What the (profanity) is with the growing trend of making people create accounts just to purchase something?
I already hate the "you're now on a mailing list without even asking" bullshit, but making an account is the next level up.

      • +33

Perfectly reasonable complaint about a consumer hostile practice

    • +1

Indeed. I've noticed this lately and will back out if I can find another website that doesn't require registration!

    • +15

      Definitely, it’s BS.

Sorry taking my data to be stored indefinitely in some no doubt crappy system so that its one day released to the world via a hack.

Only thing that shits me more is having to populate and save all my details in a website before I can see a shipping estimate!

      • +1

I just give em fake name and mobile. NO biggie.

        • +1

Will work for you, knowing my luck I will be that 1% chance something wrong happens to the package and now I'm utterly screwed trying to "outsmart" the dumbarse system.

    • +2

you don't have a 'burner' email account?

      • +15

My burner account is one of my main accounts now. I have given it to everything!

      • Exactly lol

      • I shouldn't need one.
That's part of the point I'm making.

        • +1

You're right that you shouldn't need to but since you do, you can use an email alias like SimpleLogin, all correspondence gets forwarded to your main email while keeping it private, keep it active until your business is done and then just switch it off

      • +2

Piggybacking off this… I use ‘Hide my email’ that’s included with iCloud and just make a new address for this kind of thing.

It lets you add a note about what you used the address for which is handy to see which website gave out your details

        • +2

you can do that with Google/Gmail too. All you do is add a Plus sign to your address and everything after it is ignored (but recorded)
          e.g.: [email protected]

          • +2

@blackfrancis75: Not the same thing as Hide My Email with icloud.
Hide My Email creates a random email, so even if a site had its data leaked, your real email wouldn't be discoverable

            • +1

@ihuntbargains: Furthermore, if that site starts spamming the bejesus out of you (even after unsubscribing), you can shitcan it with one click when using HME with iCloud+.

          • @blackfrancis75: Yes but you're giving away your real email in the process. Anyone can remove the + alias and spam your real email.

          • @blackfrancis75: A nice trick, but companies know they can strip the +nnnn part out to get your real email

      • +1

There's also disposable email for one-off registration. You can click on an email link to complete registration, but it doesn't have anything to do with your personal account.

    • +1

website is shite too. It can't handle it's own settings. Don't dare try to use a different shipping and billing address. And there's the ' no click & collect conundrum on all items. So if it's not there, you will need to wait a month to get what you are after

    • +2

Total Tools send SO MUCH SPAM. I'd say if you can't buy it in store, don't even bother if you're forced to be added to their marketing list.

Although I don't think they are as bad as Kogan when it comes to trying to unsubscribe.

I bought this for $20 and picked it up from the local store the last time it was on special. I use often it to modify my pizza oven. For the price and the number of attachments you get, it's the best $20 l spent in 2022.

    • +1

what do you need to change for your pizza oven from time to time?

      • +6

I upgraded the top heating element, then installed an AC to dc12v converter to install a fan to keep the heating element wiring cool. Recently installed better insulation and upgraded the fan.

  • Thanks mate. My dad is handyman minded and hates expensive gifts, so this ticks both boxes.

    • +2

      Put hands up for Detroit!!

  • +2

Many of these rotary tools are the same with different brand stickers and wattage claims can be fairly exaggerated. Good price for a hobbyist unit, but nowhere near the quality and performance of a Dremel unit. The accessories can be so-so.

  • So these are made in Detroit? Not China?

    • +17

      It's made in Detroit, China

  • Thank you.

  • No delivery?

    • Yes they do.

      • Odd it's only allowing me to c&c and no stock around me, do I have to spend a certain amount for delivery?

        • +2

You need to add a delivery address in the personal details area. F#$&Ed me around for a while too.

  • +2

Is this compatible with Dremel accessories?

    • +1

Does anyone know if they are compatible?

    • +1

They are all pretty standard. Except for the special locking systems they use for the cutting wheels etc… But they are still a chuck fit anyway.

Edit: you can even buy different size collettes cheap from ebay/Aliexpress.

      • +1

        collettes cheap

        here…

        • +2

Expected Toni Collette to be honest.

          • @brendanm: Is she cheap though?

  • Good timing as my Ozito is behaving strangely. It’s not able to hold the drill bits, the chuck liner thingy is worn and had to be replaced. I had the same issue with the Aldi one in the past and returned it. Is it because I’m using it incorrectly somehow and upset the rotary gods?

