  • Buy a case!

Curved edges and no touch rejection makes this a delicate hold.

Otherwise pretty darn neat device, this.

    • +2

does anyone use their phone without a case?

      • Good point. Even if it was strictly a home or office phone I'd still have a screen protector and case.

Those curved edges and no case make it look so nice when it's sitting on a desk but at this price, it'd look like rubbish with a cracked display for the rest of its life

      • +2

I personally havent used a case since the days of nokia belt cases.

Modern phones are all glass and steel and feel great.

    • +1

It comes bundled with a flimsy clear tpu case but yes the touch rejection can make playing games on landscape mode annoying

  • +2

Can anyone comment on the camera quality?

    • +5

      mediocre

    • +6

this phone is great in every aspects except camera and curve screen

      • +2

        and software updates

        • +1

I would have jumped on this but the software updates and mediocre camera is a stopper for me. I have been using Motorola exclusively for the last few years, love them but the camera issue pains me.

      • +1

and updates, I have the 30neo and I love it but motorola security updates suk and their customer service response is to use the rescue tool to reset your phone (yes it worked for me but it's a compete wipe)

    • +1

as long as it's reasonable light it's fine.

We have gone past the point of camera needing to be amazing, even the shitty oppo phones have a half decent sensor

like the average person is not needing to take a photo to be entered into photography comps

kid has the neo fusion the worse one than this and you hard pressed to tell change from it or a s20

      • +2

Neo and fusion are two different models. Neo is the cheaper smaller one.

    • +1

      It's got a good camera.

      This is my backup phone.
In some scenes, I think it even shoots better than the iPhone.

(This is because the iPhone requires a manual tap on the screen to pull up the brightness of the shot,
And most people actually don't know how to operate the iPhone's camera.
In contrast, the Moto's shooting is "more foolproof," and it's better suited to certain tasks for certain people.)

Of course, for for most scenarios, I'd recommend the iPhone.

      • +3

I'd like to add that not only is equipment important in photography, but the skill of the photographer is also very important.
For professional photographers, they will most likely get better results even if they only use their iPhones to take photos than the average person using a DSLR.

So most people don't need to worry too much about the Mote edge 30 not being able to utilize their photographic prowess.

        I hope this helps.

  • Thanks OP! How is the battery life on the Ultra with the latest software update? Previously owned an Edge 30 Pro and the battery drained pretty fast. Heard it's a SD Gen1 issue on the Pro but just wondering if the same thing happens to the Ultra as well?

    • +1

gsmarena ratings show that it should be better (80hr vs 92).

    • +2

      these are different CPUs:
      Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (buggy)
      vs
      Qualcomm SM8475 Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 (good)
so battery life is not an issue

      details are here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0ukXDnWlTY&t=138s

    • +1

Do not expect any software and security updates for second year.

    • i have it and it's quite good but i dont have much running in the background

Pricebeat at Officeworks and then pay with the same Ultimate gift cards for an additional 5% off. $564.44 total price. Be quick though as Officeworks will drop their price soon to avoid the pricebeat.

    • +1

officeworks stock is too limited to include in the post. https://nrby.in/officeworks/med30ulblk . Those who get the stock are lucky. They will probably have it matched already by tomorrow morning before anyone can beat like they usually do.

  • Can the gift card use for online purchase?

    • Yes

  • Can anyone tell me if this phone supports eSim? Cant find much info

    • +2

      No

      • All good, thankyou!

  • What's the normal price for this

    • +5

By the looks of it, under $700 since July

    • RRP $1399

    • Bought for 670 few months ago

  • Tried to use the giftcards to place an order online at JB Hifi and it says "the gift card must have 18 digits" but the Ultimate Gift Card has 19 digits. Does that mean it can only used in store as a credit card?

    • +1

probably. Remember to add it to a digital wallet to use in store.

    • +1

Last I used those had to be in store. Couldn’t buy online. Not sure a way around it. I took gift cards to store and scratched pin there. Bought a freezer and had 10x$100 ultimate GC.

      • +1

these ones aren't the physical scratch type. They're sent in email and need to be added to something like Google Wallet

        • Ahh my mistake. Was tempted to go into Officeworks today. They also got it in stock at local jb. Do I really need a new phone. Currently on iPhone 11. Jump ship to android or not. Sucks when stuck on Apple stuff. Might wait until this crap itself.

