They are more secure from tampering with the physical card but not hacking.

      • +4

One of mine hacked last time…
It was used for healthy massage and it hasn’t been refunded for 2 months!!!

        Don’t buy them…..

    • +8

Yes I had two that had been used and it took months to get refunded. Package had not been tampered with. My best advice is not to give as gifts, and use them as quick as possible.

      • Did you have to complete the fraud form and email them back? Did you have to follow up repeatly?

I also got hacked cards, filled in the form 3 weeks ago and have heard nothing since. Not sure if I should just wait or continue to haggle them..

        • +3

Mine was hacked, and I filled out the form waited for 2 months, still got nothing.

Called them couple of times to follow up, and I was told to wait more..

          • @Doyeon: wow, thats bad. I hope you get it eventually, was it a $200+ fraud at healthy land massage?

            • @cloudy: I know! It is $95 at healthy massage …..

      • +1

Eventually these cards will have two factor

    • +1

I have used maybe 50 cards over the past few years. None have been compromised. I even take a few months to use all of them. No problems.

The problem exists, but it doesn't look to be wide spread.

      • +7

Would you think it’s wide spread if your 51st card gets hacked? If you can find several users here who have taken time to share their experiences, don’t you think there are several more who haven’t done so?

        • I've used around 30 and no problems. Who knows how widespread it is.

    • +6

Yes I lost $250 last time, card issuer or Coles would not help my case at all. Despite proof of receipt

      • Did you find out where the transactions were? You can check yourself when you check the balance.

  • +21

@WookieMonster was right about the timing of the next mastercard gift cards!!

    • +11

WookieMonster should be named the expert in all things gift cards

So it is every four months on Wednesday. Next it will be on 15th February 2023.

        • +7

Actually, my prediction would have been 08 February 2023.

Let's see if either of us are right!

          • @WookieMonster: Yeah probably better before Valentines Day.

          • @WookieMonster: @WookieMonster, do you think next one would be around Feb or we have another one during Christmas?

            • +2

@webjockey: I don’t think there will be another 10% prepaid gift card deal around Christmas (not a nationwide one, anyway). I strongly suspect the next one would be in February, as it would give time for new prepaid gift cards to be manufactured and distributed.

Traditionally, gift card deals at Coles or Woolworths or BIG W are usually quite underwhelming (at least for OzBargain standards). I doubt brick and mortar retailers would want to deal with the shenanigans of people trying to find 10% off prepaid gift cards during a generally busy period of the year (at least for retail).

      • I am waiting for Wookie's prediction to come true re 5% off physical Ampol Gift Cards! hehe

    • +14

I’ll be honest, I was starting to get worried that my prediction was off.

      • +1

Well done WookieMonster! I was sure it would be in December but you picked it.

      • +2

You were spot on and I’d already prepared thank you.

  • +2

Can these cards be loaded into Apple/Google Pay?

    • +2

No, but you can add to Paypal.

      • Thanks!

      • Is there a fee charged when adding this card to PayPal?

        • +1

          None

        • -6

Biden just authorized a $2500 fee for Paypal to be taken from your account if you sympathize with human rights abusers. I am sure our head of S. will just do a head movement like that Ms.Harris does all the time.
          Your choice!

          • -1

@payless69: Keep shouting "Lets Go Brandon PayPal" from your rooftop to see if anyone actually cares. LOL!

            • +1

@DoctorCalculon: I mainly meet refugees who escaped Melbourne seeking a real life. Feel free to donate to whoever you want.

  • +3

Isn’t that 9.5% off and 7.75% off? With the fees per card.

    • +6

      $100 gift card for $95 (5% off) = $5 profit
      $250 gift card for $232 (7.2% off) = $18 profit

      • The optimist view!

      • +11

You'll get 10% off the service fee too, so $231.30 (7.48% off)

        • +3

          The plot thickens!

          • +6

            @checkingthisout: Plus Flybuys…..thickening plot

            • +1

@Tenzin: Hopefully OP can update the title with the price. Simple math equation that we can hand to our local mathematician to work out.

  • So the $250 gift card works too about $232 ?

    • -6

      $218

    • Yes $232 per card for $250 and $95 per card for $100. + 10% off service fee.

Certainly not 10% off. Have fun doing the math!

      • $250 ones is about 8% off after the Flybuys points.

        • +3

Then 9% after the Amex points!

      • What service fee!?

  • One card hacked and I still upvoted.

    • +1

      How was the dispute process?

      • +4

No communication, replacement card delivered. However, someone having multiple cards compromised may have a hard time.

