      Is it really an EV?

      • +8

tbf its still a car and its still carrying you and your kids at 110km/h max and i feel if you can afford a $60k suv then $238 a year is pretty fair

also maybe ask how much this thing is to insure

i'd be surprised if its 'only' $2,380!

        • +8

I have a Tesla. It can safely carry my kids without the BS charges above.

          My insurance is only $1200.

        • I thought insurance would be expensive but some are giving EV discounts…

Rac charged me $1400 for a brand new EV car with $400 excess

My other 5 year Honda HRV worth less than half is going for $1100 with $850 excess

          • @MaxHashrate: What are the cheapest EV insurers in your mind? I've been surprised at the uplift over my regular ICE cars

        • I paid $1380 with NRMA for my LR G6 (quotes from Rollin, Budget Direct, Allianz and others were around the same price)

        • Insurance was $1400 for me NSW with NRMA

vs Tesla Model Y – Recommended Maintenance

(From Tesla Owner’s Manual & Support)

Every 10,000 km → Rotate tyres

    Every 20,000 km / 12 months → Clean & lubricate brake calipers (cold/wet climates)

Every 2 years → Replace cabin air filter

Every 3 years → Replace HEPA/carbon filter (if fitted)

Every 4 years → Replace A/C desiccant bag

Every 4 years → Brake fluid health check

👉 Tesla does not require annual servicing – these are just recommended checks/replacements.

    • +5

I get there are not many moving parts, but you would be foolish not to inspect wheels, suspension, brakes etc. These are not light cars after all, and there are still parts susceptible to wear and tear.

      • Do it at your own discretion with your EV if you are worried especially if you have spare money to burn.

      • +1

You barely break in a Tesla as the motor does 90% of the breaking. As @Ebisu said, it's just rotating tyres and suspension will last you basically the life of the car.

      Model 3 Owner here 2021 Now @ 334,890.09 kilometers

My only major replacement parts have been aircon compressor & suspension components, everything else has been the normal tyres, aircon filters & window wipers,

      Compressor @ 330,000km
      Suspension @ 345,000km

The two major items I have since replaced added up to around $6,000 in costs, but my usage is on the extreme mileage type & I wouldn't think many people do the kind of travel I do on our roads.

        Tell that to Nissan

        • In 2024, XPeng delivered 190,068 vehicles and posted a net loss of $0.79 billion, implying roughly $4,160 lost per vehicle; by comparison, Nissan sold about 3.35 million vehicles in calendar 2024 and reported a FY2024 net loss (year ended Mar 31, 2025) of about $4.5 billion, which works out to around $1,340 per vehicle—so Nissan’s total loss was far larger in absolute terms, but XPeng’s per-car loss was roughly three times higher.

There’s no doubt that XPeng will go bankrupt before Nissan.

          • @PeppaCat: Now do 2025

          • +1

@PeppaCat: XPENG has a AAA credit rating (highest possible) while Nissan has a BB- credit rating (below investment grade or "junk" as is the technical term).

But thanks for your robust analysis on comparing the two companies. You should definately sell your house and buy Nissan shares.

            • @ialam99: I won’t buy either of them. But if you think XPENG is good, then why don’t you sell all your home and buy XPENG stocks?

          • @PeppaCat: @PeppaCat that's a fairly ignorant evaluation of a company's financials - the most valuable car company in the world by far has had far more loss years than in profit years.. I suppose Tsla is going bankrupt any second now too?

            • @V2L: In 2024, Tesla delivered 1.79 million vehicles and earned an average gross profit of around $7,900 per vehicle, reflecting a ~17% gross margin; overall, with net margins averaging around 13%, Tesla maintained healthy per-car profitability compared to traditional automakers.

So what’s your logic here? For each car sold in 2024, XPENG loss $4,160 and Telstra earn $7,900. And you are thinking telstra is going to bankrupt and XPENG is doing well?

Well, I really suggest you to go with
ialam99 to sell the house and put all your money in XPENG

              • -1

@PeppaCat: Tesla only started making a profit in 2020 on their cars, and that wasn't from selling cars, it was mostly from selling emissions credits (ie. propped up by government subsidies). by your logic we should have dumped Tesla and loaded up on Nissan shares in 2020? profitability is a poor metric for a growth / tech company's finances - in fact xpeng has one of the healthier balance sheets with current zero net debt compared to Nissan's 82billion.

I do have XPEV shares, like I do TSLA, and many others. putting all your eggs in one basket however would be pure stupidity, like buying Nissan shares currently

    • It's probably one of the hardest things to pick as I can guarantee not all who will come, will stay.

With all the various groupings and brands, I'll say probably about 5-6 groups will stay in the long term. The things to look out for are, does this brand produce good quality cars; it's sales numbers, not just domestically but internationally too and is it able to also innovate.

    • -2

Nonsense. Biggest market with Biggest maker is the best guarantee than others.

      • +1

Holden were near the top for so many years, but their product line up started to be crowded with many less than stellar products and now they've been out of the Australian market for more than half a decade.

For Longevity you need repeat business. If you don't offer good value or reasonable quality (It doesn't have to be Lexus quality, just sufficient to complete 300,000 kms regularly with proper maintenance),
you aren't going to be getting that repeat business, which increases the chance of a brand being a short-term one.

Of the brands in Australia I see SAIC (MG) and BYD staying for a while. There will be other ones join them but I could easily see a few go.

        • GWM (Tank, Haval, Canon, Ora) and Geely (Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Zeekr) i dont see going anywhere.

Chery seem to be doing pretty well now as well.

