Telstra $30 Prepaid Starter Kit for $10 at Woolworths until Tue 8 Jan / Auspost until Sun 27 Jan

860

Edit 2: This offer also available at DSE from Sat 05 Jan until Mon 21 Jan according to page 5 of upcoming catalogue, specifies same type of sims as the Woolies deal.

Edit: also available at Auspost until Sun 27 Jan assuming your local Auspost trades on a Sunday (credit to ruraro) and also BP from Thu 10 Jan until ? (credit to bundy23).

Woolies deal specifies it includes standard, micro and nano sim kits, not sure about BP. Auspost deal only applies to standard sims, other sims will scan at $30 (credit to bdl).

Some things to note from previous deals:

If you buy the wrong sim size or the sim you want is out of stock, you can swap your sim at a Telstra shop but it may be a bit tricky / time consuming.

The $30 credit is tied to the sim i.e. it doesn't come as a separate recharge voucher.

If you call Telstra and say you're activating it for an iPad then you'll get 3GB of data for 30 days.

It will be good if they have stock

Edit: sorry misread the title. Woolworths will be fine. It's Big W that always has issues with availability.

  • I bought some last time around and have only got one left. I just wish you could port the number from one card to the next. Have to go out, buy a heap of $2 sims from Optus, port it over and then port it back… anyone know a quicker way?? that would be awesome! Hope there isnt a limit i can buy as some people have said in previous listed deals…

    • It does state a limit of one per customer (except if you're in SA go nuts ;) ), how strictly they enforce it would depend on who's serving you.

    • hey man what benefits of the $2 porting do u get .. i have always wondered how it works exactly but never understood it. Can u get heeps of credit for cheap $2 sim card uses or what? how do u do it?

      • +1

He wants to keep his number. Thats why hes constantly poting or re-porting.

        • Stay on Telstra and use creditme2u.

    • creditme2u ?

  • About time even though I do have several collected on my shelf. Good find OP, heh..if I use my DSE/wishcard I may just buy another at $9. +A reliable source as well, unlike big w.

  • what sims does ipad 4 use?

    • +1

Micro SIM. You can just get a normal SIM and cut it up yourself. Or, if you don't have a cutter, take the SIM to a Telstra shop and they'll exchange it for a micro SIM (at no cost).

      • I thought OP mentioned it could be tricky and time consuming for SIM swap at Telstra Shop.

        • +1

It is a problem going to a telstra store.

          Some staff domt kmowthe policy.

  • +4

That's a nice price, I only managed to snag it for $15 the other week.

I was happily surprised to find out you can spend the $30 credit (I chose the "I want a bit of everything" cap) on these things called "plus packs", so for $20 of your credit, you can get 700mb extra data :) Not too bad for Telstra, who aren't known for being very cheap at all (obviously vaya/etc are cheaper, but no provider truly provides the coverage of Telstra).

Just a pro-tip that I found out the hard way, DON'T spend all the $30 on plus packs, because you need at least some credit to use voicemail (and I assume some other services). I missed an important message because I couldn't call voicemail, and I didn't really want to recharge a few days after having done just that.

(@marked as rep, I work at woolies (just at store level, lol), I guess I have to declare it. Also so they don't come get me - everything I say is my own opinion and not that of woolworths)

    • also don't forget that you can spend the credit to purchase apps from Android Play Store

  • Can we use this with any 3G Tablet (Samsung)? Reading the posts above the only thing we need to do is call the Telstra CS and mention that we would be using that for Ipad….correct?

    • Yes

  • get the ipad version of the SIM so you dont even need to call Telstra.
Then get a SIM adapter from ebay for $1.99 !

    You're set.

    • I thought we needed to call to activate the SIM?

        • This is what Telstra tell me …

If you use your iPad SIM in any other device, you will be automatically charged based on your most recent recharge denomination and you will retain your existing recharge expiry period until you recharge again.

So does that mean a normal SIM will not be able to enjoy 3GB data?

  • probably gonna sold out by the time my bro get this tmr ……….

    • +2

      Starts 2/1/13.

      • Might still sell out early.

  • Can anyone confirm that its easy to get the 3GB without actually owning an iPad? Do they require any iPad related info when registering?
Is it correct, as geek7899 states above, that the 3GB is automatically applied if you get the micro Sim?

    • I am currently using one :)

Have used it in a USB modem, and in my Android phone via tethering. Going fine.

Having said that, I have read here and on WP, that if they find out its not being used in an iPad, they can stop you.

What exactly do they do to stop you, we don't know yet.

      • Thanks geek7899, so did you call up to register and BS that you have an iPad or just go with the micro sim?

        • +1

Did it online as I said. Dont need to talk to anyone.
But to do that, you need to make sure you buy the iPad micro SIM starter kit.
If you end up buying anything other than the iPad kit, you will have to talk to them, which I wanna avoid.

