Random Facts on the original Nintendo Switch Launch
The Switch was officially released on March 3, 2017, worldwide in Japan, most English-speaking and Western markets and in the United Arab Emirates.[48] It was released with an MSRP of ¥29,980 in Japan, US$299.99 in the United States, £279.99 in the United Kingdom, and A$469.95 in Australia; with standardized pricing for the European market varying.[49][50][51] The set includes a Switch console, a dock; left and right Joy-Con controllers and accompanying straps; a Joy-Con grip, an AC power adapter and an HDMI cable.[52][53] There were two Switch bundles available at launch, one with grey Joy-Con and one with neon red and blue Joy-Con.[54] Nintendo feared that a higher price would harm sales, which prompted them to not include any additional hardware or games.

Is the world that riddled with FOMO that RRP is considered a bargain?

  • -5

you guys gotta chill tf out.

the ps2 was $750 AUD when it launched in australia 20+ years ago. adjusted for inflation, that's $1,450

$700 is completely reasonable for a brand new console. so is $120 for a launch game.

i will admit, the choppy screen share footage had me cringe for a solid 10 minutes tho lmao

    • +3

so is $120 for a launch game

In what world is that a reasonable price?

      • +1

        ps3 games were $100 AUD

        • +1

The price of PS3 games may have been partly due to the high costs of blu-ray at the time. I was team Xbox 360 back then and don't remember paying more than $80 for new releases. I could always rely on Big W with competitive pricing. The silver lining of the steep cost of the Switch 2 is that it might just help curb my addiction.

          • -1

            @youfnc: didn't curb mine lol i preordered.

i think they've got the pricing spot on. i didn't order mario kart tho, i'll wait for a bargain. it's inevitable. someone will slip up lol

let's come back to this when the ps6 releases and compare haha

    • the ps2 was $750 AUD when it launched in australia 20+ years ago. adjusted for inflation, that's $1,450

      Yes also a rip-off.

    • You realise the ps2 itself was a DVD player… at a time when DVD was shooting off and DVD players were expensive af.

Same story with the ps3 only this time it was blurays and that sweet sweet cell processor.

Valve set aggressive pricing on the deck to get more steam traffic, and pc games don't come close to that stupid rrp on release. Not to mention getting grey market games for half the price or going full pirate.

Nintendo has always been about profits, look how much times they've re-released the same game throughout different generation of consoles there is never fair pricing from these scums.

      • you raise a great point about the dvd player. i also agree about Nintendo being scummy generally.

but price escalation doesn't lie. obviously competition has increased over time to keep pricing low.

ps2 games at launch were $80 AUD and the ps3 $100 AUD each.

when you take into account the premium of mario kart being a launch title, it being AAA, the margin required to produce physical cartridges and ship them, $120 is about right, if not cheaper than what a title like this should demand at launch.

in saying that, BOTW was $90 lol

    • +1

      I don't disagree in part,

      But it's all about context.

The PS2 was a huge leap ahead of the rest, if Dreamcast was the next best thing at the time, PS2 smashed the competition. It also ushered in a brand new format for movies that would go on to be more or less the biggest and last home media format, in a way that was about the same price as a cheap DVD player on it's own.

The only real thing they have in common, PS2 and Switch 2 I mean, is they're both following up a massive success, and have back compat. Back compat is great, but without compelling games (or some other reason, like being massively ahead of everyone else, or a DVD player), 700 is a bit of a tall order. Switch 2 doesn't look to even beat the Series S in many respects, which is 500 bucks RRP and 5 years old to boot.

I don't expect charity, I understand how money works, but like, I think 600 would have been the sweet-ish tap out spot. I could have pulled the trigger on 600 but 700? My Steam Deck, current gen consoles, and a million emulator machines will suffice.

      • we'll see where the price heads in the next 6 months. I think it stays at 700 and increases next year.

i'm the same boat as you as a consumer, but we are literally less than 2% of the handheld market being steam deck owners. 3m steam deck sales vs 150m switch sales. steam deck pricing would be a concern to nintendo as a future risk, but today? nah.

If anyone has an account with Macquarie Bank, their marketplace sells 7% off EB Game vouchers. I signed up for this account just to buy gift vouchers, in the past they had 5% off Apple now it’s gone.

    • the vouchers are usable at EB instore only - sadly.

      • I'm not sure if it's the same gift cards, but I definitely use online-bought EB gift cards online.

Eg. Use shopback to buy 4% discount EB gift cards, jump on EB website and select to purchase PSN gift cards. Then use EB gift cards to pay.

