Singapore Airlines Round-The-World Flights (Open Jaw) via Manchester & Houston: Ex PER, ADL, SYD, CNS, DRW, MEL, BNE from $1,809

7770

this is a bit of a niche and complicated "deal" but it could be useful for someone trying to book a round the world trip from any city Singapore Airlines flies to in Australia (PER, ADL, SYD, CNS, DRW, MEL, BNE)

this has been working for at least 6 months for me, probably longer but I found while playing around with multi-city flights that you can book a reasonably priced RTW ticket all with Singapore Airlines pretty much year round (although prices still increase in peak times). the main trick to this is the 2nd sector must always be between MAN (Manchester) and IAH (Houston).

you basically pick a destination you want to go in europe out of the following list (Manchester, London, Paris, Barcelona, Zurich, Milan, Rome, Munich, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Copenhagen). then add a segment of Manchester to Houston (find your own way to Manchester but internal europe flights are pretty cheap). then for final flight choose one of the following cities in United States back to Australia (Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston*, New York**) once again you will need transport between Houston and whatever city you choose

the price generally comes out between $2000 and 2500 even in times where booking the transatlantic flight seperately would be $1500 on its own.

*a flight from Houston back to australia will go via both MAN and SIN
**if you choose to leave from JFK or Newark the price is more expensive as there are only premium economy seats on that route, I would still class this as a reasonably good deal though.

I couldnt find anything near as good value or as flexible as this even when going the cheapest airlines possible, allowed us to book a cheap family trip visiting rellies in both US and UK.

The cheapest I found was $1809 CNS-SIN-FRA ,MAN-IAH, SFO-SIN-CNS booking on Singapore Airlines directly using this search on Google Flights

additionally you can extend stopovers in singapore by booking them as seperate segments and it doesnt appear to change the price ie (4 segment multicity, PER-SIN, SIN-FRA, MAN-IAH, SFO-SIN-PER).

you can also start from one aus city and end in a different one and it still works, it also works in either direction.

EDIT: FRA-JFK also works for the middle segment, which is probably more useful

Any work around to get cheap flight to New Delhi from SINGAPORE airlines

  • Is there a deal through South America?

This is an incredible deal post - well done hugamuga!

This is the first time I have ever bookmarked a deal post.

    Great deal, thank you!

If you're going to stay or sightsee on your RTW flights then I suggest book through pelago with shopback app, then you can add to your FF points plus discounts.
Pelago is owned by Singapore Airlines.

Found this in the shopback app:
Get up to 2 x 10% off on sign up and earn KrisFlyer miles on every booking!

    Absolutely insane find!

    @hugamuga ,

    Great find

Can we use KrisFlyer points to redeem these RTW flights ?

    • +3

RTW Award redemption does exist. It's 200k in economy, 280k in business, and 405k in first.

PointHacks article on SQ Krisflyer RTW

I'm currently trying to book for a trip in November but it's not looking good. Award availability out of North America westward for travel in J is almost non existent. Someone on AFF claims that getting a refund from Qantas is easier than this.

      • I have
a huge amount of Velocity points,
        a lot of Krisflyer points,
a significant amount with Qatar, and
a sizeable portion with United Airlines.

So, I'm trying to figure out some ways to redeem them,
because I find the points get devalued quite quickly these days.

      • I did it last year using expert flyer and flight connections but now EF doesnt work anymore. This year I'm doing a mix of paid economy and single flights mix of classes to go to Europe, south America and back either via LAX or South Africa.

You can if via Japan. I had the option of Emirates from Tokyo to London via Dubai but instead I picked ANA for direct flights

  • Is Singapore Air still good service?

how much leave do you/can you have?

      • well for most ppl in office jobs, it's usually 4 weeks a year

you didnt leave bank 3 years worth during covid?

        • well for most ppl in office jobs, it's usually 4 weeks a year

Now do the maths if you work longer than a year, or squeeze in a RTW trip in 4 weeks, or take leave without pay, or work a job that isn't in an office etc etc…

    • Shift workers at my company get 5 weeks. Then extra day before, and beg rostering for 3 extra days so 5.5 weeks :)

  • so it says europe is best in summer - anyone manage to get these dates?

  • +9

Not just singapore but most airlines can do RTW.

