Note: this is not the 4K version

    • +1 Full HD aka 1080p as noted in the description but not the product name.

I wonder how many people bought this not realising it wasn't 4k that have 4k tvs? And then I wonder how many of those wil never notice

        • I would have probably bought it without realising. Didn’t know there were two versions!

    • But this version has AV1. The 4k version has old/weaker hardware that cant do hardware decode.

      • Do you know if either can play local media from a usb?

        • Don't think so. AV1 is more for streaming use.

        • +2

Yes you can, just need an OTG splitter.

I got this one from AliExpress which works well, can't use a portable hard drive though unfortunately even with a beefed up power supply, but USB sticks work.

          • @mangobango: I've bought this - https://www.kmart.com.au/product/3-port-usb-c-to-hdmi-adapto… (can't be bothered waiting 4 weeks from Ali) and it works fine on a computer, but the Chromecast won't show any USBs that I plug into it. Powers up fine but no device ever shows up. Was there anything you had to do to make it happen? All the artcicles say "Plug it in and it will ask you to format", but nothing :/

            • @bUrd: For what it's worth I never had luck with any of the hubs that I tried with it, but this splitter cable worked. Not sure if it has something to do with how data is pushed through a hub rather than a cable/splitter?

Also did you try a USB stick or a portable hard drive?

I didn't do anything special, just plugged it in and it worked, though if you go to the settings and select the expandable storage it'll just boot back to the home screen which was weird, but Kodi read the files just fine.

              • @mangobango: Tried five or so basic, plain old USB sticks, not a hard drive. So next to zero power requirement that would stop it from being able to load. Even tried a Macbook power adapter to make sure it had enough watts.

I'll order one of those splitter cables you linked to and just wait until February for it to arrive :)

          • @mangobango: Hi mangobango, good to know this one works - I'm wondering if anything similar from ebay/amazon should work the same way, albeit bit higher price perhaps. I guess if stick to USB stick should be fine (no power requirements like SSD HDDs etc).

Does it show up as a separate drive? Was just thinking it may be ok for emulator games storage & PVR, probably not enough space to use as a NAS really. Easier streaming most stuff these days anyway.

Ps. Got a RPi4 on the network, it's set up as a dedicated music streamer config but can probably access a folder for that use, haven't tried it with the Google TV and Kodi or RetroArch yet

            This one looks alright https://www.amazon.com.au/Adapter-Splitter-Charging-Compatib…

          • @mangobango: Don't see the point of the extra storage unless you apps go over the limit?
Testing out the splitter - if you format it using the GTV option, when you plug back into pc to copy stuff it doesn't recognise it so have to format it again.

After reconnecting (formatted) the GTV doesn't really recognise it or promt to set up the storage drive again - just says ejected/not connected. Bit useless.

            • @G-rig: You shouldn't need to reformat it every time, I can copy movies and whatnot to it just fine and plug it into the Chromecast via the splitter and watch them.

I would advise against formatting it as extended storage in the Chromecast settings.

              • @mangobango: cheers mate, yeah that's how i expected it to work too. It's just that after i set it up orginially on the chromecast as storage, when i went to connect to pc it said have to format it to use ffs.
Now can't get the chromecast to see the drive again (just says safely ejected). May have to look at clearing the cache on that system app.
Can't even install retroarch from the play store or an APK, looking for a compatible version. Nothing much working this morning :(.

                • @G-rig: I just searched it up and it needs to be formatted to FAT32 if that helps. Should detect it after you do that.

But yeah it can be a bit of a pain sometimes as it's not necessarily an "official" functionality, in the sense where if it was they'd have a USB port on the Chromecast.

A bit fiddly but hopefully it works for you.

                  • @mangobango: I Just put in a different 16GB drive and it was recognised, and let google TV format it as storage. It also worked this time in moving the apps to storage. Perhaps it just didn't like the other 32GB drive after I was stuffing around with it. Ps also read up on it, but wasn't seeing it. Guess I'll just use the smaller one.

Edit: are you saying you format with the google or on pc? when connected this one to the PC it has to be formatted as it's a different file system to tv storage. defeats the purpose, used to happen with my sony tv too when a hard drive is connected.

                    • @G-rig: These things are pretty selective! I have a 32gb Kingston stick which works, but when I go to the USB storage in the Chromecast settings it just boots back to the home menu. 16gb might fare a bit better by the sounds of it.

Yep format it on PC to FAT32 and it should be fine. It will act just like a regular USB stick, but not as extended storage (ie you won't be able to install apps and whatnot on it).

