Not a bad price for the specs considering the form factor

    • +6

Yeah was looking for something that was 14" and easy to carry… Lots of options at 15.6" which tends to get big and heavy…. Very few options at 14"!

    • +12

Ive got a 3 year old acer with the same form factor. Has been humming along nicely… No complaints!

    • +5

I went from a Dell XPS to this. Sure build quality is a bit more plasticky than the Dell, but it survived a 3 week holiday across Japan and Taiwan with no issues. I used to be someone who looked down on Acer too, but overall performance, usability and reliability has been impressive. Especially considering the price point.

      • +2

Agree that build is a bit plasticky, but also totally agree that overall performance, usability and reliability is very impressive. I've personally had a positive experience!

    • +2

I've owned two Acer laptops over the years - one through the mid-2000s and the other through most of the 2010s - both withstood much abuse. Sure, not Macbook quality, but I'll be damned if they didn't punch above their weight.

  • What is Shi….

    Wait.. Shipping haha

    • +1

Sorry … Not a frequent poster. 'pping' got cut off coz of word limit in the title (i think). Hopefully fixed now!

  • I guess not a bad price. There's been a real lack of deals since the $999 3060 laptops at HN l6 months ago.

  • +4

Got this laptop from HN at last year's Black Friday sale for around the same price. Very happy with it so far. Has been holding it's own well with general duties, photoshop and some light Full HD video editing. Reasonably quiet, doesn't get hot, good battery life, full HDMI. USB PD has been very handy. Just wish they added another USB-C instead of two USB-A

    • +1

I've got an inspiron and I'm in the same camp on additional USBC ports

    • What type of battery life? 8 hours or more?

      • Depends what you are doing. I have comfortably gotten 6+ hours from general web browsing and Office apps.

        • Thanks.

  • +2

I just cant go acer. Burned once.

    • Yep, same here.

  • Does this allow you to charge via USB-C?

    • +1

Yes. 65W. Battery life is excellent too! Game changer for travel.

      • +1

Mine pulls ~80w sometimes, it can do over 65w

  • +3

$50 off for signing up to news letter

    A$948.10 delivered

    • Can't see that option. How did you sign-up?

      • +6

In a pop up window. I got this code but not sure how many times it can be used.

        D3HWWHO7F0CO

        • +1

This worked, I got a code to but it wasnt valid for some reason

          Cheers mate!

    • Where do you put code in I signed up got code for 5% extra off can't see where to enter it

      • I got neither ☹️

      • Before proceed to checkout, there is a box that says Apply discount code.

    • +1

      Mine arrived today, feels solid.

      Thanks OP for sharing.

    • how long you take to receive the sign up newsletter discount code? I am still waiting ㅜㅜ

      • ”how long you take to receive the sign up newsletter discount code?”

It took a while. Also, very strangely, the code won’t work if 1) you are signed into your Acer account 2) you click to sign in after using the code (the discount will be removed).
So I had to make sure I was signed out. Then use the code as a guest, then enter delivery address, payment etc. all as a guest - not a registered user.

59WHR Battery with 5700u, is going to give you great mobile battery life, but you need to disable the gtx GPU when you are using word or chrome on battery!

    • +4

Shouldn't it do that anyway ?

    • I thought that’s auto when in battery mode? My old dell was like that.

    • It auto switches when you're not using 3D stuff, easily 8-12 hours battery life with default settings

I disabled the dGPU and could still game on integrated with 4-6 hours battery life

  • +1

Thoughts on this for gaming new titles? Going to struggle?

    • +2

Should be fine on low and medium settings. It's not really designed for full on gaming, it just accidentally has a GPU.

    • +4

It's a 1060 3gb equivalent (assuming running at 50w tdp that the mobile 1650 are usually maxed out at). So 40fps low 1080p in cyber punk and spider man. Fsr can take it to 60fps pretty easily.

If you don't mind it, the price is good, considering the form factor. You can probably get a fat gaming laptop with a 3050 for a bit more though.

  • Soldered ram?

  • +1

    OzB'd in 3… 2… 1…

    • They've been this price twice before at Harvey Norman, isn't that impressive

  • Those that own this laptop, what's the battery life like?

    • Acer Site says 11hours so I’d hope 7-8hours but maybe I am hoping to much.

  • -2

    No rj45

I’ve had mixed results with Acer.

I’ve got one laptop that has been flawless for 5 years, my latest Acer broke after 1 1/2. After 25 back and forth emails to Acer support to organise a repair, I ended up cancelling the ticket, scrapping the laptop for parts and upgrading my old laptop.

Threw the new one in the bin. Case in point - expect Acer support to do everything they can do to make your experience difficult so they can avoid their ACCC consumer guarantee requirements. This is just my opinion.

Things like instead of asking all their required questions in one email, they will ask for each detail in an individual email taking weeks.

    • What broke on it? Was it a cheapy like this?

  • Would this be the best around for under $1200 or so for a 14inch device?

