Tidal Monthly: Hi-Fi Arg$99 (~A$0.76), Hi-Fi Plus Arg$145 (~A$1.11), Family Arg$225 (~A$1.80) @ Tidal Argentina (VPN Required)

2130

UPDATE 7/4/23: CONFIRMED STILL WORKING WITH VARIOUS VPNS AND CARDS; SEE COMMENTS

Reposting/reminding that Tidal can also be subscribed via VPN for massive savings. $1.48/month for Hi-Fi Plus is crazy value, with up to 9216 kbps
Master Quality Authenticated (MQA), Dolby Atmos, Sony 360 Reality Audio, and HiFi.

NOTE: If you are having issues with payment method, on the C.C. confirmation page, disable VPN before confirm to pay

Sign up is very easy. Note this works for new accounts only, existing accounts with old AUS subscriptions won't work and will convert to AUD when signing up. Just make a new account with a different email if this is you

1. Turn on VPN to Argentina. (Nordvpn, Surfshark both worked for me. Others likely do too.)
2. Click on deal link to pricing page, or here: https://tidal.com/pricing
3. Ensure pricing shows ARS currency. If not, try a different VPN.
4. Click through registration process on the plan you want. Note if it shows up with $145 in the later steps dont worry, the system clearly means ARS 145.
5. Australian credit mastercard worked fine for me. Trial period is 30 days, so you won't be charged till then anyway.
6. After sign up, you can turn off VPN, verify your email address (email comms will be in Spanish). Sign into your devices and play like usual, without a vpn required.

Please share your experiences with what VPN/cards you used to help others.

If you want to transfer your playlists over from other services, go to https://tidal.com/import-playlist

Hi-Fi plus is usually $23.99/month AUD.

Advice if using family plan as per outofgamut comment: Quick word of warning: when you invite “family” members to the plan they MUST connect to Tidal via VPN to Argentina for their conformation following the invite or they will get rejected. Can then use without VPN following that.

            • @krisspy: yeah would be hard being a new format but easy enough to ignore it.
As i said, a lot don't buy a DAC based on MQA ability but some Chi-Fi brands support it anyway.
Tidal is that cheap with the VPN that it's not worth thinking about for too long.
Still like listening to own library too when sick of streaming.

Sony's LDAC is pretty clean for bluetooth with their headphones - agree as much as you need for portable.

        • Yes. I agree. I saw the video and could not believe it at first. While mqa is not a bad idea, the way Tidal market it as the way the music was mastered is the deceptive part.

Most sound engineers would master tracks for commercial use which means 44.1khz at 24bit

  • +1

    I think family is AR$ 225

  • +1

Does it renew at that cheap price every month?

    • Yes, unless they raise the price in Argentina.

      • +1

which will be like cents, since its Argentina.

        • Except that Youtube just trebled the price of premium in Argentina :s

  • +1

I prefer Amazon hd. Tidal is average and the mqa stuff is only clever upsampling. I prefer flac files

    • +1

Tried both and Tidal has the better selection of music unless it has improved recently.

      • Yep tidal does have a better music selection. The interface and search were lacking though. Amazon works for me until spotify hd comes up

        • Spotify HiFi never happening apparently at the stage so you may be waiting a while mate lol.

          • @G-rig: Oh yes. They are taking their sweet time. Amazon hd is my go for choice for hi-fi music

            • @Raj09: Spotify isn't even that cheap without HiFi now, be good if they did it as I imagine the algorithm good and is pretty mainstream.

Haven't tested that, how much is Amazon Music Unlimited?

Do you use Alexa or Amazon devices?

              Cheers

              • +1

@G-rig: I pay $11.99 for amazon music unlimited. You can sign up and can have 3 months free.

I had it on trial before so I'm pretty sure that it still running.

I have prime and you get a discount to sign up. I was using tidal on a deal I got here and using a fake cc for a trial of 6 months. I can compare both. Overall I prefer Amazon music even though the interface still needs work. The mastering quality is different to what you hear from tidal. It's a matter of personal preference however.

I do use prime video and you can have alexa play your music on your TV as well.

                Hope that helps

                Cheers

  • how do people go about payment and using their cards with a foreign billing address that isnt theirs?

