Does it only measure cycles since OS re-install, or lifetime?

In any case, mine is about 43,800 / 45,000 mWh, so some of these were not used much at all.

  • I bought a Surface Pro 6 (Refurbished) for 494 but the battery came at 71% health then immediately fall to 68% after one charge. Seller haven’t responded yet (24 hours)even their description said battery for refurbished is minimum 80% …

    • Sounds like the battery is dead, the readings are unlikely to be consistent

      • Mine has fluctuated from 50% to 75% but powercfg is showing daily numbers more consistent at just on 70.

Just now it was 60.9 and pull power cord and it shows 73.8.

Just got a new firmware update installed as well. Hopefully it settles or I just stop looking.

        • Can someone check with the battery app if anything changes to health when you unplug the charger. Mine changes dramatically.

  • Received mine today… 86% battery health / 97 charges. Most impressively, my keyboard looks brand new.

  • Mine arrived yesterday. Device visually looks in decent condition. Keyboard only has minor scuffs on it. Battery at 91% with 302 discharges. SSD health is 95% with 1754 power on hours.

Was unsure if I'd even keep it as purchased purely on Fomo but think it will stay.

    • How do you test SSD health?

I am the same. Not sure what my use case will be but it is a nice portable retro machine up to PS1 games. All running from a MicroSD card.

May need to reach for power a lot in my case though.

    • +1

Finally ran CrystalDiskInfo. 4569 hours, 90% health.

  • +4

Purposely ran it on battery over the weekend while doing some life admin in front of the TV

Battery life is good enough for me - must have been like 5-6h of usage - plenty for what I need it for

    • Nice. Mine is about 3. Again may have to do.

  • Damn, mine battery health is only at 45%, after a full charge the next day showing less than 80%.

    • +1

So 45 or 80? Or both as they seem to be all over the place.

      • +2

45% health would mean capacity is 45% of original spec. That was 45Wh, so he has only 20.25Wh capacity. 80% means it lost 1/5 of its charge overnight while in sleep mode.
This battery needs replacement, and on any other laptop that would be worthwhile. But the Surface is designed to make that very difficult. There is a good chance of destroying the screen while trying to open it up.

Ordering from ACT is always a gamble. Like a box of chocolates. Don't count your chickens before they are hatched, and be prepared to send it back. Their competitors are the same, so what are you going to do? Ebay Plus has free-postage returns, so no need to dispute.

        • Thanks for the advice, I am already searching how to replace battery myself and first step got me, you need some sort of pro device I need seen before to heat up the screen to loosen the glue. Nah I will just return it this time.

        • This is the way!
When you are ready to return the plan It's just a gambling game.Because if you really need a computer, you should buy a new one.My computer is my slowest digital product to update

  • +3

For the sake of documenting things:

    • Pro 5 - i5 7300U as advertised
    • Great condition from what I can tell. Certainly better than I expected. Seems to be all over the shop though reading the comments
    • 65W charger included
    • Battery has 105 cycles at 96.4% health
    • No issues with the pen I had from my old Surface Laptop

I'll update more on how it behaves after I use it a bit more. Only picked it up this morning due to delays like others experiences with AusPost.

  • Mine has settled.

56% battery health. Not that close to 70%. Shame.

    • Let us know how the refund/return process goes please.

  • It seems like they have advertised the same item,, but higher price … :)

    • +1

Hopefully it means more stock for those needing a replacement.

      • +1

Could be just returned items from this deal. That’s what I think.

        • But with the same descriptions :)

  • Received mine today - instead of a Surface Pro 6, mine is Surface Pro 6 Intel i5-8350u 8GB RAM 256GB SSD, battery health @ 94.8% but the keyboard is in bad shape and stinks a bit lol… Should I keep it?

    • Keyboards can sometimes go for cheap. I’ll swap you a good keyboard for the main device!

    • Ha, you win!
If the keyboard really is bad, buy a new one.
Get the original Microsoft Type Cover if you are using it a lot (e.g. student) or a $40 copy that uses bluetooth, and has its own battery.

  • Finally picked mine up from the parcel locker (where it was sent instead of the Post Office (?) and it’s 179 cycles and 81% battery. Not the worst but could be better. Will probably keep it, depending how that battery performs in real world usage

    • +1

Come on, under $200. If the battery still says around 80% after a couple of deep cycles, you got a bargain!

      • OK probably a stupid question, how do deep cycle to gauge the battery?

        • You don't. Discharging and charging doesn't seem to do anything at all. You run an app that tells you the health.

          • @boxall: That was my impression too

          • +2

@boxall: Discharging and full charge helps calibrate the battery monitor.
This is inside the battery controller, and report by the OS or apps.
It does not maker a difference to the battery life, just helps with the accuracy of the report.

