Random Facts on the original Nintendo Switch Launch
The Switch was officially released on March 3, 2017, worldwide in Japan, most English-speaking and Western markets and in the United Arab Emirates.[48] It was released with an MSRP of ¥29,980 in Japan, US$299.99 in the United States, £279.99 in the United Kingdom, and A$469.95 in Australia; with standardized pricing for the European market varying.[49][50][51] The set includes a Switch console, a dock; left and right Joy-Con controllers and accompanying straps; a Joy-Con grip, an AC power adapter and an HDMI cable.[52][53] There were two Switch bundles available at launch, one with grey Joy-Con and one with neon red and blue Joy-Con.[54] Nintendo feared that a higher price would harm sales, which prompted them to not include any additional hardware or games.

          I know. I can read

          • +1

@belongsinforums: No what I mean is Japan also has the normal model with all languages included for 69980 yen/$700 AUD. Their Japanese language only one is $500, meaning no other languages on it.

            • @WinterStar: So just buy the Japanese one

              • @belongsinforums: Sure if you can read Japanese but what about the people that can't? You can't really be telling people to buy a console they can't even read, right?

                • @WinterStar: All's i said is it's closer to $500 in Japan. Many games like mario kart don't require reading to play

  • -6

everything should be $2 and made at a loss. deal! /s

    RIP

definitely not a deal at RRP

my first negative vote ever despite owning DS/Gamecube and NS

    Not a deal 1: RRP

Not a deal 2: Cheaper elsewhere

    • -1

      same price at jb???

      • +14

        Its .95c cheaper

    • +35

This obsession with 4k and max fps and bullshit like RT has made gaming into a pile of shit.

    • +4

Nintendo has never been about good hardware and graphics, why would they change their strategy now? It's always been cheap, old hardware.

No one buys a Nintendo console for top of the line specs. They buy it for the games, and just deal with the hardware because they've got no choice.

Thanks Nintendo, both hate and love you.

      • +4

It's always been cheap, old hardware.

        Cheap for them, not us.

        • +1

          Yes, that's what I mean.

Nintendo do what they want, people still buy their consoles for their games.

They live in a different bubble compared to Microsoft and Sony. Nintendo has never tried to compete with other consoles. They've always been for a different audience.

    • +2

maybe because portability and battery life are more important in a portable handheld that can also dock

    • +8

Not everyone is a sweaty basement king obsessed with frame rates. Not sure you are the target market here.

    • -8

You blokes commenting below me are the reason our population will only ever get drip fed incremental updates and improvements.

I mean for Christ sake they didn’t even put in an OLED screen when their updated version 1 did. What a joke.

There is nothing neckbeard about wanting 120hz refresh rate because that’s a massive noticeable difference from 60hz. Beyond that, yeah couldn’t care less especially for cartoon games.

      • +6

The vast majority of the target audience for the Switch have no idea what this means. It’s aimed at families and casual gamers. Half of them probably still have motion smoothing enabled on their tv.

Even amongst PC gamers, the segment overlapping most with redditors, people playing at 1440p/144+ or 4K/>60 are the minority. Most people pay less for their PC than the cost of a basic 4070S-class card.

People who care about refresh rates are a niche of a niche. Doesn’t make your concerns invalid. Just not concerns shared by most of the population.

    • +3

Bro I still play games like River Raid, Columns, Sonic 2, Outrun, original MK trilogy, Street Fighter 2, etc because they're fun, and not because they'll give me an eye-gasm playing them. Better graphics doesn't mean better game, as has been proven millions of times over in gaming history.

      • -4

Another jumping to comment before taking the time to read what’s been said - no one’s complaining about graphics quality.

The issue at hand is a Switch 2 is released 8 years later when 4K 120hz refresh rate is the standard of gaming, and they’ve decided to stick with 60hz among other downfalls all the while nearly doubling the launch price. Yeah must just be inflation.

Queue idiotic Nintendevotees comments defending their honour and why they should gouge prices for arguably almost no technological upgrade.

        • +5

4K 120hz refresh rate is the standard of gaming

And yet most Steam users are still on 1080p… I guess this kind of thinking is people will pay 4 figures for a GPU.

        • +5

Bro thinks 4k 120fps is the standard, I smell a greasy pcmr kid.

You're complaining about Nintendo not releasing bleeding edge hardware…bro they've re-released the same 3 ip games God knows how many times now. This is Nintendo were talking about.