The influx of Chinese manufacturers coming into Australia is a result of both economic (Chinese new car market cooled in 2024 - manufacturers have production capacity) and political (Tariffs from old mate over in USA - they've gotta send the cars somewhere) and aspirations of China to become a larger world power (America's auto industry helped it do the same 75-100 years ago).

If any of the above changes, they could pull out in an instant. The AU Gov will be a toothless tiger trying to get a foreign manufacturer to honor consumer guarantees

To be fair, this applies to ANY manufacturer (Hi Citroen) but the "traditional" ones have more than just new car sales to lose if they pull out - hundreds of thousands if not millions of cars floating around that need to be serviced/spare parts/etc.. so there is a little more meat in the sausage to sustain them if the market/economy/poltics pivots/changes.

As time goes on, Xpeng/Zeekr/Deepal/Leapmotor/Chery and friends will be safer bets as they build dealer networks, sales, service, parts incomes etc.. but this will take time. MG/BYD are more established due to sales volume so less risk but still risk involved. Tesla too.

2025 is shaping up to be a better market for EVs in China. Will that influence this?

Will I take the risk? Not at this stage. You might get a great car for 40-50k but if that vehicle becomes a mechanical write off due to a manufacturer exit and nobody wanting to/being able to repair it, you've then got to write off that initial cost and find the money to buy another one. I'm not in a position to do that. As i said to a friend recently, i'm too poor to buy a cheap car.

      Sorry - wall of text…

      • Define cheap

      • -1

Massive consolidation is inevitable. Its happened in almost every industry that the CCP identified as strategic and flooded global markets with subsidied supply to become a leader and destroy or severely weaken the foreign legacy players. The next phase is where they reduce the subsidy taps, let the market play out and identify what strategic partnerships/takeovers they want and let the dead weight die. The number of distinct manufactuers will radically reduce. Nothing speculative about it. This cycle has happened many times over there for other industries. I hope xpeng make it out the other side and are still around in 10 years as they are one few automakers over there i actually like their design and styling.

    • Will you be there in the country in next 5-100 years?

I was really keen on the G9 for a family hauler, as we always pack our Mazda 6 to the roof. We've always had coloured cars.
The australian website only has white silver black. I cant bring myself to drive a car without an actual colour, way too boring.

      • +1

Agree. I am looking at the BYD Seal, and while the blue colour is somewhat interesting, I would kill for a nice green.

  • Does the 10 year warranty include the battery and to what level can the battery drop in the ten years for it to be covered by warranty

    • Crucial question - Paired with 'how is the battery cooled'. Heat in Australia is the biggest battery killer.

      • +1

XPENG provides an 8-year manufacturer's warranty on the battery, with an optional 2-year extension available to bring the total to 10 years for extended coverage. This standard 8-year warranty backs key battery components for long-term peace of mind and is an option for those planning long-term ownership or high usage…

there's no way they can do that if the battery isnt actively cooled heated

        this aint nissan

    • Basically from what I’ve heard it needs to be a critical failure in the battery to be claimed under warranty I.e dead or does not charge.
Tesla I believe is the only EV that states if your battery dips below 70% or has a failure during the 8 year warranty period they replace it.
I had the same issue with BYD when I was looking at the sealion 7, they could not tell me what would be classified as a battery replacement other then critical failure, basically battery dead and doesn’t charge.

      • Geely states below 70% degradation as well.

        • That really should be the standard for all EV’s. To not state that and hope customers just buy the car not knowing then when they come to claim and knock back a $30K battery replacement is very poor form. The warranty is only as good as the conditions to back you up if something goes wrong.

  • Newer facelift model is out, but not in Australia yet.

  • The longer we wait, the better the prices are going to get.
    Competition is only starting.

    • <insert generic comment here about waiting forever for the next new model>

On a serious note, I think in the next two years, we'll see a major shift towards new EV purchases because there'll be a lot more choice, and at prices very similar to equivalent-sized ICE.

For those not in a hurry for a new car, I'd say wait at least until mid next year

      • There is supposedly a glut of Chinese car production and too many brands all released together in Australia
Hopefully we will see some desperation and price slashing quite soon

        • +1

And it's not just the Chinese cars - VW has just entered the fray with the ID4, cupra tavascan, new macan etc etc

          Choices galore!

  • +1

Do these have V2G? Cheaper than a 87KWh battery install !

    • +1

      Yes

      • +1

this is where you money goes

price up a damn 87kWh home battery and come back to me

admittedly the sub $50k cheapo china ev suvs often have small 50kWh batteries

i did the sums on this and in reality if you have solar cells on your roof you can charge up your 50kWh and run off that for DAYS… assuming you aint blowing away aircon and boiling meats for hours

i would guess solar cells and 87kW would almost let you cut your electric lines and not have to pay supply if you were so brave

        • +1

Just charging and discharging an NMC battery possibly multiple times a day could cause degrading quicker then expected. It would certainly not be covered under warranty of your car.

Probably a fair risk to take though if you can make the economics of it all stack up. So far it seems that EV batteries in the cars that have been built from 2020 onwards seem to be degrading much less than everyone thought.

          • @serpserpserp: If the car has V2G surely it's covered under the warranty. Something to check.

            • @Morven: Lots of cars can do V2G, none of them are under warranty to do it.

It isn't a selling feature of the car. It is if it can be compatible with the hardware to do it in that country (if allowed) and apparently when it is allowed here, G6 should be able to do it.

      • +1

technically they arent V2G capable - they are V2L and V2H capable via a bidirectional charger like Sigenergy.

you'd want a LFP battery for that purpose ideally