    We flew
    Bris to Tokyo (Qantas)
    Tokyo to London (ANA Pokemon)
Train to Paris, Strasbourg, Nuremberg, Prague
Prague to Seoul via Munich (Lufthansa)
    Seoul to Sydney (Asiana)
    Sydney to Brisbane (Qantas)

Ticket $1950 in December/Jan peak season

I could also go Emirates from Tokyo or Swiss but that has a Zurich stopover. Good if you want to add more stopovers.

    • How do you check for it, google flights and then filter by a specific airline?

      • +1

I find it’s easier to check on sky scanner. Also I was checking 6mths out which you can’t do on google.

Prices ranged from $1850 to $2200 depending in dates and which city to arrive in and ex. Cheapest I think was Helsinki and other Baltic countries.

I was actually booked from Tokyo to London on Swiss via Zurich with 24hr stopover. By sheer of luck there was a time change and I option to choose other flights so I changed to direct with Lufthansa. Also the Syd to Bris leg was at 8pm but we arrived 9am. We went on wait list for next available and managed to get one at 12pm.

All I did was use the multi city search and put in the cities I wanted to visit. I think the best was the 2 city Tokyo and Seoul stopover. It’s better to go through same city twice. We spent a week in each city.

I know closer to date of travel, the same fare was $4.5k
I think if you use skyscanner, they even find the cheapest 1 way tickets there and back.

Yes I booked myself. I think Jetabroad was the cheapest. Mind you when I entered my creditcard, it didn’t confirm and then would say prices have gone up. I did it a few more times and it confirmed. I believe it’s live ticketing. The flights showed up on my Qantas app immediately (2 legs Qantas)

    • +2

Did you book this yourself? Was it an online travel agent or direct with airline(s)?
It looks like a series of one way tickets but maybe it was a Lufthansa RTW - but it's not technically around the world.
This would be useful to know.

      • Would like to know as well. Amazing price for xmas period

        • Totally. Europe Xmas markets and the best stopovers.

    • teach me, master

    • Interesting. Not an expert at all on RTW fares but I always assumed you'd need to cross over to America at some point in the itinerary but sounds like you didn't have to.

  • @hugamuga How are you searching so easily via google flights, what filters specifically?

    • For eg, I'm searching for MUM > ZRH, MAN > IAH, JFK > NRT, NRT > DXB but it doesn't have a single Singapore Airlines flight. What am I doing wrong?

      • +2

your itinerary cant be booked as one ticket, singapore airlines does fly those routes, but it would have to be booked as multiple one way flights which would be super expensive. this deal works if you are departing from an Australian city and arriving in an Australian city

  • I am playing around with MEL > LGW, FRA > JFK, JFK > MEL. In the last leg of the trip JFK > MEL there is a stopover back to FRA, anyone figured out how to bypass this without the prices increasing?

    • +1

Try open jaw, so lax to mel. Then buy domestic flight

    • Change the date and destination to NYC so you can dig up the direct EWR/JFK-SIN flight (the world's longest commercial flights).

Note this is a minimum premium economy offering though (no cattle), but the price is still keen (c. $4k for MEL-NYC/JFK-FRA/CDG-SIN/SIN-MEL for the dates in August I was playing around with).

  • Worth using points etc to "launch" from Singapore? Will have a play..

    • I'm planning a RTW redemption from Taipei. Hardest part is looking for saver award tickets but if you're booking from the time the seats are released (around 355 days) it's fine as there's usually availability.

  • +2

Has anyone booked any tickets yet?
If yes could you please share your dates, itinerary and ticket price.
I'm scheduling a meeting with my boss to take advantage of this great deal/post.
    Thank OP

  • Where would be suggested rtw if we are looking at Mel -> rome / paris / zurich -> US -> Mel

Jus not sure about US states as we are new to US and dont mind to spend 1 wk in US before heading bk to Mel.

    Thanks ..

    • You're better placed to work this out for yourself. Randoms on OzB know nothing about your travel preferences.

  • Wondering if this is a continuing thing or a loophole that will be 'fixed' sooner rather than later?

    • after posting here unfortunately…

Just looking at some of the fare rules…

    PERMITTED 01JUN 23 THROUGH 30NOV 23 OR 14JAN 24 THROUGH
    05DEC 24 OR 06JAN 25 THROUGH 04DEC 25 ON THE FIRST
    INTERNATIONAL SECTOR.

…suggests if you want to book over the peak Xmas holiday season, you need to depart by 5 December to get this fare.

TRAVEL FROM LAST STOPOVER MUST COMMENCE NO LATER THAN 6
MONTHS AFTER DEPARTURE FROM FARE ORIGIN.

… suggests your RTW trip can't be longer than 6 months on this fare.

