1560

50% Discount on the Airalo 10Gb 30day Japan eSim, so now $9.00 USD or around A$13.70. Deal expires in the new year.

Used these esims on a recent trip, decent speeds and coverage was fine but we were in main tourist areas only.

Remember to check for phone compatibility.

Update from comments - Try JAN15 (New customers) and JAN10 (Existing customers) for extra discount. Also remember to use referral for extra USD$3 off if new user and cashrewards! Referral savings is probably better than the codes if they don't stack.

  • It mentions that the 30D starts from the initial activation, how long do you have to activate? Have a Japan trip in March, so thinking this might work well?

    • how long do you have to activate?

The validity period starts when the eSIM connects to any supported network/s.

      • Yeh so purchase now and wait to activate in march, all good?

      • So it can be activated e.g. in April?

    • +2

Not sure, try ask support but I just purchased 2 and there's nothing that says there's a limitation. Careful though on installing the eSim as it says it can't be installed again. I would leave it not installed until closer to travel date for that reason…

    • +2

I reached out to support and they said below:

Most Airalo eSIM packages activate (you have access to data) when the eSIM installed on your device connects to an allowed network at the destination.

This means that you must be located in your data package's country to be able to connect to a network. Therefore, if you're still at home, please don't try to activate your eSIM because you won't be able to connect to the local network.

At this time, when your eSIM connects to the local network, the validity of the eSIM starts.

However, for some eSIMs, the validity period starts at the installation. Therefore, we suggest installing the eSIM a day or a few hours before your trip, otherwise, you'll waste precious days of your data plan.

You may check these details under the eSIM's 'Additional Information', or you can also ask us for any more information that you would like to know.

Had an online chat with Airalo and they've confirmed we can activate it in March 2024.

They've also sent through a copy of the conversation transcript.

      • apologies but just to clarify is that march 2024 at the latest or is that just an example of a time in the future we could activate it?

        • +3

As I'm traveling to Japan in March 2024, so I've only asked about March 2024. Might be worth having a live chat with them just to reconfirm, here's the copy of conversation transcript.

Yes, you can purchase it now, then use it in March 2024.

We have included some important information and instructions about installing and activating your eSIM below.

STEP 1. INSTALLATION (before you reach your destination country)

You can install the package a day or a few hours before you travel to your destination country.
We recommend that you install the eSIM before traveling because you need a stable internet connection, preferably Wi-Fi from a wired connection.

STEP 2. ACTIVATION (once you reach your destination country)

Most eSIM packages will activate when the eSIM installed on your device connects to an allowed network at the destination. This means that you must be located in your data package's country to be able to connect to a network. Therefore, if you're still at home, please don't try to activate your eSIM because you won't be able to connect to the local network.

        • when I asked them they said no expiry date for purchased eSIMs - I've got a few in my account now, I normally only install them just before leaving on the trip, that way they activate upon landing.

    • It says 04/27 as you're going through the payment page. It would most likely be the latest you have to activate the esim

      • where did you see that? i still cant find it

        • I noticed it right as I clicked pay so I couldn't screenshot it. It was written right under the esim. It'll be good if someone else here buying one can confirm

      • Is it April 2027 or 27th April?

        • This is a good point, there's no way of knowing unless you contact customer support I guess

    • Yes, I have a euro trip coming up in May and bought both our esims to cover the trip. we used airalo last year and worked perfectly and much cheaper than local deals ive used in the past. just note they are data only which works well with all voip options available now like whatsapp/signal/messenger etc.. This is a great deal and half the price we paid last year. The other winner is they use the best networks in the country i'm visiting whereas some others don't. vodofone is usually #1 for a lot of european countries.. it's like their Telstra 4g where as the rest are sub optus networks.

Used this in Japan early last month, found it worked perfectly fine (other than in tunnels).
Make sure you take a screenshot of the instructions you need to finalise setup (I had to join the Haneda airport wifi to get it working), especially the description of the APN name you have to enter.
Tested in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and some smaller regional areas in between.

    • +3

We used it in Hiroshima/Miyajima, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka enroute to Nagoya/Tokyo and Tokyo.

      • +1

Ah yes! How could I have forgotten Hiroshima and the gorgeous island of Miyajima (best craft beer I had in Japan was at a stall down the "eat street").

  • +4

Will be in Japan for around 20 days over some regional areas and working remotely, so anticipate potentially up to 1GB/day usage.

Any issues if I purchase 2 of these and just rollover and activate the 2nd eSIM when I’m close to depleting the first?

    • Curious to know the same - I'm there for 10 days and whilst 10GB may be enough, for $9 aud (having used a voucher), I would be tempted to do so just for lazy peace of mind.

    • You can just buy one esim and then top it up another 10Gb for $9USD… seems the 10Gb 'top up' is also discounted. :)

  • +5

Seems like a good deal! Price in AUD in title please

    • Fixed :) Cheers.

Need this for Bali or Thailand 🐀🐀🐀

    • -1

Yes. I assumed we cant use it in Bali.

