  • store in title pls

Also for the money wouldn’t the art 35 1.4 (when on sale) be the go, unless gunning for a full set bonus…

    • well, definitely worth if targeting specific domain/application e.g. astrophotography but it comes with cons like long focus breath and slower auto focus compared to this

      • +2

I bought the sigma 35/1.2 for like $1100 during an amazing sale and have absolutely loved it

        • 1100 is a bargain. but just too heavy for me :)

  • Is price match considered as Negotiated deals (phone/email/chat).?

    • I tried already in chat - pop ups if you go to Sony page

      • +2

        From Cashrewards:

Cashback is ineligible on the following:
        Negotiated deals (phone/email/chat).

      • I was wondering the same thing, did you get the confirmation of the tracked cashback after price matching?

  • -2

This is a pretty mediocre lens, it’s only advantage is good autofocus.

Edge sharpness ain’t great. Bokeh is uninspiring. No 3D pop.

    • the price is kinda close to Nikon 35mm F1.8S, which actually has every single Nikon know-how packed into it.

and i've seen people actually complaining about Nikon F1.8 primes being exy. Don't see Sony fanboys complaining about Sony lenses at all lol.

    • +3

It's definitely better than mediocre. I will admit corner sharpness could be better but center sharpness in pin. Bokeh is too subjective to comment on.

Dustin Abbott's review is thorough and fair.

I think it's actually an excellent lens for the price, light and unobtrusive and produces great results.

      • had a look at the gallery, that bokeh is REALLY unpleasant. Too busy and messy.

        • Maybe that's more being F1.8 rather than f1.4

          • @Shadowsfury: lol, if it had good bokeh it will still be pleasant to look at, even at F1.8.

35mm is barely considered "wide angle" for full frame cameras.

If used on a crop sensor (a6000 series etc) this would be a portrait lens

    • +1

Agree. Id consider wide angle 12-24

      • +3

        nah that's Ultra Wide.

    • 35mm is definitely wider than it is tele. It is my favourite focal length, only because the systems that i'm on don't make 40mm that i like.

that said, a quirky 37mm or 38mm lens might be really good….. a bit more reach than 35mm but still decently wide enough.

    • I agree. Camera companies need to reclassify their definition of wide angle. One might buy this lens thinking it's "wide angle" will be good for travel vlogging (doing selfie or interior shots), and it's simply not wide enough.

The wide angle term should be used for 20-30mm and 'ultra' wide for 20mm and below.

      • If you could operate a camera and use it to create content, you 100% would have basic understanding focal length. Secondly it depends on what you're after, artistically speaking. not everyone is a big fan of having like a 0.1mm fish eye lens that capture the entire universe and beyond… that unfortunately is the norm. People are literally slapping the widest possible lens on their camera and call it vLoG

I'll get the 24mm GM, one of the best value prime lens. around $1350 after cashback and cashrewards for now. By using the crop mode on a7R, I can achieve a 35mm equivalent focal length and still maintain sufficient pixels.

    • From Cashrewards:

Cashback is ineligible on the following:
      Negotiated deals (phone/email/chat)

      • Is this a new clause? I have bought a few things in the past with Sony price match and they were tracked by Cashrewards

        • It only appeared a couple of days ago. I raised it in the a7iii deal 2 days ago. I think it won't be honoured.

      • It was fine with pricematching last year. We may still can go to shopback for 8%. Or wait for the time that can stack pricematch + cashback + Amex deal + TRS.

    • good man… using in the exact scenario. Especially A7RV @61MP, cropping to 35mm is easy as with no discernible difference due to high pixels.
That 24mm GM is a sweet spot with high MP camera

      • nice 24-35mm lens, i see.

        • can crop up to 50mm i guess, 35gm+50gm saved

  • -1

Since when 35mm lens is wide-angle?

  • +2

This lens is more for videography.

Compared to the 35mm f1.4 GM, you get more bang for your buck.

  • +1

More of a comment on this focal length rather than the product quality, but I am so glad I have a 35mm (got the Samyang) now that I'm a parent and it's often hard to get enough distance to use a 50mm.

  • i thought this was a coffee ground tamper deal from thumbnail. disappointed

    • I can sell you one coffee tamper for $859

      • i'm sure if you put a pretty label on it people will buy..

  • +3

This has been in the $700 range multiple times in the past couple of years. Even as low as 600 at one point before 2022.

  • Thanks for everyone's comment.
Based on the history, this lens not worthing at this price point and better to wait for around 100-150 bucks less; like: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/661984
I think worth looking at price match for 24mm f1.4 GM - posting the deal now

    • cheers mate

      response from CashRewards:

I am afraid if you have price matched your Sony transaction then this would fall under negotiated deals and your transaction will most likely be declined for cashback.

      • Seems the negotiated deals clause has been removed from the Sony Cashrewards page? Also it is 14% cashback right now

        • Yes, I went with below deal personally.
