Any idea when does the promo ends?
Offer ends on October 12, 2023 at 11:59pm AET

  • +30

Let's talk about the $400 price hike over the 7Pro. Australia is getting rammed, the US has a $100 price rise for the pro

    • +3

I was thinking same, both pixel got price hike by 100$ in the US but over here one is increasing by 200$ while other is increasing by 400$.
And not to mention the bonus Pixel watch for free while we get way lesser value store credit
So basically we pay even more and receive less.

      • Go Telstra and you can get free LTE watch.

      • +1

        That's the Australian way 🇦🇺🥲

    • +2

Aus dollar is super weak rn

      • +1

It more than double the price increase the US got

        • Need to look at cost of whole phone

          • +1

@Kanjus: This phone probably cost them $500 to make……the rest is profit. Google's getting greedy and is trying to assert a premium status by following in Apples footsteps without delivering the same level of quality on its devices or support. At least Apple has physical stores and great support for the price, not to mention great hardware to boot to justify the cost. Give it 3-6 months and watch the price on these tank due to lack of sales.

      • +3

USD$100 does not equal AUD$400, its AUD$157 at the current exchange rate. We're being ripped off deluxe.

        • How are we getting ripped off? Go buy the current sell price in both locations, not the increase over last gen.

Try and buy from the USA. $999usd +tax = ~$1730

Seems like more a case of they them not ajusting the 7 mid life to reflect the falling aud.

          • +3

@Duff5000: This is ozbargin. Don't bring a sensible argument if people can whinge about a price increase instead 😂

    • It sucks but look at the average wage difference between the two countries.

And the warranty rules. In aus manufacturers have to be prepared to supply warranty at any reasonable point even outside the 2 years supplied, thanks to our strong accc laws. Over there, the day it's outside warranty dates, their shit out if luck. So they have to factor warranty returns into our pricing.

      • I don't think the knowledge of that stuff on this site reflects the broader Aus population though, so I don't imagine too many people out there are getting 3 or 4 year old phones repaired/replaced for free.

Also warranty ruled have not changed in the last year to justify us going up by more than twice the US price.

    • +1

Let's talk about the $400 price hike over the 7Pro.

Factoring in the weak dollar and our prices include taxes, but the US is plus taxes, it isn't as bad as it seems.

    • Yes, but we get a pouch 👝

Seems the JB Hifi offer is the best, but we have been dudded.

  • +4

Its way too expensive… Nothing much new i guess? Wait for samsung 24 ultra? Too expensive pixel…

  • +7

Yeh, with the price hikes I think I'll pass this time and maybe wait for the sales later on.

    • +1

Sales discounts shall be juicy as no one is buying it at these prices.

      • Yes but need to wait till Feb until serious drops…

I bought one and had a store credit from pixel 7 pro purchase last year. However yes I don't the hike is fair if you look at US offers. Also 128gb vs 256gb our hike is more than us ..

I'll sell my pixel 7 pro and at the end my final costs may only be $500 but still…

      • Agreed. Very good phones but discounts on previous models tell their own story.

  • If I use google store credit to buy, do I get the promo credit?

    • +1

I did this last year and yes, got the promo credit. Check the terms and conditions though, as it might have changed this year.

    • +2

Yes just ordered with $300 I got from last year

      • You had $300 still active from the p7 deals? They usually time it so the credits expire before the release of the next phones.

        • +1

Yes I had the credit. Nop they did not expire and do not time it if you buy now. Last year for P7Pro also I used $300 credit from 2 x P6Pro I purchased the year before and got 2 x $150 credit

        • +1

Last years $300 credit is 365 days after the phone is dispatched or when it's credited to your account, not when you paid for it. So I order a new phone each year and get to use my $300 credit, plus I subscribe to Google One cloud storage which gives me another 10% off or $129 from last year, then I sell my old Pixel on eBay taking advantage of the sell 3 items for free. I've now owned every Pixel except for the Pixel 1 and the Pixel 5 and I've also owned several Nexus phones!!

  • +20

The pricing is just disgusting.. I was absolutely set on upgrading to the pro but one quick look at these new pricing standards and the way they've bottlenecked the regular 8 so hard that you almost "have" to get the pro means no way for me.