        • No communication

What is to stop someone from disputing their own purchases?

          • +2

@DoctorCalculon: Previous hacks were all spent at healthy land massage, so maybe if you get a massage there they’ll think your card is hacked too?

        • How long did it take for replacement card to come?

          • +1

@cloudy: 3 to 4 weeks. It is mentioned in the T&C that most disputes are solved in 21 days.

            • @Neoika: That’s lucky, a few of us have disputed for that long as well and heard nothing so far.

            • @Neoika: Did you provide the coles receipt during the claim process ?

                • @Neoika: That’s the reason why I have not heard from them. I just found the receipt. How can I tell which receipt is for the gift card ? I bought twice , but don’t know which receipt it belongs to.

                  • +1

@Lovesfreebies: Coles receipt shows the last 3 digit of the card that matches last 3 digit of the barcode on the back of the card.

To make your claim more convincing, you can prove that you own and have spent the whole balance on the other cards that were purchased together on the same receipt by giving cards info. If you have other cards purchased together that are not compromised, you can find the activation time online (as you lost login for the compromised one). The online time is in US/UK zone, but the minute of it should match the activation minute on the receipt.

        • Did you dispute with heritage or incomm?

    • was it with the new packaging from heritage bank?

      • Yes.

        • +1

so what did that dude spend it on this time? still pgoogle play stuff? can't believe it. why not they just enforce the card to be used with cvc

  • Any idea if this is a easy way to do money laundry?

    • +26

      Those laundry’s usually take coins

      • +3

I use Apple Pay at the local money laundry. Very progressive. I’ve been laundering dirty dirty clothes through it without any police interference for weeks!

    • *laundering

    • +5

You are better off laundering when there is no sale so you don't have to compete with ruthless OzBargainers for what limited cards there are.

  • What is it the hack people talking about? We buy the card and there is risk that no money in there?

    • +3

see comments above. the money was there, just that some dude beat u to it.

    • +2

By the sounds of it from the comments you don’t need to use the CVC only the card number and possibly the expiry. Meaning you could swipe numbers from the store. Wait till their activated with money and use it before the buyer could.

Seems like an incredibly insecure system.

      • +3

Holly molly !!! That sounds pretty bad system

      • +2

Worth noting that the expiry for all cards on the shelf will likely be the exact same (+/- 1 month at most) for each batch.

        • +4

Even more crazy when you think about it. Almost as if they designed them to be insecure.

      • +3

You can't see the card number unless you open the pack, and these are very well packaged. No one can do that in-store.

Someone would have to steal cards (not activated yet), open them at home in a way I would not know how to do 'invisibly', probably involving scalpels or potent solvent, then after noting the details seal them up again, and finally put them back on the shelf reversing the theft. Quite some effort.

Or someone figures out the algorithm that creates card numbers, expiry dates and CVCs. And/or the algorithm that links the bar-code number on the back of the pack to the actual card number. Insider job perhaps by someone in the know?

After reading this discussion I opened the 2 cards I still had left from the last promo. Both were fine with full balance. Used them up immediately, just in case.

        • There is a really good thread above that goes into detail how it happens. It’s pretty bad tbh that it can happen at all.

        • What did you used them for immediately?

        • +1

These aren't physically being compromised. They're being hacked virtually. No insider job, no solvents etc.

  • Can I pay my tax bill with these?

    • If they accept Mastercard, sure…

    • +4

Yes I did last time and it was fine. There is a surcharge of 0.2% from memory, but the discount far outweighs the surcharge

      • And I believe the surcharge is tax deductible.

      • How did you pay for it? Did you go to the ATO website?

        • +4

Nah there was a link in the email I received from a Nigerian prince

          • @nicholasv: lol Nigerian Prince.

I was reading somewhere on ozbargain that someone on here went to this ATO website and use it to pay off some of their taxes.

            • @yolow: Yeh that looks fine with the .gov.au URL. I paid mine by going onto my gov, then ato, and there was an option to make a payment on there I think. If you get stuck then reach out with a dm :)

            • +2

@yolow: there is a limit of 5 card on the easypay website and ATO website. So you can pay using 10 cards per day.

              • @SydOzber: @spk oh nice! I need to pay more than 10 so most likely need to come back and get more since there is a limitation on them.

Usually when you pay it off via the easypay and ATO, can you see the changes straight away?

                • @yolow: Takes a few days to be deducted from what you owe.

                • @yolow: takes about 3-4 days via both channels.

              • @SydOzber: @spk - Thanks. What would you put in for the "Cardholder name" section? I can see it printed on the card as "A Gift for You" or my actual name?
