          Most however just pirate.

          • @Pricebeat: Pretty silly to use Plex to pirate when Kodi is so much better at it and free.

            • +1

@jaimex2: I posted this comment below, so will just copy paste

Maybe I don’t use it properly but I find Kodi takes its sweet time to load anything even it’s own interface and settings. Which is really annoying to me and I just give up.

          • @Pricebeat: Do pirates on Plex ever get captures by the navy, or any other authority¿

            • @FredAstair:

Do pirates on Plex ever get captures by the navy

Plex doesn’t facilitate streaming pirated content (ie from unlicensed content streams).

You can use it for your own pirated content which transfers the question to whether you can get collared via whatever method you use to get that content onto your local drive.

              • @0jay: For that purpose, you use KODI app, and install The Promise / The Crew video add-ons 😉

                • @calvin3663: Tell that to FredAstair, I’m happy with my own system

        • There is also quality to consider between bluray rip and streaming. Big difference if you have a decent home theatre with proper surround system. Streaming audio vs a DTS-MA track is a massive improvement.

        • +1

Sooooo….people go to JB Hifi, buy a $20 Movie Bluray, rip it and store it on Plex to stream it to their TV?

Yes…. Definitely…. We are all JB hi-fi's biggest customers 😌

          • @R-Man: He forgot to mention returning the DVD after getting a refund (as I did with Half-life 2 to EBs)

      • Thanks for all the explanations by various commenters in this thread. I think I finally understood what Plex does.

      • PlexPass allows you to stream your content remotely and share it with others too

Afaik you can’t legally do this even for your legally backed up physical media.

For your own content it’s fine

    • +3

Plex is a media server - your own media hosted so clients on differernt devices can see, and play those files. It has a software transcoder to output the correct formats for each device.

Plex Pass enables hardware transcoding to accelerate transcodes, so your mum can watch Bake Off on her nokia device while you watch Strictly on the ferry to Manly on your SteamDeck and not tax your server too much.

      • I appreciate the information. Saved me buying it thinking it was something else.

    • +1

You don't need to pay for it to use as a server/player.

I have used the player on pc/xbox360\xbones/tv and it works great even on an old AMD Turion 1.5ghz as a server.

      • +2

Why use Plex over XBMC/Kodi or Jellyfin? Is it just easier to use? I've never seen the appeal personally, but I do know a lot of people love Plex and I've just always wondered why when there's other alternatives. There has to be some reason it's elevated as a good option.

        • For me, I have a bunch of stuff set up for plex that I can't do easily (or at all) with Jellyfin. And the stuff that I can do will take a lot of time to end up with the same level of functionality as plex. So for me, I can't justify spending all the time to get almost everything plex offers that I already have set up and working, and then still be missing a handful of features that work natively. Of course, everyone has different experiences, but that's just my reason for choosing plex over any of the other options out there.

That said, I do keep up to date with Jellyfin every so often, and if they ever get to the point where I can switch over while having the same functionality without spending huge amounts of time setting things up, then I'll definitely consider it! It's just not there yet for me

        • I have no idea why anyone would want to use plex and I've never had a good answer to this question.

          • +2

@Budju: Pretty sure because when people explain it, it sounds redundant, because it would be if everyone used it without pirating. Which is pretty much all its really useful for.

How i understand it is people have software that scrapes pirated tv shoes and movies and collects them all into a server, then plex is used from anywhere to access that server. So generally someone in a friend group might have it running snd everyone else can login and use it like netflix. There is some kind of automatic process that keeps tv shows up to date, but i dont understand what that process is, im just guessing theres some kind of software that scrapes the web for new releases.

            • +1

@Kalo: I haven't seen that option to keep shows up to date. But I don't have the paid version.
I have to update them manually.

What it does do is updates thumbnails. Show description. Organise I to show lists. Marks ones watched and not watched

            • @Kalo: The best answer I've had. But how annoying would it be to have everyone's traffic on your own network withiut a 500mbit / 1gig connection.

            • +2

@Kalo: This is when usenet, radarr and sonarr comes out to play. Plenty of resources out. Youtube will be your friend. :)

          • +3

@Budju: I sail the high seas, so this makes it easier for me, but I have a system set up where I can tell my plex computer to keep track of any movie/TV show I want. When it's available (either the movie, or the latest episode of the show), it gets downloaded, renamed and put into a nice folder structure for me. I have a way to track my favourite TV shows, so as soon as a new episode is available to watch, I get notifications on my phone straight away on a per episode basis. Since all the downloading/managing is manual, once it was set up, I didn't have to touch anything - I just tell it what I want to have and it gets it for me. This works for all the latest shows that are coming out on Netflix, Prime, Disney+ etc, but also on a bunch of shows and movies that we can't get easily here (like stuff from HBO Max). Plex also keeps track of my progress of all my media, so if I stop watching something for a few days, it starts where I left off.