What exactly is "Pro" about the Pro? Is it the optical fingerprint sensor? The Exynos based chip that can only perform as good as Qualcomm chip that's over a year old? The 27W charging speed? The 128gb UFS 3.1 storage? The same short battery life?

Really failing to see any appeal whatsoever. I can't even imagine wanting to pay anything more than $1k for a product like this. Even $800 sounds like a lot.

This kind of pricing is making the iPhone very appealing. Still can't bring myself to jump ship though.

    • +3

Yeeeeep! Exactly my thoughts. The price hike is appalling this year

      • +1

Will be interesting to see how fast the price drops on this release. From reading the feedback on their media outlets like Reddit - it's gonna plummet fast.

    • I'll wait to see the comparisons between the p8 pro and the Nothing 2.

    • Is there anything under 1000 with a comparable camera and screen?

      50 MP, f/1.7, 25mm (wide), 1/1.31", 1.2µm, multi-directional PDAF, multi-zone Laser AF, OIS
      48 MP, f/2.8, 113mm (telephoto), 1/2.55", 0.7µm, dual pixel PDAF, OIS, 5x optical zoom
      48 MP, f/2.0, 126˚ (ultrawide), 0.8µm, dual pixel PDAF

      1344 x 2992 pixels, 489 ppi density

  • +5

    A pouch….. Pfft, please! 🙄

    • +9

Had to laugh at that. Imagine paying a small fortune for an under specced new release phone from a trillion dollar company and being upsold on pre ordering by a (profanity) ugly strapped camera bag 🤣

      • I would even call it insulting!!

…. But okay google, here's my money. Now give me my damn bag

  • +1

Damn time to wait for a sale on these, price hike too much.

  • +1

Price is disgusting, was looking forward to it but looks like it's going to be a massive flop.

Will wait until it's goes on sale.

  • +3

The price hike is insane. Although looked at in perspective, last year's Pixel 7 Pro was actually priced much cheaper in Australia currency converted +GST, this year it is around the same price as US currency converted including GST. I am keeping the 7 Pro.

    • JB do bonus $300 trade in credit which might make it tempting. Bonus gift card too. Still you're out of pocket like 1K after all that, assuming you want the watch too. Then you're stuck with JB credit for future purchase.

    • +1

Yep this. With both the 6/Pro and the 7/Pro, Australia had been the cheapest place in the world to buy a Pixel phone, even before you get to the deals galore - which I'll admit tended to be better in the US or Europe. Price hikes this time are just adjusting both for this and the piss poor AUD atm. And yet the phones are still cheaper here than in the US.

  • +6

I'm absolutely heartbroken by the price hike.

I thought today would mark the day for a price drop on the pixel 7 and then the pixel 8 would be marginally more expensive.
But $1699 for arguably cosmetic changes and a "new" cpu……… We are getting buggered

    • +10

      "Heartbroken" 😂

  • yeah that price bump is bit much, not that I'm due for an upgrade anyway but I am eying off the new google watch doe fitness tracking unless anyone has any recommendations on alternates

  • From initial testing looks like the Tensor 3 still suffered from overheating and no ultrasound fingerprint scanner in 2023 is just straight-up disrespectful.

But again reviewers will probably prop this phone up anyway. Don't believe the hype and HODL my fellow Ozbargainers.

    • +2

Well the good news is that the Face Unlock is now secure enough to use for banking etc, so less need to use the FP scanner (not justifying them in any way, they've definitely made some interesting decisions this year lol)

      • But does it work in the dark now? Haven't heard report on how Face ID improved in such condition?

    • any links to where the overheating comment came from? keen to have a read

  • Disappointed with minimal upgrade over pixel 7pro.

  • yeah nah

  • +2

I'm so disgusted by the price increase in Australia.

  • Anyone have a spare unidays or studentbeans code? PM me!