        • +1

OK gotcha, so there are iPad specific starter packs, right will try to grab one of those. Thx.

        • .

        • I hope we need not to do the step 3 in case we are using the sim for non-ipad tablet..

          Step 3. Register your iPad

Register, set up and sync your iPad by following the on-screen instructions. Your service will be ready to use once the activation process is complete.

        • Thanks Daver, I haven't seen those iPad specific ones before - they definitely sell that type at Woolies?

        • +2

DSE has it. The packaging is white colour. Not sure it will price match Wollie though.

        • +1

geek, did you buy yours at Woollies? My local has none of those white iPad starter packs but no worries with the standard micro SIM ones.

        • I bought mine from Telstra online. It was the micro Sim. 50% off for $15. But this is a better deal obviously.

        • Supposing someday Mr. 850 MHz-band denies me of using up my small bank of 3gb Micro/standard sim cards the worst is they become Value Packs on Encore or somesuch, until I eventually transfer all traffic to a super competitive 2100 MHz band — where the future of 3G $2-$1 per GB looks more imminent (if not already happening). Sheesh…all this hustlin' over mere radio waves. ;)

  • besides getting the ipad specific starter pack, you'll need a sim adapter which go for a couple of bucks on ebay, once thats done your all set.

    • Or use scissors.

  • Not to be outdone Optus Woolworths mobile' deal via petrol terminates in the next day or so, Dec 30. It gave one 5gb x45d for approx $10 when you have your EDR (fuel discount) card in order - and whacks on 4-7hrs voice each card for a bonus. My receipt to study the structure, but in essence ($27.88 - $15.72) * .9 = 10.5372617 Australian dollars.

    ULP Caltex/Woolworths Price as at 28/12/12 3:45 PM =133.7

  • Does anyone know if its possible to use this to offset the cost of a higher plan. What I would like to do is use this towards getting the $180 365 data pack, bringing the total cost for me to $160. I don't use much data so this is my best option. Still saving $20 if it's possible.

    • No. You will still need to spend the money to activate a plan. You can transfer credit using CreditMe2U to extend the expiry by 14 days (from the date of transfer).

  • Also good for MOG / BigpondMusic vouchers…

  • and google play too!

  • +1

That's a shame it cant be used as a separate voucher :(

  • Not sure if this has been previously answered, if so please accept my apologies!
However could I possibly buy 12 of these packs to last me over a year? I would have to activate them every 30 days I would assume but to save $50 bucks it is worth it!

I currently have the 365 day plan (with my Ipad2) at 12g with still 10G remaining and it expires tomorrow…

Not happy about the price hike on the 12g/ $180 as their network has deteriorated a lot over the last 6 months but I still realise Telstra have the best 3G.

    • It is possible, you have to activate it every month as you have said. You dont have to buy all 12 as this deal comes every month or so.

  • Telstra got the best mobile signal in rural area. I already get all my family member switched to Telstra already.

    • Why the neg? It's essentially true

BP are running the same promo from January 10th so if you miss out there's a back-up option available.

My credit with amaysim runs out early january and I'm lucky to get any reception at home with them so have to swap over then anyway.

Can anyone confirm if I get 10 of these plus 10 x $2 sims for optus/amaysim/vodafone etc. I can just port the number over when I run out of credit then port it back with my new $30's of credit with telstra?

I was dreading moving back to telstra but if this is possible it won't be anywhere near as painful as expected.

    • BP are running the same promo from January 10th so if you miss out there's a back-up option available.

      Link??

won't be anywhere near as painful as expected.

Shuttling between Telstra and Optus EVERY MONTH for a year and hoping nothing goes wrong inbetween !!
      Good luck with that…

  • No link, I just work for BP and have seen the upcoming promos. This one stood out as it starts the same week that I'd planned on moving to Telstra.

    • So do you know of BP sells the iPad specific starter pack (the white packaged one)

      • Highly Unlikely.

    • Thanks, added to description :) Do you know when the BP offer expires?

  • Are any of you guys activating for ipad still getting $30 actual credit and 3gb of data?

Have been able to get both from march till november this year.
Also they are cracking down on transferring the bonus data now.

All i need now is telstra to allow the use of prepaid credit to pay for goods on their online store.

  • how long do the credit last for?

do they have 1 year like voda?

    • Yes, if yiou select the 12month plan at Activation.

      • Okgo, are you able to select 12month plan at Activation for the 'phone' starter kit or 'ipad' starter kit? or either.

  • How do I use this sim card but keep my current telstra mobile number?

    • You cant. You have to port out to a different provider, then port it back to Telstra

      • If your current number is a Telstra prepaid, use creditme2u.

  • I bought two of $30 micro-sim kit from woolworths QV today morning for $10 each.

  • Picked up 4 micro-SIM kits for $10 each at Belconnen Woolies this morning. Thanks OP.

