  • Anyone know where to get a replacement power supply for these?

    • +2

Just takes normal dell power supply like this one

      • Is there a scope of RAM upgrade? is this good enough for a proxmox hosting Nextcloud server for me?

        • +2

Depends what Nextcloud plugins you want running on it, I've got Proxmox and 12gb of ram on mine

It's just an x86 box so if a J5005 will run what you want, this box will. If I was using Nextcloud for photos and needed thumbnail generation, etc, I would get something with more beef though - SFF refurbs from @untech aren't much more and regularly go on sale

        • +2

I believe 8GB is already max out for the J5005.

          • +2

            @Richardc: Both my J4105 and J5005 ones have 12gb in them :)

          • @Richardc: @bdl @TaurusHead @Richardc

I got a couple of these the other week. They seem to do just fine with 32GB in them :)

            https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/7ccc9fd0-c501-45a4-99ae-6caad6…

The m.2 slot with the m.2 sata in it is keyed to also take nvme and it fits but alas, it doesn't work.

There may be some pcb traces you can bodge-wire to get nvme working in that slot but I haven't investigated.

        • +5

dont waste resources on proxmox with a small box like this. go bare debian + docker for the best chance of stuff actually running nicely :)

          • +2

@Leho: not sure why you got begged as it makes sense given the context of RAM heavy softwares.

            • @TaurusHead: ozbargain is a silly place full of strange people 🙄

            • +1

@TaurusHead: Didn’t neg. But I’m guessing the people installing Proxmox are partially doing so as a learning activity.

Plus Proxmox VM has many other advantages, VLAN support, snapshot backups…

              • @PainToad: Yes, I want to run everything on Proxmox predominantly for learnings without touching some of the servers i.e. Nextcloud, Ubuntu etc. running there with no downtime.
@Leho suggested Debian, I tried it on multiple occasions but I found that rather heavier or seeking more commands for the tasks that can be done in fewer when it comes to Ubuntu server so I'd rather recommend that when you get a chance.

    • I think it uses a common Dell 65W supply, which is way overkill.
But it is one of the "smart" ones. It will run slower if a generic supply is used, which may be OK for you. Nominally 19.5V, but probably works fine on 12V.

Yeah I got three of the celery ones on ebay for $41 each and one was shipped with a HP 90w, memtest shows it not slowing down however testing with linux shows that the performance is capped around 1ghz since it can't see the Dell IC on the HP psu :( (FU DELL)

untech on ebay said the above PSU doesn't work but I trust our ozb rep more :)

        • +2

          @bdl up-voted for "celery ones"

  • +4

seems better than a Pi4, but may not beat a pi5
what is the idel wattage number.

using a N100 for home server and consume about 7w idle

  • +1

Handy boxes, but eMMC performance is nothing like an SSD.

    • +3

these never shipped with eMMC so I think the 64gb will be a m2 sata (see https://www.delltechnologies.com/asset/en-gb/products/thin-c…)

Last time they were on sale they said eMMC but were in fact m2 sata SSDs.

      • +2

Yes, correct. Just fixed it now.

      • +1

Your link also suggests there are a number of usb 3.2 g2 ports. If that’s true, that’s quite impressive.

        • Not true. They're all gen 1 at 5Gbps.

I have one of these from a previous deal on ozb.

these are awesome even as a day to day office/email/YouTube machine.

I installed a 256GB SATA SSD M.2 (these do not take nvme drives)

Theyre fanless, barely goes above 45c during load.

I have this running Plex on windows 11 with sonarr, Radarr, other apps, VPN etc. it absolutely doesn't break a sweat even with 4-5 people watching cocurrently.

    would recommend/10.

EDIT: CPU idle is sometimes less than 1W. During playback of Plex and downloading, maybe 2.5W. I suspect the system would barely pull 10W

  • Can I install regular windows 10 on it from bootable USB or what is the recommended OS to install on it?

    • +6

Yes you can, run whatever you are comfortable with - it's just an x86 box

Don't forget to update your bios https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-au/drivers/driversdetai…

FWIW these also take 2133 ram, and I've had issues with them taking dual rank 8gb modules - would only take one of them.

      • +1

        Thanks Bought one

      • Eh? The BIOS there is only available as a Windows exe.

        • +2

Boot with Hirens PE and update via that

          https://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

I found I couldn't use the in-built bios flasher as the shipped version was too old to support the latest bios update

        • USB FAT32/MBR Place file at root. F12 at startup > Bios Update. Very Easy for me, I did it just now!

          • @Evostar: Didn't work on my older bios revisions

        • I read somewhere that you can also use fwupdmgr to do the firmware update from Ubuntu.

    • +1

I usually use Rocky as server and Debian as desktop

    • +3

I built a small windows machine for my Son to learn on.

