Well I do like that there is a GTX 1080 in it

  • Showing 256ssd in link and 8 gig ram?

    • +1

      Fixed sorry.

  • +4

Pretty stupid that a GTX 1080 was released in 2016 but if it were still sold brand new today it would probably be worth $300+

    • +16

$300+ for the 1080 is actually uncommon now. The ebay listings are a little over the place, but I've noticed quite a few auctions ending at $200 or less. Which is still not very good value.

For the folks looking to buy a budget gaming card, the Radeon 5700 XT is probably the most under-appreciated and under-rated second hand offering, with auctions ending typically around $200~$240.
It actually outperforms the bandwidth-starved RTX 3060

      • +4

I picked up a 5700xt which performs the same as a 6600xt the other week for $160 delivered from ebay

      • +3

For context, the RX 5700 XT is ~GTX 1080 Ti performance. The RTX 3060 on the other hand, being just above a GTX 1080 in raster.

      • +3

I meant the brand new retail price of a 1080 would be $300+

  • Won't run Win 11 but good for Linux. Or Win 10 for another year or so. Not sure whether that GTX card is supported but it might be worth checking as a Plex Transcoder.

    • +11

If you're doing it yourself, just turn off the TPM etc requirements when installing windows 11.

      • Will you still get the updates though? This is missing the TPM and one Generation less than the Gen 8 that MS require. I'm looking at Gen 8 iCore and up on all my refurb boxes those this would be great is with was just 1 iCore newer.

        • +2

Yeah all updates etc are fine.

It's a simple registry update. Easy to do, but just a bit techy.

          • +13

@incipient: You can create an ISO install stick with Rufus that skips the compatibility check by selecting a checkbox, nothing tech involved any more.

            • +1

@mskeggs: Oh true. I forgot about that. Much easier way to go haha. The recent Rufus updates has a bunch of nifty stuff to preconfigure Windows!

        • I'd be very surprised if it didn't have a tpm chip in it as most corporate PCs from the last 10 years do. CPU compatibility
          Might be an issue tho.

    • +3

Doesn’t it come with Win installed?

      • +1

The description says Win 11 but does say Home or Pro. I'd expect Pro. But I'm also surprised to see Win 11 on an iCore 7 machine.

        • +1

All the seller has to do is set the two bypass registry keys in their Win 11 install media, just like you would.

        • +3

          7Core i

    • +3

it literally says it comes with win 11

  • +2

My nephew has been wanting a PC, would this do for playing Fortnite and similar games at moderate settings?

    • +2

Yeah it would, but I'd get something a little bit more up to date even though it will cost more money.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/788989

      • I was looking at that but their budget is around $600 max for the PC, I think he’ll be happy with it for a while. Thanks for the reply.

        • +11

If the budget is $600 then absolutely save a little more and go for the machine in the link - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/788989

This machine in this deal is really really old - it's terrible value in comparison. As soon as a new game becomes popular that it can't play, you'll have to throw it away and you'll be on the hook for $600 again.
Buy something more modern with some life left in it - you're getting way more value for your $$$.

          • +1

@Nom: There's not a single game out there that the 1080 cannot play just fine. Especially at its intended resolution of 1080/1440p. You may need to turn settings down here and there for some more recent graphics heavy games, but it gets the job done. I've just only upgraded from it this year.

      • I assume that means this will also run Minecraft as well then?

        • +1

          Yes, easily

Unless we're talking RTX Minecraft lol

    • +1

Yes, you would get at least 60fps on 1080p, 1440p or 4k on high resolution with these specs

    • +2

Will do fine for that, Fortnite is listed as "recommended: GTX960" for graphics which is a generation older and 2 steps down in the range

      • My son plays fortnite on a 1080 and it hits about 100 fps in dx11 mode medium settings.

A 1080 is really not ideal for fortnite anymore.

Dx12 mode it struggles and stutters around 40fps.

    • I dont think this is great value, and will need replacement in a couple of years. That said, if you need a keyboard mouse etc your a ways of a new PC.

NB Battlebit remastered will run super well within system guide and its insane fun.

      • NB Battlebit remastered will run super well within system guide and its insane fun.

tbf Battlebit runs on practically anything, tried running it on my absolute potato of a laptop and can easily get a playable 25-40FPS in most scenarios

  • +1

Thanks OP!! Perfect timing. Got one.

  • What power supply is it using? Assume it isn't the original one with a 1080 in there.

    • +2

I bought the later model (i7 8700) - RTX 2080 and it had a 500W OEM Gold Power Supply- if that helps

  • +5

Conveniently missing from the description: "Units have some heavy scratch to case or missing rubber feet.". Regardless, they consider this "Refurbished - Grade A".

    • Grade C at best if the exteriors (profanity)

    • Grade A for acceptable

    • +3

Idk, scratches on a case are pretty much a who cares for me since it's purely cosmetic, especially for a thing you'll stuff under your desk. If it were scratches on a screen I'd say grade A wouldn't suit it but this is relatively minor.

