Better than the last deal. Thank you, OP.

  • Interestingly enough, the TGGC price is still $189.

  • +3

Wow great price! But do check date of stock. They might be clearing out old stock that has been shelved for a few years. I ended up with alarms that were 2 years old last sale.

    • Do you think you have a case to reject them based on manufacture date, seeing as these supposedly have a hard stop date encoded?

      • Wouldn't the date be on the box?

      • +2

I could have returned it but was in hard lockdown at the time and rather not get Delta strain.

        • +3

          rather not get Delta strain

That and omicron has been ozbargained.

          • @kaleidoscope: Waiting for monkeypox to transition into ozbargained status.

            • @DoctorCalculon: Isnt that spread through very close or intimate contact

            • +3

@DoctorCalculon: Apparently we can't call it monkey pox now as it is offensive to monkeys. Chickens and cows have applied for the name changes too but getting no love.

              • +8

@CJ31: My 5 foot partner has lodged an appeal against smallpox too

                • @buckster: No more injection "man"date…because women are excluded ..from now on it shall be "woman"date…

              • @CJ31: It is offensive, clearly all of these are human pox!

              • +1

@CJ31: I hear it's because of racist connotations which seems silly. I wasn't associating it with black people up until they tried to make the connection of monkey/black people to change the name. Seems like it's the lawmakers having racist stereotypes hardwired in to their bones and projecting that on to the population as a whole, or trying to appeal to what's hip and trendy

                • @SpainKing: I'm not sure where you gleaned that from, afaik the decision with monkeypox was simply just like the other virus where they were not naming strains/clades after the geographical locations that had the misfortune of discovering them for the first time. We know from the fact it doesn't benefit anyone - stigmatises the region, the people born in that region that have moved overseas, and it doesn't exactly motivate a city to report ASAP if the whole world is going to name it "xyz city virus".

                  • @merinosweater: Strangely no problem with human immune deficiency (HIV) and simian immune deficiency (SIV) viruses.

    • If you select C&C, and when you pick up you can examine the boxes, and then tell them to cancel the sale if the production dates are unsatisfactory.

    • Can I know what the issue is to have a old stock of smoke alarm ?

      • +3

They have a shelf life of 7 or 10 years, depending on which generation it belongs to.

  • Same price at Amazon.

    • +5

I could only find the wired one at amazon

  • +13

$10 less on ebay good guys. $119 for me at least.

    • +2

And free delivery for plus members

    • Is there a code? Showing $129 for me

      • +6

Yes the code is MCPAY10 and it's something to do with the payment with a debit or Mastercard.

        • Thanks!

        • I paid with gift cards and the code worked for me, if anyone interested.

      • +1

        MCPAY10

        Try this one

  • +1

Worth noting again that the battery model at least is not compliant with QLD legislation for anyone considering purchasing in QLD.

    • +2

In QLD, both Hard wired and Wireless are compliant by law. As long as they are inter- connectable ( 1 alarm goes off they all go off )

      • +7

Only for units with non removable 10yr lifetime batteries.

      • +6

Not the Google version. The battery model of Nest isn’t compliant with QLD legislation unfortunately (battery needs to be non removable).

      • +1

There are compliant battery smoke detectors (provided your property isn’t new and has never had hardwired detectors fitted). But this particular model isn’t compliant because there’s a firm requirement that the battery operated models contain a 10 year non removable battery, and this model runs off removable AA batteries.

    • Thanks, came here looking for this.

    • Which is such a shame as it’s such a good smoke alarm with excellent features! Hearing the self check is great, along with the reports on phone/email and the night light is a really handy feature… we’ve had no false alarms since we installed them…. And they look great!

I read somewhere the wired one isn’t either … something about the protection around the power connector or something? I believe it can be made compliant on install though… can’t remember where I read it.

  • Also spend $300+ on The Good Guys website and click and collect to get $40 credit.

    • Based on the review from good guys, some customers has difficulties to return due to the shorten lifespan of alarm. End up bought two from Amazon instead of The good guys , at least easier to return without asking. IMO.

  • +2

Anyone know where we can get replacement batteries that won’t kill the bank for these?

