            • @UFO: Did you change the display to show the Hybrid system (engine/battery/electric motors) or were you just measuring off of when it went into EV Mode?

If the latter, thats not how the hybrids really work. They mostly save fuel by supplementing the petrol engine when under load and the start/stop function. The EV Mode is a bit of a gimmick and hardly comes on in the larger hybrids unless youre really babying them.

            • @UFO:

the hybrid DID NOT kick in during hwy use at all

Not many people know about the engines on Toyota hybrids. They are different than normal engine where they use Atkinson cycle and not the normal Otto cycle. The most efficient band for Atkinson cycle engine is at it high cruising RPMs. The motor and battery system act as auxiliary system to compensate the drawback of this engine.

I still went through a tank and a half and noticed no difference to a prior rental non-hybrid Kluger I did the trip in earlier in the year.

This doesn't tell you anything. How big was the tank?

              • @Indomietable: The actual tank size is irrelevant, as both the hybrid and non-hybrid versions have the same size.
My comparison between the two was valid because I did virtually the same trip in km in two Klugers.

                • -1

                  @UFO:

hybrid and non-hybrid versions have the same size.

Incorrect. Fuel tank on the Kluger hybrid ( AXUH78HR ) is slightly smaller than the normal Kluger ( GSU75R )

                  • @Indomietable: jesus mate, I bet you're awesome at parties!

                    3 LITRES.

You made me waste my time researching your argument for 3L? The Hybrid has a 65L tank, and the ICE has 68L.
Considering I noticed NO difference to fuel consumption between the two models, your point on fuel tank size is completely useless. My original point of course still stands… and you're just wasting people's time. 1700km round trip and I correctly stated NO DIFFERENCE TO FUEL USE, and yet you're resting your hat on a 3L difference in fuel tank size? Desperate semantics. Someone really hates to be told they are wrong!

BTW it's spelt "Indomitable". Invincible my foot :).

Have a good one Mr Invincible ;).

                    • @UFO: You said :

hybrid and non-hybrid versions have the same size

                      then

The Hybrid has a 65L tank, and the ICE has 68L

See!! Never blindly trust what you think

You made me waste my time researching …

I made you see the truth

I noticed NO difference to fuel consumption

While feelings are real experiences, they don't necessarily reflect reality. When trying to establish a fact, it's crucial to avoid relying on "feelings" as they are subjective and can often be misleading, meaning you should base your conclusions on objective evidence rather than personal emotions.
If you do another research with recorded numbers - you'll find evidence and proof that the hybrid is more economical than the normal.

Also Kluger is the worst pick when comparing highway fuel consumption on the hybrid vs petrol. Kluger's size/drag coefficient is not favourable for high speed. Plus, the v6 on the petrol is highly tuned for highway driving.

If you look at Camry Hybrid (AXVH70R), you'll find that it's more efficient on the Highway with the advertised figure :
                      City:4.9L/100 & Hwy: 4.7L/100

PS: Indomie is an instant noodle brand and I'm more than happy to be proven wrong.

        • I have a hybrid (Accord) and my fuel economy doesn't change whether I do highway or city. In fact sometimes it's even slightly better on the highway (maybe 0.1-0.2L)

          • +4

@Mr Bob Dobalina: Mondo, That makes no scientific sense but this day and age I accept that each person seems to live in their own reality and physics.

    • with 120,000 on them… over a massive 40% depreciation in such a small timeframe..

It's not timeframe, it's use. 120,000km in 3-4 years is excessive. Of course no-one is paying top dollar for a machine that is clearly well used.

      These Haval's are cheap

      What is TCO…

all for 10K less than a yaris

Or if TCO is your primary concern, buy a near new Yaris for $18k and sell it 4 years later for $15k. Have you ever heard of anyone buying a second hand Haval? You buy that you are stuck with it for life.

    • -1

Huh? Camry hybrids were in no way 42k back in 2019/20. 2020 price for Ascent hybrid was $31,790.

    • +2

I say this as someone who bought an MG vehicle a month ago. You can't compare any car to a Toyota. There is a reason why they are expensive and hard to get. You don't get all the bells and whistles but they're low maintenance and don't give you any headaches for the next 20 years of owning them.

Hopefully my MG will be the same but chances are it won't be. But I took the risk because I wanted an EV and it looked like the best value at the time

    • @ Mortgagetightass
"over a massive 40% depreciation in such a small timeframe.."
if 10% depreciation per year (including the first year) is massive depreciation, I'd like to know what you're comparing it to…. gold bars?

