HTC 8X 4G $149 with Telstra No Lock in Plan (Starts at $60) @ JB Hi-Fi *Pls Read Post First*

850

Hi guys n girls,

Sorry, there's no information available on the website right now, but I saw a big banner being displayed in a jb hifi store tonight (didn't take a picture, sorry again!). I'm assuming this started as part of the sale going tonight, and I don't know how long it will run for. Maybe be quick if you want it and you think it's a good deal?

Looks like if you sign up to any Telstra no lock in plan (i think they start off at a minimum of $60), you can buy the HTC 8x outright for only $149 as part of the plan. JB is selling these outright at $504

Good price for a seemingly popular phone here on OzB.
Similar/related post here http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/111093

Plus good way to test the 4G Telstra network, or see what windows phone has to offer, or both!

I'm guessing from their website, only blue is available and I'm also guessing that it will have Telstra software loaded onto it (feel free to confirm this or report otherwise!)

I added the link so you get a general idea of the phone specs.

Hope this comes in handy for someone!

UPDATES

  • Banner at JB Hi-Fi reads "Only $149 When you sign up to a new no lock in $60 plan with Telstra". Looks like you need to be on Telstra's service for at least a month, so $149 + $60 minimum spend. Thanks to @crazycs.
  • Receipt from JB Hi-Fi. Thanks to @unity1

        • LOL funny story bro.
That is why I am always cautious about buying the last item of stock, as it tends to be the "dodgy one" :P

  • Can I install Android OS on this mobile?

    • No

I called Telstra this morning and they said that because I called up straight away and have yet to activate the simcard(in the phone) then the monthly fee will not apply to me.

This means I will save the $60 and the phone only will cost me $150 v $210. Although I was prepared to pay $210 originally but who doesn't want to save money at the end of the day.

I am bugging Telstra to send me a confirmation email stating the cancellation and zero charge because what the customer service lady said contradicts what is in the signed contract, stating that you must pay the first months fee regardless of the time of cancellation.

What happens in a situation like this if Telstra sends me a bill in 30 days? they can argue I signed a contract that clearly stated this stipulation, yet the lady on the phone reassured me there would be no charge incurred and just instructed me "not to use the simcard". I would hate to waste a month of credit and data that I paid for and get charged for it anyway which is a double whammy.

  • +2

I managed to cancel the plan via online chat. It took me 2 mins and I got charged $2 (1 days worth) only.
So phone costs me only $151 :D

    • was this on the business plan too?

      • Don't know what you mean but I chose $60 no lock plan.

  • Awesome! I just cancelled the contract and as I hadn't used the sim yet I received no charge.

I came from a dropped Lumia820 to the HTC 8x and think it's a better phone. The build and feel of the phone is much better IMHO.

For a $149 this deal is an absolute bargain!

    • Can I know if you cancelled your contract via call centre or online chat? Did you use any 'excuse' on closing your account?

      • Bought as prez for loved one, who then decided he/she wants to keep the phone but doesn't wish to retain the line.

      • On the phone. Said my work provided me with a plan.

        • I said their service is poor! hahaha.

    • Still, they might hold you to what you signed in the contract. See my post above. I'm urging them to provide written confirmation of my zero charge, verbally is not good enough for me(especially from a foreign call centre in Manilla) and I'm afraid they will still send us the bill after 30 days, regardless of whether you used the simcard or not. I always err on the side of caution.

  • I'm one-up - got the last unit from Westfield Doncaster 2hrs ago. And just finished Online chat with Telstra "John Ray" - he confirms no charge at all since it hasn't been activated or used (I haven't even detached the SIM from the card). He will send me a reference for the online conversation (confirming cancellation & no charge/waiver), as well as a reference.

    • Good…and take a screenshot of the chat correspondence just in case you need to repudiate it later on.

      • +1

I meant to say "He will send me a transcript of the online conversation …".

I provided my email addy & shortly after received the transcript from "[email protected]", full details including:

"Please do rest assured that you haven't used the SIM, there will be no charges."

"In that case, as you mentioned you haven't inserted the SIM, if there is a charge in the bill, we can waive it for you."

Gave him top feedback on the survey after the chat!

  • +1

Hi guys , just finished chatting with the telstra rep online , if you don't need the plan make sure you don't activate the sim and cancel the plan before 2 days otherwise you will be charged the $60 regardless, Cheers
Ps, Just say you want to cancel it that's it

  • +2

I am not going to believe that there are no charges until the bill arrives. In the contract it says: "You can cancel your plan at any time, but if you cancel you will be charged the full $60 for that month." They don't put statements like that in their contracts for no reason.