                      • @mangobango: Oh thanks for that mate. That explains why I couldn't really see it as part of the Android storage. You kind of need a hub for expandable storage plus a hard drive. Don't you probably a while before you run out of space for apps.

                      • @mangobango: Probably just send the splitter back to Amazon, not worth$20. Kind of pointless or unnecessary - and I noticed the Google ethernet adaptor doesn't work while using the USB spitter.

Better to just use a network drive for apps like Kodi, and steam link etc.

The stupid thing is you can't switch to using WiFi on the Google TV unless unplug the ethernet cable.

The OTG spiltter doesn't even work with the phone.

      • I'm not sure about the 4K hardware being weaker…
        4K: Amlogic S905D3 (1.9 GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A55) and Mali-G31 MP2 GPU
        HD: Amlogic S805X2 (quad-core ARM Cortex-A35)[

      Half Definition :)

    • Good pick up - HD isn't 4k.
It is reflected in the price anyway (4k doesn't really get below $77 or so).

I'm not sure who would only buy 4k unless they have a very old 1080p telly with no intention of ever getting a better one (and worth spending the extra to future-proofing).

  • Do they have a Kayo app?

    • +3

Yes, just download from Play Store. Edit: Info.

      • Thats good. I have to screen mirror as fire stick does not support kayo

        • +2

You have to sideload it. Not ideal but it does work.

        • +1

Chromecast with Google TV supports pretty much all the popular streaming apps.

          • +3

@jv: And many unpopular ones too!

            • +1

@M00Cow: also a few neutral ones.

  • +4

anyone else find these remotes really slippery, the fire stick remote is a lot better

    • +7

Get one of these. Also makes it easier to find it when lost.

      • -3

Also makes it easier to find it when lost.

you can also attach an Apple Air tag.

        • +5

Attaching a ~$30 tag to the remote of a $47.20 device seems like a very expensive solution

          • @Domingo: Depends how much you value your time searching for lost remotes.

            • @jv: My NVIDIA Shield can make the remote vibrate and beep when misplaced without any additional accessories.

So I spend very little time searching for lost remotes.

              • +2

@Domingo: A shield also costs five times as much.

                • @entropysbane: And does significantly more. I didn't buy it for the 'find remote' feature, that was just a bonus

                  • @Domingo: Sure, but A different market. The shield competes with an ATV. A chromecast competes with a firestick.

                    • -1

@entropysbane: I would also consider attaching a ~$50 tag ($30 on sale) to a firestick remote to be an expensive solution.

      • +1

Thanks for the link. I had never thought to look for something like this.

      • +1

wow thanks. and price also not bad. around aud4 incl gst from aliexpress

    • +2

Yes, seriously how hard would it be to make the back a textured back lol

    • +1

      Depends what I've been watching.

  • Great price for this, cheapest I've seen it.

  • Makes a handy hotel TV remote.

  • Instructions say just plug it in, connect and enjoy. Does this mean I don’t need to connect it to power point? So I just connect to my HDMI port on tv and all good? Thanks

    • Power Supply – 5V DC/1.5A via USB Type-C port

      • I wonder if you could just use the USB ports on the tv without blowing something up. I imagine most people using this at hotels aren't going to bother with an additional power adaptor.

        • You can. Depends on the TV.

        • The power pushed by TV USB is normally limited to 0.5A or 0.9A so not going to blow anything, but more likely insufficient to drive the device without freezes and generally unsatisfactory performance. Best to try it and see. I get away with using a Firestick 4K max in a Sony OLED TV, but I believe they draw less current than the one being discussed.

    • Can't comment on the HD version but the 4K version requires a power plug

yeah I am giong to wait till actually black friday this week. Amazon will go off :D

  • Can't believe they are making 1080p versions of streaming devices in 2022, especially for something as cheap as a <$100 powerhouse like the 4k CCwGTV. Companies like Google really should be pushing the 4k and up content further for the benefit of the consumer. Added benefit of pressuring ISPs and internet infrastructure to upgrade networks to handle it

    • It's understandable when the main competition (Amazon Fire TV) offers a 4K lite version for sometimes as low as $35. Unless you have a TV of greater than ~ 55" it's difficult to see any difference between FHD & 4K UHD from further than about eight feet.

      • Exactly why I grabbed one for my 32” Aldi dumb TV in the home office. It’s only 720p so no need for the 4K version. Will only be used for Kayo so I can watch cricket without ads.
