Notes

  • Most VPN services have removed Indian servers due to new laws in India

  • Use ExpressVPN and connect to India via Singapore. Sign up and use the 30 Day Money Back Guarantee to get a refund

  • I can sign up for individual (all cards work, payment due sometime next month) but family sub gives me errors on all cards. Trying to find an way to fix this

  • If payment fails, try creating an Indian payment profile. You can create a new payment profile by following these steps by alcheron: go to https://pay.google.com/gp/w/u/0/home/settings and clicking the pen icon next to "Country/Region" and a link to create a new profile should pop up. You can then add details for the India profile.

    thank you for your post!
Able to switch from Argentina account to Turkish one, was pretty straightforward since I have Google One account paid in TRY using "Turkish" address already.

Initially the website didn't let me select the option for 12month plan but managed to do it when I reopened the page for the second time.
    TRY 299.99/year = AUD 25.80 (AUD2.15/month)!! yay! thanks again :)

I was trying to save a few pennies by switching my subscription from Argentina Family to the Indian Family route, but didn't have any luck.

India was failing hard for me. I would suggest others skip it if you don't already have it setup and working.

I tried CyberGhost and PureVPN (have paid subscriptions) - both kept showing prices in IDR no matter how many times I reconnected.
Downloaded TunnelBear - India not listed
Downloaded Windscribe - need paid subscription for India servers
Downloaded UrbanVPN - this one was actually the most promising. Connected to India server and YouTube was showing the correct prices in INR.

Tried to add Ubank and Citibank Plus Debit cards but both failed with error "our card issuer declined your payment. Declined payments are often due to insufficient funds or card status. Check your card or select a different payment method".

Tried to add a payment profile for India and then try the above two cards again - failed again with same error.

Changed my payment profile back to Australia (what it was originally set as).

Connected to VPN via Turkey, subscribed to family plan, entered Ubank Debit Card Details and it just worked! Thank God that is over, so stressful.

Even if you do get India working, it might be a hassle in future if you need to log back in to change your credit card as I found that even with some paid VPNs, they don't connect to India correctly.

Edit: Only other thing I can think of is to try add the payment profile for India first at https://pay.google.com/ before trying to add your credit card on YouTube Premium.

  • Just successfully cancelled my Argentina monthly individual plan and purchased a India yearly individual plan.
I used ExpressVPN with CitiBank Plus Debit card.

This did not work for me on my laptop (tried Google Chrome & Safari).
It only worked on my iPhone and would only work when I choose the razor pay option to pay with AUD not INR.
So it ended up costing me $26.95 AUD but that was the only way I could get it to work.

Hope this may help some of the people dealing with the constant declined payment errors.

Now time to get my money back from ExpressVPN.

    • +1

      Enjoy :)

It seems to work only on individual plans, not the family plan

  • Proton VPN + incognito tab+ St George Credit card. Works fine.

    • Family or individual?

  • Mine VPN to India and is showing
    IDR 59,000.00/month for individual
    IDR 99,000.00/month for family; and
    IDR 34,990.00/month for student

Is anyone getting the same thing?

    • Yes, several VPN's have done that. Which one are you using?

      ExpressVPN worked for me

      • I'm using PIA.

        • +1

PIA does not work, it'll show IDR Indonesian prices (I tried it)

All other VPN's I've tried (even Cyberghost) gives me IDR pricing

          Only ExpressVPN worked for me

    • When connected to the VPN, do a whatismyIP and then do WhoIs for the IP. I find some VPNs do not actually connect to country of choice. This may affect what shows when connecting to YouTube and preferred country.

  • Has anyone managed to get the student plan working?

  • Try using UP bank debit card & select $ pricing, not INR!

  • +1

Was anyone able to get family working with Up or Ubank? I've seen people suggest making the payment profile first and then buying the subscription. Or are the families forced to migrate to Turkey?

  • Are there any free VPN services that will work with this? Surfshark is not working for me.

  • Turkey is cheap enough, and sounds like a lot less hassle (and less risk of not working / cancelled)?
Anyway starting again with this, bit of a cluster..