    • Exactly. This is what is making me unsure and cautiously optimistic but I won't believe it until after the 30 days pass with a zero $ invoice. I will fight it out with them if it gets to that later on.

  • Telstra online chat confirmed pro-rata charges when you cancel.

  • +1

I was informed there is no Business Plan available for this deal. Picked up one nevertheless.

However, when I use the phone in dark room there is significant leak of light between the bezel and the back cover in the area of those three keys on the front.
Screen set on Automatic adjustment, and still visible. Does anyone of you experience anything like this on your phone? I purchased it yesterday and wonder if this is normal quality issue or just my unit.

    • That doesn't happen on mine.

    • +1

Shizz! Mebbe you got the one that unity1's rep dropped!

  • Just bought one of these… For the other people that bought one, how did they make you sign up to the $60 no lock in plan?
Did you have to give them any credit card details or bank details for the first $60 month fee?

Or do you have to call them up and activate the service and then provide your payment details?

    Thanks

    • The JB guy just took photocopies of my ID and medicare card. He then proceeded to ask me some questions about my occupation, place of residence, etc. No bank or card details were asked of me.

    • +1

Just bought one(not in stock they will bring it from another store) today. I signed the contract but only paid for the phone, the guy didn't ask for payment details for the Telstra plan but said i will receive an email with payment options.I'm planning to cancel tomorrow btw :)

    • The invoice should be received after 1 month since signing the deal.

Its yet to be seen what charge is on the invoice, if any.

  • There is no mention of the phone on the contract. The $60 is billed by Telstra.

  • Just got mine from Fountain Gate. I visited two stores here at Narre Warren but they didn't have the banner. I then asked at one of the store and told the deal was still on. Apparently she had sold about five today.

  • +1

I went into the store at Caringbah and they had no stock, but they found some in Penrith. So I signed up for the plan then and there, paid my money and headed out to Penrith to pick up the phone from the store there.

Unfortunately no one gave me a SIM even though I had gone through the signup process. I just did the online chat thing with Telstra and I was also able to cancel the service and was told there would be no charge because it was a no lock-in plan. I guess we'll see when the 'final bill' arrives.

    • Good to hear you finally found stock.
That is really dodgy of JB to forget to include the sim.
This should be grounds to cancel without charge anyway(even though you won't) because you didn't get what you paid for.

    • Hi bobwm, I went to Caringbah too this arvo and the JB guy told me that someone bought one and headed to Penrith to pick it up :) . He told me I would have to go to Liverpool(2 in stock)but i preferred to wait 2-3 days till they bring it in-store @ Caringbah. I only got the sim card, that's going to be my excuse when I cancel the contract tomorrow :)

    • +2

Also, since I don't think anyone else has mentioned it, the phone is definitely unlocked as I'm using my Optus SIM and it works great.

It does take a Micro SIM so if you're coming from an iPhone 5 with nano SIM you'll need an adapter which I can also confirm fits fine.

      • Thanks for confirming unlock as I will be using Vodafail sim.
Will need to get my simcard converted to a micro style before I can use it though.

  • +1

I contacted the Telstra and they said if you cancel the service anytime within the first month you will be charged $60. It seems it was charged by the number of days in the plan, but now on the Telstra website and on the contract it has a minimum of $60 if cancelled within the month.

They also said that the sim was already activated, so it must of been activated by in

So I would say a lot of people will still be receiving a bill of $60 at the end of the month in the mail… might as well use the credit for the month then cancel when the end of the month is near.

Read the "Things You Need To Know" near the bottom of the page
    http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/plans-rates/no-lock-…

edit: ok scrap all of above talked to someone else they said it was pro rata so cancelling after a day was like $2 but they said there was also a $60 month in advance fee, but when I receive my bill I will have to call/live chat to Telstra and they will waive the $60 fee due to cancelling so early.
Can't see why they couldn't just charge me the $2.

Anyway got the chat record if they try and charge me the $60

    • min $60 is what I read in my contract too but the Telstra livechat assistant told me I will only be charged a pro rata of the days the service was active(1 day)

      • Same here. Confirmed by two assistants.

        • I was told the same thing over the phone. Would anyone be kind enough to send me a chat transcript just incase things get hairy later on?

  • +2

Thanks OP got the last one in Leichardt..! Beautiful phone, still playing with it.Cancelled the telstra contract almost immediately at the same store via live chat in under 5 mins.Asked them to check how much I owed and they said 0 - 2 operators confirmed that. We'll see.In all - Happy with a high end HTC phone for basically 150 bucks

    • +2

It's a nice feeling isn't it and what a beautiful phone. I am in love with mine already :)
If Telstra try to bung on us then I say class action lawsuit OZ-B style!