    • No address needed for Tidal. And most cards have seemed to work without issues.

  • +3

If you have a system that can make use of the sound quality that Tidal offers, for under ~$20/year its a no brainer. It is a noticeable difference compared to Spotify.

  • +3

This probably goes against the whole OzBargain way but, one thing to note with stuff like this, Tidal pay more to the artists than other streaming platforms. Also consider that artists probably earn less if you subscribe and listen via a different cheaper country.

May seem a bit weird but I kinda prefer to pay for Tidal properly. A bit like downloading a copy of an artist's latest concert but buying a copy of it anyway. I have bought a bit of merch over the years too.

    • +3

I feel like the $ per play is probably the same regardless of country signed up. They also have up to 10% of a HiFi Plus member’s subscription fee will be directed to each subscriber’s most-listened-to artist for the month based on audio track streams.

      • +1

Yeah I dunno. I looked it up before I made my comment and they mention that it's not the same. Can't be sure I guess.

  • -5

What is Tidal? Never heard of it.

Had Tidal family for about a year or so following the Argentina post on Ozbargain. I’m very happy with it but I also have Spotify - a family sub account I bought off eBay for $7 some 2 odd years ago. Best investment ever.

Anyhow: I use Tidal quite a bit with a selection of the too many headphones I bought following some of the deals here…

Quick word of warning: when you invite “family” members to the plan they MUST connect to Tidal via VPN to Argentina for their conformation following the invite or they will get rejected. Can then use without VPN following that.

    • +1

Thanks, will add advice to post.

    • +1

a selection of the too many headphones I bought

I'm curious to hear of the brands / models in your 'selection'.

    • a family sub account I bought off eBay for $7 some 2 odd years ago. Best investment ever.

      How does that work?

  • +1

Audio or includes music video also?

    • +2

      Videos too

    • yes.. they have some nice collection there

  • Guys if you share the family ensure that the family member creates account with Argentina vpn as well, otherwise they won’t be able to accept the invitation.

  • +1

Thanks OP, sub and got mine working, giving Spotify the flick as it starting to costs too much with everything else going up in prices, some things got to give.

    • Spotify is just as cheap with VPN. Why not have both?

      • +1

is there a guide for spotify? I cant see one on OzB. I've read somewhere Spotify is quite hard to do with the VPN because they require a local mobile number, no?

      • I don't think so? Most recent spotify deal I saw through Brazil was still $150 or so per year.

  • +2

Also great for the DJs out there using Serato / Rekordbox / DJay

  • I am an existing user, are they raising prices in Argentina for Tidal just like YouTube?

  • Cards keep rejecting, tried Up/Macquarie/Wise/Revolut/Crypto.comCard/SuncorpCC, with and without a VPN :(

    • +1

You need to disconnect the VPN at the payment page.

      • I did. Full message is: Your transaction could not be completed. This could be due to incorrect credit card details, an expired credit card, or restrictions from your bank. Please try again or use a different credit card. If you still have problems, please contact the bank that issued your card.

Tidal plus Roon plus KEF LS50 Wireless II is a setup I have and it's awesome. You need good quality source to drive good speakers.

    • Shame the Roon lifetime subscription is so expensive, about A1100 now. Hopefully they maintain the service for many years to come but it does sound like the end game for a streaming solution in your home.

Roon ARC looks good, to be able to play your own collection out and about. I'm currently using and pretty happy with Volumio (Raspberry pi4 - ADI2 Pro - HS80M active monitors). They may have that feature but on the old virtuoso plan (not premium).
Still a few quirks with the way it treats your own media library playback (doesn't work as you'd expect like Foobar)

That Roon algorithm would be sweet to mix your own content with streaming content. Maybe I should test it sometime.

  • I signed up for the family plan, but when I try to invite a family member I get the message "The family plan is available only to your family members with an account created in the same country as you"
Do they need to create a new email address with the VPN on to get around this? I was hoping they could just sign up using their current email with the VPN on of course.

    • They need to sign up while connected to Argentina via vpn. Don't need to use the vpn after that.

    • +1

create family first or they have to use VPN at their end as usual with most of these hacks

    • wasn't like that before but makes sense…

  • can anyone confirm if there's any integration with Google Home? As in, playing Tidal music by saying "OK Google, play some music".

