My experience with cheap smart TVs are that they are slow, have low build quality and potential issues. They cut costs some where and it's always the build quality and support. They never have enough RAM on the TV too making the Android TV interface slow at responding and sluggish. Better off getting atleast a TCL or Hisense TV for better quality.

    • +5

Try adding Google Chromecast with Google TV to it and you wont have this complaint again

      • -2

Yeah that's one way. But it still won't fix the low build quality and sluggish TV menu selections.

        • +1

You will barely need to use the TV remote after that though. Android should even power on/off the TV, kind of full control

        • +2

My EKO 65" has been going well since Dec 2019.

As expected the OS was slow, but I've plugged in a Chromecast for the past 18 months and never looked back. Never have to use the Eko remote.

@b-radicool: If you're happy with it that's good. Personally i'd rather buy a TV with an aqequate amount of RAM to run the OS lag free. It's a pet peeve of mine having a slow smart TV.

          • +1

@b-radicool: Yep the tv os was slow. Ended up rolling back google tv update to the factory one not the ad suggestion infested one, then installed wolftv launcher instead and its a night and day difference.

            • @dazza826: Google updates on WebOS? Eesh, is that a thing now?!

              • @MasterScythe: I have one of the original models with Android tv, not webos. Not sure about the webos side of things.

                • +1

                  @dazza826: Oh thank god.
WebOS is SIGNIFICANTLY faster than any Android solution, and doesn't do the phone home and brackground tasks that Android is known for.
It might genuinely be night and day compared to your experiences with a google TV on low end hardware.

Typically low end Android can be unreliable and clunky. Where as WebOS is just 'slow' but 100% reliable, without random app issues, once they do finish loading. Typically….

          • +1

@b-radicool: Same, I use a fire stick 4k. Works great, picture quality is excellent as well. (I have the same 65 from that deal)

    • Sounds almost same as all Samsung and LG TV's, be happy to get 2 years without any issues happening. Cheap, fast production, barely any screws used, mostly all gluing and starts to unglue due to heat eventually due to poor air ventilation, cooling. Same old story, never bothered to rectify : )

I say, spend how much you're happy to forget in 2 years time when it's time to dump it.

  • I bought an EKO 50-odd inch from Big W and it began this strange glitching thing on the screen that looks like what happens when you smash a tv screen (this was within a few months of purchase). It eventually stopped turning on at all. That's not to say it will happen with these TV's, but worth a mention. Apart from that, it was great quality for the rock-bottom price paid.

I have been a bit too busy/lazy to follow up with them re. warranty, but hopefully they are good to deal with.

    • I have had the same issue. Mine started showing these purple and green lines about 15 months from purchase date. Sent them an email via warranty and they are quoting the 1 year coverage only. Haven't bothered to go through the ACCC as of yet.

I've persisted on using it and somehow the issue has settled down and maybe happens once or twice out of ten times..

Seem to be a fair few people with this issue, though I recognise the reporting bias of review sites https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/eko-4k-ultra-hd-an…

It is also very slow through the menus but to be honest for the price that's very tolerable and not a major issue for me.

      • I had the same issue as you both about 21 months after purchase date. I actually phoned Big W last week & they seemed aware of these issues with the EKO TV's.

Anyway, they told me to bring it in to inspect for physical damage. They ended up giving me a store credit to match the original purchase price of $599. Grabbed a JVC and was on my way. Not bad considering the TV was ready for the bin! I recommend giving them a call and asking what they can do, the store manager may still accept it even if it's way out of warranty.

        • Same here, screen had a spot where it was dangerously hot and finally it burnt through the pixel. Luckily was at the 11 months period so Big W refunded me with store credit. Got a Sony instead and I can gladly say it's better to pay a bit more for a branded TV. Unless you have the time to return the TV every 1-2 years.

        • It's the company policy that even the product is out of factory warranty, Big W will still cover if it is under normal use, just keep the receipt to prove purchase.

        • Ok good to know, thanks. I've still got my receipt so I'll give them a ring. How do you like the JVC?

          • @Samin: To be perfectly honest I preferred the EKO, screen was just a bit brighter. I can't complain about a free replacement though.

          • @Samin: I got a JVC as well, ended up putting that in the kids lounge and put the Eko back in the main.

The problem is these days is that even in one brand you gave get completely different picture qualties. The Eko 65 I got in around 2019 apparently had a Samsung panel. At the time it was on display next to a Sony there was little to no difference and picture comparing the 2.

Tried a later 75in qled 100hz and it was a massive downgrade in picture quality. Got my money back and picked up the JVC 65 instead but the old 65 Eko has a better picture. The JVC has a bit of that dirty screen effect which you really notice in panning shots. Like parts of the panel and slightly darker than others.

I've honestly had nothing but good things to say about EKO tvs. For the price point their value seemed quite nice. I didn't even have an issue with the apparent slowness of them. Did the job well for a tv at this price point! However my EKO is now retired for me but is still going very strong for my dad!

The slowness is due to not having an adequate amount of RAM for Android TV to run lag free. These manufacturers think that they can get away with skimping on the RAM amount to save a few measly bucks. They only put the bare minimum RAM amount to make the version of Android TV they're putting on it run. Seriously the TV probably only has 1GB or 2GB of RAM in it which is no where near enough to run modern Android TV without lagging. In my opinion that wouldn't be a good experience.

        these TV's aren't running android.

I have an LG and an Eko TV, both have WebOS. Both run at about the same speed.

  • Got a 55ich from Big W about 2 years ago. It is an OK for a spare TV considering the price. OS is very slow, picture quality is not the best. It also have this weird issue that it keep turning itself on once in awhile.

    • +1

perhaps your house has a ghostie that likes to watch late night TV? :)

    • My 65" eko does the same
Probably 10-15 times in 2 years

  • still running the JVC 55" from Big W, and happy with it.
It was $499 from boxing day sales in 2020 so a 70" for an extra $99 is great value

runs android but I still have a chromecast connected to it

  • Why web os!
That was terrible with my old lg tv.

    • +1

I ended up jailbreaking my WebOS tv, it wasn't so bad after that.

I think it was "rootmy.tv" in the tv's web browser and it goes from there, you can get SponsorBlock in the YouTube app and a few other things..
My personal favourite is having Pinball from Windows XP on the TV as an app.

Comes with a risk, but I did it and it worked perfectly for me.

Thats curious, because it's amazing in new LG TV's.
Perhaps it was just a bad implimentation :(

      • "Perhaps it was just a bad implimentation :("

Was terrible on my old LG, to the point I gave the TV away.
        So, hopefully it's improved now.

Absolutely horrible TVs that break just outside their warranty
Parent company AYONZ and big W absolutely disgusting rorting of ACL consumer law.

Parent company AYONZ and big W absolutely disgusting rorting of ACL consumer law.

Rorting? I think you are misunderstanding how warranties work. Just because a manufacturer says they have 12m warranty that does not mean the customer is only entitled to 12 months warranty.

A person above in this thread above said they had no problems returning one after 21 months.

      • -1

I mean they ignored all my emails for months, refused to help me get the TV back to store, then "processed my return" after I paid to get it to store, then kept stalling without actually giving me my money until i spent 2 hours on the phone with them.

And kept trying to force me to have a "repair" rather than a refund. In direct contravention of ACL consumer law.

        So yes, rorting.