  • Picked one up from the Boorangoon JB HiFi. Cancelled via Telstra online chat. The representative said it would cost $1.74 or so. Fair enough. Nice phone.

    • Has anyone else cancelled over the telephone? Seems like the pro-rata rate at the time of cancellation is now confirmed.

  • Well, I decided to take a plunge for it, but came out disappointed cause there was no stock at Miranda :( the closest shops they said that still have stock were Liverpool and Penrith, but that's too far for me.

I left my details for pick up some other time. But the sales at JB confirmed that you can cancel straight away (or… stay with them if you really wanted). Can't wait for the call!!

    • Also, what reason are you people giving Telstra for cancelling? just "i don't want it anymore?"

      • +1

You can provide any reason or excuse you like. I think it is merely used for feedback purposes more than anything else.

      • +1

My excuse was honest. I told the chat assistant that my current 60$/ month recharge Telstra prepaid gives me more benefits that the 60$ post paid contract, simple as that. ( Btw he agreed with me)

  • Is anyone getting a case for this phone? I just purchased a nice leather wallet style phone case for $10 on eBay.

it seems that the shutter camera sounds cannot be disabled on these Telstra branded handsets which is annoying.

    • +2

Camera sounds - mandatory for manufacturers under some guidelines/regs as a form of warning to others that pics were being taken (avoid voyeuristic situations!).

      • +1

I can confirm that plugging in headphones and muting the sound does not disable the camera shutter sound.
That is a shame as I was planning to use this phone for that very purpose :P

  • Awesome phone for the money. Just got one. A huge upgrade from my Huawei Ascend Y300.
Total cost should be abt $151. Cancelled one hr after the jb hi fi guy force activated it. Otherwise would have saved $2.

My first windows phone. Seems like an excellent phone. Ported all my gmail contacts, calendars etc.

  • bought 1 this afternoon and cancelled it, then find out I still have to pay $60 the first monthly fees. feel regret cancelled it too early. I have argue with them about pro rata then they told me about the term and condition.

    • who told you this? The CSR on online chat told me that I only have to pay pro rata.

      • yes online csr

"Upon checking, it says on the rules that you will have to pay for the the month if you cancel it
        between the billing cycle."

"You can check the rules in http://telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/plans-rates/no-lock-in-p…

do you have the chat transcript?

        • Yes, I have the whole chat transcript saved. There is no point in posting it as it just contains what I already mentioned.

        • with the first csr, he told me no fees etc, then once i said please cancel it. and I asked him again that i won't get any bill, then he started mentioning that I have to pay the first month bla bla bla :(

        • +2

Sounds like Telstra HO realised their reps were mistakenly giving out pro-rata rates to whoever called up and cancelled early and have now blocked this option , after realising the high volume of daily service cancellations they must be getting hit with. They always wise up eventually :P

What are the rest of you guys gonna do when/if you get hit with a $60 bill?
Shut up and pay it or fight it out with Telstra?

        • Oh dear :( I haven't even got the phone yet!

        • Anyone managed to get Virgin 4G working on the Telstra branded HTC 8X? I am having a nightmare trying to get the issue resolved between Virgin/Telstra/HTC. No one seems to know exactly why 4G won't work on Virgin mobile. I had the same sim card in an unlocked Lumia 820 and the 4G was working great but since putting the sim into the HTC 8X internet does not work even though the correct APN has been set.

        • ask virgin what bandwidth they use for 4g network, 2100 mhz or something else?

        • I believe Optus / Virgin uses 1800 mhz and possibly 2300 mhz

        • +1

What are the rest of you guys gonna do when/if you get hit with a $60 bill?
Shut up and pay it or fight it out with Telstra?

Your bound to the T&C of the contract that you signed

Even if you take it up with the TIO, they will favor Telstra as its clear in the Contract Agreement

        • So you reckon I should chuck in the simcard and just use it? (If they haven't deactivated my number already).

        • worse comes to worst, isn't $209 a good price?

        • Yes, it still is…but this is Ozb after all :P
Telstra really need to properly educate and providing more training to their CSRs.

  • Just picked up one from Campbelltown JB

I had a long chat to the lady there about the whole plan thing.
She was pretty honest and said she would try and cancel as well … but … more than likely under the T&C i would be charged the $60 as it clearly states it on the contract terms for the month.

As most people have said … $209 is still a pretty top notch price for a highly regarded phone.

