  • "RAM Configuration 2 x 12GB"
    Surely that's wrong, right?

Wish it has but bigger screen size…

  • How's the real life battery life for this laptop? I can't find any reviews online

    • Same question, 60Wh battery.
1.39KG is a little bit heavy to carry.

    • I have the pro version (fair bit bigger battery 84Wh and AI 350, similar OLED scren) and the battery life has been very good. My use is pretty light (and brightness is low, dark mode enabled) but it takes around 3.5-4 hours to drain from 80%-60%. Haven't had an opportunity to use it beyond that

    • Especially the battery life under Linux.
If a Linux laptop gets as good or better power management as the MacBook Pro, I’ll happily buy that instead.

    14" WUXGA (1920x1200) OLED 400nits Glossy,
I was all excited when I saw 400nits, but "Glossy" kills it for me.

do like aftermarket matte film covers exist or not really

      • It is still going to degrade the quality of the output.

        • +5

You could say the same thing about buying a laptop with a matte display…

          • -1

@Butt Scratcher: A matte display is designed as such, and avoids all the unwanted reflections from a glossy panel. Top of the range photographic screens are matte for good reason.

            • +5

@whats up skip: That sounds like a bunch of assumptions you are making.

If you consider how a matte display works, it works in the same way as a matte film would work. They reduce the glare by scattering light, which inevitably alters the picture quality for the worse

              • @Butt Scratcher: Yes, but a factory fitted one is far more likely to do a better job as it would be matched to the display underneath.

  • 840m not very good for gaming, right?

    • +1

      Worse than the 780m equivalent

      • ? 840 > 780

        • again there's like a few levels / tiers.

the old 780m is still going to be bettee than 840m

860m would be slightly closer but still worse.

  • How does this compare with a Macbook Air M3 as an upgrade from Macbook Air 2017

    • The main thing this has going for it is price, OLED screen and a bit more RAM (though many will say with MacOS optimisation the RAM difference won't be felt much). Otherwise, the M3 is a very powerful and efficient processor and the Macbook screens are still great as long as you don't mind the gloss - which is also an issue on this laptop. Some of the deals on the M3 have also been pretty good so if you are in the Apple ecosystem the Macbook is likely the better choice on discount.

Not sure why I got the neg. Don't worry I would never buy a Mac myself (personal preference) but at prices like the Costco deals, they are hard not to recommend

      • RAM matters for AI - that's why it's absent at Apple & cannot work for older devices, while few years older other brands already have AI ;)

    • -1

If you're a Mac user and have been for last 8 yrs stick with the Mac 🙂

Recommend extending the warranty… mobo on mine just died right on 2 years old.

    • Try statuary warranty claim?

  • These are alright
    But definitely not Slim

They should call it IdeaPad Phat

  • what fps would this run league of legends at?

    • treefiddy

  • The outlet store had the high specs refurb for the same price. I forgot to order and gone :(

  • If being lighter and thinner isn't that important, but battery life and performance is and I don't mind that modest difference in price, would a Ideapad 5 running Snapdragon Plus X 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD be a better choice for me?

Bought this deal on a whim and received it yesterday, happy to see that the memory is upgradable if needed (it's under a clip on metal shield) and an unpopulated 2280 nvme slot allows for further storage expansion.
Also a big plus is that it's only 5 exposed torx heads holding the bottom case cover on with nice reinforced plastic clips that don't seem like they are going to break any time soon. No need to pry up on pads adhered to the shell to find screws.

Overall build quality is nice, but the trackpad definitely leaves something to be desired with the left and right click. It's clicky but also spongey at the same time - hard to describe but not what I was expecting.
