Sony E-Mount 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS Lens SEL55210 $168 + Shipping (Limited $0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Harvey Norman

300

Harvey Norman has reduced the Sony 55-210mm E-Mount (APS-C) lens to $168.

Normal price is $299, although last week Harvey Norman was selling this for $199. Currently $254.15 on Sony's site.

Unclear if this is a clearance or not, a few stores that I've checked in WA are showing stock. Some other lenses also reduced.

You should be able to price match at JB Hi-Fi and others, I was able to get JB Hi-Fi to bring it down to $199 last week.

Reviews generally acknowledge this is not the sharpest lens, but represents good value.

  • Good price for additional lense to your camera unit. I have got this one few years back. Takes quality, sharp pictures.

  • Agree. I sold this and an a6000 body.
This lens is easily worth this.

    • I've got an A6000 with this lens lying around gathering dust if anyone want to PM me about it.

      • I just want the lens, Donno how to pm here.

      • yeah ill have it

  • any feedback with a7iii? I don't mind to bring this one instead of my GM 24gm and 85gm when I am with my little one. Been having hard time taking photos and chasing.

    Thank you.

This is an APS-C lens, which means you will have to enable APS-C/Super 35 mode on your camera, which means the camera will use less of the sensor, hence lower resolution images and a zoom factor of 1.5x compared to full frame.

I wouldn't advise it if you want to get the best shots, but ymmv. Maybe take a look at the Sony 24-240 for full frame. That's a decent full frame alternative to this, albeit much more expensive. Not a bad lens overall, focus was a bit iffy for my preference.

      • Thought so. Thank you for your feed back.

    • What's difficult? Getting a non-blurry, in focus shot? If so, the 24mm and 85mm would be way better than this at that. Also depends if you're shooting indoors or outdoors.

      • Just want to bring something light for run and gun moments with my 2 years old.

    • So you've only got prime lenses?

You should check out some of the Tamron zoom lenses. They're more expensive than this though but will get better results. This lens will work but photos will be cropped.

Check out the Sony G 24-105mm

      • +1 its not too pricey and great quality for the price, probably lighter than the 85gm too

May need to add the aperture also (F/4.5 - 6.3) in the title. That's the first information I need to know before buying any lens.

Have done so now. I figured most who were interested in this lens would be at least somewhat familiar with it, including its limitations, but making it clearer can't hurt.

  • Need some help! I'm running an online store and need a budget camera mainly for indoor photoshoots; you can tell that I don't have the ideal setup but I bought this one recently: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08LNCR3LG/ref=ppx_yo_d…

    Thanks in advance.

    • What do you actually need help with? Or is this just spam to direct people to your selling profile on Amazon?

    • Specify budget…

      • No more than $500?

  • Price match with sony.com.au and wait for 10% cash back

  • How is this for video and getting a blur effect? I use a sony zv-e10

    • You're probably not looking for a telephoto lens for video?

Blur effect = motion blur? That's a function of your camera settings, for video I ensure my shutter speed is set to 1/50s for shooting at 25fps (essentially a 180degree shutter), and adjust aperture or other settings to ensure that shutter speed works.

        They might mean bokeh.

The longer the focal length, the more shallow DOF ('blurred background') you'll get. But generally speaking, you'll control this through your aperture. This lenses lowest aperture is f4.5 on the lowest focal point (55mm) so it's not great, but if you punch in to say 130mm+ (this will bring you to f6.3 which is even worse for a nice shallow DOF) but you'll find you'll have some general shallow DOF just based on the 'zoom distance' factor. The more you zoom in the more you'll get. But ultimately on this lens you're capped at f4.5 on an APSC camera sensor which isn't going to have as much shallow DOF as a FF sensor.

In terms of being good for video or not, generally speaking, most 'film' content, you're sitting in the range of 18mm-85mm (unless you're doing more creative type shots). This lens would be much more geared towards photography. Also having a variable aperture is not great for video as when you zoom in and the lens moves from f4.5 to f6.3, you'll notice the image getting darker.

  • Sony really gave up their A mount.

  • I'm considering getting this vs the 28-70mm which is also on sale, anyone who has both care to give an opinion between the 2?

    • I think the 28-70mm has been designed for full frame, not APSC. I think that you can still use it, but I already have a 16-55mm kit lens for my a6000 hence I will not purchase the 28-70mm but the 55-210mm lens. The 55-210mm is a basic telephoto lens, so you can zoom in on things - useful for wildlife, distant landscapes and for basic Bokeh effects. This is my very limited understand, and I'd appreciate someone more knowledgeable to correct me if I am totally wrong.

      • Thanks. I also have the a6000 with the 16-55mm kit lens. I've gone through some YouTube vids between the 2 and yeah it seems like the 28-70mm is designed for full frame. So I'm thinking of getting this deal.

        • I have the a6000 and this 55-210mm lens. I also have the 28-70 and have tried it on the a6000. Get the 55-210.

I really need to sell some gear.

    • depends on what you're trying to achieve, and what other lenses you already have? There's a few really good videos on these lenses as they are super common. They can give you a really good idea of what images are possible on either. This one takes a decent photo zoomed, but both are outdoor, lots of light needed lenses, so if you plan on taking photos indoors, at parties or etc. I would look elsewhere.

  • Is this lens compatible with a Canon 80D?

    • Nope. You'll need a canon to sony lens adapter. Some apdaters reduce the quality of the image too.

  • I got this lens ages back with my NEX 6 - really sharp for its price. See some review online and you will be surprised. If you on are on the fence get it.

Very good value lens, but don't have unrealistic expectations for the images that come out of it. The high variable aperture can be a real issue for low light and fast movement, and the bokeh is pretty ugly imo. It has OSS which does help, but if at all possible in this price range I'd get one of the incredible value Sigma prime lenses and try zooming with your feet :)

  • I would agree with the fact that at this price, new, this lens is a bargain. Personally I think the lens is getting a little long in the tooth. Compared to my newer Sony and Sigma lenses, it's not as sharp.

In saying that, it's my only telephoto lens, so I'll find out how good/bad the lens is when I buy a newer telephoto for my A6500.

  • Good deal!

I don't think there's any local pickup (at least in Syd)

Still a bargain with + shipping

    • I selected pickup from the West Ryde store
