  • What's the difference between 7060 SFF and 5060 SFF?

    • +2

      https://www.hardware-corner.net/guides/difference-optiplex-3…
I have read 7060 is higher model than 5060 :)

      • On the untech website, the 5060 can be configured to have 32 GB ram, but the 7060 is only listed with 16 GB ram…

      • 3060 would be different but 5060 and 7060 don't have much difference except for an extra serial and PS/2 port

        slow clap well done

  • Any chance of a similar price for the HP Prodesk G4 i5 8500?
    https://www.untech.com.au/products/hp-prodesk-600-g4-sff-i5-…

    • Curious why you prefer the HP?

      • +2

Looking to build up a Blue Iris machine. Both would probably work fine and are very similar, but I've read its easier to fit 2x 3.5" hard drives in the HP then the Dell, by removing the DVD drive. Both officially only fit 1x 3.5" hard drive.

        • I see, good to know, thanks for that!

        • +1

Keep in mind there's prodesk and elitedesk verisons of the HP machines. The EliteDesk 800 can take 2x 3.5" drives and the prodesk 800 take 1x3.5" drive according to specs

          • +1

@60beetle60: Also prodesk has 2 X dimms and one nvme n.2 slot, and elitedesk 4 X dimms with two nvme m.2 slots.

I have both, the elitedesk doing esxi NAS (RDM passthrough) plus Plex (630 HD passthrough for HW transcoding) and other serving duties, whilst the prodesk is a desktop PC for light gaming.

Can do. Will get it live in few hours

This is a GREAT package IMO.

With these SFF machines, the devil is in the detail. This one is the 7060 and it is the top model compared to the 5060 and 3060. E.G. the 3060 has a lesser chipset and only 2 RAM slots. 7060 vs 5060 is more subtle, I believe the 7060 has more ports like serial and PS/2. But it's the 3060 that I would avoid IMO, it has lesser PCIe slots as well.

It has one16x PCIe slot and another one that is 4x but open ended, so you can also install a longer card here although it will run with only 4x lanes. 8th gen CPU means you get 6 Cores with an i5 and Windows 11 compatibility.

    • +4

Off topic. Love your YouTube channel. Takes me back to my school days.

  • Can you add a 3.5" HDD to these cases? I get the impression the answer is no.

I was tossing up getting Blue Iris and while the SSD is good, I would need more storage so the SSD plus a spinning HDD would be better.

    • Sure. the SFF models fit one 3.5", or 2x2.5", as well as an m2 slot.

      • So it would come with a 2.5" SSD, meaning you would need to swap that out for an M.2. Luckily I have a spare of that.

Now I need to research whether the i5 8500 will be good enough for Blue Iris - especially if I put it in ProxMox.

        • +1

It's easily good enough for Blueiris, depending on camera count. Finding it harder and harder to recommend Blueiris nowdays though with their subscription based pricing when there's options like Frigate available now.

          • @Yekul: Frigate looks good, but they advise not to use it in Proxmox. I was planning to use this box to run the NVR along with Home Assistant in Proxmox, so that might be a no go.

The recent issues with Blue Iris losing its server has not made me confident about the BI path.

    • I dont know for sure that all the Dell SFF cases can fit a 3.5" HDD, but all the ones I've opened can.

      • whereabouts at checkout can we leave the note, can't see any options?

        • send us an email or leave a message in chat box

          • @untech: Thanks, I've ordered and sent an email :)

Generally, how long is shipping to WA?

  • not a bad deal, can chuck a RTX a2000 small profile in it and turn it into a capable gaming machine

    • +2

Is it possible to get these at a remotely decent price? Feels like it’s be cheaper to get a used 3050 gaming laptop instead

      • Around March this year, alot of miners were selling these for just under $400 which was ok price. The popularity caught up really fast and now 2nd hand ones are $550

It's the best card available for a SFF build, but you're paying $550 for a 2nd hand card that gives 3060 performance

    • how many gb would you get?

