  • Anyone know if you can buy sim packs with giftcards ?
    Specifically the Vanilla giftcards
[ the ones currently 10% off]

    TIA

    • +1

      Generally No

    • +1

I think if they are Visa/MasterCard prepaid cards, it should be okay as long as you select Payment as Card rather than Gift Card.

      • @zrmx

Might just give it a go 😉

Coles has 20% off vouchers till cob tomorrow
        If all else fails…

        [ Coles Mobile]

      • Worked fine

        Said acceptance with signature :)

    • -1

No you can't. I tried to use this at Kmart and it didn't work.

      • Was it because you got an error message on the EFTPOS terminal (Invalid Product Mix), or because the staff did not accept your signature, or something else?

        • I went to the self check out at kmart. Yeah it came up with an error message saying invalid pin or something along those lines. I just assumed it was because somewhere in the T&C that you couldnt use the cards at Coles.

So I assume by extension that kmart fell under that umbrella :(

          • +1

            @Mr Joker:

an error message saying invalid pin or something along those lines

If you entered random numbers (0000) on the PIN prompt and then pressed Enter, you would get an error message, because you attempted PIN verification on a card that does not support PIN verification.

The only verification supported by Vanilla Visa gift cards is signature verification. I am not sure if Kmart permits signature verification, but to initiate it, on the PIN prompt screen, press Enter without entering anything else and see what happens. If the EFTPOS terminal is doing nothing when this happens, it probably means that Kmart does not support signature verification, which means Vanilla Visa gift cards are not redeemable at Kmart… at least for the purchases where a PIN is requested.

Each merchant has a threshold where they will attempt payment from a card swiped through the magstripe reader without asking for a PIN or signature, but it varies wildly. For example:

            • Coles seems to set their threshold around $35.
            • Woolworths and BIG W seem to set their threshold around $1 or $2.
            • Kathmandu seems to have no threshold, which means that even a payment for $0.01 will trigger a PIN prompt screen.

I do not shop often enough at Kmart to know where the threshold sits, but it could be around $35, considering Kmart uses a similar payment system to Coles. You could try to do split payments to turn a $120 purchase into 4x $30 purchases (as an example), but Kmart does not allow split payments at any checkouts if you are purchasing a gift card (and who else what other type of purchases at Kmart would have this restriction).

I just assumed it was because somewhere in the T&C you couldnt use the cards at Coles.

You cannot use Vanilla Visa gift cards as a payment method for any gift cards at Coles.1 That is written in the T&Cs for the current Vanilla Visa gift card deal.

There is nothing stopping you in the deal T&Cs from using a Vanilla Visa gift card to pay for your groceries at Coles (as an example). If your payment amount is less than the PIN threshold for magstripe payments, you can swipe a Vanilla Visa gift card and Coles' payment system will attempt payment without asking for a PIN or signature. If you are above the threshold, you will be asked to provide a signature and it is up to the staff member whether they want to accept or decline your signature… and that is why I do not use Vanilla Visa gift cards at Coles unless I am under the signature threshold. You are entirely at the mercy of a staff member, and if you get a particularly strict staff member who does not like signature verification or prepaid gift cards (or both), they could decline the signature for any reason they see fit and you basically have no recourse.

I think you should be fine using a Vanilla Visa gift card to purchase a SIM card at Coles, but if you are above the threshold, you will be at the mercy of the staff member who helps you.

            1. The T&Cs actually say any other gift card at Coles, but I think Coles really intended to say any gift card at Coles

I breezed thru Coles Self serve
        Not Kmart
So dont be rude and say you can't.

Can these receive SMS when traveling overseas?

Does these do VOLTE like Boost? With Boost, when overseas I can call any Australian number when connected to WiFi.

    • +2

Can these receive SMS when traveling overseas?

      Yes

Does these do VOLTE like Boost

      Yes

      Does these do VOWifi

      Yes

With Boost, when overseas I can call any Australian number when connected to WiFi.

Not sure if that would work with Coles or not but yes Coles mobile does have both VoWifi, and VoLTE

      • Last time I checked, only VoWifi on the Telstra network would function while overseas. I would not expect Coles (Optus) to be able to connect when I’m abroad.