    • Used their Bali one last week when there. Paid about $30 for 10GB with a 30 day validity and it worked very well. Could have got away with 5GB (was there 10 days).

On previous visits I have used a local SIM card and there are loads of vendors for those at Bali airport arrivals who will set them up for you. Advantages are you get calls and texts included and it can be cheaper, especially if you wait until you are outside the airport and buy one from a regular store. That said, you can do everything you need to via whatsapp with an eSIM.

Disadvantages are having to provide your passport and making sure you don't lose your regular SIM card. My previous phone was dual SIM which really came into its own when overseas so it is easier if you have a dual SIM phone.

There is a 15% off discount code for new Airalo customers that we used.

  • Also interested in whether we can buy and activate, say, 6 months later
    Has anyone done this?

    • they've said no issue in doing this when I checked with them

    • They gave this reply when I asked if I could activate in October:

Please note that the eSIM won't get activated unless you are in Japan on October.

So you would be able to install it before going to Japan and it will still not activate.

They avoided any mentions of expiry so I guess this will work for later this year.

  • Hi OP, are you able to please confirm if we purchase now, it'll be fine to activate in March 2024 since we're going to Japan in March?

    Thank you.

    • I bought a top-up to an expired eSIM from them and it remains unactivated for me. Previously activation happened automatically once I connected to the network in Tokyo.

I can't say it will work for sure until Feb next year, but it looks like it.

  • +5

    I have the answer

Yes, you can install it now, then purchase it in a few years, but, keep in mind, there may be a network change during that period. In that case, we ask you to simply contact us for a replacement!

Please let us know how you go, and do not hesitate to reach out if you need any more help.

    Warm Regards,
    Airalo Support

Can combine with further coupon discount at checkout.

For existing customers use code: DEC10

For new customers use code: DEC15

    • +1

Works, but also I used a random referral code for $3USD off.

      • hey, did you stack the referral code with dec10/15? i can only seem to apply one code at a time..

        • +1

Nah just the referral code. Ended up less than $10 AUD tho

      • I did the same, there are plenty listed online so thanks to the random stranger.

    • DEC15 is just 15% off $9usd which is actually less than the $3usd referral code

  • Airalo is absolute ass in Japan. Would not recommend it.
I used it in the beginning of this year, would not connect to data, and when it would, only for a few minutes at a time.
Its like too many people were on their network and they could not cope.
I ended up switching to $5 roaming which actually worked 100% of the time I was there.

    • Ubigi worked great for me in Japan.

      • I've just come back from Japan and this is the third time I've used Ubigi in japan and it really dropped the ball. I would be in a supermarket with at least 2 bars and it would not translate images.

Other bursty internet was very poor, but once connected, it was reasonable.

        Previous trips it was awesome.

        When were you there?

      • ordered for a second/backup phone for trip next year.. I usually use Ubigi which has been great.

    • +1

I have had no problems the 3 times I've used it

    • I disagree - just got back from a month in Japan, it was rock solid. You can choose between NTT (I think) and SoftBank networks. It was great. Could make calls back home, stream video and music no worries.

    • My Vodafone $5 roaming sucked but I needed it for the number and the SMSs, I ended up using the Airalo data off my kid's phone when the Vodafone wouldn't work at all.

Was in Tokyo early-mid Dec 2023 (Shinagaway/Ota/Kawasaki etc).

      So reverse experience I guess.

Though also to note, I didn't have a problem with the Vodafone in Japan for 10 days in November, with 2 days in Tokyo but that was mainly in Tokyo/Ginza.

  • +1

Might use this as a $10 backup to the pocket wifi we have rented. Thanks again OP.

  • +1

Used Airalo esim for a month in Japan recently. It was uncomplicated and worked well. Will use it again next time

  • I use Airalo every time I go to Japan now - about four times this year for work.

Works great, as someone said, make sure you either set the apn stuff or take screenshots before you land.

Either way, all the airports are covered in free wifi so you can just jump into the app then and set it all up before you jump on the train out.

  • going in may next year, when do i need to activate by?

    • It says 04/27 as you're going through the payment page. It would most likely be the latest you have to activate the esim

  • Perfect timing, I'm off to Okinawa in 3 weeks! Thanks

  • +1

Damn, that's a good price - I'm going in Jan and bought the BF TravelKon esim which On Sale was double this price

    • +1

Yea this makes travelkon look like a rort

  • Thanks community, I have got mine for a trip in Feb next year and am very happy :)

  • -3

nice I always wanted a Japanese sim now I can beam an internet connection to Japan using my tin foil hat and get superior speeds

  • Is it easy to buy a one month sim plan in Japan? These sound a bit small unless you don't use youtube etc.

    • -1

Do you plan on binging YoiTube on your hpliday to Japan?

      • people have downtime.

      • Question is related to youtube and streaming services, plus search data etc?

