    is 64gb enough for anything?

    • +31

Please consider your own gaming preferences before purchasing.

      MicroSD expansion available.
The next model up is an extra $250. You could buy a 1TB 2230 NVME for around $150 and upgrade it yourself.

    • You really need to replace an SSD yourself in order to just use that, even iPhones don't come with 64GB config nowadays.
Should not be too hard but need to take care of the power consumption of the SSD you choose, an SSD with high power consumption can damage this machine.

    • +4

I have 256 but actually ended up running everything off sd card lol

    • +1

I have the 64GB version with a microSD card - save all games to the SD card and it is fine, also make sure the system is not set to update games whilst you are in game as this slows things down.

I’d consider 256GB at that price point though, not going to admit how much I spent on the 64GB model before they became more readily available in Australia..

    • -8

512GB is barely enough for me on my phone.

64GB will be nothing for gaming especially for modern games. Off memory COD Modern Ware ware 2 is like a 70GB game

Even my Switch console has used 70% of my 512 GB SD Card

      • +3

do you have one? cos i do and it's running games fine

      • -1

That might be relevant if you used it for listening to music on the go, filming and sorting videos and photos, or watching stuff, which I don’t plan on doing.

        • Huh? Games, the steam decks primary function, are way larger than music and photos. They're usually bigger in size than videos too.

          • -1

@Orion au: I capture some things in 4K, take some photos in raw, and download some music in hi-res. That fills things up pretty quickly.

Similarly, games have 4k cut scenes, textures and audio clips. That’s why some them are so large.

Do you think they write tens of gigabytes of code?

            • @Bedgrub: Sorry, perhaps I wasnt very clear. I'm struggling to make sense of your post.

SpeedRunnerLink's point was, in response to someone asking is 64gb enough, that 64gb won't be enough for modern games, underlined by the fact his phone at 512gb is "barely enough" for uses that generally (yes I understand hi res, uncompressed files can be large) aren't as size heavy as modern games.

You said in response to that, "That might be relevant if you used it for listening to music on the go, filming and sorting videos and photos, or watching stuff, which I don’t plan on doing."

Using the Deck for these functions? It's only relevant if he decides to do these things, but not if he's just gaming? Despite the fact games can be very large? I just wasn't following the thought process, and still find it hard.

      • I'm not sure why this comment has been down voted so much. 64gb is a small amount considering the size of modern games. It can be negated by the micro SD card slot, but the fact remains 64gb isn't much for a gaming device.

        • That’s because the deficiency it can be negated by the use of micro SD card, as you said

          • -1

@Bedgrub: Hardly a need to downvote him when he was responding to someone asking 'is 64gb enough for anything?'

    • +1

fine for emu. not big enough for harry pothead

      • 512GB SD cards are cheap as

        • +1

Depends on what the boss says. I was hoping to get a tb card but too exxy

    • I have a 64gb model but also ordered a 1tb ssd from AliExpress. Thought I could wait until the ssd arrived but couldn't; have bought a 256gb microsd to tide me over.

    • Throw in 512gb SD card, been doing that for WoW the last couple of months. Need to switch over to the Sabrent Rocket but CBF it's working well atm. Don't play anything else.

  • +8

By the time Valve pulls their finger out, we'll all have one already lol

  • +1

Anyone on the fence…. just get it. Only caveat is it doesnt run well docked, e.g. AAA games will look or run good on the TV.

Any size is fine. I got 512 but if i could choose again i might get the 64gb. Can always upgrade ssd yourself if you feel the 1tb microsd is not enough

    • What’s the issue with docking? Poor performance, or just not the full 4k gaming experience that one might want to see on a larger screen?

      • I would like to know that too

      • +2

Its a handheld that plays well in 720p, 800p gaming for AAA titles with a mix of low to high settings depending on the game. You blow that up on a big screen, even with upscaling it looks quite bad.
Although it is way better in fidelity than a switch. E.g. doom eternal and witcher

I have been playing exclusively handheld, if i want to play on the big screen i play on my ps5 or hook up my pc

        • Although it is way better in fidelity than a switch. E.g. doom eternal and witcher

          what you mean by fidelity?