None of their audiences care about 4k 120fps,that sh*t doesn't matter when your on the bus or half drunk playing party games. Kids don't won't even know wtf those specs mean.

  • +11

    Where’s the bargain?

  • +6

Upvote for the effort put into the post. At least EB is only requiring a $50 deposit, JB requires full payment.

People complaining about the price of the games might want to look into how much NES, SNES and N64 games were in Australia for a bit of context.

I’m sure this post will be flooded with negativity and lots of people feeling the need to announce to the Ozbargain community that they will not be buying a Switch 2 at launch, but new Nintendo hardware and games in just a couple of months is great!

    • +11

Buying the launch switch has the highest chance of being able to mod/hack it down the line and get free games.

    • look into how much NES, SNES and N64 games were in Australia for a bit of context.

That doesnt add context. In fact it's the opposite of context, you're pulling the pricing then out of it's time and applying it to our current economic environment

      • That doesnt add context. In fact it's the opposite of context, you're pulling the pricing then out of it's time and applying it to our current economic environment

        lol, what?!

        • The time and economic environment in the 90s was completely different from today.

You're asking people to compare apples to oranges in some kind of weird defense of Nintendo's current pricing.

    • +1

People complaining about the price of the games might want to look into how much NES, SNES and N64 games were in Australia for a bit of context.

Yeah yeah, it's cheaper if you account for inflation.

But if you're accounting for the inflation, why not account for wage growth? Or the lack thereof, rather.

And if you're accounting for the inflation, you can't leave out market size.

Nintendo made big profits when games were $100 in the 90s. Now that the market is literally more than 100 times bigger, they could charge $1 and make the same amount on each game.

      • why not account for wage growth?

Are you suggest wages haven’t gone up significantly since the 80’s?

And if you're accounting for the inflation, you can't leave out market size.

What market? Nintendo is its own market. It doesn’t directly compete with PS, Xbox, Steam etc.

Nintendo made big profits when games were $100 in the 90s. Now that the market is literally more than 100 times bigger, they could charge $1 and make the same amount on each game.

Are you being serious? The NES and SNES sold 50 - 60 million units each. The Switch, which has been an overwhelming success, has sold 150 million units. The “market”, which in Nintendo’s case consists of only Nintendo, is nowhere near 100 times larger.

Do you think game development costs have remained the same or are exponentially higher since the NES?

they could charge $1 and make the same amount on each game.

        lol.

        • +1

Why are you out here shilling for a corporation?

If people think it's expensive, why are you here arguing?

  • +4

No oled screen version either :(

    • +6

that will come in in 4 years time.

  • +10

    What is the discount?

    • +2

95¢ if you buy from JB Hi-Fi.

      • +1

the interest you get on $650 over 2 months, that stays in your account, is higher than the 95cents you could potentially save when you go with jb.

        • Might not be the case for april and may

  • +2

Nae a bargain, just a preorder. This is a pretty shocking RRP for a Nintendo console.

  • +8

RRP is not a deal (at least when everyone is selling it for RRP).

  • +3

For everyone looking for a bargain

JB has it 95c off RRP

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/nintendo-switch-2-console…

    • -2

JB has also denied using gift cards for consoles in the past

      • +2

Just pre-ordered mine in store using 5x gift cards

  • +9

    Not a deal.

  • +10

RRP is not a deal and its likely not going to sell out. Also available from JB, and BigW

  • +9

RRP for a pre order is most certainly not a deal

  • Can order at JB and use discounted home/him cards for 10% off if you have them.

  • +2

    RRP is not a deal.

you now also going to have to pay for game demos and on top of that
games are now 127.36 for digital and 143.27 for physical copies… yeah I am good thanks

  • +2

Can easily get 10% off when you buy those ultimate gift cards that often go on sale in the supermarket

    • -3

      10% off?

PC gamers have been buying all their AAA games for 50 to 90% off in steam sales for more than a decade.

100% on Epic (including GTA 5, Control, Bioshock remasters, Arkham trilogy, Dishonoured, Tomb Raiders, Death Stranding, Borderlands, etc).

      10% off $120 games?

      Tell 'em their dreaming.

  • +6

    not a deal mate

  • +6

    $699 is not a bargain.

  • +1

Is the $50 deposit refundable if you change your mind and want to cancel?

    • +1

Yes it is, but if you are picking it up in-store, you have to contact that specific store (either over the phone or go in person) to cancel and refund.