  • Can we buy two and use them one after another? Not sure if 10GB would be enough for my trip especially given its length

    • How long is your trip

  • Thanks so much for posting I’m going in March and June so this really helps. Cheers

  • Do they round your data usage up by the kbyte or mbyte? 10gb won't go far if it's by the mbyte, and it doesn't seem to be listed in their website T&C's.

  • Are these travel sims really any better than just grabbing a local SIM plan when you arrive at your destination? Eg I get to Singapore and just grab a 1-month unlimited calls & data plan from a local shopping centre, and it costs me AU$15, and works in most Asian countries. They always seem hard to beat.

    • +2

Yes that’s what I used to do..
Benefit of the e-sim is you don’t need to physically swap out the SIM card, and while overseas, I can retain my Aus number to receive sms and voice calls, while using the eSIM for data only

      • Ok, thanks. Do you mean: you leave your Aussie sim in your phone and you leave it active, and then when you land somewhere overseas, it automatically still receives incoming phone calls and SMS messages.. you don't need to activate and pay for a daily roaming thing here with your carrier before you leave home for that to happen?

        • +1

That entirely depends on your Aussie plan/carrier.

    • Depends on the country that you are travelling to I suppose. For Japan for example, I don't think you could get unlimited call + data for $15. Some of the travel sim advertised would be cheaper compared to if you just get it when you arrive at your destination.

The other reason would be convenience, you have a sim ready as you land, rather than having to look for one.

  • +3

I'm a big advocate for using e-sims nowadays and this will be great for my trip to Japan in March too.

I used to think it was worth getting a local sim card (especially when travelling in SE Asia), but the amount of time, fuss and registration it takes to sign myself up for a SIM card worth $3 is not worth it nowadays.

The only country I found this to be pretty easy was Singapore. My experience with local SIM purchases in other SE Asia countries have always been a lot of hassle.

Purchasing an e-sim saves you time, time you've worked hard for to get that time off.

  • Ubigi seems to be well-liked offering 5G/LTE and I also made the purchase for my Japan trip tomorrow.

Can use Ubigi 20% Off Promo Code: AKY5T3Z1

Came to US$13.60 (RRP US$17.00) to about AU$21.30 that was spent for 10GB / 30 days one-time purchase.

  • Can you buy 1 SIM to share data with 2 people? e.g. activating the same SIM with 2 people

    • +3

      No, you could hotspot though…

  • Using it right now, so far it's working great.

    • Can I just say Vodafone roaming sucks in Tokyo…? 3 other eSIMs using this deal works great and I am paying $5 a day…

Wish you could forward SMS codes to an email or something.

  • Instead of buying 2 x 10gb esims, can we just buy the 1 x 10gb esim and then TOP UP another 10gb so that it now becomes 1 X 20gb esim?

This will save me the hassle of having to use up one 10gb esim and then activate the second esim and use that 10gb on that esim..

    • Not sure if only the data will top up, and not the expiry (duration). Not sure if you can top up a non activated eSIM.

So probably doesn't work if it's for a future trip or if you want 30 days etc… It only takes like 2 minutes to activate a new eSIM so it's relatively hassle free? And you can see how much data you've used any time on your phone and via the Airalo webpage.

    • you can top up, it appears that it resets the 30 days.

  • How can you add more data? And what is the cost?

    • You can top up eSIMs at the same rate it seems including at the promo rate of this deal (may require activated eSIM though).

      • Thanks!

        • +1

Note expiry date of the deal though! Prices will be at the time of top up! (I think that's why people are buying ahead of time…)

  • I'll be in JP starting end of March but will be in Korea before than. Can I activate this while I'm in Korea?

    • Yes but it won't work until your get to Japan

  • So any idea of the actual activate by date? Going in may.. and I see people talking about march.. Have left a message to CS but nothing so far

  • +2

It appears that the sale was extended until 4 Feb 2024 based on both the website and what their support team told me

    • +2

Yup, its updated on the website, I'll update the post :)

  • Can we buy multiple of this deal and stack them up?also, I’m a bit confused with what the website says and in this thread, so do we activate before we arrive in japan (I’ll be travelling from korea in april) or after we arrive in japan?

    • We downloaded, installed the eSIM(s) in Australia on our home Wi-Fi; when we got to Japan all we needed to do was let the eSIM connect for activation.

Remember to download/read the instructions carefully, e.g., turn on roaming etc if data doesn't work etc.

Also remember once installed, you can't uninstall etc, so I would do it closer to the date in case you change phones etc.

  • Looks like DEC15 and DEC10 now expired… but JAN15 and JAN10 worked…
Couldn't stack with a referral code from here though.

  • Speeds not great tbh. In the couple of days I’ve been using it, it’s never shown a 5G signal

  • Can I purchase it now and activate in mid June when I will be going to Japan?

    • yes you can, see comments above

  • Sale has been extended to 29 Feb 2024… but editing has been locked?

  • FYI, FEB15 works

  • Have an upcoming trip in October 2024. Will this esim work or should I just buy closer to the travel dates?

  • +1

Signal is poor in Niseko, ok elsewhere

  • +1

    FEB10 for existing customers

  • It seems the deal is still valid.
