Great watch , the alpine band is very comfortable I tried the 3, I surf in mine and it’s very secure too.

  • +7

price match with Apple can make 15% off GC works.

  • Has anyone tried using these Apple watches on Android phones?
This looks like a really nice watch, but unfortunately, I am on Android ecosystem.
The Android offerings seems really behind compared to this Apple watch.

    • +8

Won’t work, time to switch to an iPhone

    • +4

You won’t be able to even set it up without an iPhone, unfortunately.

      • -1

You can, if you know someone with an iPhone. They same way you setup a watch for a kid, or an elderly family member.

      • wow, talking about locking in.

    • Android is far better….. The other day I just tried to download a ringtone to a iPhone and had no way of downloading the attachment from email to my phone - that's right, you have to purchase the ringtone through iTunes. Lol classic apple rip off, and the suckers keep going back.

      • +5

You can do it (I’ve done it before), but it’s not particularly straightforward.

        • +1

Yep that's my whole issue…… They virtually make it impossible, just like the switch from apple to Android. But once you've broken from the handcuffs you never look back. Trying to convince my mum to do the same thing but when they're tied into the ecosystem it makes it hard.

@Lets Make Sandwiches: More dragons please.

          • +2

@Lets Make Sandwiches: Yeah fair enough.

I’m still going apple phones, but minimising my reliance - eg. Cloud stuff is already through Google. One day I’ll change over 🤣

          • +2

@Lets Make Sandwiches: Having boomer parents myself with iPhone/iPad, know way they would handle Android, let her be and keep things simple for her.

            • +8

@Surfsalot: Being an android person for over a decade, a programmer, not a boomer, having windows mobile and palm before that, I want nothing more than to have a great phone that just works. I wish I switched to iPhone earlier.

            • @Surfsalot: iOS is "simpler" because of much less functionality :( like Mini Morris functionality with BMW price)
Every time people ask me to help with iPhones I'm frustrated with the lack of expected Galaxy Note-level functionality (S23U now, I'm in IT & had smartphones since 2001).

      • +28

Who uses ringtones it’s 2023 lol

        • +1

          A grandmother!

        • +7

Who calls their friends in 2023 lol

          • +2

@starspawn: See I don't get this. The tik tok generation has lost all ability to communicate in real life. You can get through so much more content on a phone call and it's good for breaking up your drive to work.

        • Everyone likes my very loud singing bird ringtone (it's natural not annoying & increased the volume long time ago via PC) that I carry on (via mSD or copy) on all phones so far.
iPhone is like - very fast but cannot change lanes on highway, or turn corners safely - limitations :(

      • +1

Why on earth are you changing a ringtone???? It’s not 2001 rofl. Even on android for over a decade I never. changed the ringtone haha. Have you set yours to something custom?

        • +3

Did it for my mum. She's a boomer.

        • +1

Some of us talk to other people.

          • +3

@TheRealCJ: Most of us do. That has nothing to do with the question onlinepred asked though.

        • 1989 called, they want their "rofl" back.

In all seriousness though, it can be handy not to use a default when working with large groups of people that all might choose a similar tone. I can understand how it's probably generational given how messaging is the main communication method now.

          • @depecid: This post is for an Apple Watch. Why do you need ringtones when your watch is buzzing like mad. Also there are nearly 35 ringtones on iPhone, easy enough to change it. Also nearly 13 alert tones… I'm sure you can use one of those if you choose to have your phone and watch buzzing and making noises.

            • +1

@onlinepred: My reply wasn't about the Apple Watch, it was against your generalization that because it isn't 2001 and you are happy with the default ringtones that no one should change them as it's passé.

              • @depecid: I meant more setting custom ringtones. I just use what the phone has. In 2001 I was entering custom ringtones into the phone, and then later people would download songs to use as ringtones. It was the worst man.

      • +10

can't remember the last time I have my phone not on silent.

        • +5

Surely this is a tiktok generation thing….. I couldn't believe the other day when I heard that young people don't pick up phone calls but then text back? Like wtf?

          • @Lets Make Sandwiches: Probably cause most are scammers if not in contacts. Surely your mother can find one ringtone they like, no one’s iTunes anymore either lol.

          • +3

@Lets Make Sandwiches: I don’t pickup phone calls. It’s mostly spam. If it’s important enough they will email or leave a voice.

          • +1

@Lets Make Sandwiches: I'm middle aged and I do this. If I know who's calling then I answer, but otherwise it can go to voicemail. If it's actually important then they can leave a message. It's incredibly rare that anyone actually leaves a message - which just confirms that most of them are spam.

I also have my phone on DND and set to reject numbers with callerID hidden. It will still ring for important contacts, but the rest just vibrate my (cheap) smart watch and I look at it and ignore it.

          • @Lets Make Sandwiches: Agree… my assumption is they have notifications for everything and thus the phone would be going off constantly. I only have my phone on silent when i go to bed… my one or two text messages and 10 or so emails a day doesn't bother me or anyone else.

      • Wow 2012 called /s

      • +1

My friend, go on youtube and teach yourself how to download the music file on Garageband and add it to your ringtones list. Shouldn't take that long…

        • Garageband on PC? I will never install clumsy Apple S/W on PC from past experience.

