Five 3 hour TDK tapes for $2 is a good deal, but I wonder about the eBay link slipped in there as well. Are you associated with that eBay seller?

    • +1

      no im not

      • +20

probably good that this is pick and collect at store only, because anyone who is interested in these tapes could not possibly own a computer or have access to the internet !

      • +2

        are you associated with awesome

    • +1

      Woah, they still make these?!

  • +9

    back to the future!

    • +1

      Nearly there! Oct 21 2015!

    • i still have a vhs of that, dunno if it still works cause i dont got vhs player

  • +32

    I'm looking for Betamax actually.

    • -1

      sounds like viagra

    • Wow.. Betamax.. new school.

      I am looking for a Sony A3500 EIAJ-1 … anyone? :)

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EIAJ-1

    • +2

I'm looking for some cheap wax cylindars for my phonograph actually.

  • +7

The case says "Sharp and Clear" lol. 576p is so sharp and clear these days

    • +7

576p is vastly superior to VHS.

Wikipedia time: "PAL VHS offers the equivalent of about 335x576 pixels luma and 40x240 chroma"

Effectively limited to 240 lines of interlaced horizontal goodness due to the limited colour bandwidth.

    • +2

VHS is less than 576 lines of effective resolution….

  • +3

+ve only for old time sake

  • +12

Good times. But at least they stopped when they were stopped and resumed when you pressed play again on every video player. =D

    • +5

Yeah, and then they gote eaten by said player. Awesome times had by all.

      • +1

Ahhh, I remember that crunchy sound of mashed tape emanating from the VCR with such fondness.

        • +1

Our first VHS video recorder had a remote control that plugged directly into the machine so you had this 7mtr cable running across the loungeroom floor! At the time it was a revelation!

        • +4

Don't tell Nintendo. They'll release something like it for the Wii and call it the "Wii Fit Skipping rope" or something like that !!

    • No region coding, no encryption, no unskippable adverts, no Disney "FastPlay",
…. but, nah, don't miss VHS at all.

  • +5

What are these? Never seen them before.

    • +50

new technology - sharper and clearer than bluray or anything you have ever seen.

    • +27

You may see them again, as tape streamers wrapped around lamp posts. Every 3 hour tape has 259 metres of fun inside.

      • +1

I was going to say they are more useful as streamers.

      • +1 for the fun fact

    • -1

      Damn Generation Z!!…LOL

  • +24

I thought The Dark Knight was on VHS for a second :|

    • 5 copies for the price of one!

  • +13

This deal has me partying like it's 1989

  • +15

Brought back memories of rushing to try and peel the stupid plastic wrap off new VHS tapes as a show was about to air.

    • +8

And the 'fun' in writing on the labels and sticking them on the tape, then playing around with the remaining stickers…that was our version of fun back then haha

      • +10

Then pulling out the little tab so no one could record over it…..and then putting masking tape back over it because you ran out of blank tapes and got desperate….all that pausing recording during the commercials gone to waste!

        • +2

The fun part for us was recording on the end of movies to save on tapes and guesstimating when to switch to another tape during the commercial break so that you wouldn't miss recording anything. You had tomake sure everything was then labeled properly otherwise you wouldn't know which tapes to go to to watch the entire movie. If you wanted to tape over the movie in front later on, that was even more fun.

        • +1

The fun part for us was recording on the end of movies to save on tapes …

Ah - early example of your Ozbargain tendencies !!

      • +3
        • Nah, you need the stickers that come with the little graphic icons as well :)

        • I couldn't find a pic of them :( like the little soccer balls u used to stick on for sport shows :D

    • That comment brought back memories of rushing to try and peel another kind of plastic wrap as the show finished.

  • -5

WOW… i wonder if all the gen-y know what this is!

    • +7

      Yes….tapes didn't die out until early 2000

      • -7

typical example of a Gen Y'er replying thinking the general comment was specifically aimed at him/her !

    • +4

I'm in Year 12 and walked into a Year 7 class a few weeks ago. They didn't know what a cassette tape was. I weeped a little.

      • +7

I wept over the decline of year 12 literacy

        • Haha. Burn.

But yeah, the appalling standard of literacy in this country is no joke.

    • Of course Gen Y know what VHS tapes are. Ask this question again when a special on 8-Track tapes shows up on OzBargain. :)

      • Agreed, I was born in 85' that makes me Gen Y and going to the Video shop was something I did right up to the point when DVD's came out….by the time DVD's were mainstream it was cheaper to buy them at Big W for $12 - $15 than it was to incur any kind of late fee or pay the $7 a night rental for a new release….DVD is to blame for my enormous DVD & Blu-ray collection….VHS days were 7 movies, 7 days, 7 dollars….those were the days… Parklane Video

  • -1

Perfect for cheap party decorations along with toilet paper.

  • +1

great stuff. remember working in a video store back when VHS was starting to transition to DVD. We had both DVD and VHS… i remember noticing how hardly anyone had a DVD player when it all started and then slowly people stopped hiring VHS and would only rent DVD.
And who can forget the DVD VHS player combos and even the small 34 cm tv's with DVD players and VHS players built into them !!

