Have one of them and love it. Never had any issues with it

Great price, but single sided scanning is a pain in the ass when you want to scan in all your official documents.
Buy the L3770CDW instead for an extra $150 👌 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/748868

Out of stock, also i've never needed to scan both sides of a document in my 7 years owning one of these

      • +9

That's great, but most statements and bills and other such things are double sided print.
If you want to go paperless, you'll absolutely be scanning double sided when you tackle your pre-digital stash 👍

@Keplaffintech: Most of our bills are - council, energy, bank statements. I don't think any of ours are single sided.

@leyton01: Just upgraded to the double sided scanner option of the B&W model for the same reason. As above, single side scanning is a right pain.

I do all my important document scanning at work, the big Canon units are way better quality than the consumer jobbies as well as they do double sided. Single sided scanning ain't that bad for home, I couldn't justify the extra $150 just for that.

    • What's the main difference between MFC-L8690CDW and L3770CDW except the 40,000 pages heavy duty cycle

    • Is the ADF reliable/robust? I have used the ADF from a few inkjet MFCs, none of them work well. Nothing like commercial printers.

If you're going to do a decent amount of scanning, check out my other post below - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13189513/redir

      • No. If you need a decent scanner like a commercial printer, look for a document scanner like a Fujitsu scansnap.

Yes it costs more than this printer and it only scans. If you have space buy an ex lease commercial printer.

    • Agreed… Single sided scanning is a deal breaker…

This from a review on the good guys:

    Bought this couple weeks ago.
Been using it a lot lately for visa application and study.
Print, scan (glass and ADF) and photocopy well. No technical issues so far.
One thing that I found out was, you can actually scan with the ADF double sided. You just need to download the Paperport software which Brother recommends and provides the link during the driver installation. When using Paperport, you will scan the front page of the whole document, then they will give you the option to 'scan the other side'. They will ask you to flip the whole document in the ADF. The software will rearrange all the documents into its correct position.
So yeah, the ADF scan single sided, but you can make it double sided with Paperport!!

If you're interested in this, I bought the Brother ADS-1700W on the strength of this - https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-portable-doc… - and it's absolutely awesome.
It's fully automated - you can just drop in a multi-page stack and it'll connect to your PC and scan and OCR the text and a fully text-searchable PDF just appears in your Scans folder. You don't even need to hit go.

I just scan and then shred everything.

    • I assume you have to pay for Paperport and its not free with the printer?

      • It's s on brother's driver downloads page.

        https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadend.aspx?c=au&lang=e…

I haven't installed yet as I'm waiting on delivery. Maybe there's in app purchases but the notes don't mention any.

Don't lose the version on the CD that comes with the printer !
That version on the download site is the latest version - and when I needed it, this was version 3.0.

But the key number on the back of my Brother is only for 2.0 - it's not a valid key for version 3 !
I contacted Brother support and they just kept pointing me to the same download page 🤷🏼‍♂️

I managed to find an installer for v2.0 somewhere out on the interwebs and got back up and running again 👌

tl;dr the Brother machines have a registration key stuck on the back, for a single version of Paperport only.

Thanks for the tip, but just to clarify - you still need to manually adjust the documents in the feeder, then it goes in the MFC twice then the software just merges the files?

Compared to true double sided scanning which scans both sides atuomatically.

I ordered this printer, for this price from TGG on 23/11/2022. there was no stores with stock local to me, so $26 for delivery with an original ETA of 14th December. Received an email on the 13th December to say: Sorry, stock shipment has been delayed, we are now expecting stock to arrive week starting 19th December. That was the last contact I have received. Just followed up with TGG online chat.. new stock ETA is week starting 23rd Jan.. so don't expect delivery until late Jan…

Only order this for delivery with TGG if you have no time restrictions.. it might eventually turn up. I am now looking for an alternative that I can buy in person, then cancel my TGG order…

    • I ordered mine a few days ago and it said In stock at the warehouse. Not anymore. Late January for me too.

I wonder if the price of this one could be used to get money off the MFC-L3750CDW at officeworks. The 3750 is office works exclusive.

    • if you contact htem on chat and say you are very unhappy and want to cancel, you'll get some 'make good' credit

  • Last job i worked at for two years used this printer at alot of their locations. Functionally it was quite good and did everything really nicely. We used it quite heavily and would always put new generic toner in, about once a year it would get to a point where it would just refuse whatever cartridge you put in it no matter what you try (new cartridge, genuine, different generic) and we replaced it 2 times within the 2 years i was there.

Could be anecdotal but they were a pain in the ass with toner in that respect for our use case(which was heavy), would probably be better in a home environment though

    • Rafter rejecting genuine, they tossed out the machine?

Should have done a warranty claim?

  • Does the brother update the toner chip software periodically?

I read that some of the older generic toners with the chip were not working.

    • yes.

    • This just happened to me, I knew there was no good reason to update the printer, but accidentally allowed the first update to go through.

Now, I have to remove the good chip from a genuine toner and replace it with the compatible one.

  • Nice pricing ! Does anyone know the price and longevity of its black and colour toner ?

  • Got Harvey Norman springvale to price match this last friday, online wouldn't but calling a few different stores to check stock and each were happy to price match without issue

  • I ordered one of these from the Good Guys in mid November at the same price plus $26 delivery and it still hasn't arrived.
Online help since then keeps saying out of stock and maybe next week.

if you contact htem on chat and say you are very unhappy and want to cancel, you'll get some 'make good' credit

      • … and then still cancel it LOL

  • I’ll cancel the order later today. I’ve already waited over a month and have had to continually chase up the order.

If they had no stock when I ordered and still claim yo have none, I wonder why they are again advertised it and taking orders they know they can’t fulfill any time soon.

The same situation happened to me last year this this lot.

I’ll ask for an immediate refund.

It will print random yellow dots which is annoying AF, and you can't do anything about it due to it being a brother security thing.

  • +1

I don't think you can use third party toners with this?
    Firmware pre updated right>?

  • Got a shipping confirmation today. Due for delivery on Friday.