    • +3

Less pressure more speed. Are the collets brass or alloy? Get a set of brass collets they are stronger.
There's also adjustable chucks if your bits are a bit under/oversized, I often find inconsistency in these cheap accessories.
What type of bits are you using? Try to mount them as far in and short as possible to prevent wobbling. If you feel there's too much vibration then get rid of it.

If you are wondering which Rotary God to worship I suggest the Proxxon line, they have heat treated hardened steel collets on viagra which are stronger than brass or alloy and they last much longer. I used them for years and hardly any wear, at $15 a set they are a steal.
      https://www.proxxon.com/en/micromot/28940.php

      https://www.mytoolstore.com.au/products/Proxxon-MICROMOT-230…

Proxxon is all about Quality and Robustness and Dremel(overpriced toy junk) nothing to compare.
If you often use rotary tool, you will not regret buying a Proxxon.

      • Thanks for the write up. They came with the tools, presumably brass since they are yellow? When I took it off, there’s fine yellow dust all over the place. Replacements are much thicker so it must have been worn. The bits are also the originals from the set, as soon as I feel them vibrate, I try to reach the power button. Tried to look it up and show you but Bunnings is down lol what are the odds.

I never quite go high speed because it’s harder to control and someone has told me slower is better because less heat. So when do you go fast and when do you slow down?

Proxxon looks interesting, but I like the pro one you posted from AliExpress above. They look like they don’t need a collect, which might get rid of my problems.

      • so proxxon are good ?
i havent heard of them before

      • Vag

      • Just received my Proxxon collect. Very impressed. I don’t think I need to buy a new rotary tool now. It’s holding the bits in place and nothing’s flying!!!!! Came back to thank you 😘

  • Can this be used as like a cordless screwdriver? Looking for smth to drill hooks into the back of a door

    • +9

No, spindle speed way too speedy, too little torque. You need a gearbox.
A cordless drill has a gearbox that steps down the speed and increases torque. This rotary tool is direct shaft driven.

      • +2

Glad I asked before buying. Thanks appreciate the response

    • Looking for smth to drill hooks into the back of a door

      Would be fine for that…

  • Thanks. Got one. Always good for smaller projects.

  • Great deal. Just bought 4 of them. Thank you for the post.

  • This looks exactly like an old ozito one I got.

  • +5

Uhmm, I should check my storage room before buying to make sure I don't have a couple of these already

  • +4

Thank god my local store in Bunbury, WA doesn't have any because I refuse to shop with incompetent employees and managers lol. If ever there was a shop name so appropriate, it is this one. Total Tools in Bunbury alright.

    • +1

All their employees are named Richard

  • Does the site glitch for anyone else?

    • +1

Yes it was super weird loading it would just cycle through. I ended up going into the website manually via url and got through that way.

    • It's a POS

  • Thanks OP, have needed to replace my cordless tool pro one for a while now!

  • What is the main task you use this tool for?

    • +8

      DIY dental and cosmetic surgery.

      • +1

They're also good for speed grinding fingernails, nasal hair trimming and buffing calluses when the belt sander is out of action.

    • +1

      removing grout between tiles

What the best disc to use for this mate …

  • How do you use the referral code with this?

    • Too late …

      • So referrals no longer work?

        • Should still work as still can see it on my account.

          • @Bii: Can't see anywhere to enter the code. There's nothing on signup page or in the checkout

  • sorry what can we do with this? I want to but it for my kids dad (me) but I have no idea what it does…

    • +1

apparently for diy dental and grinding fingernails. I'm sold!

      • If it’s not too loud, can definitely use to trim your pet’s nails.

    • +2

Depends on what you do? I have been using one to carefully dig around mortar to take out a copper pipe the last couple days. Previous used it to restore some garden statues, drill holes in gem stones to make earrings. Very interesting device to have.

      • thanks I don't really do much DIY tbh so probably it will just collect dust. Thanks for your valuable input though - really helpful :)

  • Thanks got one!

  • -1

Time to return the aldi one and get this instead

Both of them would have been sitting unused for years but at least I earn ozbargain cred for this one 😂

    • Thanks for the neg
I was only able to track what I had bought by looking for this comment 😂
And there I was trying to collect this order, like a total tool, at supercheap auto at 5:15pm, because I didn’t go at 8:15am when supercheap auto was closed but total tools would have been open 🤦‍♂️

  • Picked up one of these from kmart years agofor 5 bucks, used once, don't need any more, don't know why this is a deal, is Detroit a legit brand or another home brand?

    • It's the brand ~equiv of Bunnings Ozito.

  • I got on the same deal in December. Have sort of used it once but it's a very decent bit of kit for twenty bucks.
