      • why would a lady be using a penis enlargement cream….?

    • You’ve managed to elicit some weird and perverse reply comments with this one.

      30-pin USB Cable model?

  • +1

Shame it doesn't have balanced output

    • +5

      Almost 3x the price.

        • +2

To get 256GB you'd either need a touch 7th gen though or a classic with the storage swapped out. Don't think either of those are that cheap. In fact last I checked, classics were up precisely due to the fact that Apple stopped making them.

        • +4

Nope. You don't know what you're talking about. Good luck finding a working iPod for <$100. For that price, you'll get a black spot Nano or Classic with battery bulge. Refurbed units with SSDs are $300ish.

    • This uses bluetooth and seems to have a DAP (I think it's implied) built into it

      • +3

        DAC?

  • +16

Hmmm, go lossless, use Bluetooth. Okay.

    • -4

Actually the latest version of Bluetooth has supported lossless audio for a while. Even AirPods support lossless now.

      • +2

I don't think bluetooth has the bandwidth to support lossless actually. Airpods Pros 2 support lossless only when used with vision pro, but thats over a proprietary protocol, not bluetooth.

        • I think aptX HD works by encoding the audio signal into a form that is even more compressed than uncompressed CD quality audio, but changed encoding or not it's still lossless isn't it?

        • -2

My Sony Xperia supposedly does lossless to my 1000MX4's, but they're too shitty to notice a difference anyway, same with Airpod Pro 2.

      • +11

There are lossless audio formats for saving, but its still not lossless to the headphones, aptX and LDAC are fairly transparent.

But yes honestly bluetooth headphones unless you are using some monitors are always going to be lossy. Just insufficent bitrate to handle it.

I have a hibi r2 pro saber myself. I have all my audio, i like not chewing through my phone battery, i like not having data drop out, i like playing my own versions of albums and not some of the "radio edits" that spotify have, and also not paying a monthly premium to pay to listen to my music.

As for bluetooth, i like not getting tangled in the cord. When you have a bag for work and sitting on a train cords are a pain.

The only thing about higher bitrate LDAC is that it can drop out easily if there are to many other bluetooth headphones around like on trains some days.

        • +1

          Thanks for the use cases

        • I don't know about LDAC, but APT-X lossless is bit-for-bit the same as it's more like a ZIP than standard compression. I also don't know what this unit supports.

The Verge: There’s still some compression at work here to bring 1.4Mbps CD-quality audio down to the 1Mbps bit-rate that aptX Lossless is capable of transmitting. But the difference here is that the compression being used shouldn’t result in any loss of data, and is “bit-for-bit” exact. “After it’s uncompressed it’s exactly the same as the original,” Nura CEO Luke Campbell says, “Think of a ZIP file. It gets smaller, but it’s exactly what it was when it comes out.”

          • @ronafios: This device does not support qualcomms aptx lossless standard, only aptx adaptive and below.

        • The only thing about higher bitrate LDAC is that it can drop out easily if there are to many other bluetooth headphones around like on trains some days.

This sometimes gets me at home, with the phone just on the desk next to me (Sony phone + Sony headphones). I don't bother with LDAC anymore.

    • +3

For those who missed it, you still get a minijack output for your headphones/line out there.

    • This becomes a Bluetooth receiver if that helps. So you can have your lossless files through your wires headphones but if you need a quick blast of audiobook you can pair it to your phone just like any other Bluetooth headphones

  • +5

Curious.. why don't you just use your phone?

Interested by trying to determine using this existing phone.

    • +3

I had something similar from China with a high power AMP to power hard to drive wired headphone.
I don't see why anyone would want to use bluetooth on something like this though.

      • +1

You use it to receive Bluetooth from, say, your phone and drive your wired headphones from its amp

    • +3

I do use one of those, but my reason was that leaving my phone at the party made it impossible for me to leave to get ice in seven-elevens. I had better tie an MP3 player to the audio system in the same room. In fact, I leave it in the old A/C controller wall mount, as my A/C is now controlled with a smartphone.

    • I’m thinking of getting one for one of my kids who is too young for a phone. Even with no sim, they’ll spend all day mucking around with the camera and get stuck in other apps and settings. But with a mp3 player, they can just play music, as intended 🙂

    • +14

Can you seriously not think of a single reason to own a standalone MP3 player?

    • +3

You can stream any song in the world on your phone with spotify/apple music….

Audio quality when compared to those two.

      • -6

What's wrong with the audio quality? Sounds perfectly fine on my bose headphones.

        • +10

Hi res audio will sound better on a standalone DAP. I don't know about this model in particular, but generally they'll sound objectively better than a phone with a streaming service.

Don't go down the rabbit hole if you're happy with what you've got though

          • +6

@Orion au: Seriously good advice from Orion au. Ignorance is bliss.

          • +1

@Orion au: Even so, chifi iems are a cheap way to dip a toe in. For under $50 I can make my AirPod pros and Bose headphones sound like absolute crap, even with Spotify

        • +2

For 99.99% of the population, a phone and Spotify/Apple Music paired with a high quality headphone is fine.

Something like this is catered to that 0.01%, who ‘notice’ the difference of lossless. My neighbour is an audiophile, he spent 10k plus on his home theatre, I use a high end sound bar. I barely notice a difference to justify 7-8x the price. But he does.

