  • This is the 2020 one. I believe there is a new one coming next month?

    • +2

Other than the Pixel 7, I haven't heard of any new chromecasts being released soon?

      • +3

i think they mean the new firmware update for the existing model for fix issues with storage and improve speed.

        • Yep I heard about the firmware update (that was scheduled for this month but might've been pushed back to next month), but not of any new devices.

          • @johnn: if that's the case it's of no consequence

        • +6

Did jv just post without bolding something? Do my eyes deceive?!?

      • There is talk of a 1080p AV1 decoding version certainly - and I wouldn't be surprised at a 4K AV1 decoding version as well. Remember, they are requiring all 4K Android TV devices launching on Android 10 to support AV1 decoding - so it would be a bit strange if they didn't meet that themselves soonest.

    • I believe there is a new one coming next month?

I've heard of a new update about to be released, but not a new device ???

      do you have a link?

    • +2

Only rumours I've seen are a potential cheaper 1080p version, but haven't seen anything about a release date.

    • +3

      @Serpeant

These rumours of a new device coming are always out there in the ether. Some people get their knickers in a knot and get over-excited and confused between a device update or a simple firmware update. Best ignored until any actual media release from Google and I wouldn't expect anything this late in the year of before Comdex, 2023 in Las Vegas, USA next year.

Best bet, if you want one now, then buy one now. The firmware and apps are kept up to date automatically. At this price it's cheap enough, and simple to use.

    • It’s cheaper with the 2 new codes from TGG eBay than the deal from MyDeal?

      • Correct me if I am wrong but the MyDeal is the 4th Gen one to be released?

        • Don’t think so. As jv suggested, it’s only coming with a new update. You can compare the full specs on TGG website with MyDeal specs

They’re the same. Pre-sale means MyDeal don’t have stock in their warehouse

        • No they're both the same, Chromecast with Google TV- the last released Chromecast device.

Unless Google pops a massive surprise (highly unlikely), there are no new Chromecast devices for this year.

          • +1

@johnn: yes, I messaged them and you are correct!

Pre=sale made me think it was a newly released item. A bit deceptive!

      • The mydeal was $65

        • It is but I usually don't factor that in as some people may not have their cashback successfully tracked

  • +2

Thanks OP. Bought one for my folks. Been waiting for a decent sale.

  • +6

A good streaming device… good for the folks who have trouble navigating and casting from their smartphones etc.

My main quibble is that even by keeping the number of apps installed to a minimum, the 4gb storage on this device is way too miserable as apps grow larger with each update and eventually you are asked to remove apps so that an update(s) can be installed. A frustrating nuisance that should have been foreseen by google.

Additionally, secondary storage by way of a microSD slot should also have been a no-brainer by google.

While the Wi-Fi access is very good, an option to connect an Ethernet cable would have been a desirable option. Wi-Fi is not always the best option for these devices (or any brand).

By comparison, I also have an Amazon Fire TV 4K max device and have loaded it up via a OTG Y connector and USB/Ethernet hub… performs well without issues, but a Chromecast with Google TV device is a much easier solution for a person looking for an out-of-the-box and plug-in experience (once you get past the lengthy app set-ups and activation of accounts to the device).

Can't comment on Netflix performance as I dropped Netflix a couple of years back when they decided to get greedy during COVID-19 lock-down and raise their prices and drip the quality of their programme offerings. Same with Foxtel.

Anyway, good price for this device. Worth this purchase price and much easier to use than their basic cheaper Chromecast and UltraChromecast devices.

    • Can't comment on Netflix performance

Has been fine for me, but I mean I also have an OG vodafone tv box and that runs netflix fine too …

    • Thanks for your insights

      • +1

No need for that just use a usb hub + ethernet usb adapter. And you can also connect storage, i also menaged to connect a usb portable DVD player.

    • Such a shame they stopped selling the Vodafone TV. I've bought six as presents for friends and family, they all love them. So easy to set up, includes a TV tuner, USB and Ethernet ports, Bluetooth remote with excellent buttons and feel. If they didn't break NTFS support with the Android TV 9 update it would be just about perfect.

      • Android removed exfat and NTFS support with Android 9. Exfat support is coming back with version 13. There are also way around that.

      • Vf tv was the default ozbargain fav for ages , sad can’t get anymore

"My main quibble is that even by keeping the number of apps installed to a minimum"

what apps do you have installed/can recommend?
lucky i do not need any streaming apps, i have just 1, plex, playing downloaded movies from my NAS.

  • +6

everyone please buy this, no need to ask why

  • +1

nice one BG, was holding out for another fire stick but prob prefer being able to chromecast seamlessly

  • +1

my only complaint for this is the remote is far too small for my big fat thumb!

    • I barely use the physical remote anymore and just use the phone option. Always have my phone on me but remote always mysteriously goes missing with 2 kids 😂

      • +5

Props for being able to use a remote without muscle memory. It's takes me 20 seconds to unlock my phone, navigate to the remote and click the volume one level up.