      • Not sure about that, doesn’t the app generate a code which can also be used online? Not an issue if you’re going by to collect in store anyway which is what I’m planning to do. Did the $50 deposit online, pay the rest in person using the gift cards.

        • EB games (my local one at least) can’t process preorders instore. They tired and it does not allow them.

The store manager tells me they restricted it to online only - to avoid over preordering without tracking with inventory supplies.

      • I just used $50 eb game gcs online for the pre order

  • +2

I'd laugh if someone had it for a dollar less and you posted it, but this is literally just RRP, so…?

    • It is literally $0.95 cheaper at JB Hi-Fi

      • lmao I know, I saw that right after, even when everyone charges the same, EB will be the one who is those few cents more

  • +2

    This is just rrp.

  • +2

"Some physical games are available as a game-key card. Insert a game-key card to download the full game to your system. You can play the game by starting it like a standard physical game card."

    • +2

$114 for a code. It's the dawn of something truly beautiful

    • That was basically the behaviour of many games this gen already. Nothing new there really. Been many titles that shipped on smaller cheaper cartridges and then had mandatory downloads.

    • Can we re-sell the game key card after downloaded and finished for the game?

      • It would be pretty stupid if the keycard is bind on use to your account. Not only can you not resell it, you now have to keep carrying the key to play vs just installing a digital purchase.

  • +4

Nintendo can pay for their own advertising mate, anyone that doesn't know about this has their head in the sand(and probably better for it). Put the Bargain back in Ozbargain.

  • +3

This site needs a RRP tag so I can filter out these non bargains

  • +2

    OzRRP, no bargain here 🙃

  • +3

TLDR, but if anyone’s looking for a 7% discount on the deposit or full amount, Amazon are doing 7% off Ultimate gift cards

    • Can you explain how I use to ultimate gift cards of $500 and $269 when paying on the eb games website?

      • The ultimate gift card, I think celebration one works with EB games.
You can treat it as a regular credit card, put card number in, ccv and expiry. For the name just put anything.
Select amount of $500 by the way.

The remainder I would pay at the time of pick up or go instore and tap&pay.

  • Why are they using LCD again?

    • +2

Gotta have a reason for people to purchase it again after the mid-life upgrade.

    • +2

So they can sell an OLED 'upgrade' again in the future.

    • Imagine the launch price with an OLED…

  • +1

No deal to be had here, JB HiFi is actually $0.95 cheaper. I ha e pre ordered 3… waiting for the homebrew community to come through.

    • I bought my switch a week after they launched the patched switch 1 so I now am buying it day 1 and no updating it until it's got cfw. Not making the same mistake

  • +6

April Fools was two days ago

  • +3

There's no way this will be scalped.

    • +1

Check eBay, already a bunch of delusional people have the pre-order for sale…

    • I think it will be scalped…..but i also think the scalpers will be in for a rude surprise.

  • Preordered "Nintendo Switch 2 Console + Mario Kart World Bundle" from JB by using gift cards purchased on Amazon for $716.

  • +2

    OzRRP

  • +2

I hope a similar “3DS Launch price cut” happens and Nintendo Humble’s down.

    • Evidently 150 million Switches was too much for Nintendo so they want to ensure they don't sell too many this time around.

  • +2

More than a PS5? Or Portable PC? Not worth it

  • +1

Not a deal…. no discount - infact EB is likely to be the most expensive!

  • I will get one, just not on launch. Still have plenty other games to play, on switch 1 and other platforms. Haven't see any big games that instantly catch my eyes yet. Good upgrade, and surely they will sell a lot.

  • +4

For the first time ever - I’m actually put-off by Nintendo’s console pricing. It does not help that MKW is a digital copy too.

I’ll preorder just in case I go through with it - but sheesh!

    • +3

Nintendo thanks you for validating their pricing!

      • -1

And I thank you for commenting on my post!

  • +2

    Not a deal

  • +2

$700 for an LCD screen 😂

    • **steam deck entered to the chat***

  • For what its worth, first gen Nintendo consoles are usually patchable if you are the type who enjoys sailing the high seas. 🏴‍☠️

    • Exactly why I pre-ordered one.
Not for the sailing, but for the modifying side of things. Was pretty awesome emulating on my switch.

    • Haven't kept up to date but wasn't the home-brew group taken down in court? Something about putting pirated games behind a pay wall when using their jailbreak?