    • +1

Is this worth it? The cheapest I can see is $549, so plus $235 = $784 - that doesn't seem so cheap.
Would I be better buying a gaming PC deal here?
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/788989
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/789412

I'm thinking for now I just stick with my Optiplex 9020 i7 4790 with GTX 1650 LP and upgrade when I actually start using it again with Quest 3

      • No its not worth it. But SFF builds are aimed for people that want a silent machine and takes up less space

  • +1

Good deal. Not in the market for one currently, but Would be helpful to note if the 16gb ram is in 1 stick or 2x8gb

    • +1

Doesn't the 7060 have four populatable RAM slots? Ie., it could even be 4 x 4Gb…

  • Not a bad price with decent specs

  • how would this fair running minecraft?

    • +1

Should be great, just don't expect fancy graphics mods

  • From what I can tell this isn't a 8500T model CPU so it won't be as energy efficient as if it was ( which is one of the main reasons to buy these if that is something you look for )

    • Aren't the T models the lower voltage, lower performance models?

      • -1

Yes. I have a 7060 Micro with T CPU, it's more than adquate for general office tasks. This 7060 SFF has a bigger case and more powerful CPU.

    • +2

I don't think they are more energy efficient. AFAIK they have a lower power profile, meaning they will clock less high under full load. But when sitting idle or doing simple tasks, I don't think there will be much of a difference.

Energy efficient is more a it consumes less power but it also gets less work done. You can go into BIOS and disable turbo boost if you want something that is consistently slower / energy efficient.

  • Hi Rep,

Great price and specs - best deal yet on the powerful bang for buck that is the Optiplex 7060. Do you know what config the RAM is?

    • +3

2 x 8GB, give us a message or add a note and we can fullfill accordingly

      • Many thanks. Sorry for the follow-up, but regarding your earlier comment about including a 3.5" caddy on request, can you confirm whether the standard units come with an Optical drive or not? My limited research indicated the 7060 could have either an Optical drive or a 3.5"…

          • @untech: Awesome. Just ordered a couple. As Carlos Sanchez would say, "muchos gratzis, muchacho…"

  • Any of these kind of refurb PC can take full size graphic card?

    • +1

SFF can only take low profile (LP) card. these are usually kind of expensive and not that powerful.

      • I know just asking any other full size refurb PC that can take full size graphic card and full size PSU?

        • The full size elitedesk etc. will take a full size GPU, but you're probably better off on facebook marketplace and just buying someone's old gaming rig with a better PSU etc.

        • +1

Just buy a gaming pc on the cheap. Most of these will require new psu too, I just don’t think it’s worth it at all. I'd rather a cpu that is not at it's limits the whole time, and have a lower temp which will save electricity over time.

  • +1

i paid $230 for same spec one of these a few months ago - great price, great machine for day to day office/browsing/music + sport & youtube viewing dula monitor setup…with piece of mind that it is W11 compatible into the future.

just go for it if you are on the fence, wont be disappointed

  • I need something that can output to 3 monitors 🤔

    • You can try to find a second hand lp graphics cards that has 3 outputs.

That's the reason why the gt 710 was still being sold/bundled by retailers a few years ago, way past its life span

    • Do the monitors support daisy chaining?

      • Eek not sure

        2x S3221QS
        1x S2721QS

        ?

  • Any possibility of a no HDD included option? I want to add m2 so this would be a waste.

  • Will this be quick to boot and snappy with basic office stuff?
Use is downloading stuff, office and maybe plex. Sounds like a good deal but don't know much about this…

    • +1

The SSD will make it run great, and the amount of ram will make it still feel snappy when you ahve a bunch of office things open at the same time

      • Thanks.
From what I read it should be capable of running a local plex or jellyfin server as well.
Looking forward to playing around with it.

        • +2

Perfect for plex. Many forums online highlighting the i5 8500-based SFF Optiplex 7060 as being optimum mix of form factor, sclability, power usage and processing grunt for serving plex or any basic NAS functions.

Finally somewhere to stick my 18tb Ironwolf pro from www.ozbargain.com.au/node/769555

    • +2

Yes, the IPC / single core performance is improved over let's say an older 4th generation i5. Make sure you have M.2 NVME and dual channel memory for best performance.

Be realistic with expectations, the latest generations of CPUs have made big improvements with being "snappy". Although there are some news appearing that the 12th generation CPUs have gone backwards in this aspect.

But in terms of value it seems that the 8th generation CPUs are the sweetspot with an i5-8500. Anything newer and you will pay a large premium for not much gain. But go with something older and you will get 2 less cores and other steps backwards.

