Random Facts on the original Nintendo Switch Launch
The Switch was officially released on March 3, 2017, worldwide in Japan, most English-speaking and Western markets and in the United Arab Emirates.[48] It was released with an MSRP of ¥29,980 in Japan, US$299.99 in the United States, £279.99 in the United Kingdom, and A$469.95 in Australia; with standardized pricing for the European market varying.[49][50][51] The set includes a Switch console, a dock; left and right Joy-Con controllers and accompanying straps; a Joy-Con grip, an AC power adapter and an HDMI cable.[52][53] There were two Switch bundles available at launch, one with grey Joy-Con and one with neon red and blue Joy-Con.[54] Nintendo feared that a higher price would harm sales, which prompted them to not include any additional hardware or games.

When you wakeup at 3am to find it's confirmed release date & price, of course you jump on the PC and post up a well detailed description

      That’s nice but where’s the deal…

Same place as all the other RRP listings. Oznotsobargain

I agree EB are ripoff merchants! I never buy from them.

@nickw1984syd: say what you will about EB games but they are the best when it comes to their pre-order system

      Thanks for the effort.
Pre-ordered a Switch 2 bundle from EB Games.

      • Welcome!

  • +4

You'd have to get the MK World bundle for an extra $70 surely.

If this is compatible with S1 games and the Pro controller this would accelerate a purchase here. Our old Switch has had a hard life with the kids.

    • +3

Depends if you are okay with digital code vs physical copy

    • +2

I have zero interest in racing/Mario kart games.

I'm probably going to go for the base console, use that 70 dollar savings and put it toward the 'Switch 2' enhanced version of some of the games I already own (BoTW/ToTK)

      • +1

Those upgrades are free with the NSO+EP subscription

        • Wait, really??

I'm still scraping together heresay and secondhand news about all this from various tweets and reddit.

          That's… amazing news is so!

        • Considering it’s also only $60 A YEAR (about $5/m), compared to $170 A YEAR (about $14-15/m) for PS+ Standard that gives you the game catalog, I think this is a decent-ish deal, provided that you’re comfortable with playing predominantly retro games instead of newer titles.
But, as always, Game Pass still solos with their extended catalog, especially if you buy an Xbox Series S at a discounted price.

    • It is backwards compatible with some Switch 1 titles getting upgraded packs you can pay for (improved visuals and features)

  • -1

I imagine the homebrew community are going to have a field day when they figure out how to emulate the Steamdeck on it.

    • +5

It's hard enough with the fastest Snapdragon trying to emulate x86 game support already with very average frame rates when you can actually get it to work.

    • +6

I imagine it'll be the other way around. Homebrewers are more likely to emulate the Switch 2 on the Steam Deck

      • That’s the joke.
Although if Z2 Extreme is decently powerful enough, we might get Switch 2 emulation on that.
But most likely we’ll move to partial emulation and virtualisation/compat layers for newer systems that are based on more common architectures.
The only reason that the Steam Deck can play Bloodborne is because it’s only emulating the I/O, while it’s natively using the AMD APU to actually run the game.
The next best thing is for people to use NVIDIA’s Jetson Orin or better (preferably with more than 8GB) to virtualise or make a translation layer for the Switch 2 system.

      • Just curious is emulate to enable playing switch 2 games on the steam deck

  • +5

Pre-ordered the Mario Kart bundle. I know it's digital, but it's one of those you always want on hand to quickly switch to for parties etc.

Rumours of this selling out as well, so it's not a bad idea to pre-order if you're interested. EB have always been good with change of minds!

    • I pre ordered it too from EB for $50 down, will take a bag of games and my old console to trade as well when I pick it up.

      • +4

You'll get more to just sell them privately now

        • +5

Hassle free comes with a cost. Plus I got my switch at launch it’s 8 yrs old any trade is a good trade.

          • +4

@Onemoredeal: Launch switches can be soft modded so can go for a bit more than usual 👀

            • @nugstar: Doesn’t it depend on if the Switch has been updated beyond a certain point that the hack is moot?

              • @FujinShu: I believe firmware version is irrelevant with the original models, the hardware version is what determines whether you can mod or not.

That said, I never bothered with mine.

          • @Onemoredeal: Sure but the difference is going to massive. The console will be a few hundred dollars different and games will be half the price you get private.

Worth skipping the hassle if you only like $50 more, but if you got a few 1st party Nintendo games it could be the difference between $300 and $600

          • +1

@Onemoredeal: Hey mate, just letting you know i did this the other day, i dont know if you have a Cex store locally but they have way better trading prices, the also have an online data base so you can see how much you will get for which games, they offer a cash price and a voucher price, EB will match their voucher price if you are using your credit for trade, i swapped a bunch of ps4 games, a few switch games, an old ps3 console and 2 wii u games which i got $60 each for, got a total of $650 which almost covered the console, would of only been about $450 if i didnt match with Cex

            • @Qazxswec: Cheers mate, sis you print a bunch of screen shots for them to prove it?