    • But wouldn’t Nintendo ensure that it is not easily patchaable like the first batch switch after the experience with switch

      • +1

You'd think so…right? But looking at Wii, Wii-U, Switch, DS etc…I believe they all have been able to run home brew.

        • Eventually it will be home-brew…

          • @cloudie9: Yea eventually. But another consideration is if its hardware or software based homebrew.

  • -2

Hence proved, PlayStation is serious in business, and better than Minitendo

  • -3

Not only is this just a stock standard price, but it's actually a complete rip-off.

$700 is completely over-priced for this console. You can buy a PS5 for less than that, and this is even more underpowered than that. Nintendo is shooting themselves in the foot/being greedy AF. Forgetting what their userbase is and why people like Nintendo (low cost, fun games).

    • You can buy a ps5, then you need to buy a tv/monitor.
And you can't carry the ps5 around to play it, so you need to buy a portal AND have stable internet connection.

    • -1

I would actually suggest that you have no idea who the Nintendo userbase is - Nintendo have never been the leader in graphics power and it most certainly didnt impact sales of the original switch.
It's $50 more than the 256gb steam deck from the steam store, which seems about fair to me, considering that it will likely have new games coming out for it for much longer.

      • -2

Yes that's my point. Nintendo is moving away from what they're known for and price gouging.

      • Nintendo have never been the leader in graphics power

The SNES was technically superior to the Mega Drive wasn't it?

        • +1

Pretty much through to the Game Cube Nintendo competed on a technology front. It was with the Wii that they pivoted away from looking to compete technically.

  • +1

Ah, typical Nintendo. They never miss a chance to fu** up after a successful generation.

NES to SNES, Gameboy to GB Advance, N64 to Gamecube, DS to 3DS, Wii to WiiU same story, they always have fewer sales numbers.

    • -2

      Username checks out

    • +2

SNES, GBA and 3DS were all commercial successes.
Sure the gamecube and wii U were relative flops but noone gets everything right all the time

      • The N64 wasn’t an amazing seller either, so I wouldn’t put that on a pillar if we’re comparing purely based on sales.

      • -1

They were successful but not as successful compared to previous gens. That's my point.

Btw 3DS also had price problem at launch, few months later they immediately dropped the price around 20%

        • Yeah the NES was successful only in the US, and that was due to their bullshit licensing agreements.

  • -1

I’m going to get one but this is not Oz-pre-order-RRP

  • -3

Agree with the others. Not a deal but still going to get.

  • +1

That's crazy steep. Unless it's a PS5 in your hands, not sure about that.

  • +1

    Preorder now, decide later!

  • +3

    RRP, no deal.

  • I think the real bargain would be to get the Japanese one for almost $200 cheaper

    • Japan has cheaper MSRP?

      • +2

Yeah, but it's locked down to just Japanese language.

    • +1

But Japan one is Japanese only

  • +1

I searched the high skies and low seas but I still couldn't find the bargain/deal. Soon, people will create a post every time a new console or game is released…

  • nobody needs an ozbargain post to know about the switch 2 release, and nobody needs to know that it will be RRP at major retailers

  • +1

    RRP is not a deal

  • -1

Haven't had a Nintendo console since the Wii so personally worth it for me with the backwards compatibility.

  • -1

Rrps can be valid deals. LIKE THIS ONE

  • RRP is NEVER a deal. Do better.

  • need some gift card deals

  • Preorder isn't a bargain….hell it isn't even discounted

  • +1

Real dick move. They region locked a Japan version priced at ~$550 and then asking us Gaijin to pay $699 is just robbery.

Not to mention who region locks something in 2025?

    • Japanese company only cares about Japan, what a surprise.

    • The whole reason they're doing that is because most of the Japanese population either don't speak or never will want to learn English or other languages meaning there is no point selling more languages to their own people. The Japanese language only version is roughly $500 AUD and the all languages edition sold on the Nintendo Store in Japan is roughly $700 AUD.

This isn't a region locking thing, it's a "we've given up on getting Japanese people to learn other languages" kind of thing.

      • But how does not including the ability to change languages on the device reduce its cost of production in any way (especially by $150)? It's just a different software/ROM loaded onto the same device. They've already paid all the translators and writers to come up with all the translated text either way.

No, they've removed the other languages from the Japanese model to discourage people from grey importing it to other countries.

    • Real dick move of taking care of your own country over people overseas who take politics way too seriously?

      Yeah sure

  • +1

The one positive thing I can see with the high prices is the motivation to jailbreak the console will be extra high.
