36.14 In the early 1980s, the Commonwealth Department of Aboriginal Affairs proposed a new three-part definition of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.

An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a person of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent who identifies as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and is accepted as such by the community in which he [or she] lives.[16]

      • +5

That actually makes a lot of sense to me and is pretty easy to apply, and kinda works like passports. My grandmother was Scottish so my father could have gotten a UK passport, but never did. Since he never did, I can't, because basically the connection has been cut. If he had have gotten one it would have been easier for me to go get wasted on scotch.

If someone wants to be part of an Aboriginal community they have to be accepted by that community as well. Basically like a passport but based on their history rather than a piece of paper. Makes much more sense than trying to determine people by the colour of their skin or some portion of blood and stops people bullshitting their way through it. Those communities tend to keep pretty good records of family lineage and such too.

      • Isn't that practically the definition of Native American in the USA? It sounds reasonable

    • Then I almost feel you should be offended by this unbelievably sh*thouse deal.

  • +45

I was born in this country so I’m good to go.

    • +1

      I aproove

      • +18

You're the one supporting an Apartheid pricing deal.

        • -4

$10 wouldn’t hurt when you invaded and occupied the whole land, right?

    • +27

      Where’s the cutoff point btw?
How many generations need to pass through before we stop branding some groups as an automatic victim?

Only asking because I have a personal grievance myself …
My great great ancestor ‘Coco the Ape’ had all of his bananas stollen by a rivalling ape tribe…
Because of that our whole lineage has had a mild iron deficiency..

      Where’s my reparations?

      • +1

        Huh

        • +6

Clicked on it, couldn’t see the $10 off Voucher…

          • +12

@Gervais fanboy: He's been typing it to everyone. Ironic he's calling you racist and telling you to go back to where you came from

            • +1

              @SpainKing: I hope he/she’s just trolling here…

I doubt that the Libs are this far gone, yet.

        • Enjoy the tennis.

      • +8

        With you there Gervais.
I still have a major beef with the Romans. How dare Emperor Claudius' men help them selves to my great great great great great grandfathers land in 43 AD. Oh and don't get me started about the Normans…
        I want compo!

      • Because of that our whole lineage has had a mild iron deficiency.

That should be the least of your worries.

The land was literally sold under Batmans Treaty, under absolutely no duress, but go off.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman%27s_Treaty

Things took a turn a bit down the road, sure.

        • "The validity of the treaty has been widely disputed. It is possible that the marks which Batman claimed were the signatures of the eight Wurundjeri elders were instead made by one of the five Aboriginal men he had brought with him from Parramatta, since they resemble marks commonly used by Aboriginal people from that area. Furthermore, since neither Batman, the Sydney Aboriginal men or the Wurundjeri men spoke anything approaching the same language, it is almost certain that the elders did not understand the treaty, instead probably perceiving it as part of the series of gift exchanges which had taken place over the previous few days amounting to a tanderrum ceremony which allows temporary access to and use of the land. In any case, the European system of understanding property was entirely alien to almost all Aboriginal peoples"

          • +3

@timmyd: Anythings possible when you're happy to literally invent shit to suit your preferred version of events. I am Spartacus.

the European system of understanding property was entirely alien to almost all Aboriginal peoples

Said peoples literally went to war over land rights, regularly, oh and liked to shove a spear through your leg for stealing, but go off.

      • $10 wouldn’t hurt when you invaded and occupied the whole land, right?

        • +2

Who invaded ? not me .you mean an additional $10.

    • +8

In the pre-hearing to the Mabo case, the agreed position by both legal teams was that Australia was 'settled' land.
      Not invaded or stolen.
      Settled land.

    • The land was literally sold under Batmans Treaty, under absolutely no duress, but go off.

  • +93

I think this should be marked as "targeted"

    • +5

      Oooooo damn

    • +4

You have a very handsome avatar.

    • +8

Exclusion list would be longer than JB when they have a sale!