            • @bargaino: I have done it twice now and my battery health is all over the place. 56-74%.

      • I was stupidly reading the report incorrectly. Actual battery health is 67%. Almost definitely going back now.

Looks like this was probably plugged in most of the time

  • Got mine today.
A few scuffs here and there but nothing major
    Has 333 cycles
How do I find battery health in the report?
    Design capacity 45000
    Full charge capacity 37760
    Does that make it 84%
    Thanks

    • +2

Yep, correct. You should get around 7 hours use.

      • Thanks mate…that's pretty decent.
Can't complain for the price paid.

    • App is BatteryInfoView or use at a command prompt powercfg/batteryreport

  • +2

Aus Computer Traders have looked after me. I will be keeping my Surface, as they just processed a partial $40 refund. So $151 for a Windows tablet/laptop with 2-3 hours battery is not bad value. I have found a new original keyboard and new surface pen on FB marketplace for I hope $80, so will see how it all pans out in the end.

And there is definitely a 12 month warranty. Being local helps there a lot!

Hope others get their situation sorted as well.

    • Why did you get a refund?

      • Keyboard quality, battery life. They offered it to me instead of a full refund and sending it back. Makes sense for them.

    • -1

E-waste is not worth keeping because you will be able to buy newer models soon
The important thing is that I think the seller is dishonest and using us to dispose of the garbage

      • +1

Still does enough for me especially at $150. Good portable monitor, good retro machine, good notetaking machine, good media device.

  • This works great BTW with an Apple Mac USB C Power Supply:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B087KTCLPD

  • 65% battery health…. seller isn't responding. Just great.

    • Via ebay???

      • Yes contacted via ebay

  • I just picked up mine from the post office. Turned out to be a Surface Pro 6 i5-8350u 8GB RAM 256GB SSD as well. Charger was in the box, keyboard surface is fine, edges a little tatty but not bad, some sticky goo on the outside with a keycap stuck to it.

    Battery Info: designed = 45,000mWh, actual = 35,830mWh, health = 79.6%

SSD Info: 17.356 TB writes, 438 power on count, 4101 power on hours, 95% health

Battery was flat, so will see how it goes after a charge.

I cant complain for what I've received for the price.

    • Turns out the charger supplied is from a Surface Book 2/3 or Surface Laptop Studio. Model 1798, 102W
      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/surface-power-su…

Also, the battery health tools don't seem to be reliable, or the battery has ups and downs. After a full charge last night it had a capacity of ~39,000mWh. Checked this morning, ~33,000mWh. Or perhaps due to the temperature?

I'm liking this device. I was looking for a replacement to my Lenovo Android tablet, was considering a Pixel, or duet chromebook. For couch browsing, kitchen recipe, etc. This seems more functional and cheaper.

  • Mine just came today with no charger in the box

Physically looks okay, but the device had 430 charge cycles and only 69% battery capacity (45,000 mWh design capacity, 31,250 mWh full charge capacity).

Debating whether to ask for a refund, however I don't have eBay plus

  • Ordered a few for family, seems I got shipped duds. Battery health of 46%, 15% on another which turns off when unplugged. One of the keyboards is also peeling, and neither had been properly cleaned.

  • Got mine on Monday, pretty bust, have messaged the seller no response yet. Battery wont last long and screen has internal damage.

  • Mine has a lot of scratches on the display and the corner, battery 76% after full charge, 285 cycle. Keyboard looks good though. Not sure if I should keep it

  • I have returned it
Battery life is only 50% And when the remaining 25% of the battery will automatically shut down

The reason I clicked on the refund was because it did not match the description then attach evidence.

E-waste is not worth keeping because you will be able to buy newer models soon

    • It is annoying how Microsoft seal these. Any other brand, and you could easily replace the battery and have a perfectly good laptop.
Hopefully the new EU rules will force Microsoft, Apple and other offenders to mend their ways.

    • It’s pretty pool they don’t do any quality check before shipping them out :(

    • What was your source of evidence you used?

      • I think we should block this seller Because he's a liar
The content of his advertisement deceived many people
In fact he just wants to use us to get rid of the inventory(e-waste)

Such behavior was not acceptable here

        • Frustrating thing is he dumped this & vanished, no response at all…

  • +1

Still no response via ebay about the battery issues. Do not recommend.

    • Ring them.

    • seller said : we do have more of these units but not at the price that you have originally purchased as that was a flash sale.
It means the garbage has been disposed of so you have to pay more to get the better machine

But will never offer you a replacement

      • Luck of the draw. Some people scored a 6th gen, some got great batteries.

