If Amazon Delivered to Your Neighbour and They Kept It - What Would You Do? Please Discuss

The very situation happened with me recently. Funnily enough I ordered something that piqued my interest after seeing a deal for the product on this very site.

Got the notification that the item was out for delivery…. then the notification that it had been delivered. I was very excited, open my front door and there's NO ITEM!

Panic set in, maybe the driver kept it for himself? Do further investigating and check the tracking……………………. the photo proof of delivery was definitely NOT my front door.

Did a bit of investigating and yes the photo matches the residence of one of my neighbours and the package was no longer there. Knocked on the door and no answer.

Would you just consider the item lost or get police intervention?

                        • @Randolph Duke: no… they just need to stop wasting tax payers money on things like $200 billion rail loops.

                          • @jv: Yes, let’s never build infrastructure that will benefit the state for generations. What we’ve got now will serve us forever.

Not when we can't afford it or when corrupt governments are paying $200K-$300K for CFMEU bikies to do nothing.

                              • @jv: Historically interest rates are average, so not a terrible time to borrow. And the government isn’t hiring the bikies.

That's why the police do an investigation first…

                  • @jv: Sadly this isnt how the system works police dont work on assumptions only facts , imagine you were the neighbour and Police turned up accusing you of stealing with no evidence,
You would certainly never get a search warrant based on what op has said

            • @Wayne7497:

              Police dont investigate assumptions

The package is in the possession of someone other than the legal owner.
That is potentially theft and the police are required to investigate.

              • @jv: No they are not, the op has not shown any offence has been committed all he has shown is his parcel was incorrectly delivered.

                • @Wayne7497:

                  No they are not

                  Who is 'they' ?

@HangryCakeStore: Really laughable, day to day Policing isnt and doesnt get media attention and 99% of coppers avoid media at all costs they are only interested in views whereas as coppers are interested in doing their jobs

The problem is with Amazon and not with the neighbour. Amazon have the problem with the neighbour but they should really deal with you getting your order first.

The problem is with Amazon and not with the neighbour.

The problem is with whoever stole it.

      • True.
But add that the responsibility is with the seller (Amazon).

        • Why?

          • +2

@jv: Because the purchase contract hasn't been fulfilled until the buyer receives what they paid for?

            • @reactor-au:

until the buyer receives what they paid for?

that has been sub-contracted to the deliverer…

              • +2

@jv: That's not the customers concern, that's between amazon and their sub-contractors. Buyer has a contract with amazon.

                • @reactor-au:

Buyer has a contract with amazon.

                  and Amazon sent the item.

    • Neighbour is having early thanks giving

  • +11

This has happened to me , i contacted support, explained the situation, then they gave me a refund.

    • the logical result

    • Happened to me too. Amazon support was quick to refund.

  • -1

I was just posing the question out of interest. I did deal with the situation in the following way: By contacting Amazon support who gradually connected me with the right department to speak with. In the end I did get a refund via online gift card. Which I used to re-order the same item. The customer service agent said it would be a good idea to add delivery instructions (I already had instructions, but they expanded upon it in very bad written English). The replacement item was delivered successfully (aside from the CSA's additional "call the customer before attempting delivery" wasn't followed by the deliverer lol).

I'm not the type of person that seeks violent retribution, but I don't think the neighbour is in the right to keep the wrongly delivered item. Yes I'm going by assumptions but I'm thinking it was the likely outcome based on the timeline, the layout of the drive way & house entrance (front door is not visible to anyone walking past on the footpath etc). What annoys me in that instance (if true of course) - why not just put it on my doorstep. Although I do think it would be amusing that they just put it in the post office box thats virtually across the road and I got the item eventually. But enough time has passed for that to NOT be the case.

    • +9

Another possible scenario, Amazon driver takes photo at neighbours door knowing it’s not the right address, then retrieves it knowing you’ll get a refund and blame neighbour for stealing it. They wouldn’t want to do this often, as it will presumably catch up with them eventually, however they probably have a KPI to stay under for errors and know how they are tracking against this.

      • Pretty sure that happened to me, although the driver didn't even bother with a photo.
Customer support based in India was a headache to get a replacement sent instead of a refund.

        • +2

They normally won't replace just refund which can be a problem if the item has gone up in price or out of stock. I had a delivery stuff up which they wanted to refund but as it was not my fault they agreed to gift card the balance between the then and now price, about $120 due to prime day sale so worth fighting for.

          • @mauricem: I was rrlived that I got the tefu d and was able to reorder the item before their special price finished.

A few months ago I ordered an item at more than 50% off. The item that came WAS barcoded as tjough it was the item I ordered. But the packaging of the item was completely different (not my item at all). Arranged a return, got my money back but had to pay full price for the item as the sale had finished :-/

          • @mauricem: The couple of times I've had something not turn up they asked if I wanted a refund or replacement.

      • +4

I've been in almost the same situation.