          • @tightm8:

I barely notice a difference to justify 7-8x the price. But he does.

So who's winning here? Imagine spending $10k on audio gear and still not being happy…

This is the problem with the audiophile types. They literally pay lots of money to be upset that their setup is never quite good enough, and everywhere they go they complain about how crap everyone else's sound system is. It is a life of misery. Don't be that guy.

            • +1

@1st-Amendment: It's fun. It does hurt, constantly being aware that what you're listening to can be better, but the moments when stuff comes together perfectly are bliss.

            • +1

@1st-Amendment: On the other hand, everyone has their niche. Serious cyclists spend a lot on their gear, divers too. Astronomy is an expensive hobby. Fishing can be too if you’re serious (especially with boat etc). And on and on 🙂

          • +1

@tightm8: I once stopped by a random bar in a small Japanese city to kill a hour sipping whiskey and scrolling instagram, not knowing that the owner was a vintage audiophile with an insane setup. Soon he was showing it all off and asking me to choose some records.

Centrepiece of the room was a pair of speakers that cost ~$50k back in the 70s. They were in this enormous unit that looked like a wide desk, and for a moment I thought he was inviting me to sit at this desk to take in the entire wall of other speakers and equipment around it.

They sounded pretty great. Way better than my soundbar anyway

I heard Steve Jobs is going to be releasing a new mp3 product soon.

Given that Napster is now gone, I'm not sure this new format will take off. HMV and Sanity music are too big to compete with.

    • +9

Personally, I'll be checking it out at Brash's.

  • +2

Why dont they come with a digital radio?

  • -1

mp3 can never be truly Hi-Fi, since it’s lossy.

    • +1

It also has fixed frame length so it doesn't support gapless audio. Being a huge fan of progressive rock since 1971 this is important to me but I appreciate it will have negligible impact for others. For those two reasons I ripped everything to FLAC when it became available.

    • It supports lossless codecs i.e. FLAC

  • what sorta software does it come with to copyfiles ect. and get meta data?

    • +1

I think you'd need to add the metadata to your media before copying it across to the device. MusicBrainz Picard is awesome for this.

    • It comes with some app to create playlists. I just use some freeware file sync app to copy files to/from it. The stuff I put on it doesn't change often. And it supports cards bigger than what's specified.

But all my files are neatly metadata-d and cover-arted etc so I only need to put them on there

  • +1

If I have iPod classics late 2009, upgrade it to ssd and use Rockbox firmware better or just get this?

    • i have a few SSD upgraded ipod minis from circa 2005 i use for gym, biking, walking dogs etc.. they sound great with just 320kpbs mp3 files and half decent IEMs, the DAC in these were top notch and still hold up.

they were designed to do just one thing….and do it well.

      • Agree on that, I have my classic sitting around doing nothing. Probably will be doing this project soon

    • +1

I don't think you can easily upgrade to SSD and use Rockbox at the same time. The prevalent controller for the SSD isn't compatible with Rockbox.

      • Okay that is good to know, I got to do more research. Thank you 🙏🏽

      • True I've tried several times and failed. Now I understand.

  • no usb c charging kills it for me.

  • Question, why would someone not get this instead?

    • +1

      Better dac?

    • +2

Some people don't want to use touchscreens

My DAP is physical controls only, I can use it when it is a pocket, clipped to a sleeve, fallen down in between my leg and the side of the chair. Having to physically pick it up and look at it every time I want to adjust something would be a retrograde step.

  • I'm on the fence between this one and the F28 - can anyone weigh in?

    • +3

The F28 supports USB-C charging, while the F20 is Micro USB. Can't comment on other features since I haven't used the F20.

The scroll wheel is great, but it won't work if the device is locked 🤦🏽‍♂️ Can't fault audio quality, and file support.

I'd recommend the F28 if it's not too expensive compared to the F20.

      • Thanks mate, didn't realise that on the USB-C so thanks for calling out. The extra storage capacity on the F28 is appealing too, I've only just started (re)-collecting FLACs and I'm already at 100GB…

What cans/IEMs do you power the F28 with?

  • +1

Thought this was a Teenage Engineering deal at first glance

  • Good god I would have killed to have this in 2006.

Tempted to get one just to relive the glory days of stick mp3/mp4 players.

    • Using Rockbox on a Sansa player was the pinnacle of that era for me.

      • Ever try the Sansa e250 Media player?

  • +1

I would have been interested in this product a few years back.

But Apple Music now has the majority of the their catalogue in Lossless and what's even better heaps of tracks are available in Hi-def Lossless, eg. 24bit 192 kHz.

When I pair my phone with a USB-C DAC/Headphone Amp, its all I need.

  • where are people downloading their mp3s from?

    • +1

      mp3million dot com….

    • +1

Dunno what you're talking about. I, like everyone else, definately am using Spotify, Apple Music, or other legal streaming services to listen to my music.

On a completely different topic, isn't it infuriating when people, discussing certain topics, asking simple questions, on certain websites, Reddit for example, get all snarky and are like USE THE MEGATHREAD in all caps? I mean, perhaps it's good advice, I certainly wouldn't know anything about that. But if you google it, you'll find that said snarkiness I'm sure, and it definately is funny to read, makes me laugh out loud like "haaarrr haaarrr haaarrr", ya know?

    • get opus files fron youtube