Then again 10 seconds later when I realise that the volume was perfect to begin with

        • True haha different circumstances. On Android (or my Samsung anyway) you can set the remote as the quick panel button so you don't need to unlock. I also use it to turn on the TV before I get up from bed so that I can get YouTube kids ready 😂

    • Plus the remote being soap bar shaped means it always feels like it's slipping off your hand

  • Anyone know where you can get the ethernet power adaptors for these? My wifi signal is a little weak but it's next to an ethernet port and I don't need another AP

    • +2

You can probably get away with a USB-C hub. So plug power and ethernet into the hub then usb-c cable into the chromecast.

I'd look at amazon as their returns are pretty good if it doesn't work.

      • +1

        Yes i did that

      • I recall reading that one of the recent firmware updates have killed the option of using a USB-C hub now. Happy to stand corrected, but many people have been having issues with hubs lately. Unless yours still works?

        • Mine still works

      • Agree, but you need to make sure it's a USBc hub compatible with Chromecast.
Not all of them are (or feel free to read as: only the expensive ones are)

    • Ebay, chromecast ultra adapter

But like others I'd recommend a non-original usb-c adapter with ethernet and USB port to increase storage. Only watch out cos some f don't with or require an increased power output so you may need to use a bigger power brick (2 or 2.5A output probably enough)

  • No stores in Canberra have this item available

  • Anyone else find that the native apps on their Samsung TV load content faster than through this Chromecast?

    • My Samsung TV (Q70) can even play my bootlegs on plex, playback error no matter what type of video file I play.

      • That will most likely be transcoding for files it cant

    • +2

What happens is, as your TV ages, it gets slower in comparison to a newer Chromecast or a Fire stick or a Shield. So this Chromecast plugged into my 2017 TV gives the TV a new lease on life. I also find it easier to navigate to the apps.

  • Is it 4K version?

    • There isn't any other version of the CC TV

  • Is this better than Amazon Fire TV 4K Max?

    • +1

I think interface and utility due to Google TV is a lot better.

      • Thanks. Can the remote control volume? I can't see a volume up and down button, whereas the Fire TV remote I can see those buttons.

        • Volume buttons are on the side. Check 2nd photo.

        • Remote controls volume of your tv, yes.

    • +1

Would say so as the Interface is better and has a a proper app store

    • If you want to use child profiles yes

    • I have both and prefer the google one

  • Can you cast your applications on a windows 10 PC?

  • +1

Bought 1 yesterday at JB AND OPENED for full price F*&K

    • Buy this and return this new one to JB

      • can they trace the serial no. of the product for that purchase and insist on refunding the price u paid for that particular number?

    • +4

geesus never buy anything at full price!
not even a lolly or pencil

      • +1

        Wise words

    • +2

Haha that's the curse of ozbargain. Hate buying something and jumping on ozb to see a sale… 😂

      • +1

Because the correct order is jump to ozb then buying…

  • Bought one with the Netflix deal. Fyi you can install stremio.

  • Whats best way to buy a replacement remote as I have lost and don’t prefer app always

    • +4

      Probably straight from Google, $29.99.

Edit: Grab a different colour while you're at it, white is so boring.

  • +2

who is this bargains grabber guy? bursting onto the scene

  • Bought and click collected within an hour, thanks!

  • no more chances for netflix deals again? haha

  • For those who own a Google TV:

    1. are multiple profiles supported in Australia yet?

    2. Is it possible to access ABC Kids via a 'child' profile, or can you access the regular ABC iview app on a child profile?

      1. yes support
      2. I haven't check the child profile.
    • Add the child profile.
It has abc iview and abc kids learning app

  • +3

I love my Chromecast but one thing that annoys the hell out of me is the damn remote. The remote for this thing is the most uneegonomic, uncomfortable and easy to drop piece of hardware ever. Plus the volume buttons are super fiddly with the connection.

    • I use this fine, only thing I always lose it due to it being white and tiny

  • My hi sense smart tv has Netflix and YouTube, Disney plus and stan. Does this add anythings else?

  • Im waiting for apple tv 4k 2022

  • +1

Why am I gertting charged $5 for postage? I'm an ebay plus member.

    • +1

eBay has removed the eBay Plus benefit for TGG, as I can see all of their items sold are showing postage costs

Best to pickup in store to avoid the $5 postage

  • Wont let me do click and collect. Says that option is no longer available.

    • It depends on whether TGG has stock near you

I can’t check it on my end as TGG in Canberra don’t have any stock but it’s still showing it as an option at checkout so prolly other states still have it

      • I'm a bit annoyed that the Cairns store shows stock, but you don't offer this deal to anything from your ebay store up here?!

  • Nope. All our stores show stock but when I select another store I still get: Sorry, the option you selected is no longer available. Please review available options

  • Hi, has anyone used this (Google TV) or Amazon Firestick, to stream IPTV ?

If you have, which one do you prefer, and why?

Asking because I'm using several Amazon Firestick 4K Max (and Lite) for IPTV, and I'm wondering if there's any point in spending more money to replace them with these.

    Thanks.

  • +3

Officeworks were kind enough to price beat. Got it for 67 bucks.

  • I got this today, but i can not enter developer mode? Anyone experiencing the same?

    • Figured it out, you need to update it and it is then enabled.

  • Are these still $71.10 ?

Because all I see is the $99 price and 10% off with code.

    • Thanks, marked as expired :)

      • Thanks for the quick reply … and just as I was going to get it too lol. Anyway, good while it lasted.