Is it best not to use your primary gmail account in case YT gets barred? I've cancelled premium (argentina) and is prob easiest to add fam members straight to the Australian one before doing anything else. Or suggest setting up another gmail? The other one i got has turkey as country already so can't change it for a year (and can't invite other due to different country). (Google Play v Goole pay is a cluster too)

I assume the payment method countries can be independent of the main country account? Everytime i stuff around with editing or removing those payment methods (which don't end up removing) i get a charge of $2 or $0.17 for my efforts. Those cards want a country as part of your ID that goes with the card so assume they should be legit ones.

    Cheers,

ps. it's also a prick that CDC visa is adding 3% to international purchases so may as well not use that card either.

    • CDC visa is adding 3% to international purchases

Oh what on earth - haven't heard about this…

      • Yeah they emailed everyone..
Taking everything away and the CRO worth stuff all now :(

    • Yup, I run a secondary account. I wouldn't risk losing an account to save money like this.

      • In didn't end up opening a new one, they could find out pretty easily anyway i think, prob should have but already set up. Would have to pay $5 still for the remaining month and invite everyone again.

Wouldn't affect your main Gmail just YouTube account right?

  • +1

Thanks @I Smell Pennies for another PSA post for cheaper subscriptions.

After reading everyone's commentary and experience with India & the fact I'm on family plan - i just opted to switch to Turkey instead. It's a bit more than India but less than Argentina's and far easier of a process to switch.

Exactly as listed in OP's post - logged into current YT Premium account, deactivate and cancel plan, VPN to Turkey (I used Nord & worked just fine), Sign back in to YT Premium page and resubscribe to TRY pricing family plan.

FWIW - the account with the YT Premium plan is now also the same account that has the Google One subscription to Turkey too.

now to sit back and enjoy…. until Google decides to screw with us and increase Turkey's pricing lol

    • No worries, glad I could help! Enjoy 😊

Turkey’s pricing has increased, and that increased rate is the rate you just signed up for

    • the account with the YT Premium plan is now also the same account that has the Google One subscription to Turkey too.

Ahhh jelly - still trying to get this to work but struggling to get Google One's pricing to appear in TRY even though I've already created a Turkish payment profile!

      • If you continue to click through (even when it displays AUD), it will show TRY at the end… see the comments in that Google One forum

  • so better to create a new gmail and invite yourself and fam members or keep it simple and use original
don't really hear of many people getting barred.

Ps. pixel 7 comes with free 3 month trial but is just AU and no point.

    • +1

i just kept it simple and stuck with exisitng gmail account.

Family sharing , invites etc. already setup - literally a minute or two to get it sorted.

VPN off - go YT to cancel current
VPN on (Turkey) - sign up for new Turkey plan

  • +1

Thanks for the really clear instructions OP.

  • +1

best to buy 12 months to beat any potential price rise?

    • yup :)

    • Given that there's basically only inflation expected and no deflation, yea probably

The situation in which you wouldn't prepay 12 months? If you expect the INR amount to not increase, while simultaneously the INR continues to weaken against the AUD - in which case you'd be better off just paying month to month

  • How much is turkey compared to India?

  • +1

Used to have an India subscription but got cold feet because of the stories about Google accounts banned for T&C violation. Does anyone know if this sort of thing still happens?

    • +1

I created a secondary account, I use it for YT only specifically on devices which I don't adblock.

My LG phone lets me have dual instances of apps with separate accounts natively so I have both on it, in case I need to cast or if I'm watching something on my phone. But there's other ways to run dual instances on a phone etc

      • Yeah I might just go through the process of setting up a new account then. Cheers

  • +1

India single membership still works fine for me. +1

  • I should know this but want to double check, can I help sign up for someone, as long as I use their email for sign up?

    • +1

No reason you couldn't as Google aren't going to know the difference.

  • where do you change the currency?

    • You don’t. The currency on Youtube will update to whatever VPN server you’re using

  • Payment not going through for me.

    • family or single plan?

      • Family. Went with Turkey.

        • Yeah, family seems to not work with most of us, due to India’s strict laws

  • Currently have Indian sub but linked credit card expires next month. Hopefully can update it or I'm going for a holiday to Istanbul.

    • were you able to update yours ? unfortunately my card had to be changed so now that i've added the new card it's not liking it :( …

      • Nah couldn't update my card for Indian sub. So signed up to Turkey with no issues.