    • +1

Yeah, after my last two experiences with them, I've gone off "refurbished". Last one, didn't work properly, refurbisher stopped responding to emails, then eventually refunded after I threated to go to PayPal. Previous one, worked perfectly, but the mounting screws attaching it to the stand it needed to be used on to keep cool had been overtightened and cross threaded, refurbisher claimed not to have done or checked that.

  • -2

    Yeah nahh

  • Can this run/fit two graphics cards?

    • Doubtful, the PSU and motherboard on OEM PCs are usually spec'd to within 10% of their max power budget as configured. Anything more and you'll start popcorning and/or tempting magic smoke escape.

  • -1

Can we remove the graphics card? I need virtual hosts. How much the gfx card go for on scum tree/fleabay?!

  • @Calmago any chance of a discount on this beast? ;)
    https://www.australiancomputertraders.com.au/dell-precision-…

    • Sandy Bridge 2C4T CPU and Maxwell GPU, what would you want it for?

      • As many cores and ram as possible for dev vms

        • The description is generic and not what that server has

        • +1

If you want many cores+ram slots for 'cheap' you can find lots of threadripper 1950x (16 cores+support for 1tb ram) on ebay+mobo for 600 altogether.

If you want lots of cores but don't need more than 128gb ram then you can just get a new 5950x (16 cores, 80% faster than a 1950x).

          • @JerraJones: Thanks Jerra, will look into it.

            • @Ozschmargain: AliExpress is a good source of cheap ex-corporate Xeon CPUs if you were looking to build something yourself too. For example US$42.52 would get you an Intel E5-2699 V3 with 18 cores and 36 threads. Probably cheaper from other sellers.

Obviously newer CPUs with less cores have faster clock speeds.

        • Consider rack-mount servers which go cheap on disposals. They are too loud for home use though, you need to keep them in the garage or something.

  • Thoughts on upgrading to this from my 982 year old HP N54L Micro Server being used as a Plex server?

    • probably overkill, if you've been surviving thus far :-)
Your current CPU (according to a search an AMD Turion™ II Model Neo N54L – dual-core 2.2GHz) has a Passmark score of 844.
For a 7700K that is 9659, more than 11x as much.
It could do a lot more than just serve as your Plex server, with such a powerful CPU (relatively), and it can accommodate for a lot more RAM as well.
And then there's the GPU… it's still capable of decent gaming on 1080p, so it's total overkill for a Plex server.
If you're just not interested in having such a strong GPU (onboard video will probably suffice) you can probably flog it for at least $200 somewhere, or make someone else happy with it.
Or look at other deals, plenty of server deals going around on ebay; if you like a lot of RAM, https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/204339832267?hash=item2f939a65cb…

  • I'd like to see more of this kinda deal / in this range. Don't often see this price range.

  • Really decent if it got a 1080 inside. Tho I doubt if the 1080 can survive long…

    • +2

      It survived thus far!

  • GTX 1080 is pretty old now and you would question its lifespan as well as the model provided. Dual fan? Temperatures? Noise? etc.

  • +1

My old (current) pc is basically these specs… I think it's time to buy a new one…

  • +1

Interesting machine. The main difference is that this is the tower model not SFF, so you can upgrade it more easily, use full height cards and get a better power supply. The GPU is also nice, much better what we usually see around here. Good seller too.

  • +1

Shame only 4 core CPU. GPU is only worth ~$200 so is the PC on it's own worth $300? I'm not so sure…

  • photos on the site seem to have no GPU.

can we get a photo of the actual unit on sale?

    I'm trying to confirm what
    "…. 2 DisplayPort™….1 choice of 1 HDMI; 1 DisplayPort™; 1 VGA…. "
    in the specs actually means.

  • For occasional gaming would you get this or a newish ~$700 85w laptop with 3050?

…or a steam deck for a wee bit more?

    • +2

I think the laptop will give you better bang for buck long-term since you'll get RTX cores and DLSS… Anyone feel free to tell me I'm wrong though.

Source: I'm still using a 1080 in my rig. 😭

    • +1

Neither - if you want to do basic gaming then just buy a cheap basic gaming machine like https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/788989

      • Is that on the basis of the GPU or the fast that it’s more current (making future updates easier)?

        • +1

Would be based on the CPU and it being current.

On the $699 PC the mobo is crap and the GPU is worse than this one.

          • @coxymla: Thanks - I’ve been keyed into the Intel release cycles, but the AMD models numbers are Greek to me so I have no how old anything is based on the model numbers.

        • It's more current - when you want to play games that it can no longer handle, it's only a new video card away from being just fine again for another few years.
Generally the newer the machine, the longer it's lifespan for your $$$ 👌

  • Any confirmation on whether Windows 11 Home or Professional?

  • +4

It is cheaper $467 for ebay plus in their ebay website: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/204406331290

  • I've got a 6600xt I've since upgraded from, I'm assuming this wouldn't accommodate a card of that size? Has anyone tried putting a newer gpu into these?
