is it worth the $2 saving over the ffalcon 65" from JB?

    • +65

      ffuk knows…

      • +1

at least ffalcon is an equal opportunity employer… they even let someone with a severe stutter be their head of brand and marketing…
no one could really understand why she got so angry when the trademark unveiling came out exactly as she had asked for though…

      • +9

Nothing wrong with that. Not much changes on TVs.

        • +8

I'd rather it have no smarts at all and be even cheaper. I always just plug in my own Android box anyway.

        • Only difference I've noticed over the year is that YouTube on Android 9 doesn't have playback speed controls like it does on Android 11 or 12 (on Google TV) - apart from that, like you said, hardly any other changes

      • +2

FFalcon uses TCL panels and you should be using a third party tv box like Google TV, even Samsung doesn't stay up to date.

        • My 2022 FFalcon has received 3 updates so far since August. I'm surprised.

    • +6

The reviews of ffalcon TVs is horrendous. I was considering buying one but luckily read the reviews first. Customer reviews that is. So many having failed units less than 2 years in.

      • Agreed. Cash converter was having a demo playing actual football on SBS, the quality was horrendous.

        • +8

          How about the tv?

        • +1

Yeah, that's due to the source

        • I bet the broadcast on SBS would have been standard definition digital tv being upscaled to 4K on the TV. It would look horrible on any 4K TV.

You can only properly compare when the source video is 4K.

Don't forget Blaupunkt isn't the real Blaupunkt anymore either - the original Blaupunkt company went broke in 2015/16.

So now the brand is being pimped out on random models, like Polaroid also.

It could very well come out of the same factory as FFalcon, EKO, Polaroid, DGTech etc, or not… ??

        • Images on the officeworks listing look exactly the same as the eko TVs.

          • @randomusername2017: Is probably manufactured in the same factory and just get the respective brand names placed on the TV.

    • +1

Ffalcon is 50Hz while this is 60Hz. Worth paying extra for, let alone saving.

      • +14

        Don't forget the free batteries.

      • -4

Eh? I find it hard to believe that any TV in this decade is single frequency.
You also want 24Hz for movies.

Why would 60Hz be better than 50 for a TV though? You just want a refresh rate that matches the source media.
What do you even use 60Hz for in Australia anyway? American sports broadcast perhaps?
Even The Hobbit was only 48 fps.

        • +2

Plenty of youtube vids at 60fps

          • @UrbanLegend: OK, youtube on the big TV, I had not thought of that. Thanks for the useful response.

But again, I'm skeptical that ffalcon is really only 50Hz. Shops post the wrong specs all the time.

            • +1

@bargaino: One way to find out would be to buy one yourself and let us know

            • +1

@bargaino: YouTube has been 90% of our TV use in the past 3 years.

        • +2

Why would 60Hz be better than 50 for a TV though?

          Games?

        • It's not a single frequency, it's a maximum frequency. It's not a problem until it is, so why take the risk? What does being in Australia have to do with it? Do you think a TV is only capable of displaying FTA content? Ideally, it would have a variable refresh rate, but that is too much to ask for a budget TV today.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah, but is it really lacking 60hz? Or were you just basing that on the website, which is always wrong in parts. Just saying I'd be surprised.

Separately i was asking a question about the use of 60, and a couple of people took the trouble to give valid answers, thanks guys.
I use a few streaming services, and have never seen 60Hz myself, so was a genuine question. US content is mostly 24fps, and my TV switched to 24Hz for that.

I would go with the Ffalcon 65" 65UF3 if you want that size, energy use being 300kWh against 467kWh (best of two entries, same model?)

Although I'm seeing $695 at JB HiFi at this time, was it $499 before?

  • +17

i wouldn't have bought, if those 2 AAA batteries weren't included, now gotta buy this

Same price as four Pirelli tyres

    • +8

      Yeah but are they 65"?