I can also access this setup remotely, so if I'm bored on the bus to work, I can start watching stuff. I also have some friends and family who use it, and add shows for them, and plex lets me share all that content with them easily without having to try figure out ways to send massive files from place to place.

For what I want, it does the job perfectly, but totally get if not everyone wants to set it up and use it. Just something I like having set up, and plex lets me use it in the best way possible for my needs :)

            • +1

@Opaquer: That's pretty cool. I now understand that it could be useful. How did you manage to set that automatic script up to choose the right quality ep each time and not some hard coded kor sub thing in 480p , or do you sometimes have issues with that?

              • +2

@Budju: I use Sonarr (TV shows) and Radarr (movies) to automatically download content. From within there, I can set up things like the quality I want (for example, I don't want 4k stuff, so only stick to 1080p, or 720p if it doesn't exist), the size of the files to download (when I started I only had about 750gb to play with, so really restricted the size of movies/shows I had, but as times gone on I've made changes to allow for bigger files), and things like language (which I'm pretty sure handles banning things with hard coded subs etc - as an example of this, I saw Black Adam was available the other day, but only KORSUB, but my setup automatically rejected it). I can also control whether to allow certain sub-qualities like whether it can be a webrip, cam, remux etc, and have it all work together to download, rename, move and handle all the back end stuff of it

It definitely took some tweaking to get it right, but in the end, it's definitely been worth it for me :)

                • +1

@Opaquer: Cool thanks for the detailed replies :)

                • +1

@Opaquer: @Opaquer Is it fairly easy to get set up? I'm not a complete novice with computers and tech, but I've never used Plex, Sonarr, nor Radarr before. I also haven't sailed the high seas in about a decade, but with all the subs getting diluted, the temptation is there.

                  • +1

@Scalding Coffee Cup: It's pretty easy once it's all set up, but can be a bit of a process if you're doing it for the first time. For example, a vpn is recommended for the high seas (which is sonarr and radarr), so if you don't have a dedicated way to deal with plex, you'll need to figure out how to install a vpn on your main machine and not have it interfere with everything else you use your machine for.

Sonarr, radarr and plex themselves are very easy to set up. People always say to install Linux and get docker and remote or whatever into your computer and do this and do that and it's infinitely better… But honestly, if you just have a Windows pc and don't want to change how you use things just for this (like me) you don't have to.

All of the services have a very easy to follow windows set up and tutorial, and if there's any issues, the respective subreddits or discords are great for help and troubleshooting, but as long as you follow the guide, there shouldn't be any issues :)

I have a dedicated Windows pc that I use for plex, sonarr, radarr and my vpn (also other services, but those can come later). Once it's all set up, there is some playing around with settings, and it may take trial and error to get sonarr and radarr to sail the high seas properly. These are mainly things like quality settings - some people prefer a lower quality to save space, some prefer higher quality and don't care about space, others want better encoded things to have good quality and save space at the potential cost or computing power down the line, some only want 4k movies and so on. Unfortunately that's all a very personal choice so I can't help, but once you find settings you like that work for you, you don't have to touch it again, which is nice

Hopefully this has helped you with deciding what to do - if you have any other questions let me know, or have a look around the subreddits or discord - people always have questions in those and people are always helpful in answering them :)

                    Good luck!

          • @Budju: I couldn't use Kodi on my smart tv because it would consume a ton of space.
            No watch together option either.
            No mobile app.
No play progress sync across devices.

Kodi is great if you have your own device with enough space. If you have more than one device Plex is better.

Any VPN tricks to get cheaper?

    • I think they've patched them now.

    • Noticed it was about $70 last time via VPN and I still didn't grab it. Would be nice to have but prob not necessary. Some good new release movies though in their own library that aren't even on streaming hmm.

  • What do you get for your money outside of the free app? I use it mainly to stream my tv series and movies

    • +3

Remote access and hardware acceleration are the main two I believe, more info here https://support.plex.tv/articles/202526943-plex-free-vs-paid…

      • +3

You get remote access without this. Hardware acceleration does require a Plex pass though.