Australia post are doing the same deal till 27th of January. See last page of their latest catalog: http://catalogue.auspost.com.au/portal/dynamiccatalogue?Cata…

    • Great find… And it is for longer

    • Thanks, added to description :)

  • Can anyone confirm they got 3GB data with the pack when activated for tablet, and not 700mb indicated on Telstra website ?

    • You only get 3gb when it is an ipad. 700mb when it ia other tablet. It is weird but thats how they are playing it

      • OK, does that mean the 3gb only applies to the Nano pack ?. I couldnt see any other way they would know its for an iPad in the activation process.

  • Plenty of stock at all stores I think. With the 1 per person limit. I've already bought my 5. Lol

    • are you using it for data or mobile?

      • Both. Activate new sim for surfing on the train.
My regular sim is just to receive calls. I carry a phone and phablet.

    • I couldn't find any in Eastwood NSW.

  • Went to Woolies today what is the difference between the pink package prepaid micro sim starter kit & the orange package prepaid sim starter kit ? I plan to use it for Ipad and Nexus 7. Did not end up up buying as I have no idea which one to buy.

    • Pink micro sim pack fits iPad. Orange standard sim probably fits normal phones. Not sure about nexus.

      • Thanks Amelyn

  • I would recommend to buy the Green nano sims as they have a longer expiry date on average. If the sims are too big or too small, you can cut it to the shape you need. Obviously don't cut the metal part of the sim and it's all good.

  • Hi Guys

Can anybody please confirm if I activate the 3G data plan (iPad plan) - it will work on a USB Modem?
The USB Modem is Huwaei K3773 originally with Vodafone but has been unlocked and supports Telstra 3G network

There is no option to change the APN but Vodafone advised it will detect the different sim automatically (no need to change APN)

However Telstra is saying the iPad data plan will not work in the USB modem, I have to activate the sim card as the mobile broadband plan (700mb data allowance only)

    Please help
    Thanks

    • +1

It will work, but Telstra can cancel the plan if they find out that it is not being used in an iPad. You can search in the whirlpool forums as this has happened before.

  • I went to 3 wollies near where I live but none of them has the nano sim pack in stock, 2 of them don't even have any of the starter kit.

  • +2

Just got a pack at Aust post, after a failure at Woolies. Smashed the $30 on Play store apps that I've been meaning to buy!

    • Did you need to activate any pre-paid plans to do this?

      • Yeah, had to fully activate the sim. Provide all information/address etc. Once activated I put it into my stock Telstra phone and authorised Google play to charge my Telstra account.

One dumb thing I did was leave my 3G data on when I powered the phone up. Should have enabled wifi! That little mistake cost me 0.60c! :) Ruined my perfect plan. But got a bunch of apps, and made a few donation purchases to a few apps I use regularly.

  • Half price online still if you can't find any like me: https://onlineshop.telstra.com.au/prepaid-mobile/?tc=TR:TR:N…

    • It says valid upto 17th December 2012 !!! ;-)..i think they have not updated the info

"….Online exclusive offer: HALF-PRICE $30 Starter Kits until 17 December, 2012 unless withdrawn earlier by Telstra. Now only $15…."

  • The green nano sims state on the package that they will only work with mobile phones, has anyone tried them with an ipad mini?

    • Tried it with a mobile broadband modem - so it should work in the iPad mini.

  • A heads up for everyone - only the FULL SIZE SIM is on sale at Australia Post - I asked for the micro SIM pack and it scanned at $30 however the full size SIM pack scanned at $10 - nothing that scissors or a SIM cutter can't fix however just thought you should all know

  • think i got the last one from Auburn Woolies today. saw a nano sim and rest are starter kit.

  • Don't let finders have all the fun, if you missed out on one - ask for Woolies famous rain check. Works for me at Coles when I bought Soy Drink last, & that's for the physical goods.

    n.

  • Which sim card should I buy for Nexus 7 ?

    • Nexus 7 takes a micro SIM however you can always cut down a full size one

      • Thanks for the info. Is it hard to cut ie can I just a normal scissor to cut ?

  • Hey which Telstra APN is best with the iPad SIM deal?
Willl be using it mostly in aUSB modem telstra.iph? telstra.internet?

  • hey all. thanks for the heads up. great deal i bought a few. just to be sure. when you activate the card and choose a plan. does it all give u a $30 account balance no matter which plan you choose? ( say cap plan? ) my plan is to activate it and use up all the calls credits and transfer the $30 balance away.

    cheers!

  • No stock at preston nut plenty at northland store.

  • Thanks OP. :)

I've just bought the sim as advertised at the local Auspost.
It was not visible in the shop but they had it at the counter when I inquired.

I am now busy purchasing apps from the Google play store.
$10 for $30 of apps across all my androids. Bargain!

After I'm done bleeding it dry, the SIM card will meet an untimely demise.