              • +1

@Onemoredeal: I added them all to my sell basket, then printed it, but you can also download the app and show them on your phone

  • +24

Yeah narh, I’m not paying $104-$114 for Nintendo games. And keep in mind that Nintendo 1st party games never go on sale. At least with PS5 and Xbox it’ll drop in price in just a few months.

    • Im betting that with this game and gta 6, most future games will keep at this higher price.

      • How much are you betting?

    • They do go on sale, just not as regularly. I bought a brand new copy of mario odyssey just the other week for $49

      • +6

But the lowest that 8 year old game got was probably around $60 (without any other discounts). At this stage, it should be a $25-30 game, but Nintendo is Nintendo

      • +2

        Exactly.

It's 2025, $49 is not "on sale" LOL. Not for anyone but Nintendo.

Most OzBargainer PC gamers buy almost all their games for $20 or less in 60%-90% off Steam sales, in addition to the free AAA games they get on Epic and Prime.

Some PC and most xbox gamers pay $15 a month (or less) for Gamepass and play the best AAA games there.

Sony has a similar subscription service (though not as good) and proper discounts in their online store.

But all the 1st party Nintendo games (the reason to own a Nintendo console in the first place) never drop much below fifty bucks or so.

If you include games, at the prices people actually pay in 2025, the Switch is still the most expensive console by a considerable margin. Despite being a gen behind.

Don't be fooled by just comparing launch prices.

      • Yeah but Nintendo games are incredible value and replay for what they are. Some games come out on Console and PC and are trash, especially ones that are early access. Zelda is legit better than our real lives.

    • +4

In the olden days (1980-1990s) NES games were around $120 from Myer. Gemini tells me it's around $300 in today's money🫨

      • +6

        A rip-off then, and a rip-off now

      • +1

Surely not…back in the day I'm fairly sure I bought NES games for $49-$59, with the most expensive being SMB3 at ~$79 I even picked up less popular games like Snake Rattle and Roll for $29.99 Digger T-Rock for $19.99 from Toyworld. Some of my games in storage still have the price tags on but I can't be bothered digging them out to confirm absolutely.

I specifically remember being blown away by prices over $100 (BFD, Zero Dark) when the N64 came out, I believe that's the first time I saw games for a nintendo console above $100.

Even with absurd Myer markup I don't believe NES games were $120 at Myer, although I am willing to be corrected.

        Source: I am old.

        • +1

Check out some old Hyper magazines from the mid 90s at Archive dot org and you can find ads for SNES games that go well past $100. Granted not NES but game prices have been higher in the past than they are going to get to soon, especially factoring in inflation.

          • +2

@Shenannigoat: Oh yeah, agree with that, I believe SNES Street Fighter 2 was over $100 back in the day!

I jusy never saw it myself with NES games thats all.

And yes, with inflation games are actually cheaper now.

            • +1

@A 1: No, I don’t remember 3-digit price tags for NES games either.

  • Limited time production through Fall 2025. Available while supplies last. - Quoted from Nintendo's official Facebook account

    • +15

I mean if you were Nintendo, wouldn't you be saying the same?

I doubt they would be saying there is "plenty of stock, no need to rush to preorder."

    • +10

      maybe the opposite

president Shuntaro Furukawa says that the company is “taking risks and proceeding with production so that we can meet as much demand as possible,”

      • +1

        For Europe pre-orders…

"In a bid to prevent a repeat of the same scalping issues that befell both the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 5, Nintendo has announced that pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 will initially be limited to those with Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions."

        https://www.gamingbible.com/news/platform/nintendo/nintendo-…

I've also heard they are manufacturing high volumes in an attempt to reduce scalping, sorry I don't have a source on this one though. I'm sure they're going hard, they know it's going to sell fairly well, there's several years of pent up demand for it. The price might put a few people off though!

    • +1

So? That's just the bundle. Not like they'll stop selling hardware either without a game, or in a new bundle

  • +29

    Isn't it a bit expensive

    • -6

Compared too? It’s on par with other handhelds in this range.

That could be expensive for you but it’s not expensive in todays market.

      • Lol

        • +10

A lot of downvotes but no one actually capable of providing a comparison.

          I'll provide one, a Steam Deck LCD (60hz - 1280x800 - 7") 256GB is $649 RRP.

          A Switch2 (120hz - 1920x1080 - 7.9") is $699 RPP.

The value of the library is relative to the individual.

The hardware is not "expensive" to the market. The value proposition is expensive to you, which is fine, don't buy it. If the market feels the same, they will take measures to correct it.

          • -2

@eagerfisherman: The difference is the Steam Deck is also based on standard x86 PC hardware and has an unlocked bootloader, making it a relatively open hardware platform and extending its lifespan to do anything a PC can do.
The value proposition might not be “expensive” to you, but a lot of early adopters of new products are gaming/tech enthusiasts that are a lot more wary of price, especially if something else of a same or lower price can do MUCH more than another.
Although a better idea would be to wait for a Switch 2 Lite before comparing to a Steam Deck that DOESN’T have detachable controllers, it doesn’t help that the games are MUCH more expensive compared to the Switch 1’s library.

