Here are some of the most common questions that tend to pop up (thanks to WookieMonster for assisting with the original write up):

What is Reward Gateway?

Reward Gateway is an employee program that gives you access to discounted eGift cards and cashback across a large range of retailers.

Can I sign up to Reward Gateway if my employer doesn't partiicipate or I'm self-employed?

Yes, API Lifestyle & Leisure offer casual memberships for $9.75 per month, and is available to anyone.

How do I access Reward Gateway?

Your employer needs to be subscribed to this program before you can apply to access the program. Once you are given access, you can log into Reward Gateway through:

The dedicated website for your company, or The SmartSpending app on iOS/Android devices.

What is the transaction fee?

Transaction fees will vary depending on the type of card used to complete the transaction. Recent feedback given by their support team is as follows:

MasterCard or Visa debit card: 0%
Standard MasterCard or Visa credit card: 0%
Premium / Platinum MasterCard or Visa credit card: 0.5%
Standard AMEX card: 1.5%
Premium AMEX card: 3%

Can I use prepaid gift cards (e.g. Vanilla Visa gift cards) as a payment method?

No. Reward Gateway requires all debit, credit and prepaid cards to support 3D Secure. Prepaid gift cards do not support 3D Secure, so they will be blocked by the payment processor.

What denominations of eGift cards are available through Reward Gateway?

Each retailer will have specific limits on the value of gift cards available through the program, and some may split larger amounts across multiple cards. Keep this in mind if a retailer limits the number of gift cards that can be redeemed online, and always read retailer-specific T&Cs before purchasing

How are the eGift cards delivered?

Electronically. Either print them from your account or use the SmartSpending app to display them on a mobile device. There is also a unique PIN associated with each one which you will need to input when redeeming a card.

Where can I use the eGift cards?

They can be used in-store or online. Note that only unlimited cards can be redeemed for online transactions but in-store is limited to 8 per transaction (subject to in-store discretion).

Is there a limit on the number of eGift cards I can buy?

Rewards Gateway will allow you to purchase up to the maximum amount on your first transaction each day, but as fraud protection on your account, the system will limit further transactions to only $300 for that day. Some retailers may also impose monthly limits so check the T&Cs of each one if you plan to spend big.

  • Any way to get a free membership?

    • Sorry, no, but if you know someone who's a member you could ask them to purchase a specific card for you. I've done that for someone before, but it was a person I knew personally and they were happy to give me their CC number for the purpose. YMMV

    • +2

You can pay for a membership @ $10 a month
      https://join.apilifestyle.com.au/

Ah I just saw this mentioned in the description

      • +1

Note that if you're trying to sign up for this they review sign ups manually, "we'll get back to you within 48 hours". So it might not be quick enough for the Cyber Monday stuff

        • True, can confirm they do that. I got a call within a couple of hours when I signed up I believe

          • +3

@theguyrules: Ha, they call you? Nuts, I hate talking on the phone. I was just signing up to get a slightly better discount than Macquarie Marketplace on JB Hifi cards since my coles is all out of the TCN giftcards.

            • +2

@rcgy: Yeah a lady called me and asked what I was signing up for.
Which I thought was a bit weird but she was lovely and processed my sign up and I had access later that day.
I think she wanted to let me know of all the benefits.

      • Thanks but no thanks, I give this a miss.

        • Uh ok. That doesn't seem like a reason for a neg. Or a reason at all.

          • @theguyrules: Having to get a membership does!

            • +1

@payless69: Negging a deal that says membership required because membership is required is a bit dumb.

Tbh, this deal doesn’t sound very exciting. We can often get 10%-15% off on JB gift cards.

    • +3

If you're referring to the physical gift cards purchased at Coles/Woolies/etc that's true, but those deals depend on:

      1. Going into a store in person.
      2. Finding stock of the denomination you want.
      3. Hope your card hasn't been scammed already before you use it.

With RG you can purchase electronically and the gift card is delivered immediately, ready for use straight away. Sure, it's not brilliant savings, but it's definitely hella convenient and better than paying full retail price.

      • true.

I appreciate what you’re saying. It is a deal for sure, just not a very exciting one.

@Carzzozz - inflation kicking in on GC discounts. Last year, this time, I bought JB @7.5% off. Times have changed and I haven't looked at anything other than 15%. Even Coles is being stingy now on their MasterCards.

    • I agree. I've noticed some others have also gone down (e.g. EB Games dropped from 10% to 8% about a year ago on their standard discount). At least my good friend Dan still lets me get 5% off every day - I saved quite a bit on the weekend when there was an additional 10% off for online orders.

      • EB has sinced droped to 6% recently

        • Dayum!! You're right…I hadn't seen that until you mentioned it. Bummer.

    • JB haven’t been 7.5% discount for a while…

      • +1

Currently 15% if you can find TCN GCs at Coles lol…but probably a bit late for that maybe

    • +1

Inflation doesn't affect the discounts on group cards. That's the greed of corporate and shareholders expecting new record profits every year. With people spending less money they have to scrape the people who still are for more.

      • Inflation probably affects their costs base and so they're trying to minimize the cost of revenue (i.e. discounts). What I'm grieving more right now is that I bought some at 7.5% off last year whereas I could have stocked up during 15% promos last year and this year. The 6.5% is looking like a joke lol, you could probably head to the Classified section and get some at 10%++ off (with the obvious scam risk).

  • Not sure if it’s still the case but there used to be an annual limit of JB HIFI gift vouchers… from memory it was about $3,000. Not sure if there’s still a limit still 🤔 If there is, I haven’t recently encountered it.

Just mentioning it in case someone wants to go crazy and buy a shed load of vouchers.

    • +2

Hmmm…I've never seen an annual limit, but there's definitely a monthly limit. Reward Gateway T&Cs for this specific retailer state:

Please be aware of the Instant eGift Card spending limits we have in place to protect you and your account:

      • 5 orders per day maximum
      • 10 orders per week maximum
      • maximum $A5000 spent in last 30 days

Choose the value of your first order carefully as the 2nd and 3rd orders for the same retailer are restricted to $300 each in that 24 hour period.

You'd have to check JB's on T&Cs in case they have limits imposed on a personal account, in which case you just purchase anonymously instead.

  • Need to pay a balance for new washing machine at Harvey Norman today. Does anyone know if buying gift cards at 3% discount at Macquarie bank is my best option?

    • +3

Have you already taken advantage of the Prezzee BF/CM, Prezzee NAB and Gift Card Exchange deals? The Prezzee gift cards can be exchanged for Harvey Norman gift cards, and the GCX deal includes Harvey Norman.

If so, then I would suggest checking the discounted gift card wiki to see whether you have access to any other portals selling Harvey Norman gift cards at a better discount.

I paid off a whole house-full of appliances at HN a couple of years ago using Redeem Your Gift Card and it saved me quite a lot. At the time they only accepted bank transfer for payment and allowed up to a maximum purchase of $2.5K per transaction. It's important to note they are not instantly available, either. Usually it was 24-48 hrs to come through by email, the longest was 6 days but that also included a weekend. It struck me they had someone manually processing transactions.

Thanks a lot guys! Gift Card Exchange worked for me smoothly! :)

YW. I'm glad you found a good solution.
