I don’t understand why Lenovo would make this kind of garbage. The CPU is 4 cores and 8 threads, and the GPU is on par with the years-old 6800U. It’s not that this setup can’t handle gaming or office work, but slapping an old CPU with a new name and putting it in a so-called next-gen product is just ridiculous. Consumers aren’t idiots.

slapping an old CPU with a new name and putting it in a so-called next-gen product is just ridiculous. Consumers aren’t idiots.

Isn't that kind of what Nintendo did with the Switch 2 using an Arm Cortex A78C CPU from 2020?

I haven't seen anyone here complaining about that one yet so it either doesn't matter all that much or consumers are in fact idiots :)

        • +7

Isn't that kind of missing the point? There are literally tens of thousands of different PC configurations on the market—have you ever seen a major game studio specifically optimize their game for just one of them?

The Switch 2 is likely getting special treatment not because of its hardware, but because it's a single, fixed platform with a massive install base. CDPR spent serious effort optimizing Cyberpunk 2077 for it—and the result looks surprisingly better than what you'd get on an RTX 3060 in many cases. And that’s with a chip that’s supposedly weaker than an RTX 2050.

Do you really think a handheld like the Legion Go S, running Windows or SteamOS and being just another niche x86 device, is going to get that kind of attention from AAA developers? Come on. If you’re comparing the two and expecting the same level of support, then honestly… (Mod: Removed personal attack)

I would say hardware is much more important in PC gaming than for Nintendo. Since developers aren't going out of their way for a single spec optimised piece of software for PC gaming, no matter the config. In fact using aged underclocked hardware benefits consoles since devs don't have to reach so high (most can't anyway these days). It's really not the same thing.

        • Isn't that kind of what Nintendo did with the Switch 2 using an Arm Cortex A78C CPU from 2020?

Geezus that's a bit piss poor.

          • +1

@Drakesy: Yeah the Switch 2 uses a custom NVIDIA Tegra T239 which only needs a half-decent CPU as it's just a console with a super-lightweight OS not doing a pile of background processing.
So far it's been found to be a more than capable CPU for all the exclusives Nintendo are going to want to put on it. On the other hand, the GPU is pretty nuts with all the extra Nvidia tech like DLSS that none of the other handhelds are getting.

    • yeah I am pretty happy with my 1tb OLED steam deck that cost me about 1000 bucks delivered from Valve. Steam OS is far superior in battery life than windows is.

      • +4

Steam OS is officially supported on this as well

      • I paid about the same for a Legion Go. The weak battery life is my biggest complaint.
Hoping Lenovo gives the device a ROG Ally X-style glow up for the 2nd iteration.
Double the battery and 50% more RAM would make a massive difference.
A gamer-centric version of Windows also wouldn't go astray.

The only thing I didn't like about the Steam Deck was the weird af screen resolution.

  • this or switch 2? hmm

    • This

    • +18

Depends, switch 2 if you want to play first party Nintendo games, this for anything else.

      • +1

But you'll also be able to play them on this, right? ;) ;) ;)

        • +1

Eventually but not at the moment.

          • @MomentOfTruss: Definitely not eventually lol.

You're gonna need to need hardware a few times more powerful than the thing you're emulating and this Lenovo thing will just be in a similar ballpark. You can try to emulate the Switch 2 on a desktop PC some time in the next 3 years

    • +9

Depends if you’re after Nintendo first party games (Mario, Zelda, Pokemon etc..), if so then you have no choice but to get the Switch 2. If you’re after PC games, then the Lenovo will have the access to the whole catalogue. Switch 2 will probably get SOME of the really popular PC titles like Elden ring, Fortnight and run it better (performance wise). Pros and cons to each. Personally if you’re after a PC handheld I would look for a second hand ROG Ally as it’s cheaper but has a better chip to run games with higher FPS. Bonus: on PC handheld you might want to consider installing the SteamOS for a more streamline console like experience with better battery/performance while trading off some games compatibility ie Xbox Game pass, multiplayer games.

      • Give it a few months and emulators will be running switch 2 games better than the switch itself.

        • +3

You'd hope so, but potentially wishful thinking; the Switch 2 doesn't look to be nearly as easy to crack as the Switch 1 was.

Switch 2's more powerful than a PS4, and yet we still haven't seen a PS4 Emulator that can perform respectably.

          • @NipVikingSando: Is it more powerful that PS4 pro?

            • +3

@CptnObvious: Not sure if you’re being genuine or playing into the memes

But if just looking at raw numbers, it sits about PS4 power undocked, and halfway between the PS4 and the Pro when docked.

I’ve seen skme speculation that the more modern architecture and features (DLSS namely) might lift it to Pro power, but seems wishful imo

        • +6

If you think you will be emulating Switch 2 on a system which is roughly the same in terms of performance I got bad news for you lmao

        • -1

          Remind me in 3 months

        • +1

Yeah nah, no way that's possible. The Switch emulator Yuzu took 10 months after the initial launch to release (very impressive). It was in no state better than the original hardware at that stage.
Also the Switch 2 hardware is much more powerful than the original Switch. So even if they somehow released a fantastic emulator in a few months, you're going to need some beefy as hardware to even think about running it. No way any handheld would be able to run it.