    • +1

      They are always targeted

      • @uberiscool no need for that

        • -3

I meant it genuinely, in an unfair way

          • +3

@UberIsCool: lol, upvoted you coz I thought you were only kidding.

Anyways mate, almost every group ever has been wronged in some capacity.
Let’s try to move on and get along with each other, aye?

    • +2

Back to where? England? Germany? Italy? Greece? China? Brazil? Ireland? India?

        • +1

I think you will find that it is a combination of freehold, trusts and Crown land, which is ultimately owned by King Charles 3rd.

        • +1

Seriously do you really believe your verbal diarrhoea? If so, you should just leave Australia and be done.

      • +2

That's a great iteanrry though, except i'd keep Ireland just after UK, and start with brazil to save on flights.

    • @abs898 what is wrong with you?

      • -1

It's was targetted towards people who say that. I honestly don't support it.

        Aboriginals are the land owners

  • +10

I understand what the AO organisers/marketers are trying todo but it hasn’t been executed well.

    • What are they trying to do?

  • +12

If you were born here, you are Indigenous.

Seems like they don't want foreigners at the Tennis this year.

    • +6

Well the DH up top wanted to kick out anyone who boos Djokovic….

Does he realise people have been hating him for a decade now?

Hope they evict half a crowd…. That'll be awkward.

      • +2

Hope they evict half a crowd…. That'll be awkward.

        Both of them ???

    • +2

Yeah, nah, it doesn't work that way - just like arbitrarily stating things doesn't make you an authority in the matter.

      • +2

        just like arbitrarily stating things

look it up in the dictionary.

        • Indigenous

          Why did you capitalise it?

            • @jv: Just above, in this very chain:

If you were born here, you are Indigenous.

Seems like they don't want foreigners at the Tennis this year.

              • +3

@bargainpersona: That's terrible. I'll order a new keyboard right Away.

                • -4

                  @jv: Pathetic.

                  • +4

                    @bargainpersona: Agree, it hasn't even lasted 2 years…

Maybe I can find one for $10 off?

                    • +2

@jv: I got a JB $10 voucher if you need one

  • +2

Heck yeah! $10 off a day pass. Sounds good. Thanks OP.

  • +14

'I'm indigenous as far as I'm concerned because I was born in this country' -Pauline Hanson-

    • -1

That’s the problem right there. Not acknowledging the past!

  • +3

Tennis Australia boss Craig Tiley says the introduction of First Nations Day at the Australian Open is about making the event accessible for all Australians.

Ground passes at Melbourne Park on Wednesday will be $10 cheaper for Indigenous Australians.

“We want to provide an opportunity for every Australian to get on the precinct and come to the event,” Tiley said on 3AW Mornings.

    https://www.3aw.com.au/craig-tiley-explains-new-first-nation…

    • +2

So how does the likes of Craig Tiley get in then?

      • +2

        Pays full price

    • +24

In a roundabout way he just called Indigenous Australians poor.

      • Lol just had that same thought

      • +6

the soft bigotry of low expectations.

      • +6

        White saviour complex is real

    • +13

Making the event accessible for all Australians but discounts only for Indigenous Australians.

      Makes perfect sense

    • +11

So then he'll be making ticket prices cheaper for everyone?
Or maybe introduce a sliding pricing scale based on income?
Or will he just woke virtue signal by racist pricing without regard to ability to pay?

  • +7
    • +3

You sir are a living god

      $10 off for all!

    • From that link, we can see that this deal stacks with concession discounts.

  • So for reference how much is a ground pass?

    • $59 against $49

  • +4

How are they going to prove this?

    • +15

You have to convincingly sing the chorus to Treaty by Yothu Yindi.

      "Nhima Djatpangarri nhima walangwalang -
      Nhe Djatpayatpa nhima gaya nhe-
      Matjini…. Yakarray - nhe Djat'pa nhe walang - Gumurrtijararrk Gutjuk - "