      • +3

Believe the remote access is available for free users too. But if you want to play your media on a mobile/tablet device, that requires plex pass, as they have a 1 minute playback limit on them for free users.

You can pay for a per device once off fee to remove that limitation though, so you can stop watch stuff on mobile/tablets without a plex pass, but just depends what you want out of it.

That said, if you have a laptop that isn't running your server and you take it out and about, or a smart TV at a different place (like your parents/partners etc), you can watch stuff remotely on ona free plan if I remember correctly

        • +1

You can get remote access on mobile devices for free by using a web browser or a 3rd party app.

          • @samfisher5986: I only recall paying for the android plex unlock a single time and I've gone through a few different phones.

    • +1

You get introduction skip for tv shows. Not sure how well it works though

      • +1

I've used plex pass for many years and bought lifetime a little while ago, so have been using intro skip for a while. It's been perfect for every show I've watched - think like Netflix intro skip. It does have some limitations, like if the intro is short enough you can't use it, but other than that, it's really good. Also, on the other side of the coin, one of my friends uses jellyfin and tried to use the intro skip with that and couldn't get it to work on most shows. They ended up just removing it and manually skipping intros

Of course, there's other reasons to get plex pass, but just wanted to chime in on the intro skip

It’s TRY617.24 (AU$49.66) after discount via Turkey but they recognise the AU cards.

    • +1

"There was an error creating the subscription: Selected country does not match Credit Card country"

    • +3

Plex seemed to have closed most of the loopholes and only accept turkish credit cards.

Used to be able to use Revolut etc.

Theres some turkish virtual cards like Revolut, but you then need a turkish phone number to accept the sms verification codes.

      • Most cards generated on Revolut still recognise as AU issued.

    • Wonder how to bypass. Anyway to purchase via iPad use turkey credits like other deals?

      • They made it insanely expensive on iOS to deter people from buying it via iOS

I'm an EMBY user, from MediaBrowser days, and only recently at a mates house found that unlike EMBY if your internet is out, you cannot even access your local media library?! How is that even a thing?!

    • +2

This isn't 100% true. By default, you can't, which is stupid. But there's a setting you can set to make it so local ip addresses will work when the internet is down. Unfortunately, you have to set it while you still have internet, which is super stupid.

Once you do though, it works well (from experience). It's just insanely stupid they don't tell you that BEFORE your internet goes out first…

    • Change your config settings

  • Is this probably the best discount we will see, or should we wait until black friday/cyber monday deals?

  • +4

Honestly, if I had my time again I would've bought it again when I did, but if I was going to buy it now, I definitely wouldn't.
Plex has continually gone downhill since they removed the features people cared about and started pushing their advertising down everyone's throats. It's honestly terrible.

I understand their revenue stream hasn't been amazing, but they removed plugins, and camera upload (which were both things I used vividly) and they added their movies section that puts itself to the top of your list like every month (moves your movies and tv shows down below it).

They honestly just seem to have lost their way

  • +1

I have problem with Aussie live TV subtitle otherwise OK. Only use at home with GCCTV

    • I agree that the lack of support for Aussie subtitles is disappointing ! The forums reference that we use a different type of subtitles and it wasn’t worth them spending the time building support for a small number of users

      • +1

They knew the problem for years, just doesn't care.

        • Disappointing

  • To this day i dont get why anyone would want to use plex over a simple, fast and free DLNA setup. $120 on discount? LOL

    • +6

      remote access and hardware transcoding

    • +1

Actually no need to pay if just use at home

      • Remote streaming doesn’t require Plex Pass.

        • Yeah, what I have been using no need to pay.

    • Guess can stream most stuff and too much effort.
I've set up a dedicated music steamer though, using volumio on RPi 4. Great for playing own flac files, radio stations etc.

No idea if pi can handle the transcoding and or point to that location on the network, should be able to see it without a custom installation on the SD

  • +1

Plex is the app I never knew I needed til now. Truth is I don't need it but bought it anyway just in case Jellyfin or a viable alternative isn't available in future.

  • +2

    Jellyfin ftw

    • If people can put in the effort to set it up it's definitely the way to go. There are things Plex does better but nothing Jellyfin (or Jellyfin + another app) can't do. I personally run both Plex and Jellyfin but only let my friends use Jellyfin. Plex is just there for the overseerr integration (yes I know jellyseerr exists too just haven't had time to make the switch).