        • Yeh did the same lol…was sweating bullets that I'd have to go back to ads …! Family would kill me 😂

  • Has anyone tried to sub for individual and then upgrade to family?

    Any success?

    • No, doesnt work as you have to go through the same process of signing up anyway. Our banks are getting rejected due to India’s strict laws

  • Can anyone tell me what steps i'm doing wrong?

Registered with ExpressVPN, activated India via Singapore VPN, logged on to my YT account that has AU subscription which i've already cancelled, and when I try to renew even if I've changed my YT account's location to India, the price is still showing as AUD.

    • +1

Very weird. Try again after your current sub expires.

      • +1

Thank you. I will try again on Wednesday as my premium expires tomorrow.

Same issue for me even after trying Turkey and Argentina.

  • My final cheap Argentinian direct debit just went through, so now it's time to migrate.

Going for the annual individual membership, got taken to a page to choose AUD or INR. Ended up choosing INR (wrong option) as the FX rate was better through my bank rather than their payment portal. However, I have just read that I should've chosen AUD for it to work.

Now i keep getting payment declines and the page won't pop up again for me to choose AUD.

    Any ideas?

    • +2

Ended up going with the Turkey annual subscription which worked out cheaper than the India annual. Choosing AUD in the India payment portal makes it around $27 AUD, where as the Turkey annual is only $25.

      • Did the premium subscription started straight away once payment went through? I went with India one and then selected the AUD option for payment, my commbank card was charged straight away (pending status) but the subscription hasn’t kicked in yet.

        • Should start straight away

          • @I Smell Pennies: Thanks mate. The payment is now processed in my commbank cc but the membership hasn’t started yet. Didn’t received any email yet from YouTube or google re start of membership.. is there any way to contact their customer support team?

  • +1

ok - looks like I'm Indian for the next 12 months.

Opted for the 12 month plan to beat any price hikes.

Only issue I had was I had to pay in AUD, wouldn't let me pay in rupees with 28 degress so lost out on $2 there.

Don't forget to revoke your express vpn

  • +3

Only way it worked for me
    - Add payment mehtod using Indian address
    - then use your phone, Urban VPN free - INDIA
    - from your phone, incognito mode, youtube premium, and join - it will now prompt you with the above payment method

  • does anyone know when i use a VPN to change to India, it is giving a price in pounds?

    • Try another VPN or disconnect/reconnect until you land on a server that works.

  • To add family members.

I think you can add and remove family members anytime even after signing up to the Family plan. Just make sure you create a Google Pay profile for them in the same country e.g. if you're on ARG plan, use Messi's address… but i'm an Apple user and don't use Google Pay for anything else. The only problem with this way is that it might mess with their direct debit arrangements.

    • My partner seems to have problem when I switched from India account to Malaysia account for the Family Plan. We both are Apple users and he does not have any payment setup other than his Aussie mobile tel. I have successfully re-signed up Premium Family Plan via Malaysia but his account no longer Premium. I then decided to remove his account and re-invite him but unfortunately Google knows that we are in 'different' countries. Do you know how I can get him back on to the Family Plan?

      • Disclaimer: I havent tried the below but this is my theory, see if it works:

        1. Go here and see if he has a payment profile (https://pay.google.com/gp/w/u/0/home/settings). If he has, scroll down all the way you should be able to "Close payments profile". Do that.
        2. Now, go to Payment Methods and add a new method using any credit card but ensure for address that you use a fake one in the country of your Family Plan (e.g. Malaysia?). Save and you should have a new payment profile in that country, in the same country as your premium account.
        3. If you have made it so far as planned, try again to add him into your family from your premium account.

Let me know how you go if you are trying this. GL.

I think Family plan worked with my Bankwest Qantas Debit Mastercard. My google account was previously using my 28 degree card, I changed it over to my bankwest card since that recently got 0% fx fees added to it and google said it supported automatic payments etc and it looks like it went through ok.

  • Has anyone successfully been able to change credit cards once signed up to the India sub?

It keeps saying try another card.

  • +1

Hey I've been on the single India plan for years suddenly not accepting my 28 degrees card which is still valid - anyone seen this problem or got a fix? thanks in advance

    • I think they've cracked down on us patriotic Indians.