        • Yes that's my experience in Australia only, and overseas sms receiving info from their website

      • Do you need to activate roaming to be able to receive SMS?
Recently amaysim (optus) remove their PAYG roaming plan, I thought Coles mobile does the same.

  • +1

Horrible connection, despite changing to Volte on request to customer care

    • +7

Telstra is worse where I live so I guess it depends on your location.

  • wonder if these will ever drop to $99 again

    • +2

I think you're referring to the 60GB plan.

      • +1
        • Technically that is the 60gb plan with price drop down to $99 and double data deal.

          • +1

@CodeXD: true but also last year they did do $99 for the 120gb

            • @Irishness: Yep, I am on this plan now :)
Still gives you 120GB for $99, so a better deal for those that don't need more data than this (hopefully that deal will be back soon).
Although I will warn others, Coles Mobile customer service is a shocker, it took them 9 days to port my number because they were having "system issues" and if you take a look on Product Review, this is quite common (wish that I had read this before buying).
As long as you don't need to contact them, you'll be fine.

    • Wait till the Black friday ?

till then enjoy Boost mobile sim slutting with Cashrewards, along with Lyca mobile $1 sim

      • they did the deal I think twice last year, need something similar for 2nd number later in April will keep an eye out

    • Find a Coles Group employee who you know and they’ll get you one for $94.05 with their staff promo/discount.

      • thanks

      • price showing $119 with 5% staff discount

        • The $99 + 5% was a special promotion so that may have expired.

  • Really good value. I jumped onboard during the last deal, but the Optus network is significantly worse than Telstra for me. I am not too happy about it. I guess it really depends on your location.

    • Agreed, come in woolies match for your 12 month sims

    • Pretty much same price as Kogan (voda), just Optus

  • Apart from rolling over unused data, what do Coles give you as incentive when 12 months is up?
Do they charge $150 for 2nd year meaning you have to port out and port back in again?

    • +3

Turn off auto renew. They offer 20% off for recharges

  • Hows the service within Melbourne?

    • +1

Been with them for 2 or so years now
      Very response on chat
Service is great, had no issue (Live St Kilda East and work in CBD)
20% off renewal as long as U turn off auto renewal on app

      It's cheap as chips too

      • +1

Thanks just turned off auto renew!

      • How does the "20% off renewal as long as U turn off auto renewal on app" work?

        • +1

They contact you around a month or so before renewal with the offer. It then allows you to select which plan you'd like when you renew

  • Where is esim

  • Is this 4G or 5G enabled?

    • no 5G with this, atleast not in Melbourne CBD

  • no Taiwan :(

  • This deal is almost permanent, at least they keep extending it month after month

Do not buy Coles Mobile… been testing it out this year with other providers (Telstra, Boost & Amaysim) and can't wait to dump this Coles sim… not the most reliable as calls randomly disconnect every 10/30/60mins on the dot… like the old dodgy Lyca Mobile service… Amaysim has the best call quality followed by Boost, Coles is just a contender for the price alone… you get what you pay for…

    • No problem with mine… Boost has worse reception than Coles in my area. As many people said, it really depends on your area.

      • -2

Yes it might work well for a minority… but miles apart from Amaysim or Boost…

        • But amaysim is on the same network.

          • @hollykryten: yes, but not all MVNOs are the same… Amaysim offers 5G, eSim and a lot more carrier capacity…

    • -1

Strange that you find Amaysim better - aren't both Amaysim and Coles mobile using the same Optus network?

      • yes, but not all MVNOs are the same… Amaysim offers 5G, eSim and a lot more carrier capacity…

  • -1

I usually buy the Coles Mobile 60GB $99 when it's on sale for my childrens tablets.
Useful when we go on holidays/camping.

  • can this be used for re-charge?

    • No.

    • +1

20 % off recharges for coles mobile till cob Tue 28th March…if that is any help.

  • +1

Coles should give 10% off monthly shop like Woolies..

  • I am unable to turn on call waiting for coles…

    • Conference call and call waiting both work fine.

      • How did you get conference call working? Was it recently as in the past, I used to get a message indicating that I don’t have sufficient credit for this feature and looked like the feature wasn’t available on Coles Mobile.

        • I have an AU stock Oppo Find X3 Pro and both features just work. I tested with two other phones a few days ago.