    • In my experience, only energizer ultimate works; everything else will be rejected by the unit/app saying 'low battery'

  • Thanks OP! Bought two from Amazon!

    • Same here

  • Balls just remembered I bought a 3rd one (wired) that I forgot to hook up.

    • +9

      Balls just remembered

Unusual place for a memory recall 🤠

      • Well played 🫣

        • 🥜=💡

  • +1

Aren't you guys paying for something that you can get for free? Not Google's smoke alarm but a free smoke alarm including installation provided by the government…

    • +1

Is this scheme available in all states? Or, just NSW and QLD?

    • +3

I don’t know what type of smoke alarm they use but I installed this because:
      1. It detects carbon monoxide;
      2. It emits a bit of light at night when there’s motion - perfect for those midnight bathroom trips;
      3. It looks a bit nicer than most traditional smoke detector in my view;
      4. I was a bit obsessed with smart home stuff.

      • can we just leave it on an open cupboard that's quite high ? i'm not confident to drill something up in the ceiling

        • +1

You don't need to drill. Comes with screws that can be safely screwed into plaster ceilings with a normal screwdriver. Self tapping.

          • @10101010101: you can also use double-sided sticky tape to hold it

I read the laws and saw no requirement for screws - just stuff like 'fitted'

you could probably even use blutack if you used enough to never fall off a ceiling from gravity over time

dunno this one but most come with a bayonet mount base you can stick, and then simply turn-release the main body for checking or battery replacement

I think I looked at this model, saw it needs internet, and went no thanks - I don't want my life dependent on an internet connection.

      • +5

Also the "there is smoke in the kitchen, the alarm will sound soon, it will be loud" warnings you get a great for those of us who occasionally over smoke the oil in the kitchen :). Beats a ear-piercing noise for a false alarm.

My Biggest issue is they STILL dont link up with google home. So i cant just tell google to stop the alarms.

        • yes - I think you had to be within 2m or something to interact with the smoke alarm - so any idea of turning off a false alarm (common from dust in photoelectric sensors) from elsewhere probably ain't gonna work with this one.

        • So it doesn't connect to the home ecosystem?

    • Source links?

    • The extra features like being able to silence it from the phone after setting it off from cooking could be pretty useful in some situations, though I haven't had that problem in a long time.

    • I don't know, but I'm very interested. Care to elaborate?

  • Would this be suitable for the sort of temps you see in a garage?

  • Who waits on a price drop for a smoke alarm? Seems kind of important to have asap lol. Not picking on OP but it seems so odd haha.

    • +6

I've been waiting. Our alarms work, but assuming they were installed when the place was built around 2012 (we moved in about 1.5 years ago) they are coming up to 10 years. I did some research and I liked this one so I've been waiting for a price drop.

      Thanks OP.

    • those that are looking to upgrade to a smart alarm, or building a new house

    • I have been waiting since last deal that was posted 11 months ago. Already have old ones, but I was waiting to upgrade to these.

    • We have the old style buzzer ones currently..

    • +1

Picked up a couple a couple days ago. Then saw this deal.

Luckily they refunded me the difference when I called up.

  • Re Stock Date — what’s a reasonable stock date to expect here? I imagine up to one year old is what I should aim for?

  • For the wired model “What's In The Box” under "Technical Specifications" section on TGG website lists 1x120V AC Connector, does that mean these are not 230V ?

    • Does Australia have 120V power?

      No it doesn't.

They will come with a 230v power supply because if they came with a 110v one it would go pop as soon as you turned it on.

    • They will run off 240v however the power cable is technically not compliant because its only single insulated and not double.

  • +5

I recently installed 3 wired ones sparky was a little dubious when installing them due to the wiring used but ended up doing it. Was interesting when he tested them with smoke spray they give a verbal warning saying what location the smoke is in before they go off and much easier to silence than the old ones running around trying to figure out which one set them off while getting your ear drums blasted.

Wired and battery also interconnect with each other so when I add more I can just buy the battery ones. Also the wired ones just unplug when need replacing so need need to get sparky back to replace them.