          • @pinkybrain: Sharper/Better/Higher def looking image

            • @paradoxez: are they both 720p?

Why the steamdeck one looks sharper?

it because it use the pc graphics textures vs switch (redone texture for switch)?

      • I couldnt find much info on this prior to buying, and thought that it would be compatible to a switch (meaning it can run docked and handheld pretty much the same), but sad to say its not. The power usage remains the same whether docked or handheld which means that it does not get an extra performance docked. Some of the newer AAA games already require a "low" setting in handheld to run smoothly, so if you blow that up onto a TV it just doesn't run great, it's just doesn't have enough power to handle it. I'm sure easier-to-handle games (indie's, emulators etc) will do fine docked, though I haven't personally tested those, I've only tried to run Days Gone and Elden Ring on the TV.

    • Speaking of which, is there a dock purchasable in Aus at all or is it just all the third party products at the moment.

Would a simple USB-C to HDMI cable do the job too?

      • There are plenty of 3rd party docks available on amazon/ebay..

Thanks op, got one! Been waiting for a deal, almost pulled the trigger the other day at $800. Can't wait!

  • +3

    Thanks Op.

This is my second time buying one, lets hope this one actually gets shipped and arrives.
    (Don't deal with VChain AU)

    • +3

      Oh damn tell us more?
Heaps of people bought via vchain on kogan

      • +5

I bought through the actual VChain AU store, not through Kogan (My mistake).

Bought on the 24th of Feb, got an email saying they would send an email with tracking once payment is cleared.

Kind of forgot about it and about over 2 weeks later I realised I hadn't heard anything from them yet, checked my paypal and banking and payment was cleared 1/2 days after I ordered, sent an email to them asking for an update.

They said there was some BS issue that they are unsure of, I gathered that they just took my money, and the product never shipped in the first place as there was no tracking.

I requested them to send another unit, as on the store it was still showing they had stock (At this point the price was $60 higher than when I originally ordered).

They declined and processed a refund. I asked if they could give me a personal voucher so I can process another order for the original price I paid for it at the time, no reply.

        • ah totally not what i expected , thought it was going to be a drama with warranty. but turns out they didnt even supply? wild.
imagine how much of a **** around warranty claim is going to be if required.. far out.

    • +1

Curious to know what happened with your order? I got mine from vchain kogan and havent had any problems. Although it did take close to 3 and a half weeks metro sydney to get it

      • Hey mate, just left a reply to the other comment on what happened.

  • +14

Still personally waiting for an actual release in Australia, not particularly keen on grey imports.

    • +9

      enjoy the wait

      • +12

        Happy too lol

      • +1

What I'm waiting for is the steam deck 2

        • +3

The devs already said it will be a few years (probably 3 or 4) before we see a steam deck 2

          • @ozbagends: Where?

          • @ozbagends: That's not entirely true. They were referring to major performance changes such as a better iGPU.

Gabe already hinted they looking into a revised model with better battery life.

        • +1

It's only been a few months since it's come off the queue you had to wait to buy, it's gonna be at least 2-3 years (if not more since consoles generally last for 5+ years) for a steam deck 2.

  • +1

What is this? Some kind of gaming console like nintendo switch?

    • +5

1min Video, that will tell you the basics!

    • +7

PC in a console form factor running Linux with compatibility layer for many games including more recent AAA titles.

    • portable wii u

    • No mate.

This isn't one that you can play sitting in your hall way.

  • +2

I bought the 512gb version when they were first released in the US and I've just bought a 2tb drive to do the upgrade. The steam deck is amazing and I'm looking forward to the extra room. For my purposes, it was worth the extra cost for the upgraded glass, but if you like the idea of portable gaming and can afford it, buy this and upgrade the ssd (or don't) and you'll be happy you did.

  • +7

Long weekend and a steam deck.. Everything is coming up Milhouse in Melbourne.. Thanks for the find and post.

  • I got 64GB version from the US and upgraded to 512GB with no issues. It was a fairly straightforward process. Now tempted to upgrade to 1TB

  • +2

Jeez remember when the 256gb model was $855 like 2 months ago?