    • Voice actions aren't available for that app (so not natively supported on nest yet). Works for phone (IE in car with normal Bluetooth). I don't tend to use it that way anyway at home unless just ask for a radio station or playlist.

    • +1

I signed up, and just found that is an issue. It does not integrate in natively (eg going into the Google Home app and setting it up as a music service, and there is no apparent word for them trying to support it), rather you need to cast from the app or do some other workaround like save the music offline - most of which negates the advantages of using the high quality options. I have a couple of chromecast audio pucks with optic out I hoped to use, but no.

My Yamaha receiver claims to support Tidal, but when I tried to login using my new account it wouldn't work. I have now found out that Yamaha have discontinued support for the "AV Controller" app and instead you need to use the new MusicCast app that (for me) keeps forgetting my receiver (which is running the latest firmware) so I have to keep setting it up, and it frequently then can't find the receiver. Sigh.

  • +1

I use and love Tidal. Music quality comes first then whatever else. I also don't have any fancy smart devices in my house.

  • +1

Those with Sony XM 1000's headsets can setup 360 audio with Tidal

  • Just letting you guys know, PureVPN doesn't work.
It's saying that Tidal Service is not available in your country

    • +3

Tunnel Bear worked great and free

  • It didn't work for me using 3 different CCs… I called ANZ and they said there weren't even any declined attempts to charge… so seems it's a Tidal thang.. (i tried both using VPN and not using VPN) Dang… was hoping to pay less than my AUD family rate!

    • You need to disconnect the VPN once on the payment page. Worked with 28 deg :)

Oh, and use a new email account as you'll be locked into the country pay rate that you initially made the account

      • +1

        tried 28deg too!
and used new email… when disconnected from VPN still says $145… but still declines all CCs…
(and even tried using my phone on data incase my IP address had been associated in the denial…)
        and tried different browsers!

        • Same here, tried all of the above and using a Visa Gift Card which has worked for everything in the past.
I am failing Tidal's verification before it even sends the data to the payment gateway.

      • thanks, this did the trick.
Been trying 5 different cards, failing.

        • Which trick worked?

          • @Ntsh: Turning off the VPN when on the credit card details page before pressing confirm.

            • @FirstWizard: Hmmm… When I do that, the page refreshes and I have to login again… That happen for you?

              • @Ntsh: no, I'm using google chrome with the surf shark VPN chrome plugin.

                • @FirstWizard: thanks. I'll keep trying!

One last question… were you finally able to use a card that had previously failed/

                  • @Ntsh: yes.
                    It's a Revolue non-disposable virtual-visa card.
Was the first card I tried and failed

  • Managed to sign up fine, but then realised afterwards Tidal doesnt work with Alexa on an AUS Amazon account…

    • Yes it does. You have to download the Tidal skill, then activate it as default music app in the Alexa app.

      • The Tidal skill is only available on US Amazon accounts?

        • +1

Same question here. I followed the instructions here and Tidal didn't appear as an option, unfortunately.

Edit: In the FAQ on the same page as above:

TIDAL is only available in the United States on Alexa. That means you need an U.S. account on Amazon. Stay tuned to find out about availability in more countries.

    • I don't think you'd appreciate lossless music on an Alexa speaker, or similar. The idea of it is to listen to better quality source tracks on better equipment and still use your regular streaming service for general stuff, IMO. Not saying you can't but maybe have to use Bluetooth etc.

  • Can you upgrade to family plan afterwards?

  • Thanks, was looking for a cheap way to download FLACs.

    • Tidal isn't for that - would you bother anyway if you can stream full quality for 1-3$/month?

      • Well I've just downloaded 6 or so albums in FLAC format using this. So it does work just fine.
I have a select number of albums I like on my Plex server for lossless streaming locally.

        • is it that other github software/hack or can you brows to a cache location on your pc/phone?
you may not even be pulling down pure CD quality FLAC according to the comments above.

          • @G-rig: I think for tracks that only have 'Hifi' availibility rather than Master, will be a true CD FLAC. But if it has a master track, i think it might always download the MQA

            • @OzBerghainer: yeah that sounds right.