          • @Mikael: use it until it dies then switch to android.

            • @shxhshzhz: Yeah my thoughts too. Everything backed up. Keeping an old iPhone with my Turkish Apple for cheap subs. Also got a spare 11 here when wife upgraded hers.

              • @Mikael: keep it for a trade in bonus. The JB Pixel ones are pretty good sometimes.

    • Need to enter it in the credit card section and for the balance use JB hifi giftcards

Review of all current Motorola phones: Great phone. All you need. Not waterproof.

  • +1

Motorola always give spec but poor software support.

  • any dual sim options?

    • +1

      Specs indicate —-> Dual SIM (nano-SIM + nano-SIM)

  • +4

Motorola phones….they only worth less than $400 to me. Yet alone close to 700 for one….

At this price you might as well get the Pixel 7

  • Currently on an iPhone 11 Pro and looking at going back to Android. Considering Pixel 8 Pro atm, is it worth waiting for or will this have comparable grunt? I'm not a camera buff so I'm more looking for performance/battery life.

    • +1

Stick with a more mainstream one. Can't go wrong with Google Pixel or Samsung S

  • +1

New Google Pixel phone is coming out in a week, waiting for that

    • +1

Suspect it will be over 1k in price

  • +3

I own this phone, the 125w charger is the most awesome part, about 15 minutes from empty to full charge. The camera I think is great too. I have the google camera app and stock standard camera apps honestly has taken the best night time photo's.

I find the curved screen the only issue, but it looks like a lot of manufactures are going back to this type of screen. The lack of eSim, so what ??, how often do you change sims anyway, oh maybe when you go overseas, the phone has a dual sim anyway.

At this price, I challenge anyone to find a better phone… honestly is the camera on a $2,500 phone (4x price) that much better for the bulk of point and shoot happy snaps people take. I doubt it…

    • You have to remember the faster you charge it causes stress to the battery and hence the battery life will deteriorate faster as well

If the battery is good enough to last for a whole day no need to charge it mid day.

      So you can't win

  • Snapped it up during the last sale about a month back and kind of regret it.

Curved screen can be irritating as hell and should be a deal breaker for some.

If you can get past that though, it's great phone for the price. Snappy processor, sharp camera, super quick charge times and comes with 256gb storage.

  • The only thing I don't like about this phone is the curved screen. They curved it way too much!

  • @Ezyduzit @Bearig I haven't used a curved screen and had considered this phone.

Just wondering if these are the issues with curved screens that I read online and any more disadvantages? Thanks

    Curved screens may:

    • crack easily when dropped
    • not be compatible with a screen protector
    • be prone to accidental touching on the curves
    • content may spill over the curved edge
    • +1

Accidental touching and if an input is on the edges, it can be a pain the arse to get to sometimes.

Other than that, the battery itself is not that great if you are a heavy user. I'm coming from an oppo a9 which is about 3 years old and that seems to last just as long tbh.

With that said, I doubt you can find a phone like this in the price range with the specs on offer. Maybe the pixel pro if you're willing to wait for the inevitable price drop?

      • Thanks. Will stick to the flat display phones

    • don't you have multiple Neo's already?

      • We have 3 x Neo and had thought of upgrading one of them to the Ultra.
All 3 phones are still on Android 12. No 13 update yet

        • +1

the longer support of the Ultra could help with getting 13. Neo's still a great all rounder. Android 12 should stay usable for another 5 years.

          • +1

@shxhshzhz: Neo under $300 is excellent value. Almost as good as those who got G82 for $200

  • I have it, love it

  • I'm not as mad as others re: curved screens but wanted to let others know of my recent experience with a Moto 30 Fusion. Diff phone but also not waterproof..
There was no surprise in this instance. Mine met a pool for about 10 seconds in my pocket, it is dead. I don't own a pool but sometimes holidays take me near one!
I changed from a Huawei Mate 20 pro which I loved by NFC had stopped working. My next phone will be IP68 but it's sad this might take the form of an Edge 40 which is worse in every way than the Fusion! (except waterproof of course).