    • +2

Yeah, disappointed I didn't pull the trigger on the 64GB when it was $650

      • Damn I didn't know it hit that price point and kicking myself for missing out

    • even kogan (not a marketplace seller via kogan) had it at 899 for a very short window

  • +1

What about the better/anti-glare screen on the 512gb though? I get it's an extra $370… but you can consider that as $270 for the screen and $100 for the storage, which isn't toooo awful.

    • +4

$270 is a lot of money for a screen. You could achieve a similar effect with an anti-glare screen protector.

For $370 you could get a 1TB nvme, a 1TB microSD and a screen protector.

    • +3

but you can consider that as $270 for the screen and $100 for the storage

Replacement 512GB model screen is ~$165 shipped.

      https://australia.ifixit.com/products/steam-deck-512gb-scree…

      • +1

That's great. Didn't know ifixit were shipping spares to Australia

      • +3

        https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Steam+Deck+Screen+Replacement/1…

Not going through that process is worth $105.

        • +2

Looks easier than I expected to be honest. Valve clearly put a lot of thought into user serviceability.

I wouldn't bother though as the 512GB screen is known to be problematic (touch issues) when you put a screen protector on it.

It's much cheaper to just slap an etched anti-glare screen protector on the 64/256GB models.

          • @HomeAlone: I didn't know it has touch issues.

I'd still be wary of emc, I've only heard horror stories of emc failures being too common.

    • +3

The anti glare screen helps a little if gaming outdoors. You could achieve the same effect with an anti glare screen protector on the 64gb model. Personally i went with the 64, bought a 1tb sabrent rocket and 1tb ssd to upgrade it

    • Depends if you’re going to play during the high sun times like on public transport… or maybe have a sun room I guess

    • +1

I haven’t seen a 64gb or 256gb Steam Deck in person but compared to my Switch the 512gb Steam Deck’s anti-glare screen is amazing. I hardly need to worry about reflections on the Steam Deck whereas on my Switch reflections are really annoying and basically constant. With the Switch, light reflecting off my face means I can easily see my reflection (moreso in dark scenes) but on Steam Deck there’s no issue. The anti-glare screen is basically like insurance, allowing you to play anywhere and anytime you like (except probably outside on a very sunny day) and not have to worry too much about reflections.

It’s well worth it IMO, and the Steam Deck is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever purchased.

  • Looking to purchase, as I'll be travelling overseas next month. Anyone able to help on what the tax invoice is like with Sydney mobiles, as I'll look to claim the tax back via TRS. Thanks.

    • Have you done this before? I'd love to know more.

How does it work if you got the 256GB or 512GB versions costing over $900 and bring those back into Australia? Or if you just get the 64GB version at $745 but you bring back other overseas purchases tipping you over $900? (assuming they've flagged your name/passport on your way out of Australia for making the GST/TRS claim, with their system alerting customs of your return within a reasonably short time frame)

      • Depends on how many people you're travelling with. I've claimed more than $900 worth before, but I was travelling with family so you can pool your allowances together. Never had a problem when returning either and never been pulled up on it. Just depends on your situatuon.

  • Oh boy, told myself I’d buy this if it dropped back to 740. Buuut managed to pick up a Miyoo Mini+ today… so maybe I can wait til steam deck 2

    • +1

I have a switch and a full catalogue library up to ps1 on rg351mp, and I still got an sd and almost exclusively play sd lol

  • I like steam and I do have a massive steam library of games don't get my wrong but I also have a massive switch game collection. Don't know if I got one of these that I would actually use it lol I hardly use the switch.

    • +4

Ive kinda stopped playing my switch ever since I got the SD lol. But the switch is still the best coop couch console when you have people over to play 2-4 player games. If its just single player its SD all the way!

  • -1

Quest 2 is same price as Steam Deck in US, and is about 630$ here as compared to about $750 for the Steam Deck. Recommend holding off from buying it until either Valve releases it here or import prices reach the same price as Quest 2.

    • +2

That's if they ever release it here.

It took the Index just over two years to be released in Aus. If the trend continues then it'll be 2024 before we see a local version.

    • I got a Steam Deck for $650 delivered from Jack Deal last month, so it drops in price.