  • +5

For anyone who's currently rocking the Pixel 6 Pro, and thinking to upgrade, these are the more significant updates I've noted so far:

    1) HUGE increase to max brightness (P6P - 497/860nits, P8P - 1600/2400nits) - Really excited about this, as my P6P suffers outdoors
    2) Fully Flat Screen with rounded, smaller bezels - Better looks, potentially cheaper screen replacements?
    3) 7 years guaranteed updates - Longest time in the industry ATM?
    4) Face Unlock is now secure enough to use for banking etc - Less need to use the Optical FS
    5) Updated camera and features (presumably/hopefully better videography)
    6) Temperature sensor - Gimmick?

Have seriously been considering giving the iPhone 15 Pro a try this year, but I dunno if I can handle their iOS…

But yeah, pricing for this years Pixel lineup is insane - will be holding off purchasing till at least Black Friday

    • 3) 7 years guaranteed updates - Longest time in the industry ATM?

Yeah but the same will have to be applicable to the Pixel 9 and moving forward as well unless Google wanted to make this an one-off. So while I can appreciate the long commitment for software updates, it is not much of a selling point if the phone itself underperforms. Best wait till next year after at least one or two Feature Drop rounds and for the price to reduce as Google phones tend to and then grab it.

      • +1

Given Google's history of creating a service and then canning it because its not profitable, I'm wary of them actually going the distance and committing to these 7 years of OS updates. Time will tell.

  • Although very pissed by the huge price hike, it ended up no too bad:

I was committed because I sold my P7P last week for $600, so I was going to buy P8P regardless of the price.

    Pixel 8 Pro 128GB + Case: $1753.99
    student beans 10%: -$175.60
Google Store Credit from P7P: -$300

    Total Due: $1278.59

On top of that I'll receive $527.86 store credit (hopefully still valid for P9P):
    - $400 offer store credit
    - $127.86 Google One store credit

    • +2

And next year, you will count again $400+$127.86 credit as if you have a deal while purchasing P9P, as you are depending on $300 credit now from your previous P7P deal :) Isn't it amazing, that we get to feel that we get a deal two times with the same credit, or maybe every year when we upgrade? What is the effective discount on total deals of P7P + P8P?

      • Nope, I added them below the total paid.
I know it is virtual money for now, but yes, I will subtract it from the total next year on the Pixel 9.

    • It's not $1278 it's $1229. The 10% discount is applied on full RRP

      • I bought a case

    • On top of that I'll receive $527.86 store credit (hopefully still valid for P9P):
      - $400 offer store credit
      - $127.86 Google One store credit

I'd like to confirm if we get both the $400 and the Google One credit as well or just the $400.

      • You 100% get both

      • +1

yes Both !! O wrote it from my order screenshot.

But the thing is, I wrote the fineprint last week, and I read that we were limited to $450 of store credit per year. But apparently the limit did not apply here, as I can see $527.86 in the email. I'll double check when the coupon actually arrives, 24H after the order ships.

        • +1

Thanks for confirming, and an update on this would be greatly appreciated ;)

    • +1

How do you do the google one store credit? I'm not seeing it show up anywhere

      • Yes, i didn't find google one credit?

      • You need to be on the 2To plan to get the 10% off.
I subscribed one month ago, there is currently a 3 months offer with a reduced price.

        • Thanks.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. You have to be on the plan before you buy the phone?

I could have sworn last time I did this, there was an option to buy the plan while buying the phone. Which gave me the extra credit.

          • @Herbse: I'm not sure about this. I think that you can subscribe today, and wait at least 30 days before cancelling your plan and receive your credit.

I just bought it a month ahead to be on the safe side.

    • I only have $98 credit in Google store, so the Harvey Norman offer seems more tempting to me at $862.50, no way the Google credits can make it as cheap as this one even in next year
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/803565

  • So I can get pixel 8pro by turning in pixel7pro + $400 ?

  • So happy I bought the P7Pro 512GB for $1699 and that Google gave me a 10% off code when buying + took it overseas within 30 days so another 10% off + 10% Google One credit as I am on the 2TB plan. This is a poor upgrade given the significant price jack. The price of the 128GB P8Pro is $1699 :O

  • I've heard the photos taken on this are sub par. Has a tendency to pixelate.