  • +15

I bought this last time. Using it for HA.
The USB C port in the front supports display out , I only found out after spending money to the display cable.

    • +4

Thanks, I think you just save me 10 dollars.

  • Does anyone know if this would be up to the task of game streaming through moonlight??

    • +2

It has Intel UHD Graphics 605 which can decode H264 and H265, wouldn't want to try 4K60 or anything like that but it may be possible to do 1080p60

      • Cool, thanks! I'll give it a go! :)

  • +1

Would this be powerful enough to run Home Assistant?

    • The comment 2 above yours.

    • +6

If a Pi can do it, this can (provided the software you want is not ARM-only)

If you have no idea about linux, install dietpi.com and use their menus to help you install what you want

      • +3

        +1 for dietpi!

      • +1

        Awesome, thank you!
        Totally nabbed one. :)

All good, I'm very comfortable working in Linux.

      • will try dietpi

      • Thank you for suggesting dietpi, am writing this via Firefox and using LXDE desktop :D

Now, I have two monitors plugged in but only one is displaying the desktop, any tips on how to get dual monitor setup to work?

    • +2

My decent sized Home Assistant instance only uses 2% CPU and 0.8 GB RAM on this Thin Client.

    • +2

It’s perfect for it. I picked one up from the last deal. I run HAOS as well as homebridge.

It’s feels x10 snappier than the pi4 8GB it replaced.

      • I think I she pi3, should do wonders for me then! Thanks.

        What is HAOS btw?

        • +2

          https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/

its the full version of Home Assistant as a pre built Operating System.

I provided some info on the link above.

I only had the core version on my Pi. but wanted to use the add-on store with the full HA OS

    • Yes. I bought one last time and installed HASSOS on it. Works great!

    • yes, got adguard and unbound running on it as well.. just ordered another one as backup ubuntu box - might try dietpi first like above comment

    • Yes, I gave 2 to a friend to run HA, I run HA on the previous 5060 model that is much slower.

  • How much worse would this be compared to a HP Elitedesk G3 Mini i5-6500T?

  • any good for watching 4k / 1080 ?

Ive got time for popcorn in my loungeroom :)

    • +5

As long as your video playback app of choice supports Intel QuickSync/hardware acceleration, the J5005 CPU will do UHD HEVC 10bit decoding nice and smooth. It'll even encode too.

  • How quiet are these?

    • +1

      Very - they're fanless.

I bought one last time - intention was to use it in an industrial automation project to replace an old broken HMI.

Unfortunately there's no legacy boot - only UEFI. Unlikely to bother most but it stuffed up my use case.

Oh well, might put HA on it and retire my old NUC.

  • Windows 11 supported?

  • M.2 2230 WLAN socket best way to add Wifi?

    • Yes, AX200 worked fine for me (had one laying around)

  • +4

A previous thread for research purposes.

  • I think it might be time to jump into HA.

        Horse archery

        • I KNEW IT

  • is there any way to turn this into a pfsense router?

    • Bunch of threads on Reddit regarding this model - all signs point to yes.

M2 WiFi card that will take a NIC adapter and all

      • Does that mean one ethernet and 1 wifi card would do. Or PFsense required 2 ethernet port.

    • Yes, you can get a m.2 (A+E key) NIC card - which works.
I ordered the Intel one & a Realtek one.

Unfortunately, the intel chip one fits the m.2 slot - but the card dimension is little more wide to fit in the chasis.
The el-cheapo Realtek chipset one fits perfectly.

        • Yes. Pls note that the RJ45 doesn't fit exactly on the back - I have just kept it dangling outside for now.
AFAIK, there is a 3d print design available which would make it neat.

      • What is the width of the Intel that doesn't fit please? I've got one on order; may have to swap to an rtl!

    • Will be using one for opnsense , once I get a second ethernet port installed.

    • I've just bought one to run OPNsense per https://thecloudadmin.nl/blog/2021/10/27/opnsense-and-wyse-5…

Sadly though, from eBay yesterday - $5 less but only 4Gb ram and a 16Gb storage :(

    • Cordless drill

But I would suggest going with another unit with intel lan nics if you're going to use pf or opn

    Hi @untech,
does it come with 1 8gb sodimm or 2x4gb sodimms? is the ram 2400mhz? Thanks

    • I would also like to know :D

    • Not sure about memory size but this comment from a previous deal suggests 2400mhz ram only. Any higher and it may not start.

      • Lower I would assume would be ok. I tried 2666 and 3200 without luck

    • +1

most likely 2400 but mine work with 2133 and mixed 2133/2400

  • +1

bought one- now what the hell do I do with it lol?!! gonna try set up a nas/Home Assistant - no idea where to start- any hints please?

    • +2