I'll more than likely chuck in the SIM and use as much of it as i can

    Thanks for the post OP!

  • Han anyone managed to change the language? This is my first windows phone and language option is greyed out

  • -2

I asked JB at World Square and they thought I was crazy. I also asked the telstra shop at Hurstville and they also say there is no such offer. They both appear to revere the HTC 6X as if it was some brand new mobile and rubbish such a low price could be offered on a no contract $60 the problem is, I have no proof and telstra themselves and JB themselves do not have any advertising for customers to refer to, so in the end, it is rubbish since there is no proof.

    • +2

      HTC 6X

Well that might be your problem. It's the HTC 8X.

Have you tried showing them receipts and pictures from this thread?

    • -1

Or get them to call Campbelltown JB Hifi

Thats where i got mine and the advertising is there, they can't bullshit if some stores are doing it.

    • I rang World Square last night and the lady told me that they don't have HTC 8x, but other stores do have it for $149.
Bought the last one at Liverpool JB today as I was told all Sydney CBD stores were sold out.
One of the stores told me that they can order them in for you as well if they are sold out.

      • Don't know how long the wait would be though. I went on Sunday to Miranda JB and they already ran out. They told me the closest stores with stock were Liverpool and Penrith. But now that you've bought the last Liverpool one, I guess they are all out.

Need to wait for new stock :(

  • It was a typo I meant 8X

I just wish you could have been there and watch their staff so confidently dismissing this offer like I made it up.

Oh well, their loss I have decided to go with the new Lumia 925 on Optus better camera more Nokia exclusives and a much better windows 8 phone.

    • That's why most of us ask the OP for a pic and/or a receipt upload. If you read the updated description there is a banner and a receipt pic ;)

    • Ask their staff to check their system, the 149 deal in their system

    • So they made you look like an idiot?
That's the point where you start using more aggressive tactics.

  • Just picked up one from Nunawading, 2 more left there

  • Did anyone else get a Telstra welcome pack in the mail, despite cancelling the service at early notice?

    • +1

yes that is automatically generated by telstra's system even after you have cancelled. you will be fine.

  • Has anyone noticed how poor the auto exposure and contrast of this camera is ? Every picture I take with a bright background bleeds through and makes the subject look washed out and with a halo effect.

    • +1

Try using the camera 360 app to take your shots. I had similar camera results, camera 360 gave a marked improvement.

  • anyone has experience with the mic issue? I m using skype and viber, both of them the mic doesn't work

  • another question, anyone got experience when you goes to window marketplace, why it show arabic language, i have set my time is australia

  • You need to use headset or speakerphone on viber. Same issue I experienced.

  • i have read somewhere it (mic issue on skype) is fixed bybthe GDR2 update

    • i've installed all the available updates and then installed skype. It's working ok, no issues so far

  • +3

I just received an email bill from Telstra. I can confirm that they are only invoicing me by pro rata which is $1.91 for me

    • +1

…below the total it also states payment is not required (ambiguous). So it appears Telstra has made good on their verbal promise of not charging me anything. I think the $1.94 is just to show the pro-rata rate incurred for a single day's billing cycle, before I called up and cancelled.

Nevertheless, I would rather be safe than sorry and pay the $2 and do everything right and relinquish myself from this contract, or else I might get hit with a bigger bill next month, or before they change their mind and decide to charge me the $60.

I would probably recommend that other people do the same and be grateful you are getting pro-rata rate from them.

Maybe they aren't so evil after all :)

      • That's good news! :) I was getting psychologically prepaired to pay the $60 fee anyway :)

    • Same, have been billed $1.935 for 1 day

      • Signed up on 3rd August, Bill Issue Date of 7th August(can already access today in My Account) does not even show the Mobile No. I signed up with. I had signed up on an existing Telstra Account and had the sim/contract cancelled even before it was activated.

Have to wait till next month to confirm I guess.

  • Just a heads up to everyone who hasn't already cancelled the plan with Telstra. It seems to restart on the 9th of every month, might be best to cancel before then to avoid any drama in the future.

    • shouldn't it restart 30 days(aprox.) after activation?

      • That's what I thought to, then I checked my billing on Telstras website and noticed I had 2 days remaining in the billing cycle. Chatted with them about it online and they told me billing restarts on the 9th of every month. Mine was activated 7 days ago, I cancelled and they said I'd just be charged for the 7 days - roughly $14.

  • -1

Anyone got in their bills yet ?

    • +1

One bill is enough for me. Yes, received my bill and was only charged for the 1 day.
