25% off

25% off the Ooni Karu (wood-pellet or charcoal fuelled) and Ooni Fyra (wood-pellet fuelled) ovens is good buying. I paid more than both of these for the Koda 12 which is gas only. The Karu looks like my pick as it can be upgraded to gas and then you can use any of the three fuels.

You can also do BBQing, meat and fish in these, although I haven't tried that yet. Head on over to /r/ooni to check out Ooni creations.

You'll also need a peel (preferably 2, 1 x wood for launching, 1 x steel for turning/retrieving), and a contactless thermometer is handy too.

  • Just like the deal on Prime Day, the Karu is not able to be delivered to my address in metro Melbourne. Keen to see if anybody has success in placing an order.

    • Same issue for me in metro Brisbane. Disappointing…

    • Ohh, I see what you mean. That's bizarre. I wonder where it can be delivered to??

    • Same issue for me in Newcastle

      edit

Can choose the Ooni frya but not the Karu Wood and charcoal.

I've just been on live chat with Patricia on Amazon. Apparently there's a glitch/bug in the website, and the Karu can be delivered to you all. Patricia has escalated and apparently it should be fixed in 24 hours. Add it to your cart, and checkout tomorrow when it's fixed, fingers crossed.

The deal runs for 11 days so there should be plenty of time.

  • Koda 12 gas for $488 is a steal.

        • Thanks mate.

        • I went looking and couldn't find it either, thanks for the link

        • Doesn't come up in search for me either…how did you find it?

Can you find Koda 16? :)

          • +1

@caprimulgus: If there is similar Koda 16 offer, I would jump on it straight away and end up with 2 ovens :) I searched Ooni on Ozbaragain and found an expired deal, when I clicked on it it was live / available….

I've been through this with Amazon before. I can assure you it won't be fixed. They say it is sold by Amazon AU, when they fix it, it will be sold by a place called Happy Home Italy or something similar. They are international and when you order through them, they cancel your order claiming they don't have stock. Wouldn't even bother.

    • Well I hope that's not the case - not doubting your experience though. Amazon would seem to be sailing pretty close to the wind to be advertising products for sale that can never be fulfilled though…hmmm. Wait and see I guess.

    • Ah, so thats why my browser asked if I wanted the page translated from Italian.

  • +2

I did buy a Koda 12 gas back in the day from Amazon last time they sold them (maybe 2 years ago). I love it so much. Highly recommend.

FWIW when making pizzas at home I prefer to keep them smaller so they are easier to launch, which means I've never regretted having the 12 instead of the 16.

    • Koda 16 is double the price of Koda 12, so big difference in price, which is not justifiable of what you get. Having said that I think Koda 16 should be easier to cook as the pizza is not as close to the flame so does not get burn edges, also it has thicker stone, so retain more heat!

  • Karu v Koda - what is everyone's thoughts (for a beginner - using at home only)

    • Most people cook using gas, cooking with wood does not add much flavour to the pizza in the 90 sec cook time, but it's pain to maintain wood burning.
Edit: For really big sized brick wood burning ovens, it is different story as you can cook multiple items / pizza at once.

    • I went the karu because I wanted the option of using wood as well as gas (gas attachment sold separately). This is a really good deal

    • +1

Gas is better to start off on, allows you to focus on making and cooking pizza, not maintaining a fire. As huntabargain alluded to, the smaller the fire, the harder it is to maintain a stable temp. When youre trying to maintain a fire that could fit in your hands (ignoring the other issues with holding a log fire), youre going to be paying a lot of attention, not like a decent campfire sized stack of logs and embers in a big woodfired oven.

TL:DR - Gas is easiest especially for a beginner

  • No Koda 16?? I wonder if it'll be in the eBay sales tomorrow?

  • Any suggestions on peels?

    • +1

Bunnings used to have a peel and wheel cutter pack which was very cheap, and the peel was decently stiff. Around 11 bucks

    • Wood peel is good for launching as pizza does not stick as much, only thing you need another metal turning peel for rotation / taking out. Another good option is to get perforated metal peel, which you could use it for both launching and taking out.

    • if you are making smaller pizzas for the Koda 12 etc then this is a good option, just dust it with plenty of semolina before placing the pizza on it to stop it sticking and help with launching it
      https://www.spotlightstores.com/kitchen/food-preparation/ute…

      • Do you get burnt bottom if you place PLENTY of semolina on peel?

        • no my bum is fine thanks :-)

occasionally it'll burn slightly in parts but that's more likely if the dough is really sticky and it's taken a lot of semolina or if the pizza stone isn't clean and has some spillage on it, just don't leave it in too long and it'll be fine. I generally dust the surface with flour when making the base so it isn't sticky then dust the peel with semolina and transfer the pizza to it. Many italian pizza places use semolina

  • This was my step up to making really top quality crust, and can vouch for the ability of the BBQs Galore gas fired model at a lot less, makes fantastic pizza.

    • I am very happy with this Oven too, wish they make a bigger version.. . Do you have pictures of the pizza you made? What is your stone temp in middle when you launch the pizza?
I watched Vito videos and followed his recipe's but I heard his quoted yeast amount is not correct. I now follow Ooni app or pizzapp+ for RT & CT fermentation with corresponding yeast. You just enter all parameters, ball size, how many, hydration %, salt %, oil %, RT temp/time, CT temp/time and it gives you all the ingredients. So far perfect rise and not over-proofed.