    • +1

I paid less for the standard Z1 extreme ROG Ally. I'd say wait it out unless you're really keen. From what I recall this processor is non extreme and is roughly the same (or less) as the Z1 extreme and M$ have announced a handheld in collaboration with ASUS running a more gaming centric version of windows.

Switch 2 will have a better user experience but you'll be paying more for games in the long run unless it gets cracked and you want to be naughty.

  • +1

Get the Legion Go Z1E over this.

    • +3

might as well wait for Z2 Extreme devices at this point tbh, their release is imminent.

      • +1

Well the Z2E isn't going to be available at the 799 price point.
The Z1E is regularly at it and has even been lower.

Also not sure why my comment got neg'd when the z1e is better than the Z2 Go and can be had at the same price point.

        • Sure, but you could argue that when Z2E comes Z1E will be even cheaper. I guess like all things in life, it depends if you want a device RIGHT NOW or you can wait a bit.

          P.S. I didnt neg you.

    • I haven't been able to find anywhere to buy this in Aus, only offers for the Z2 Go models

      • Might not be on sale for that much right now. But it has gone that low multiple times in the past, so it's inevitable.

  • Good deal or nah? I am guessing this is entry level at the price? I haven't looked much at Steam decks lately.

    • This, with SteamOS installed. It’s mainly the screen for me.

  • +1

Don't forget to install SteamOS on this.

    • is this the version that comes with Windows or SteamOS installed?

      • +1

It looks like the Windows version. SteamOS is in dark purple.

  • +1

will this also suffer Lenovo's Low Temperature Solder issue?

  • Good price, but the performance would better suit older and indie games. A bit wild that it is already on such a steep discount, I think RRP is around $1200

    • the windows version got a really bad rap for low battery and performance compared to the SteamOS version. Not a surprise they're panick discounting it to move it.

  • +1

Waiting for rog xbox ally 2

  • +2

Better off with something with a Z1 Extreme for this price, this CPU is slow

    • This. It seems like we miss out on 32gb version of Legion Go S so there's no point in getting this over something with Z1E chip.

  • I'm tempted by this but why not get a laptop instead at this price and play the games?

    • Yes, you can get a cheap gaming laptop and it'll be more versatile and future proof. These units are good to play when you're in bed. But then they still need USB-C cable/anchor like a laptop charger only smaller.

      • Have you got an example? I'd love to get a laptop like that. I ended up copping the original LGo for this price cause I could never find a <14" laptop with decent gaming performance for a similar price. So many of the laptops that have deals end up being massive 15.6" 2kg monsters.

        • +1

No 14" gaming laptop will be on the cheap. However, I've seen cheap used Acer Nitro 5 laptop Core i5 10th gen & RTX3060 selling as little as $500 which IMO is a bargain. These handheld PC gaming have a limited lifespan due to thier hardware. They may play a few AAA games in low 1080p settings now, however give it a few updates, it'll get slower & slower. They're great for portability, but they have thier caveats.

    • +1

For portability? Whipping out a laptop on a plane to play game is far more of a hassle than playing on something like this.
I took my recently purchased Legion Go on a long haul flight recently and it was a god-send.
If laptop was my only option, I wouldn't have bothered and just stuck to watching movies to pass time.

      • What was the battery life like? Are the removable controls just a gimmick?

        • Battery life was irrelevant as planes have AC plugs.

Battery life on these isn't great. Wouldn't expect anymore 1.5 hours if you play AAA titles. I don't play small indie games so I don't know how much battery improves.

Removable controls are handy if you don't want to be holding the whole unit in your hand as they are relatively hefty.

          • @keejoonc: Good to know. I like the idea of the removable controls. I would think that there would maybe be 3rd party replacements if something were to happen to them… although I don't think it's likely.

I'm keeping an eye on Lenovo. ROG Ally X seems to be the best one to get (it seems MS think so too)… but I'd like something where I could replace the controls if I wanted. It's one of the best things I've learnt using a Switch.

            • @BadGiraffe: ROG Ally X is far too expensive IMO.

I only bought my Legion Go because I came across a near new used one for $700. I wouldn't shell out for a brand new one, let alone for a ROG Ally X, which I think was around $1400 on sale last time I checked?

      • Good to know. Thank you. Outside of using it on planes what's the use case at home?

  • So there is more room for price to come down once SteamOS version is out, HODL …

  • this, steamdeck oled 512gb at $900 or used ally x for $950?

    • v1 of the switch 1, overclocked

    • Steam deck hardware is too old. I wouldn't pay $900 for that.

  • I’ve got an og lcd deck and wouldn’t mind something a bit more new to run some more modern stuff.

I think this is still rdna2 thou which is really strange. The naming standard for these skus is wild

  • Pretty good deal but anyone can tell me about performance is good?