UNLIMITED FREE STOPOVERS PERMITTED ON THE PRICING UNIT.

UNLIMITED TRANSFERS PERMITTED ON THE PRICING UNIT
FARE BREAK AND EMBEDDED SURFACE SECTORS PERMITTED ON THE
    FARE COMPONENT.

… this is where you usually pay more for fares.

END-ON-END NOT PERMITTED. SIDE TRIPS NOT PERMITTED

… I think this is why you can't add on a trip from SIN to elsewhere in Asia and back on the way to USA/Europe without breaking the fare.

    OPEN JAWS/ROUND TRIPS/CIRCLE TRIPS
FARES MAY BE COMBINED ON A HALF ROUND TRIP BASIS
-TO FORM SINGLE OR DOUBLE OPEN JAWS ROUND TRIPS CIRCLE
    TRIPS.
    PROVIDED -
COMBINATIONS ARE WITH ANY FARE FOR CARRIER SQ IN ANY
    RULE AND TARIFF.

… I think this just means lots of delicious options.

TICKETS MUST BE ISSUED ON SQ AND MAY ONLY BE SOLD IN
    AUSTRALIA/NEW CALEDONIA

… this is why it is not available for itineraries starting outside Australia.

    • Where did you find these fare rules? I can't find it online :/

  • +1

I might be missing the point here (not unusual); but I had been searching for about a year for Melbourne to Manchester return (via Singapore), that allowed me to travel in 8 hour legs. (Really struggle with being couped up for longer than this). I really like SA; and have done the same trip with them previously; but can never avoid the 14hr leg from Singapore…

However, I have managed to book this with Emirates/Qantas for $2.300 return. Made the mistake of a longer stopover in Singapore than planned (29 hours); but that was my error. We fly in May via Singapore and Dubai; returning mid-June the same way.

Not sure if this is relevant/helpful to this post; but I thought someone else might be trying to avoid the 14 hour stretch.

  • +3

Might do a RTW trip when I get my LSL in 14 months time.

  • Thank you! That's awesome! Europe here we come!

  • Until how far in advance can you check the fare? With Google looks like it is until 31-Jan-25.

    • +2

SQ usually releases tickets 355 days in advance from memory.

  • +1

Am I doing something wrong here, played around with the dates and getting same amount or higher:
    https://www.google.com/travel/flights/search?tfs=CBwQAhotEgo…

    • that seems about right to me, still a pretty reasonable price. I managed to get lower prices on that itinerary in November

Thanks for the awesome post OP!!!!

Just booked SYD-AMS,FRA-JFK,LAX-NRT,NRT-SYD in business class for $11k per ticket in Sep/Oct. Great price for a J class fully flexible fare.

    • $11k per ticket?

This is a flex post !

      • +6

Not intended as a flex - it's not first class.

When you are old like me, economy for such a long haul is not an option and that is a great price for business. You could be paying anywhere up to $25k per ticket for a flexible business fare on that route.

    • great value!

  • -1

interesting .anyone tried a business fare ?

    • +1

      Check the comment immediately above.

  • +1

Basically we have to go to Europe and US from/to Australia ?

  • +1

    Anyone booked a ticket yet?

  • +1

Just to clarify, this is making use of the 5th Freedom rights of Singapore Airlines. 5th Freedom means an airline can fly from one country to another (that isn't their own) as long as the flight leaves, or is heading to it's base country.

So for example, Manchester -> Houston -> Singapore. Basically, they must head home after Houston. This flight will always happen. So they sell it cheaper to fill seats.
Singapore lists Tokyo, Frankfurt, Barcelona Manchester, Milan, Houston, LA, JFK as their 5th Freedom connections (and obviously connect back to Singapore itself).

Each airline has their own 5th freedom necessary legs. So look them up if the Singapore Airlines offering doesn't work for you.

*Edit - found this list of potential 5th freedom routes:
    https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/fifth-freedom-rou…

Lastly, look up the airline and airport taxes on the ITA matrix. Then chose the cheapest tax entry / exit points to make the flight as cheap as you can.

    • +2

While this does make use of 5th freedom flights, it is not the reason why these flights cheap, in this scenario these the Singapore 5th freedom flights are actually far more expensive if you were to book them separately. It's more taking advantage of the generous pricing structure on return flights to the USA and Singapore airlines allowing stopovers in the same region at little to no additional cost.

5th freedom flights vary a lot in prices and can often be more expensive than other options depending on seasons and demand.