  • +1

any chance you're going to get more Lenovo t480s touch laptops?

  • is optiplex 9020 the best one ever?

  • Would this be good for running proxmox for web servers/docker images?

  • +5

Just a thought for anyone - like me - who grabbed one of these for use as a NAS, plex server or to house a new 3.5" Ironwold drive. The Crucial P3 is a fast, cheap PCIe 3.0 NVMe M.2 drive, and can currently be had for under $58 from Amazon AU via UK if you grab two of the 1tb models one plus something else to avail the 12% discount at www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0B25LZGGW.

It's obviously not as fast as latest gen PCIe 4 drives, but since the chipset on the 7060 is only PCIe 3.0, the 3,500/3,000mb per sec speeds of the 1Tb P3 makes it a perfect match. And since the existing used SSD is probably the most likely fail point of these PCs, you'll get a brand-new, bigger, snappy boot drive and free up space for whatever combination of internal 2.5" SSD, 3.5" HDD or optical drives you want.

    • Edit - “ can currently be had for under $58 from Amazon AU via UK if you grab two of the 1tb models or one plus something else…”

  • Hmmm, this, or the $499 HP?

    • if you want to game with it, go for the HP. if you want a basic desktop, go for this.

  • Able to get with No RAM/SSD??

  • +1

    I'm going to put this one here, instead of its own post as there are only 2 available;

Lenovo M75q Tiny PC AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 3400GE 16GB RAM 256GB SSD Win 11 HDMI WiFi - $317.89 with eBay Plus code REFU22

    • Please note that the Ryzen 3000 with Vega Graphics is a Zen+ 2000 CPU, more info.
  • If one was to consider adding a GPU card what would be recommended for this PC?

    • +1

This has the space for a GPU that is specifically advertised as a Low Profile, which is smaller than a normal Graphics Card.

A GTX 1650 Low Profile is appropriate, but at a total price of $235 + $200, I don't think its going to be cost effective for the level or performance.

Edit: This isn't much more expensive, but a great deal more powerful GPU.

      • Thank you for the detailed information

    • Also you will be limited by the psu normally in the 200w to 300w range with no 8pin for gpu.
And, often in these SFF machines they have proprietary mobos and power connectors (not always you could get lucky), to stop people from adding larger psus with 8 pins for gpus.

So as stated you will be stuck with low profile 1650.

There are better options if you want cheap gaming, see techfast or bpctech deals in computer section.

    • I think these SFF machines all equip with 180w PSU… not sure if 1650 is able to run though

      • 7050 has 180w PSU, but this 7060 has a slightly better 200w PSU.

  • oos

  • OOS already, it's a Friday night…

    • +2

      It's Saturday, Sunday what?

    • Kickin' in the front seat
      Sittin' in the back seat
      Gotta make my mind up
      Which seat can I take?

  • Damn it, I literally just 2 days ago bought the almost exact same model (8gb ram vs 16gb ram, and 8500T vs 8500) for $15 dollars more. Though I guess the T is better for me as it's lower energy usage. In any case it looks like it's already sold out :(

  • Interested in a used mini PC.
Wanting a tv media player via HDMI.
Lots of downloaded content stored on a HD.
What would be a suitable value proposition? Need to be able to encode 4k.
    Any advice appreciated team!!!!!

  • Thanks, looks like I'll be setting a PC for the mother in law this week.

Ram option is great, but is there any option for increasing the storage?

    • Plenty of room inside, just buy your own. A few TB hdd is a nice addition to the ssd.
They don't build it for you unless they have used stuff lying around, or the previous owner removed the original drives.

Is the supplied ssd a sata or m2 nvme?

  • I am a bit confused. If I just use pc for home usage, not for game. Should I buy a brand new mini PC. Refurbed PC is cheaper but it has slower cpu. It doesn't look like a bargain, but it has lower spec and the value match that spec. Yes, refurbed pc has more slot and you can plug in more device. For home usage, I don't think this is necessary.

  • As a PC that will never do any gaming, is this what I should be looking at rather than putting something together myself?

Other than being a few generations old, am I going to notice very much?

    • no you wont notice anything

  • I regret not purchasing.

    • You get such deals pretty often though. Maybe not so many with 8th gen intel cpus, but in not so distant future there are going to be more of these deals popping up.