An expensive item was shipped to me via DHL from Europe to my Mum's house (my place is unsafe from porch pirates). I received a photo from DHL confirming safe drop with a photo of the item on Mum's decking. The guy did not knock, but Mum noticed the van and went outside to find the driver walking away with the parcel under his arm. He gave the parcel directly to her and left.

So… he had taken the photo of the safe drop (and presumably updated DHL's system) before walking back to his van with the parcel. Can't be sure enough to allege anything…. but… he was stealing it.

        • yeah tbh OP's situation happens to me all the time with dodgy couriers.

not sure why stores don't just use whatever service amazon uses (Flex?) or Auspost. I don't get it.

even australian companies located in australia sometimes ship you stuff with an international courier company. just weird.

btw DHL is known for making most of their money with insurance. so especially expensive orders they are usually insured, final employee/courier probably knows that if package goes missing, it's insured so a quick solution will happen DHL pays out with no investigation.

JUST GO ask your neighbour and show them the picture, why is that so hard? GO FIND OUT. they might just hand it to you or say sorry. or something YOU don't even know. You rather hide away and never talk to them? i don't get it why people can't talk.

I once received someone else's Amazon package. The address wasn't close, a couple of suburbs away.
I would have dropped it off at the correct house a couple of days later, but since it was a bit of hassle I messaged Amazon first to let them know, in case the person raised an issue with them.

Amazon just told me to keep it. I guess it's easier for them to just send out another package.

So, before jumping to accusations of theft just because your neighbours weren't home, just raise a case with Amazon and you'll be sorted out.
Best case your neighbours give you back the original one too, and then you'll have TWO body pillows

    • a couple of suburbs away

Not as silly as it sounds. 3 suburbs away has the same street name and we've received some mail from the same house number. Carpenter once turned up as well and we had to redirect him.

  • +1

Did you consider the neighbour may no longer have been home to answer, you could of revisited at a different time and ask them politely. Fair chance you would have even been given the item.

Anyways glad you got the refund/replacement item. As for the comment about the delivery driver did not even call before delivering, for many of them its not in their protocol to do so regardless of what's been requested on the package, after all it is just that a request not a contractual agreement with the courier company to fulfill.

    • Guess they have pretty good profit margins! My cousin ordered a switch and was sent two, also told to just keep it 😮

Edit: Oops, replied to the wrong comment

Maybe try your neighbour at night to increase chance they will be home and confirm before jumping to conclusions ? Maybe they are just lazy and just rather wait until you went to their house to retrieve it

If you find out your neighbour is a thief, next time you just take his package then

  • +2

So OP knocked on the neighbours door ONCE and got no reply. Maybe neighbour was at shops, works etc?
Now OP wants to get the police involved
    Give me a break

    • I asked for advice if it was something I should do. As I've dealt with the matter by getting the refund, then reordering and finally getting the item. I was more or less asking what others would do in my situation.

      • I would still go knock on neighbours door. TALK with them, make it known you know about this and have proof, they can do it again if it happens again. It would spook them

      • I would knock a few more times and wait until I at least spoke to them before considering any other action. Getting police involved, showing proof, talking to Amazon etc don't need to be considered until after you speak to them. It's insane that this was your first thought without even speaking to them.

  • +2

I recieve a lot of parcel, some for me and some for my wife, I often don't check and just dump them somewhere. Maybe keep trying to knock, make contact and be polite about it first. Don't just rock up with a swat team and expect your neighbour to be impressed.

Dragonfly Shipping Sunshine Coast delivered an Amazon parcel of mine…to a motel 300m away.

The only similarity was the Suburb, but that didn't stop them being absolute pratts.

I should say 'dropped' my new phone in a box as watched him do it, fortunately, and asked him 'anything for me' at which point he said…"oh that was yours… the door number starts with a six"….etc… the rest is too painful.

No, I do not live in a motel!

  • Quite possible the neighbour didnt take it. Porch pirates are common in some areas.

  • +4

next time call FBI before posting on ozbargain, its the only way

  • We had something similar happen, but we received the item by mistake.

Wife accidentally opened the package as she was distracted by our little one.. Inside were some male enhancement gummies..

Wife left it on the front window and still waiting for the neighbour to pick it up

  • +1

You haven't even spoken to your neighbour yet. I don't know what kind of relationship you have with them, but maybe try getting an answer from them first, instead of jumping straight to the cops before you even hear their side. Possible they thought someone might steal it if they left it on your porch and were waiting for a better time to return it, or they saw it as they were leaving in a hurry and quickly moved it into their home because they didn't have the time to carry it over and knock on your door.

    • +100 for this.

knocked once and got no answer, jump straight to cops

  • Wasn't delivered to your address + photo is not of your door = Let that be Amazon's responsibility to rectify

What I want to know is was this Sold By and Ship From Amazon, or atleast 'Ship from' Amazon?