Night light is also great and can turn it off in the app.

I bought mine on eBay deal and were only 6 months old which I didn’t think was too bad.

    • Don't the wired ones just plug in a powerpoint with a normal plug? Asking because I've got a powerpoint in the garage to plug it in.

      • +2

The wired ones are bare wires that require (legally) an electrician to wire in. Seems like a good idea to prevent them being accidentally turned off.

      • No, they need to be wired in by an electrician.

    • I wanted to find out if the sparky installed the wired Nest protect with a junction box or without one. Would you know if that a legal requirement or nice to have?

      • +1

        Legal and safety requirements

  • -3

    I'll buy at $99

    • Why would anyone neg this…goal achieved and went to Bunnings and price match DJ….that's the Ozbargain spirit

  • i wanted to buy 3 for pickup but my local store only has 1

    • I tried to buy 3 for delivery ended up with an error after i submitted the order. I tried to log into my account password was out of date and it will not accept my new password.
So at the moment i have no smoke alarms and no money

  • Does anyone know the rules regarding strata apartments (NSW) and if you're allowed to change smoke alarms to these? A fire safety company is sent out yearly to check the wired smoke alarm works. I don't know if we are permitted to change them over

    • +1

So you want to remove the strata smoke alarm (that is owned by the strata) and replace it with your own which is not interconnected with the rest of the complex?

Are you then going to supply enough Google smoke alarms to the strata so they can replace them in every apartment so that they are compliant with the laws requiring interconnected smoke alarms?

      • Our apartment complex is 40+ years old and the smoke alarms are not interconnected. I hear my neighbour's alarms go off all the time and mine is silent

    • +1

      depends who paid -

if strata paid then they should check and replace as necessary with each yearly inspection - especially if it is wired to a common property panel to identify and/or interlink alarms to go off all together or somesuch

if not wired to a common property panel, and up to the individual owner, then the individual owner should do and pay for that to pass the annual fire safety inspection (where they check the date less than 10yo; then spray the smoke alarm and wait for it to beep) - NSW requires photoelectric sensor type, and while some fire companies like to claim 10-year non-removable battery is required, I believe NSW legislation allows 9V removable battery.

fire companies like to charge $150-200 each to install smoke alarms, so they like to pressure strata to do that, whereas we got DIY smoke alarms for more like $35 - https://www.google.com/shopping/product/5932573725602688955 (note the review/comment about false alarms - a problem with NSW required photoelectric type from dust)

      • while some fire companies like to claim 10-year non-removable battery is required

Might not be required in NSW but is in QLD, they’re probably just getting wires crossed.

Fire companies do like to pressure strata, before I took over my strata they were getting us to do all sorts of things totally unnecessary for a building < 25m high. Strata managers always go along with over servicing because it’s not their money, they get a work order fee and they’re never going to get in trouble for being overly safe.

I’ve had the QLD required photoelectric alarms for about 5 years now and have possibly had one maybe false alarm trigger in that time.

  • Same price at Amazon

    • Only wired on Amazon and $1 cheaper

  • I grabbed it from local Bunnings with price match, but stock is thin

    • bought last 2 wired ones from bunnings pymble. they have 2 battery ones still. mfg date nov 2021.

  • Great - Bunnings price beat =$116.10 or cheaper if you beat HN price of $128.

    • If you can find stock at your local Bunnings.
The online stock indicator can be completely wrong. Maybe, someone with a tradepass can get better results.

    • +2

Bought $114.30 from local Bunnings price beat officeworks $127

  • With the requirement to be interconnected, can I replace 2 of my current smoke alarms with these, and it will still interconnect with the other normal hard wired ones?

  • Extra $20 off with student email, if you are buying $200+. Combine it with $40 Store credit if you are buying $300+ with store pick up.

  • i have 2 of these … they are really sensitive…. make sure you have a good rangehood otherwise you'll be turning it off everytime you cook a steak.

the smart features are worthwhile and the nightlight is great, makes it worth the extra over a regular smoke alarm.

    • Cook steak on a Weber problem solved :)

    • do these need to replaced every year like normal smoke detectors?
      and if no, why not?