      • Our Delica has probably dropped about 40%.

We have had it for over 15 years though so cant complain!

    • You clearly haven't seen the used car market in a significant amount of time. These Camry's hold their value ridiculously well.

      Yes, a hybrid uses both

    • If you use both the electricity ignites the petrol.

Unlike other western countries, the fact that we have CHAFTA is a massive W.

As China invests more and more into their automotive industries we'll see better and higher quality cars as the years pass.

    • +3

But they've been in market for so long already. (I'm not a Chinese car hater. Just aware they haven't made the strides like those of Hyundai even after being in the market for so long)

      • -2

Time in market vs Hyundai? Not sure if serious.

    • +18

It wasn’t too long ago Japanese and Korean small cars were selling under and around 20K , they got a little bit greedy in the last 10-15years and left the door open to be undercut by other low cost manufacturers.
Really you could see it coming from a mile away.
In a world where business practices are fairly transparent and public companies must report profits to shareholders it’s a matter of time before they are out manoeuvred by a country that’s lowering costs - be it wages , robots , scale and efficiency of logistics and supply chains and can pivot the whole society to react to market needs.

    • +2

*jese christ how are the euros and koreans/japanese so expensive??

      There fixed it.

      • +1

Yeah actually thats fair, car prices have gotten pretty ridiculous ever since covid.

    • +1

You been conditioned to pay exorbitant prices for cars.

Time to wake up and smell the coffee.

    • -3

Because they're junk. I just drove past one of the MGs with it's bonnet up on the side of the road yesterday. Looked like it was about 2-3 years old.

      • +1

One. Saw a BMW on the side of the road the other day as well.

I have a Jolion. Apart from some horrible tech and lacklustre gear box it is fine.

        • But tech and gear box make up a major percentage of user experience.

Having owned/own Hyundai's from different decades and driving the work LDVs there are huge differences in overall quality and finish. Not to mention temperamental quirks with the LDV

    • +1

The real question is, how are other cars so expensive?

Toyota Corolla $18K aud in China, $35 in AU
CHR $28k AUD in China, $55k in AU.
      …..
Yet this price still cannot stop Toyota's share in China from falling rapidly.

      • It could be a different car in china.

  • Can any mechanics offer an insight into the reliability of the 1.5L turbo engine?

    • +16

      yes

    • +1

      That's hard to say.

Warranty would keep these in dealers workshops rather than independents.

I'm a bit sceptical of small engine plus turbo for something like this or maybe that's just ecoboost PTSD

    • +2

As a very general rule, if you stress a small displacement motor with by turbo charging, you get higher output over a shorter lifespan.
Would make sure I understood the limitations of the warranty very well.

    • +6

Honestly, I'd be more concerned about the Chinese Dual clutch transmission.

Yeah, they could stuff up a 4cyl internal combustion engine, but they've been mainstream for decades, I'm sure they could steal from plenty of half decent designs to come up with something reasonably reliable.

Dual clutch transmissions have not been anywhere near mainstream for that length of time and even the good ones don't always have the best name for reliability.

      • That’s plenty fair, I just can’t imagine why they would put a DCT on one of these though. More parts = higher price one would assume. Maybe a torque converter wasn’t sporty enough to match the motor? 😂

        • Yeah I think it's stupid too.

The only reason I can think of is DCT are actually slightly more fuel efficient than a standard auto as they are mechanically coupled when in gear not hydraulic. So maybe it's to eek out another 2% fuel efficiency… Which is something car manufacturers do these days to try and meet their various targets.

      • Id rather dct than cvt!

        • Probably not from a reliability standpoint in a cheap Chinese car…

          • @Binchicken22: Yeah I dunno

If they are like the ford ones they will fail within warranty lol

Its a shame its not a wet clutch like the h6

We have a mondeo with wet clutch dct and its been flawless (330ks on the car now)

            • @thirtysixd: Focus had a dry clutch. We all know how that went.

      • It's ok, there are still plenty out there.

      • Having a few of the breed, I could probably let you have an AU for a cheap price. Just a couple of things to hammer/ sort out and she's good to go!

        • The AU has an Intech, not a Barra.

  • +5

Great car and great quality (far better than an overpriced Toyota).