      • Or conversely, comparable handhelds are also expensive. Plus, this (currently) will only play Switch games; at least other handhelds are more flexible.

    • IMO Yeah, it is expensive.

I say that, because it is. Since the Wii, Nintendo has been positioning itself in the market as the cheaper, family friendly, "second" console for households. The switch has a great range of fun games but the graphic capabilities are limited. Not everyone can afford (or wants) an Xbox, PC, PS4/5 and a Switch, but often they are willing to have their "main" gaming system AND the cheaper Switch to go with it. I believe this is the main reason the Switch (1) has sold so well over the last 8 years.

With the Switch 2, Nintendo is pricing and positioning itself as equal to consoles like the PS5, but performance wise it doesn't stack up. Personally, I think its a bad move, I believe most of the Switch customer base is focused on value, fun, family gaming. Yes, Nintendo will pick up more "serious" gamers, but they are already well catered for with numerous other consoles in the market.

I think with the success of the Switch 1, Nintendo has become overconfident, priced their hardware and software too high and alienate their main customer base.

Having said all of that, I'll probably cave and buy one myself, got to keep the console collection going.

Another Pre Order at MSRP. That’s not a deal.

    • +13

      ^^^

The Switch console trade deal is even worse. EB is spitting on you with this deal. They spit on you and I watch from my Bezos cuck chair

      • +7

        lol. 499 + switch + 4 games

        So switch + 4 games worth 200.

        • +1

Oh damn, I glossed over the graphic and didn't see the part where they want 4 games as well.

Yeah maybe I will just hold onto the current switch..

        • +2

The trade deal is extremely bad!!!! $200 for a switch OLED plus 4 games too!

          • @burningrage: oled one too! maybe its would have been sort of ok if it were the original version. but oled is a complete ripoff. Right now you can ge tmuch more just putting it up on gumtree.

Also why is preorder at rrp suddenly a deal? I think i'll also put up a post about JB and each of whatever other retailer decided to open up for preorders as well.

      • +2

EB games ripping you off on trades.. nooo!

      • +6

correct! i paid $135 for streetfighter 2 lol

        • Same. 1992 I believe it was. Was so much anticipation for those Japanese Super Famicom carts to arrive.

Back when rent didn't cost 50% of your income

        • Back when rent didn't cost 50% of your income

you're pulling the pricing then out of it's time and applying it to our current economic environment

          • +2

@aja12: You mean kind of like charging a hundred bucks for a game in an era with a hundred times bigger market, gamepass, Epic freebies, and 90% off Steam sales?

          • @aja12: No, I'm highlighting that the context of the SNES pricing and that the context of the current pricing is very different.

You're the one who keeps trying to excuse the Switch 2 pricing by comparing it directly to consoles of the 90s out of context

      • +2

$130 from Target for Super Street Fighter 2 on Megadrive, still got the sticker on it.

    • +2

      It’s nostalgic - a throwback to the N64.

      • damn i remember paying that in 1990's dollars for a few games on release back then…
as a grown adult with income the thought of paying that now even though its worth half as much still feels too much

    • PS5 games are $125 at launch these days and the price does not drop like it used to.

Anything worth playing on PS5 is $100+

    • Looks like I'm getting an RG cube for $230 and playing a billion games on that instead for free! Including wind waker!

  • +15

    $700 smackeroonies. Yeah, nah.

    • -6

But hey, i really need to get one and play on the train, so everyone sees how cool i am

Just man-spread and you’ll be just as cool - and impress the ladies/ men with your man bulge at that.

        • -1

And my Crocs and fanny pack

    • +1

With its specs? Im more like nah, yeah.

    • +4

Yeah AU$499 (no game) for Dreamcast launch back in 1999 was much better value, agree.

  • I want to do the trade deal because my joycons are half working. They operate nornally but one the led light isn't working and one intermittent work when docked to the switch. Is that worth it or should I repair or replace the joycons?

    • Well, if you're still going to use the switch 1 and you're in warranty might as well see if you can get repair.

Joycons won't be compatible with switch 2 so if you were trading your console might as well trade the joycons

      • +1

Original Switch Joy Cons will still work with the Switch 2, just need a charging dock or grip for them if you don't still have a Switch in the house

        • Oh that's great to know.

I imagine some games with the new motion features won't go great with them though?

  • Thanks for sharing the link, have preordered the Mario Kart bundle for my husband and sons!

  • +11

Lol, $700. No thanks. They obviously know they can get away with it as that's similar pricing to the xbox and playstation.

    • It’s a direct price comparison to the US as our dollar is trash. Though it could be going up in a few hours if Trumpy has his way ….

      • +1

Trump just tariffed Japan 24% … NintendOuch in the US

        • +1

And good for us as there will be less demand in the U.S with 24% tariff on Japanes goods

    • It's closer to $500 in Japan

      • That's the Japanese only model, the normal model the rest of the world gets is 69980 yen, which is pretty much $700 so no difference.