Is this the same device https://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Swift-X-SFX14-with-GTX-16… ? (Got the link via a Harvey Norm post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/739252

    • That notebookcheck link is Ryzen 5, this is Ryzen 7 - so better processor I think ?

The ozb link looks like the same machine though!

    • +1

It's the lightest around, maybe not the best. If weight isn't an issue you can get better on other deals but they'll weigh 1.8kg+ if it's anything like a 3060

      These are only 1.39kg

  • I don’t think anyone would price match that kind of profit loss with no rebate from the manufacturer so not surprising they didn’t do it.

  • -3

No deal. Maybe if it was the 1660.

    • +4

But what other 14inch laptop has similar specs for $950?

  • +1

I had an acer and one of the keys popped out of the keyboard I contacted acer inside the warranty period but they said keypad is not covered under warranty.

  • Would this be a good laptop for a casual gamer? I only play dota 2, starcraft and overwatch 2

    • +1

Yes, for those specific games and those of a similar performance demand. Remember that it is a 60Hz screen.

  • Is the RAM upgradable? Looking for upgradable RAM

    • just buy more ram off the internet

      • +1

But how can I install is ram is not upgradable @tuesdayweekday

    • +1

RAM is not upgradable in this laptop

  • I would wait and probably buy something with 4 series gpu. I heard they do something with ai to put frames in to get radically improved frame rates in supported games.

    • It's called DLSS3, and reports are that it's good but not suitable for every game. Also even the cheapest laptops with 4 series will be starting at $1k US so don't expect it at this price point any time soon.

  • Just bought the Intel NUC 15.6" last night for $1049 on eBay 🤦🏾

    • What’s the specs? Is it i5 (non touchscreen) or i7 (with touchscreen) with 12th generation Intel CPU? Please let me know. Thanks.

    • +1

      cancel / return it

  • Is there any extended warranty option?

    • +1

Its 15.6" .. so not as portable. Specs are good though!

    • Just be a bit careful with that one. It was posted on here a couple of weeks back. It's the "P" series CPU which is a lower performance chip (the "H" series intel chips are the best), and a strange combo for a dedicated GPU.

    • Worse screen as well. The laptop in the OP's deal is much better value.

  • -7

This is a medicore deal, unsure as to all the upvotes
    Acer = generally Bad
SwiftX = slightly better than generally bad
    1650 why?
    Wait for a better deal.

    • +3

high bar for expectations? are you after cheaper price or better specs?

    • +6

      Ryzen 7-5700U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, GeForce GTX 1650, 1.4Kg $998

The upvotes are because you can't get anything else at these specs for this price.

      Wait for a better deal.

LOL good luck waiting for another 1.4Kg machine with dedicated graphics and 16GB/512GB for under a grand.

    • +3

Is this claim based on your personal experience? The spec looks pretty decent at least on paper.

    • +4

It’s $950, what’s better for this price please.

    • +3

I don't think I've seen a better deal on Ozbargain with this sort of specs on such a small form factor under one grand, especially with a decent 100% SRGB screen, 2x m2 slots, USB C Gen 2 PD/ Display, full metal body, and 11-hour battery life. LOL at some people's expectations…

      • +4

It is not metal body .. plastic with a metallic look i think!

        • I think it might be aluminium actually. The laptop has got a heft to it.

  • I'm pretty sure this is a stupid question. Is it possible to turn off the GPU to increase battery life?

  • -1

I don't need this, have a HP Aero that can do basic gaming well enough with the R5 5600U, not big on the 8GB soldered RAM though..

16GB RAM and the dedicated graphics is appealing, also the 100% SRGB screen..

  • I will be buying a laptop with these sort of specs sometime this year but in no rush to buy, should I go for this one or would I be better off waiting until a better deal comes up?

    • +1

A better deal won’t come around in a hurry, less than $1k, pretty light weight, good minimums for SSD and RAM these days, dedicated GPU, 100% SRGB, backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader.. main downside to some people is the brand, otherwise no major downsides.

    • +1

I assume there’s a newer model coming out but it will be RRP heading to $2000 and not $950.

I have been looking for a while for Dell and Lenovo but with both the screens have been very poor (low brightness, poor colours) and no GPU.

  • +3

It might not be the best laptop around but based on the price and specs it’s one of the best deal at the moment. People say it’s not a good deal but they can’t point out a better deal or anything similar.

  • +2

I bought one and just used the code above D3HWWHO7F0CO for my $50 discount. I was happy with my Swift 3 which I sold a few weeks back so happy to give this one a shot

  • My order was out for delivery today but I wasn’t home :(

    • So pick it up at depot instead?

    • Did you get tracking information from Acer?
I ordered mine yesterday and haven't had any follow-up emails.

      • No follow up email or tracking, just the driver rocking up and calling me he was at my door.
Only got tracking by calling Air Road and request for redelivery… so coming today hopefully.

        • Just had the exact same experience!

  • Does anyone know if it has another SSD slot? Just looking though the specs, honestly it doesn't worry me that much. I'll replace it for a 1TB anyways.
