Might be a dumb question, but what's the benefit of buying lifetime access over just using the DNS? Are there more features?

    • +6

using DNS will only block domains, the app will add cosmetic blocking of elements in pages as well

you can achieve much the same thing with uBlock Origin (browser addon), using subscription lists inbuilt, but usually requiring manually adding your own filters

  • +2

Newbie here, I'm currently using dns.adguard.com as a private DNS on my phone and it's working well, not seeing any ads. Not paying any money for it either

How is this paid service different?

Is it any better than Adguard Home (I got that in my GL inet router)

        • +1

Adguard home is just self-hosted DNS server. not much different from their public DNS, but you can add your custom filters. It still can't filter elements within the page so the app might have some advantages.

    • Same, on phone:
network and internet - private DNS -
      dns.adguard.com

and origin on chrome plus opt out plugins.

      Good enough and free

    • +1

I’m thinking of signing up partially for the features, but also to support them for the work. I’ve used the free AdGuard app on my phone for years, it does great blocking in Safari and I never see any ads. The app itself has no ads. I don’t use the DNS though. But yeah for the price, I’m happy to chuck them a few coin and support them.

      • Yeah that's fair and good of you .
Wonder if it blocks the ads in the promotions tab in Gmail mobile (android)?
There are 2 or 3 ads all the time but sometimes getting big ads which are bloody annoyying.

        • It doesn't block Gmail ads

    • I've found this app blocks most in app ads that my DNS filters never caught

  • I have a question: I have received lots of spams sent to my gmail address (and calls to my phone). How not to receive them?

    • +28

Stop writing your email & phone# on dunny walls promising a good time.

      • This is really hard for some people to understand - everything they do, has consequences. In case of Internet, perpetual.

        • +23

In case of toilet wall, poopetual.

      • +1

Thanks for letting us know your past experience

      • +1

I never did that (providing email and phone number to untrusted sources)

        • +7

Unfortunately in today's cyber landscape, data breaches are all too common. We trust lots of companies with our personal data. Think Optus, Medibank, Service NSW… The list goes on. Many of these entities have your email and/or mobile on their systems, along with other details. If they get compromised, as those listed above have, this information usually gets stolen and then leaked or sold online to malicious actors.

To answer your question above - Your best bet is marking spam emails as spam and using mobile SMS/phone apps that have inbuilt spam detection, such as Google Messages. And most of all, be aware of such things and be cyber safe. :)

    • +1

I use Google's "Phone" & "Message by Google" apps which filters spam message & calls automatically.

    • +3

There is no way to stop receiving emails. You can however focus on organising your inbox sorting process better.

You can always search and filter all the emails by labels.

  • Thanks good timing just installed for a trial recently and it's great

  • +4

    Better than ABP?

  • Blokada is free but I believe they have recently moved to subscription service as well for their new release.

I have been using Adguard and can vouch for it

    • +3

You can still download the old blokada 5 from the blokada website. Also still gets updated.

      • I'm still using Blokada 4 (downloadable from Github) which I find uses much less battery than Blokada 5. I found 5 a bit unstable too (lost internet connectivity which was resolved by restarting the Blokada service).

  • +3

There are so many great free ones, why pay for this?

  • -1

Where you get international free fee card?

    • Amex
      28 degrees Global etc etc
      Google can help

      • +3

        Amex isn’t international fee free?

  • Been using this for over 7 years now at 50 a pop back then, still using it today and it's been great on both ios and Android

  • +1

Does it block ads in games?

    • +1

      Yes it does.

    • +3

If the ads earn you credit, you might miss out, though.

  • I get spammed with ads on Facebook videos. Will this stop the ads?

    • +1

This will stop ads. Especially on manga sites which are 50% ads and even ozbargain. My only issue with this is it also blocks google sponsored adverts (sponsored products you are searching for) cashrewards, shopback and game ads that reward you when you watch them so I constantly turn it off and on. This also helps if you have kids bec some sites sneak R18 ads and this blocks them.

      • Brave browser + Crunchyroll / 9anime

      • Especially on manga sites which are 50% ads

Just use Mangadex, 0 ads, community hosted, full quality images since they're uploaded directly by the scanlators themselves.

Anime sites otoh are a wild west though. However I've used 9anime+ublock origin with 0 issues.

    • +1

On Android on the Facebook app - no.
Apparently if the app uses certificate pinning and https it can't intercept the traffic to block it
      Unsure about iPhone

  • +2

It'll block cashrewards and shopback too

    • +1

Whitelist the apps in adguard app.

      • Thanks - how do you do that? I've added them to the "Edit allowlist" but it still gives me a warning it might not track (!). Am paranoid my purchase won't track

        • +4

I'd always just temporarily disable it to be safe during the purchase

        • +1

In aguard, under apps search for cashrewards for example then click on 3 dots on top right. Select app management. Then unselect route traffic through adguard. I've successfully claimed my rewards several time through cashrewards app like this.

  • +1

Does this function through VPN ? (As this blocks Android auto wireless unless you turn it off).

    • +3

You can whitelist android auto in the app and you don't have to turn it off every time. I'm using it from about 2 years without any issues.

      • Thanks will try that

  • +1

Do I have to redeem code on all devices within 30 days?

    • +7

Don't think it needs to be done on all the devices within 30 days but just need to activate the license. I purchased a license then created an account on the AdGuard site to bind the license to that account. Then had to install the application on one device to activate the license but can now manage device licenses using my AdGuard account going forward.

      • Doing that now, ty!

  • +5

FYI: The “normal” price of the individual lifetime subscription is US$19.99 not US$59.99. Stacksocial is just inflating the price to make it look like a better deal than it is.

US$11 is still a discount, just not 81% off.