    • My Grandma and Aunty (live together) have a DVD player / VHS combo machine. They would have only bought it about 5yrs ago. lol

    • i nearly bought one the other day.. at dicksmith too! think it was around $99 (the dvd combo i mean.. not a 34cm tv)

  • aw man i was goin thru my box of oldskool vids i dubbed of WWF and NBA……they all had funky fungus on them…what up with that?

can i chuck em in the recycle bin?

    • +3

Video tapes are basically plastic and can be recycled. Search for a location near you at http://businessrecycling.com.au/recycle/video

    • Humidity was a problem for VHS. Many of my aunties/uncles in asia often had corrupted VHS tapes from fungus!

    • +3

Nice Avatar. When did you get it :-(

  • +14

Can't … seem to fit ….. these ….. (arhhh !!!) in through the ….. Bluray disk slot.

Need to push … harder !

  • +1

Im personally waiting for a sale on 8-track players.

    • +1

Damn, beaten to it (see above) :(

  • +11

Step 1: Buy VHS tapes in 2012 for $2.
    Step 2: Wait 30 years.
Step 3: Be the cool grandpa with the bizarre antique electronics. Priceless!

  • This is insane!
It's like that deal we had earlier this year on CRT TVs at Big W.

Pretty worthless product, but I won't neg for the novelty of seeing this.

    • +1

how much were those 34cm CRT TVs at Big W again?

More or less than the $9 Dell printers?

  • +2

Even back in 1987, what was the point of a automatic VHS rewinder? Besides "Keep your VCR longlife" (easier on your recordings of Knight Rider than your tape munching VCR??) and having a crappy looking sports car next to your TV?

    • +6

Traditional VHS VCRs would wind the tape back through the entire head/capstan mechanism, meaning the tape winding had to be reasonably slow so as to not damage the tape. There was also the issue of head wear if someone rewound a lot of tapes.

Since the late 80s many VHS VCRs came with fast rewind modes that would unload the tape from the heads before winding all the way back. It was as fast as any dedicated tape winder and no secondary device to take up space.

The eBay link accompanying the tapes is selling a device that was rendered redundant well over two decades ago.

      • +5

        did u just wikipedia VHS

        • +3

I regularly used a Sony VHS VCR in the late 80s and into the 90s with a fast rewind mode. Yes, I'm old :-)

        • welcome to the internet, old dude !!

        • -1

Welcome to the Internet ? Son Im 38 I wwebsite as on the internet when you were a sperm in your daddys balls and before it was the internet, thanks for the welcome to message wurd up.

        • -1

Bwahahahahaha who negged this? Shmahoo was it you?

For anyone else who didn't get the reference, have a read here:
          http://www.penny-arcade.com/resources/just-wow1.html

        • Hhhrrmmm probably not, seems one of my friends from the big Nexus thread has got sand in their vajayjay and is totally showing me what's what by negging all my posts.

Oh OzBargain, you never fail to bring teh lulz.

        • Oh noez, the phantom negger strikes again!

Man up and out yourself Mr Negativo.

    • +1

My parents still own that same rewinder in the ebay link except it cost them less than that 20 years ago.
They were great for quickly rewinding all the rental tapes before returning them.

      • +2

I think some rental shops even fine you for something simple as not rewinding the tape before returning!

  • Ahaha don't forget that you'll get 6 hours on lp!!! I haven't seen a VHS player in years. The last time I even saw a VHS was when I pulled one apart and wrapped a friend to a chair with the tape! Good times.

  • just wondering has anyone try to buy one yet? still shows stock.

    • +1

Ive got 2 packs for pick up

  • +19

Sorry, but is everyone just +'ing this because it's nostalgic? If so, excellent.

  • +10
    1. I've been waiting 15 years for this deal

    2. Now i don't have to ride my penny farthing down to blockbuster

    3. Funny: Sony Betamax = Format Loses, Sony Bluray = Format Wins

  • +2

It's Like an SD slot for your PVR

  • old school! :P I'm amazed that such an old item has made it to the top deals for today.. lol.. I'm sure if we listed up other old stuff for amazing $$ it would do the same!

  • +2

    wow

    just wow

    what a great (useless) deal.

must resist even checking to see if a DSE near me has stock

    Edit: I checked

  • +2

How much GB do these have?

    • +2

      All of the GB

    • +5

You may laugh, but some people (ie. me) did use regular VHS VCRs and tapes to backup computer data.

      http://www.hugolyppens.com/VBS.html

From memory a few hundred megabytes would fit on a three hour tape. It worked surprisingly well and was a really cheap form of storage, but also incredibly slow.

      • I was one of those people … I bought this device from the UK to backup onto tape.. And yes .. it was slow…. Then ZIP drives/CD-RW's became reasonable in price and those VHS backup devices went the way of the dodo..

        • +1

what? They released cheap internet plans with unreliable service?

  • +7

Use to record my naughty shows on VHS. Always made sure I recorded in long play for extra recording time.

It did sux though having to fast forward or rewind to the good bits

  • +1

What do I do with these things? Are they book ends?

    • +1

      use them as door stopers

  • Cheap Asian stores still have lots of these in stock…
So, I don't expect these to rush out the door at this price.

Small asian shops in Burwood, Strathfield all are selling these cheap, including sony and sharp.