      • I always have similar problems. Using a USB/USBC thumb drive has become common practice at my work. Android windows etc can plug it into their mobile transfer whatever they need. The iPhones don't seem to be able to just plug a usb into it (with adaptor) and use it like normal. I guess it might be a selling point for a future phone in many years.

        • +1

even iphone14PM only has usb2.0 speed. those are indeed downsides of iphone.
but with that said, i use syncthings to manage all sync files across all my devices, wirelessly, (at almost 80MB/s). i am pretty sure that is good enough and way more convenient than plug things….

yep iPhone has downside, just like android has downsides as well. point is: denying the entire brand is the most stupid thing a person can say in 2023(not saying you said it, its some comments above).

      • yeah, back then iOS really sucks, you cant even copy stuff. even nowadays change ringtone is still kinda hassle. but i am fine with default ringtone.

    • Very complicated to do. The cellular can be linked to an old iPhone you keep at home. I wouldn't bother

    • Although I prefer Android phones over iOS, unfortunately the Android watches are round instead of square/rectangular like the Apple Watch which is what I prefer.

      • If round computer displays made sense, all of our monitors would be round 😏

    • -1

Apple TV, Apple Watch, Sidecar and more ensures Android is eons and eons behind.

Android has emulators, porn apps as penance.

  • +6

Too expensive for what it offers

    • -1

Don’t look at luxury watch brands haha.

    • +2

Considering the features… and what other smart watches around that price can offer I don't think its too expensive.

    • +1

I agree, my $2800 iPhone 14 Pro Max already tells the time just fine :/

  • aerospace-grade case? Righto, will go well paired with a bagain space ship to be posted on OzB.

    • +2

I hate these descriptions, just like “medical grade”. I work in the medical industry, and most tools are actually disposable.
Aerospace aluminium actually consists of over 10 possible alloys, that it doesn’t mean much by itself. Also, this can defeat the purpose of finding an alloy that would actually be more appropriate to being in a watch.

I know Apple is strong in marketing, and I do own many Apple products, but I do find this term always frustrating.

  • holy….that price tag… even more expensive than my phone worth, what can this do my phone can’t?

    • +3

      It’s a watch? 🤷🏻

    • Surf, mine got a 3ft barell this morning.

      • +7

        Username checks out.

      • The Samsung watch5 can do that for half the price.

        • +2

Galaxy’s are a good android phone, sure, if not the best android watch. But they aren’t there against an Apple Watch.
Garmin would be a good alternative for the more athletic types. Battery lasts longer too.

        • -1

          Your dreamin

    • It's 4x what my phone cost.

  • +2

Pretty steep for something that has a very limited lifecycle

    • Why a limited life cycle?

  • +12

Very expensive for something that will obsolete in 2-3 years

    • Lol don’t think so

      • What if apple decide to, so generously, limit its performance “to save battery”?

        • Battery is easy 2 days plus now, I only need 1, pretty sure will be along time to get to 1 day.

          • @Surfsalot: If you use it daily, the battery only lasts 2-3 years. Guess what, apple doesn’t actually have a battery replacement option for Apple Watch last I checked. Though I have been offered to replace it with a “new” watch of the same series….

        • +1

Would be more subtle than flicking a killswitch and making them explode instead…

    • -1

Apple watch updates are almost as long as the iPhones

    • +1

Still using my series 4 after 4.5 years with no plans to upgrade anytime soon.

      • +1

same with my W4, just got a W7 recently purely due to a good seller, otherwise more than happy keep using the W4. 85% battery, use it daily, jobsites as well. love it.

      • I have a S5 and I, probably, won’t upgrade until the iOS updates run out.

  • +1

I sort've dig this. Shame no go with android

  • +1

    Damn $1200 for a smartwatch.

    • +5

      That's not very smart.

    • +1

Goes well with the other $15K of Apple gear in our house 😀

      • +1

Rookie numbers, REAL clout chasers spend $80,000 on a fully decked out Mac Pro

        https://www.apple.com/au/shop/buy-mac/mac-pro/rack#

        • +1

Yeah doesn’t take much to rack up $15k lol. I refuse to buy iPhone at retail, buy new or near new for big discounts 3-6 months after release.

        • Looks like a high yield investment computer, if you ask me.

          • +2

@sw00p: Well you’re in luck, I’ve got a bridge you can invest in.

It even has a sign labelled “Yield”

      • -3

while there's Sheep there will be Shearers ;)

    • It's not just a smartwatch. If a smartwatch is all you're looking for you don't need this watch. This is a high end model and its pricing is relatively fine.

    • That's what I thought too, until I saw how clunky the competition is — https://www.garmin.com/en-AU/c/wearables-smartwatches/?serie…

  • Literally a bargain at full price. $1499 AUD is my prediction for next release.

    • +4

That’s not how bargains work lol

      • +1

That's how inflation and a dollar in the toilet works.

        • Inflation doesn’t make the REGULAR retail price, cheaper than usual.

You could argue that it’s worth the money but that doesn’t make it a bargain

    • +2

People who overuse the word literally.