None of my four cards work.

      • Could it be they have beefed up checks if your payment isn't an Indian address. I noticed 28 degrees let's you add another address and can be international.

  • Been signed up to a monthly individual sub to YT India for ages. Just got an email saying payment method has a problem.

Likely just an India thing, or is YouTube cracking down on people uisng any of the cheaper regions from outside locations?

    • FWIW: I was subscribed via Argentina and was on Family Sub which was due for renewal 02 Dec. I cancelled it the other day to ensure that I don’t get hit with the price hike. Decided to move to Turkey as per discussed here

I then added Turkey as a Billing address and removed my Argentinian one. I then subscribed to Personal for a year as it is all I need. It worked fine and no change required on Credit card. This takes me through to 02 Dec 23.
VPN when signing up connected to = Turkey. Card = Ubank Visa. Payment Currency = TRY Total = 299 (AU$24.30).

Sidenote: Only the Personal plan was avail for annual subscription. Family could only be purchased as a monthly sub

  • Am also getting payment verification errors - time to move to Turkey or Argentina

  • +7

Update for those having trouble with credit cards declining:

The reason why bank cards are declining is because of a recent (well, last year) change in Indian laws. All bank branches located outside of India will be declined. It is due to this reason and this reason.

Well if that is the case, please continue to sign up via Youtube Premium Turkey. It will be a breeze (albeit a slightly higher cost monthly), and for many of you, you will not need to enter a new address - so it took me like 10 seconds overall to sign up

    • Thanks Isp, just so I don't stuff up the change from India to Turkey. Did you just follow steps in link you provided? Did you go for annual individual? Thx

      • +2

With Turkey it was very simple. I went for monthly family plan, and it did not ask for an address as I already have a Turkey one on file. Switch took like 10 seconds

Just follow those instructions and you’ll be fine

        • Just signed up to Turkey one also and it was so quick.

    • I already had a Turkish Payment method because I signed up to Google One

      • Flew to Istanbul (for some reason the first time it put me in the czech republic, but a restart of VPN fixed that)
      • Went to https://www.youtube.com/paid_memberships
      • Cancelled Indian subscription
      • On the same page clicked "Learn More" for the option of family plan (TRY 59.99/mo)
      • Went through the steps, added card details and my Turkish address was already populated
      • Successfully signed up
      • Flew home
  • Did anybody try to purchase Google gift card in India and pay for the YouTube family plan using the gift card?

  • Hi guys, I had my Youtube Premium Family Plan via India since Dec 20. But due to recent change of bank requirements, I decided to end the subscription but signed up via Malaysia even though it is double the price of what I used to pay via India. I didn't mind paying extra since it is still significantly cheaper than what we get charged here in Australia. To my surprise, signing up via Malaysia was easy. It did not even request for my home address. So far Youtube and Youtube Music both work for me except for my partner's account. I thought perhaps if I removed my partner's account from the Family Plan and re-invite him to join would work. Unfortunately he can't join the Family Plan as Google detected that we are in 'different' countries. Is there anyway to get around to include him in the Family Plan again?

    • Both accounts need to have "payment profiles" of the same country

  • I think I just lost a month when I signed up to 12 months from India, it did not add up lol

Edit: Up card worked like a charm and I take my words back. YT added that month to my subs.

  • Is there anyway to add family members after signing up? I signed up for a family membership but now trying to add family member is not working. Family members do receive an email however when they join, they can’t seems to have premium features.

  • Has anyone seen any price increase on https://www.youtube.com/paid_memberships? I am with Argentina subs and the email said the price will increase to ARS 699 from Nov 21 but still showing ARS 179?

    • It applies on your next invoice i.e. "next billing cycle starting on or after 21 November 2022"

  • Getting payment issues too. How do you prepay for a year of membership? Thanks!

  • As of today, according to Google a monthly membership is $2.34 AU via Indian and $2.39 via Turkey. As I don't have Express VPN but instead have PIA, Turkey was easier and only 5 cents per month more expensive so not worth paying for an Express VPN sub.

    • +1

Yup, 100%. I cancelled my Express VPN on last day of trial. Refund just came in today.

India didn't work for me anyway (family sub) so had to do Turkey which took like 15 seconds