    • I heard the phone was meant to be smooth, but there are so many visible squares seems to tend to pixelate

      • Would be great for Roblox though

  • +4

Google adopting Apple pricing it seems…….

  • Need a spare studentbeans or unidays code pleaseeeeee. PM me.

  • +1

The price hike is unreasonable. If we compare the products (8 Pro vs 7 Pro) - not a big difference to spend $400 for. Temperature sensor - probably I'll never use this. $400 Google Store Credit is also not much useful, haven't used Google 1 - 10% Credit of P7 Pro yet.
So I'd love to stick with my P7 Pro, or will try HN Offer.
    Ridiculous Price Hike by google.

    • +1

How do you receive the google one credit? What's the process? I already ordered my P8P

      • It doesn't appear in your account until after the phone is shipped to you.

        • Is google store and google one credit different?

      • I was referring the 10% Back you'll get if you have Google One > 1 TB Subscription. However, to prevent trial accounts to get this credit, google now only gives after 1 month.
Probably I didn't make clear, it's Google Store credit because of having Google One subscription, not credit to Google One.
So, if it's 1700 you are paying for Google Pixel 8 Pro,
        You'll get total (400 + 170 = 570) Google Store credit.
        $400 immediately in 24 Hrs
        10% of 1699 = 169.9 after 1 month.

Worst part is: What should I do with this credit? Buy another phone next year? 🤣 Can't be used for YouTube or Google Play or Google One subscription.

        • +1

We can use to buy pixel watch 2 with unidays discount 10% + 400 store credit and get back 100 bonus credit.

Which will be like buy phone and get watch free

          • @thirstyfordeals: Yep I plan on ordering the watch with the credits asap before preorder finishes to get another $100 to use for a charger base and case. Which will be like buy phone, get free watch and accessories.

Btw does google store order turn up as an international transaction? I'm undecided to risk a CC with international transaction fees for the extra warranty or go fee‐less without extra protection.

            • @Ashnova: My transaction came up as Google Australia. So i hope its same for you.

  • The credit bonus in Australia is a joke, not even enough to get a free Pixel Watch 2 when preordering a 8 pro. In the US, EU and Japan you either get a free watch straight away or equivalent credits.

    • or equivalent credit? I don't think they offer equivalent credit.

Honestly I'm fine with the $400 credit. The blue watch is very nice, would have been great match with the bay blue P8P but I don't really care having a watch. I'm fine without any device on my wrist.

      • I checked the Japan store and they offer 50k credit, which is near value of the watch (51k)

  • Interesting deal.
Have over $400 credit expiring soon

  • Interesting fact:

Last year after first day of preorder for Pixel 7 and 7 Pros, most delivery item were pushed back a few days, and some items were on "waiting list".

This year, 24 hours later, all models are still in stock and still being delivered on the 12th.

    Two possibles reasons:

    1) Google have considerably more stock and are more prepared than last year
    2) Pre-orders volumes are super low due to the price hike and lack of upgrade

I'm guessing 2, what do you think?

    • Yes 100% point 2. Only if Ozbargainers are not flocking to HN to put in their orders, there would have been a GC offer like last year on Day 1. For some people here its important to get the device on Day 1 at 9am

    • People bought the pixel 7 at a ~reasonable~ price and don't need a new phone like the pixel 8 at inflated price is my guess so yeah number 2.

My pixel 7 pro arrived on time and I ordered on 9th October, delivered on release day.

    • The votes on here are telling of how things are going.

Last year's pre order thread was a much better deal and lots of people jumped on it.

      This year. Meh.

  • If I buy Pixel 8 Pro now can I technically use the credit towards the watch 2 later (still availing the preorder discount+credit on the watch)? Hope I should be able to as the phone would have shipped before 12th.

    • +1

I'm waiting for same, finger crossed.

  • Anyone have a spare unidays or studentbeans code pretty please can you PM me?

  • Stand your ground everyone and hold off as they'll be forced to put them on sale. I'm waiting until black Friday or Christmas. Time for any bugs to be ironed out.

    • +1

I would have waited but I have $400 credit expiring in 10 days.

      • +1

Haha same! They are smart with the credit