      • The other thing is, for me at least, I have a bunch of stuff set up in plex that I either can't do in jellyfin, or would require a massive overhaul of how things are set up now. Maybe there is a way to do it with jellyfin + another app, but the time investment to get it all up and running with jf again would be way too much, and not worth it for me. Of course, your mileage may vary

      • +1

Jellyseerr has been working great for me. It manages to use Jellyfin's database as well for authentication.

      • -1

If people can put in the effort, then they should absolutely go with Kodi.

        • Perhaps if you're the only one using it. I think for creating users and sharing your collection with friends Plex, Emby or Jellyfin is the way to go. I used to use Kodi, had it all setup how I wanted it with the Arctic Zephyr skin, looks nicer than any of the above options, supports more codecs on android tv etc. But definitely felt slower and obviously you can't use it on iOS devices which was not desirable. None of the solutions are perfect, gotta use what fits your needs.
IMO Kodi is a completely different use case to these.

    • Anyway to install jellyfin on asus merlin?

  • +2

So how do you even use Plex? is it for pirates with 100s of movies downloaded and Plex will attach cover art and give you a nice netflix style UI for your pirated collection?

    • +2

      Yes

      • +6

Can it be used for people with an excellent porn collection?

    • Basically. Also include music and audio books.

    • Plex Pass will allow you to download the media to your phone for when you're traveling.

    • +1

It doesn't have to be pirated. There's a subreddit for plex, and it's not unusual for people to show off their collection of thousands of ripped blu rays/DVDs! Definitely different, but for me pirated media is the way to go :-P

    • While most comments refer to movie collections, my Plex library is primarily my/our CD/audio collection. 1 playlist for my wife & 1 for myself & we have our music on the go whenever we want. With decent mobile phone coverage & internal buffering, a recent 600+km road trip had continuous tunes playing there and back. No need for paying for audio streaming services when your own library is always available.

      • Consider running other useful things on your server too. The cost of running the server may be the same or higher than just paying for a streaming service (more than a shared family plan for sure). But there are plenty of useful things you can set up :)

    • I'd recommend filebot to rename movies and series. It's not 100% but works pretty well.

  • +2

Have tried Plex a few times but keep coming back to running Kodi on my shield/android TV

    • +1

Maybe I don’t use it properly but I find Kodi takes its sweet time to load anything even it’s own interface and settings. Which is really annoying to me and I just give up.

      • What are you running it on? I've found the device makes a huge difference.

ie, its crazy fast on a intel laptop, stupid slow on ARM

        • Nvidia Shield and have tried on high end PC.

    • We use kodi every day on our various android TV/boxes. But I'm truly sick of how clunky my setup is. The idea of having everything clean & clear, with info attached is VERY attractive. It's the very reason the mrs only ever uses streaming services, despite us having everything stored locally.

      • My parents will literally pay for Binge to avoid using my Jellyfin library and Jellyseerr even though there is nothing wrong with it and everything loads faster since it's local.

      • I believe there's a plex add-on for Kodi, have you given that a go?

    • I've never had a problem with Kodi on the Shield.
Plex on the Shield however, I spent $7 I think to get the tablet app and I regret spending that much on it. The tablet app updated mid-week and down she went. Any time there's been an update to Plex or the Shield, Plex completely sh!ts itself. This is at least the 5th time since I bought the Shield last year rendering the primary reason for buying the Shield moot. I've done the whole uninstall/reinstall, cleared caches and every other half-arsed reddit solution. Even when it does work it struggles with anime subtitles and audio synch, skip forward through the opening song and watch the show buffer for 15secs to "give up and start again". Subtitles kills the battery on the tablet as well. Don't forget the userbase hack either.
There's a rabid pc fan base who defend it at all costs. I hear it works well on pc, great for them.

      • I use Jellyfin on my Shield, works excellent. Free app and free hardware transcoding as well

  • +1

    ANY PLEX TURKEY/ARG/INDIA DEALS?

  • +7

Reminder that ‘lifetime’ also includes the company’s lifetime.

  • +1

I dont understand the target audience for this, kodi/jellyfin are free and better.

    • +1

Kodi is a completely different product use.

Jellyfin is not that suitable for friends/family without extra assistance in setup and use as well as those friends/family buying special devices due to Jellyfin having much lower device support.

It completely depends on your needs.

  • +2

EMBY crew here. I am prepared to die on this hill.

  • Would it be worth it to use just as an online content streaming service?
However, It appears that this portion of the service is ad-supported. Will upgrading get rid of all ads?
Maybe I will use a trial to see if I like it first.
