer accidental damage protection anymore. This was phased out more than a year ago.

And while I'm here, this particular model has a colour gamut of 45% NTSC (as opposed to 100% sRGB, which was quoted on the main page). It's a bit sneaky how they market it where they use the phrase "This is all thanks to an up to 14" FHD antiglare display with 100% colour accuracy".

  • 14" Intel version now available for those subscribed to this thread :)