              • @G-rig: I think I've been downloading MQA actually, I'll check to see if I have been wasting my time and need to switch to the Hifi version

                • @theguyrules: Would be a mess to keep track of what's what otherwise.
Surely there are some file analysers to inspect the coding to confirm all of these suspicions and speculations.

                  • @G-rig: Yeah, audiophile stuff gets weird. I just wanted some nice high bitrate files.

                    • @theguyrules: Yeah CD quality is good, youtube music and spotty sound like rubbish in comparison.
Main thing is getting a good combo of gear that works nicely but having a clean source/file is great to start with hey.

                      • @G-rig: So true audiophiles would likely prefer the hi-fi streaming quality over master when in tidal due to MQA not actually being good?

                        • @OzBerghainer: Sounds like that's the case. Mosly just people without an MQA capable DAC that are upset.
Having said that, I still chose one without MQA for the outright quality and detail (RME), and cd quality is far good enough. Don't go looking for non MQA copies to play on my desktop setup but could i guess (iFi Zen) - so if you have an mqa decoder use mqa why not, but wouldn't buy a DAC just for MQA capabilities (and most people agree not worth the extra cost).

                          • @G-rig: Yeah right. So for me, listening without a DAC, Hi-Fi option (lossless CD quality) is a better all round option to stay on rather than Master tier. Still going to be much nicer than Spotify's 320kbps AAC's.

  • I'm only using Galaxy Buds+ to listen to Spotify. Will I be able to hear any improvement in sound quality in Tidal?

    • test and see, free trial

ps. Been using brazil for ages, not worth changing to save $1 extra

  • -3

Is this against Tidal's terms of service?

  • +2

Thanks OP! Grabbed this to integrate it with my Plex Pass.

  • Does Tidal Plus have large selection of Japanese music?
Need to create a new account or can use existing free tier account?

    • +1

New account. Can transfer playlists etc over if needed

  • +1

All worked perfect, thanks OP (and others who have commented).

Tidal Family Hifi Plus, using CBA Mastercard (didn't have to disconnect VPN on payment just left it on), via NordVPN using Chrome Incognito (I don't use Chrome for anything other than VPN stuff, so no prior cookies/tracking).
All secondary family accounts linked perfect using the VPN methods noted above, and all confirmed/activated without issues.

My only tip is when using VPN obviously page loads are a lot slower. Wait for everything to load completely before moving to the next page. On sign up, I initially didn't let everything load and an error message came up on Tidal saying blocked user due to speed in response or something. Just let everything load completely before selecting cookie preferences and user names etc.

Anyway thanks again… bye bye Spotify!

  • Thanks, use TunnelBear VPN, signed up new account, use HSBC visa debit card (have to turn off VPN before click confirm)

  • -1

@All - on the iphone , the spotify app has a half decent EQ function . With Tidal & YT Music - I can't seem to find any options, just streaming quality. Is that normal/correct? Just curious.

    • +2

perhaps tidal believe customising EQ removes the point of Lossless studio quality

      • Yeah you shouldn't need to touch the eq on good setups. Headphones can vary a bit depending on the model but that's more of the headphones problem.
Purists will leave the eq flat.
Although my DAC has some quick base treble adjustments that are handy for some less than perfect recordings to change the sound to ones liking, never need to thou.

  • Currently blasting the raw FLAC file for Daft Punk - Something About Us

    Trust me tidal is awesome

Been using it on two months trial for $6 Aud. Loving it. Just used a program called Tidabie to download all my saved play lists to my HDD. ($14 month tidabie) in hope of cancelling my free trial of Tidal and just listening to my downloaded files. Now this deal is up ill try it and carry on using tidal.

Hardware - ibasso DX170 and moondrop kato iems.
    Top set up.
Chifi is a whole new world of awesome music experience for relatively good prices.

I guess my question here is can I somehow transfer play lists from one tidal to another tidal account?

  • +1

Used Revolut virtual card and it worked. Other cards didn't work for me.

  • +1

Nice…signed up for the framily plan using nordvpn and a nab visa.

  • +1

Worked for me too. Signed up. Gotta work out if and how to transfer play lists from my other Tidal account? Anyone know if possible?