  • +7

Wait is the screen not OLED? Sounds like a step backwards

    • +1

This is what I’m trying to talk about above, and getting smashed with comments defending their honour.

Another company that’s gone down the drain.

    • +1

Why? It's the only thing Nintendo can update when they re-release the console 3 years from now.

You think Nintendo cares about its audiences or "keeping the price down"?

    • Im guessing that the OLED screen would have driven up the price. OLED's are expensive and are being saved by manufacturers for PC monitors to get the most profit.

    • Yep, no OLED, and $100 more than it should be.

    • More of a sideways step.

Not getting OLED, but its larger, higher resolution, is 120Hz, has VRR support and is HDR support. Digital Foundry theorising whether it’s MiniLED to get that HDR support too.

VRR is a huge benefit over any Switch 1 panels especially given the power profile of mobile devices means that fixed 60fps isn’t always guaranteed. Now, if it’d had those capabilities AND been OLED, that’d be amazing. But some of those new specs are pretty big improvements in their own right.

  • wow $699 … oof! i thought maybe 499-599 … but nothing surprises me anymore

  • +1

    $110 a game……………..

  • -2

    only 1080p? lolwtf.

    • +1

and not even OLED. things like that are a tad turnoff for me knowing they plan on an OLED edition in a couple of years

    • +4

The steam deck is only 1280x800. Don't hear you complaining about that.

      • it's shit too

  • +6

This inst a deal, why bother posting it?

  • +7

“bEiNg AvAiLAbLe mAkEz iT a bArGaiN!!1!”

Really… this shit again? This in nothing more than a public service announcement, not a “deal”.

Also, “cheaper elsewhere”. JB have it for 95¢ less…

  • +3
  • +5

This is the opposite of a bargain.

  • +1

Just take note that the games bought at the store are just "key-card" only, doesn't contain full game. You still need to download the games from the server!

    https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/the-nintendo-switch-2-…

  • +2

ebgames is definitely the way to preorder. $50 is much fairer offer than locking up $699 with JB. If you want to go homebrew and all the benefits that come with it you have to get the 1.0 firmware and stay offline. But I also think the price is pretty sh** and the game is just a digital copy, so you can't even recoup some of the cost when you are done playing.
Keep it in box and keep the receipt if homebrew takes too long just return it or just delay collection as long as possible.

shit prices = max shit behavior and Nintendo won't see a single dime from me in the future.

    • +2

shit prices = max shit behavior and Nintendo won't see a single dime from me in the future.

Taking inflation into account, Nintendo is charging the same for the Switch 2 that they were for the NES, SNES and N64. Not to mention, first party games were $120 back then! So where’s the “shit prices = Max shit behaviour”?

      • +2

The price increase is 50% in the US from the previous version 8 years ago. The rest is the rubbish AUD not Nintendo

  • +1

    how much?

  • Just. No.

  • +1

Didnt realise the original switch is worth so little as a trade in. $200 and have to include 4 games as well?!? May be worth the hassle to sell it privately

  • +1

If only I can buy it with JP region price

  • -2

what's the reselling price for the first 2 weeks?

  • Is it possible to pay the rest($649.95) with multiple ultimate him GCs, in-store when I collect?

    • yeah no dramas just like any other purchase

      • cheers mate

  • +3

    RRP is not a deal

  • +2

The 4 games + the console for $200 off is a bit steep. It's the 4 games that breaks it. If they're games with actual trade in value you'd get more selling them privately

    • +1

Yeah they really are a bit scammy this time

    • +1

Usually the console trade in deals are pretty decent, arguably the PS5 Pro one last year one was very good in terms of what they valued the PS5 as. Main difference being the PS5 being traded in has more prospect in terms of ongoing support for the coming years.

      This offers garbage however.

Guess they don’t want to sit on a lot of Switch second hand stock when the replacement console does everything it can and will have longevity. Probably best to trade privately if they don’t drop a better deal in the mean time.

  • +1

Quite Pricey for that type of hardware! That Mario Kart looks good though!
    Thanks OP

  • +2

    PS5 OZRRP days are back

    • +2

If you include PC gaming GPUs, they never really left

  • +2

The old gen on sale is more of a bargain than this, $700 for a LCD? Steam deck OLED only $200 away.

  • +1

I would probably bite, but the fact that only some switch games get free upgrades means I'm paying more to then pay more. Tired of that shit with PS5. Will probs wait for switch 2 oled.
