    • worked for me … probably won't use it though

    • use this tool and click your own ip to see if it's on any blacklists

my residential ip address is on a couple, tried mobile data and it works fine

    • got the same error when using a disposable email address, but worked when using a free email address: [email protected]

    Or use Mounty

got the license and installed and activated. Thanks OP

  • Is there any advantage to use this software over the free Paragon NTFS version that came with portable WD and Seagate drives?

    • Haven't tried this, but I've always found Paragon to be buggy as hell. If it works well for you, I'd say just stick with it.

      • for my m1, I found the seagate version buggy .. but the Paragon NTFS v15.8.109 (WD version) has without fail for NTFS mounts on the last big sur update.

but was thinking I need/should upgrade big sur now to something more relevant to today soon and have been looking around at (more) current softwares. =P

You can't write to an NTFS drive with paragon free I believe. The paid edition is rock solid and I've been using it for 2 years. For this sort of software you want something super reliable in case of data loss

Just use macFUSE, free and open source

Back in the days I used to run serials on NTFS software (and others like iStat Pro). Now I just use open source.

I don’t have a Mac but macOS is based on FreeBSD. I use that on my server and can mount NTFS partitions with fuse. I would have thought that would be standard in macOS. Open source of course. 🤘

What is with Ozbargain and this obsession with installing unknown software just because it’s “free” when trusted free open source options exist?

Looks like this app has only been around for a matter of weeks and has basically no reputation online, yet you people are giving this app administration access to your computers 🤯

There’s already been a report of this software containing a Trojan, which the company claims is a false positive, and that may well be true, but why risk it when there’s open source alternatives that have been around for years and the source code is open for people to verify it’s safe?

Just because something is free, doesn’t mean it’s a good deal. This is one of those times.

    • That's a bit of a worry…

What is your open source recommendation please?

        See above. ⬆️

Good point mate. Upload unknown file to VirusTotal and re-check in a few days if any of the anti malware engines detect it!

      • +5

Its not a matter of whether or not the 'install file' has malware, the issue has to do with the permissions you're allowing by permitting the software on your machine.

    • I did see this, but as numerous reports by a lot of other users, it seems the same warning cannot be replicated by other users, including me.

    • Oh man, was too late to see this comment. Having trouble to delete it now.. wouldn't let me drag it into the bin.
Edit: can drag into the bin in Finder but not in Launchpad

      • Use AppCleaner

      • I managed to delete it rather easily on mine. Didn’t offer any more features compared to macfuse.

Drag from applications folder to trash and click empty bin.

You can manually mount ntfs drives with rw access on Mac. It just doesn’t do it by default. You don’t need to install anything. Any software you install for ntfs access is going to require a lot of permissions. Personally not keen to give that kind of access to a random app.

    • While you are correct, haven’t even Apple always had the disclaimer ‘use at your own risk’?

It kind of scared me off and there are ancient threads on the internet claiming it’s not perfect, which is not something one wants when it comes to file systems.

I’d prefer to use the native option… if it’s reliable.

Wait, what went wrong with MacFUSE? Do people need an alternative? Been going strong almost a decade now.

  • Why couldn't it be named "Dr Butho" instead?

Scanning the ntfs_exe executable embedded in this package shows this is a wrapper around ntfs3g_fuse. If you don't know what any of this means why are you installing it?

You are nuts if you are going to give this software effectively root access to your Mac. If you search for buhontfs on any search engine 99% of posts are from their web site and the remainder are about this "free" software. Despite claiming 200+ reviews for what appears to be their main product buhocleaner, all the articles I could find are sponsored.

From terms of use on their web site:

And yet 64 people up voted this deal. So much ignorance on Ozbargain now days.

  • +1

    Use https://osxfuse.github.io/

It’s trusted, free and open source

  • A lot of extra risk to just install what is fundamentally free software anyway. Don’t do it and use the other free methods that are clean and clear.