If it was Amazon then I'm sure the Amazon Flex app tracks where the driver was at the time of delivery so they should be able to see that he wasn't at your address and Amazon live support should organise another one to be sent, otherwise if it was done through Australia Post/StarTrack/Couriers Please (etc) then let Amazon (or the third party seller on Amazon) deal with it.

  • when and how many times did you knock? maybe they had gone out? gone to the backyard? having a dump?

    try again…

but yeah ultimately feel free to lodge it with Amazon for a proper resolution. The cops have better things to do.

  • +1

Not knowing what was the item. But have a casual chat with the neighbour and bring the item along the lines that I recently bought X at a great price off Amazon. It is amazing, let me know if you are interested, I will be happy to show you the item/share the link/or I ordered two, if you were interested. The expressions on the neighbour's face, priceless.

  • Need to be persistent when you knock on doors.

Nobody opens the door in my area unless you stand there for 5 minutes knocking 2-3 times minimum. It's because 99.9% chance they are selling something or religious people. They knock once then leave after a minute.

  • Just raise a ticket with Amazon telling them delivery address shown in picture is not your address, you will get refund super quick especially if you ordered items before.

  • Go and knock during the night.

  • Just go TO YOUR neighbor AND ask them, show them the photo. Just don't blame them for anything out right, if they deny it then say this is your front door, is it not? if they deny it again, then you know they are scammy and not to be trusted or someone else stole it. After that, go to Amazon and get a refund. Your neighbour might just hand it over and not want bad blood. and they might say sorry or be friendly.

Are you scared to ask your neighbour?

  • +1

don't bother with the neighbour, if they decided to take the parcel, they've decided not to give a f*** to op, raise it to Amazon insisting you've never received the parcel, after all it's their fault so they ought to fix it

  • +1

Try the police and if no luck, I'd confront them. If they deny it, fists will be thrown.

The idea of scummy neighbours raises my blood pressure.

    • Cool down dude. He doesn’t even know if his neighbour took it.

      • Well if there's proof that is. Then it'll go down :)

    • Don't take your fists to a knife fight. Just ask Amazon for a refund. Later, put some dog poop in their letterbox. Revenge is a dish best served cold (and stinky).

      • You could get caught by cameras doing that.
Better to put the poop inside a plastic bag which goes into an envelope. Glue the edge of the bag to the envelope so that when the envelope is opened the bag rips open too to release your stinky revenge.
Send it via AusPost so you are never seen near their letterbox.

  • Report the non delivery to Amazon. Let them handle it as they see fit. The end.

  • I've had this happen to me - sendle not amazon. I knocked a first time - no answer… so I tried again later, they gave me the item and said I'd saved them running it over to my house (wrong house a 100metres down the road, driver misread house numbers - confused a 1 and a 7 in address)

  • If your neighbour is a thief. Get your refund or replacement and let Amazon deal with them on their own.

  • Easy, just tell Amazon the one in the photo is NOT your door, bring proof (if required) through google street view, they will refund for sure. This is the delivery man fault so Amazon is responsible.

  • +1

Just ask the neighbour bro. People in my house just take parcels in and slap it in the hallway without looking at the name because we get so many.

Be a normal person and just approach your neighbour, I'm sure he isn't Hannibal Lecter. If he is, wouldn't be too worried about a lost package if I were you.

Waiting for the forum post of "Amazon delivered me my neighbors parcel, am I allowed to keep it?"

I was going to crack a joke and then REALISED THIS HAPPENED TO ME! Someone delivered to our address.

We order from Amazon all the time.
Bought our house and had been living there for a year.
So we got an Amazon package out the front and I immediately opened it, assuming it was my wife’s or mine. I see a pink handbag…
I yell at my wife demanding to know why she’s spending money on dumb stuff when we agreed on discussing purchases.

After investigating (checking the box). Correct address - some random chick’s name. Confused, decided we’d drop it off at the post office at some point but wasn’t going to prioritise some idiots misdelivery. We’re busy, so decided I’d wait until the weekend.

Then the next day, She rocks up demanding her handbag.
I ask her to update her address and she acts like I’m a thief for her stupidity.
I give her the box containing her handbag
(she was an epic CU in the NT)
    People are the worst.

    • I was going to crack a joke

      What was the joke?

      • Can’t remember now. But I have a new one:

        Knock knock
        Who’s there?
        Not your package…
        Not your package who?

(That’s it, you dont get a response and you don’t get your package, it’s gone)

    • +1

Just say you don't have it, she deserves it for being rude.

      • She got her bag and saved me a trip to the post office. Just the attitude was what got me.

I recognised the surname as we keep getting someone with her same surnames spam mail… she says “what was it?”
I said “I don’t know, I don’t open other people’s mail” (ironically I’d opened this chicks package) but had “returned to sender” for many months (and gave up)
We’d been at our address for 18 months at this point, this wasn’t the previous owners,
This was the tenant before the previous owner.

So she hadn’t updated her address in 4-5 years or so. Idiot

        • 100%^ re idiot.