  • Been using this on my android phone since 2017 , I find it useful.

  • I currently use the free version of AdGuard DNS and love it. Does this lifetime sub remove the limitations of the free DNS or is that a completely separate product?

    • +1

Replying to my own comment in case anyone else is curious. It looks like this is separate from AdGuard DNS but replaces it and allows more flexibility around whitelisting sites/apps.

  • +2

Is adguard a safe option when configuring advanced ad blocking on Android? I understand that you need to install a certificate on your device that intercepts all traffic, including financial information.

  • +1

    This or pihole?

    • wouldn't pihole only works device located locally?
Unless off course you have tailscale and use your home pihole as the exit node

  • doesnt ublock origin do it better?

    • This is systemwide across all apps not just in the browser

  • +1

Interested in this, although I'd be eager to know how this compares to a free service like Adblock Plus (or an equivalent service).

if I was to proceed, would anyone want to go halves or 3-ways on a family service? $7.86 (3-ways = 3 devices each), or $11.80 each (Halves = 4 devices each, not sure what would happen with the extra one but can work that out)

  • -4

You could've mentioned this was a Russian based company…

  • +1

I am just a newbie, is it possible to block ads on facebook app ( specially the ones in videos) and on youtube ?
If yes, whats the process ? ( Free one probably)

    thank you

  • Been using this for 6 or 7 years now, highly recommend.

Just added a 9 device license to my AdGuard account from here (other lifetime license is for only 4 devices). Thanks for posting.

    • can you share the link for 9 devices, and what is the cost?

      • +1

It's in the main deal… The Family license.

  • When I use this one, I cant use my nordvpn

    • I have used nordvpn with adguard without issues

  • How is it different(the advantage) from using free version of adgaurd for Android?
    https://adguard.com/en/adguard-android/overview.html

This thing slowed down my internet so much i uninstalled it

    • So do vpns

      • Yeah, but i didn't enable the vpn option, nor do i use one. So what exactly is your point?
Seriously though i don't know why i'm getting negged - if you want to try using it and are happy to have slow internet go for it.
I'm just letting you know it was taking about 20 seconds to load a page, uninstalled and back to instant load times.
Apparently it is quite well known for causing slowness.

        • It's worked okay for me, gets a little stuck sometimes (maybe a couple times a week), so maybe it just didn't work very well on your phone for some reason

  • Can this subscription help in removing ads from YouTube & Facebook video ads?

    • If your using a PC, just get something like ublock origin for your web browser over paying for this. If its a mobile device may be some value here, but can't comment on its abilities as have never used it personally. I assume it would block ads regardless of the app (on devices that its installed on ofc)

  • +1

i used adblocker addon in my browser but these days seem like every website is using some kind of plugins that detects it and asking to disable those addons…will this be help for those?

  • I have been using this from Oct 2021, I am pretty satisfied. I paid $89.99 for a lifetime license back then. I would recommend it at this price because it just worked as expected.

  • How do you change the payment to Antartica?

      • Lol, I'm just following the suggestion done by OP to bypass the additional unnecessary tax

        • Guess can't claim on tax anyway if it's not an Aus tax invoice (not that you actually need one for <$300.

          • @G-rig: Of course you can.

            • @FutureTech: Technically you can't (but that wouldn't stop me)
Probably won't bother anyway dns.adguard.com works fine and uBlock Origin on the PC :).
Saving $16 is the OzB way..

    • +2

Don't checkout using Paypal (they share your real address), use a credit card, enter your real card details and just pick Country US, and a state with no sales tax, like Oregon, and pick a zip code.

  • I bought it, thanks OP!

One thing, if you are using Google phone and Google Advanced protection program; AdGuard is using a non-approved apk file, thus you would need to disable Google Advanced protection program first (I have just done this by removing the Advanced Protection Program, install the apk, re-enable it. Hopefully no issue moving forward…time will tell)

    • Makes sense, AdGuard probably blocks some of Google’s ads. They try to put up conspicuous roadblocks to software like this, since they’re an ad company.

I bought it and have it going on my phone. Haven’t tested it much yet. Wondering if I should switch from uBlock Origin to this on my PC. UBO works really well.

    • Google phone and Google Advanced protection program

Hey mate, is this worth enabling? Popped up a while ago but I may have deferred it.
I use uBlock Origin on Chrome (PC) and manual DNS in the settings on the phone (which i disable for cash rewards etc).

      • +1

        is this worth enabling?

The Google Advanced Protection Program? Definitely! if you care about your Google Account.

With the Adguard lifetime subscription that I just joined, I turn on/off whenever I use CashRewards/ShopBack.

        • Ok will have a look, seems like they send you a USB or two. 2 step authentication has been fine and usually good enough. Cheers

          • +1

            @G-rig: All the best!

FYI, I use yubico key for the key

Also, while you are it, setup Google inactive account manager too, in case of passing and your family member needs to access your account

            • @BigLeviathan: Geez those yubico keys are at least US$50??
Sounded like Google may provide one (or would be nice if they did!)

  • Thanks OP I got it for my iOS devices, works for most things except the ads that are hardcoded into youtube and facebook etc

  • I couldn’t get it to work outside of safari. Been using the free version on my IPad for a few months and it works fine for everything in Safari. I bought the lifetime license, binded it to my AdGuard account, however it made no difference. I toggled the DNS on but don’t know what else to try. Am still seeing ads in apps such as Outlook, calculator, weather, 7 plus etc.

    • yeah I haven't tried in awhile, but I tried to set my parents up with adguard on iOS it was rubbish.
      on android it's great.

  • Happy PiHole User here :) if you want to save yourself some dollars

    • +1

How do you make pihole works on your device outside your home network? Using vpn/tailscale with your home network as the exit node?