        4 X 17 inch tyres is 68 inches

        • Hot dam that's a good deal.
Wouldn't have mycar fit tyres though, just supply.

Cheap TVs will be dead quickly as they don't use durable expensive parts on the main board. Use it one or two years and put on the Gumtree for sale… :D

    • would your credit company laugh at you if you tried to claim extended warranty, if it broke in the 3rd year?

    • +8

What are these "durable expensive parts" of which you speak? Smells like BS.

Cutting pennies on the power-supply parts is a more plausible cause of failure.

    • bought a TCL 4k 55” for $480 in July last year, it worked well

just listed it on fb marketplace after 1.5 years of use for $150 and it was gone within 30 minutes

      • +6

So a $330 loss for 1.5 years use. Why did you do that?

If something sells within 30 minutes it generally means you've listed it too cheap.

        • +4

it's just the way it went down.

I wanted it gone quick before I travel next week, and before kids tear it apart

also I never sold a TV before. checked other listings on marketplace and thought that's the price to get rid of it quickly

I replaced it because I bought Xbox X and wanted 4k/120hz, and it just didn't do that

anyway I think it was priced fair: I got solid mileage out of it, and it has no warranty, so it's a fair price for something that was $400 brand new

also earning $200k per annum my time is worth more than bargaining for used tv price

      • $330 for 1.5 years or $200 per year.

Meanwhile I have a Sony 4k 55" bought for $1000 5 years back with great picture quality going strong for 5 years and may last for another 5 years.

Also cost $200 per year so far.

        • Or a Samsung that lasted under 3yrs before the board/transistor went and Samsung wouldn't fix it…

Both options are viable, but when you spend more and it breaks, it costs more.

I have a 75 inch Blaupunkt TV with same android 9 operating system. Have had it for a year and its been 90% fantastic for the price….

The 10% are minor gripes. It does not have very much internal memory to run everything and seems to slow down as cache builds up. This seems to happen if you hit the power button once to turn the Tv off. To overcome this press and hold the power button till it gives you the option to shut down. When you turn it back on after that the operating system is smooth again.

    • +1

I've had my 55" for about 2.5 years, I'm with you jtc13 it's been a great TV (so far touch wood). Thanks for the tip on the cache build up. It's good to know.

    • +1

My suggestion and its what I did for my eko too.

      https://troypoint.com/wolf-launcher/

Install wolf launcher, set as default much faster and less bloaty then the android tv with half page ads and recommendations.

Either that or turn off auto updates, rollback updates for android tv so its the stock version with just the apps view.

Or if you have a pihole find the urls that the ads/recommendations use for android/google tv and block.

Less cache clearing required with option 1, bit less with option 2 much better than stock.

Popped into Ferntree Gully Officeworks around 1-1.5 hours ago and saw 2-3 65's and 2 55's. Just at the front of the store once you walk in the the Google Nest Mini's. First display

  • 4:4:4 ?

    • No chance.

      • I was kinda kidding, but yeah. Super unlikely

        Man

        They ALL should be nowadays!

  • anyone know how to know if they would work with like Xbox/PS/Google chromecast to HDMI @4K 60 fps ?

I am sick of companies like Kogan saying 4k, and 60 fps, But when in reality

Its only 4K@30 fps HDMI for Xbox etc. otherwise 1080p 60 fps
play with usb etc. can play 4K@60 fps But not other HDMI things

or it doesn't support HDR with 4k HDMI Xbox/PS

    • I bought a Kogan TV (LG Panel) back in mid 2019 and it does 4K at 60fps through my Xbox One X and PS4 Pro consoles. It just doesn't have HDR. I guess they don't make them like that any more.

      • I got mine in like 2017 or something like that. May be they are better now, I just have trust issue with companies now.
But thanks mate hopefully all companies advertising 4K, & 60 Hz, mean 4k@60 Hz and through HDMI too, (not like HDMI max is 4K@ 30 Hz/1080p@60 Hz)