Just don't get emotionally invested until you've tested it. If it's not as described, use the eBay returns process.

        • You are right.

        • +2

It's not only "not as described". It's that the seller knowingly sold not as described devices and then never takes responsibility for it.

Received email asking for feedback this morning. Obviously left a negative feedback due to lack of response.

Received this shortly after 🤣. 0/10.

"We would be more than happy to arrange a replacement unit, however you have left us negative feedback without been able to assist you.

If you wish to remove your negative feedback, we would be more than happy to arrange a replacement."

    • "Feedback extortion" should be reported to Ebay.

      https://www.ebay.com.au/help/policies/feedback-policies/feed…

    • Hah, left negative feedback and what do you know, got a similar message: “ Thanks for reaching out and we are sorry to hear.

These items are not advertised as refurbished.

However we note that you have left us negative feedback without letting us address your issue or be able to assist.

We would be more than happy to organise replacement machines if you wish to remove you negative feedback first, alternativly you can open a return request through eBay for the devices to be refunded.”

      • Interesting. Was told there was no replacement option of a better machine so went with the $40 credit.

And the replacement may be even worse. This is what I was told:

“I am unable to check if these units are better battery/keyboard wise as these come in a mixed batch of units. “

        • Hi mate, How did ebay apply the $40 refund to your account as RFRB20/22 coupon code was used for the purchase? Cheers

          • @GPT4: Just got a $40 refund. Straight back into my credit card.

    • I might do the same, my unit battery die in about 2 - 3 hours of light use after full charge. I don’t think it’s good enough

      • Lol I did not leave a negative feedback but was politely send them a message telling them my battery is pretty bad and ask for replacement and this is their response: “ We are unable to offer a replacement as you will most likley receive the same, we do offer change-of-mind returns though. All you need to do is open a return request through eBay.”

        • I think the returned units will be sold over and over again. I am still ok with mine for $151 after the credit. Bit of glue on the keyboard has helped as well. Will get a new one though.

          • @boxall: Thats what is happening, My first one was heaps better.

            • @Ryxxi: Did they send you replacement that is worse than the original ?

  • BTW. Great wireless display.
Retro Gaming up to and including Saturn…

    Surprising.

    • Any guides to setup retro gaming on this?

Can the screen be cast to a 4K tv?

      • Haven't tried casting, but wired DP to HDMI works.

It is simply the same emulation as any PC. Retroarch for simplicity, LaunchBox for nice to have and native emulators for the harder ones.
I am simply using Retroarch for everything.

Got a sealed type keyboard and sealed surface pen for $80 combined on FB. Glass screen protector on and I have a great little device for about $230 all up.

    • Does the glass screen protector affect the sensitivity of touch screen and does it affect the keyboard attach to the device ? Thanks

      • +1

Nope all good for both. Got a surface pro 7 one as they all fit.

      • They are next to useless IMHO. The Surface already has a glass screen, and it it breaks it will very likely be from an impact at the edge.
I got a $15 pen (50% off, expired) from Amazon, does the job, occasional use. For a keyboard, if you are using it heavily, e.g. a student, i'd stick to name brand, so good deal for $80.

        • Just trying to protect the screen when using a pen. Not from impact if ever dropped.

          • @boxall: Screen is hard glass. Will not scratch. Screen protectors originated back in the days of Nokia, and plastic screens that were vulnerable to keys in your pocket.
The problem with Surface Pro is that they are very vulnerable to breaking in transport, lacking a hard fixed keyboard.
My kids' school pushes them, and so many kids have cracked screens.

            • @bargaino: Your call. I have a glass protector on my phone, iPad and now my surface. This surface already had a few barely noticeable scratches so it does scratch.

  • So been keeping an eye on the battery stats over the last week, after fulling charging it. Percentage seems to be slowly dropping from 91% down to 85% after probably 3-4 cycles. It just seems like its on a decline after every charge. Now im not complaining too much about the battery itself but is this generally something that will continue on its level of decline? A drop of 5% a week will add up pretty quickly.

I guess I can continue monitoring for the next 2 weeks as can send it back via eBay Plus.

    • 12 month warranty so should be fine. Mine fluctuates up and down every day.

      • Same up from 73% to 84% after another two charges. But 275 cycles

  • +3

Update: I managed to get a replacement but i think they are just sending out returned stuff from people here. My first one has 78% battery, 65W charger and something blocking the main camera everything else was good.

The new one's battery is 61% and the keyboard doesnt even work also got a smaller capacity 45w charger. i feel like I actually got scammed instead of getting a better one.

    • Yep thought that would be the case. The seller mentioned they wouldn’t be checking.
