Qicklock at 50% off [$4.99] - Pocket-Sized Gadget That Adds a Lock to Your Door

1800
promo2013

We're going travelling soon and we wanted more security to our hotel room or our overnight train cabins. I first saw the Add-A-Lock on Amazon but it was decidedly too expensive and plastic. Then I found this Qicklock which looks like an Australian company which offers a full steel version at a list price already half of the add-a-lock.

Just got it in the mail today, tested it out and seems to work quite well on most locks (except one of my doors that has a bigger lock which probably won't need it anyway). It's got a credit-card sized profile but about 1cm thick when stored in its own pouch so I think it's quite good to travel with. I'm always impressed by these simple but amazeballs effective little inventions. Especially if it's the brainchild of local Aussie geniuses.

But anyway, along with the "Thank you" letter that came in the same envelope was a 50% off promo code for my next purchase which brings it down to just $5!!! So I thought I'd share that with anyone who's either travelling soon or just want to add a lock to their room to block out pestering family members etc or whatever :) Enjoy!

LOL.. sorry I rant a bit :P .. but yeh there's the story for anyone who'd bother to read it. otherwise most people would just see the promo code and move on.

  • Not sure where it was designed and where the company is based, but the video on the website clearly shows the product is "Made in China".

    • +3

Yeh it is made in china. But the package came with a business card of the director of the company and their address is in Gympie QLD… that the fact that it arrived almost next business day also tells me it's not being shipped from China. But you're right, I'm not CERTAIN that it's Aussie owned company but I'm guessing it is. (hence I said "looks like" aussie company in my description)

    • +2

Everything is made in China, regardless of where it is designed and where all the profit goes. China makes all the iPhones but Apple and America get all the profits.

      • +1

well technically Apple doesnt ship its profits back to the usa they like to keep them in low tax nations eg Ireland, Holland etcetra… but yeah i know what you mean. google does this in Aust too, they made $2B in gross income and paid $76K in tax by using transfer pricing mechanisms…as do most international companies (and plenty of local ones).

      • Apple and America get all the profits

All? Doesn't the Chinese manufacturer make profit for its production service? And what about the retailer's mark up? etc.

    • +9

      Shipping is included.

  • +1

Sounds like a good concept, worthy of my $5. How have these guys not gone to bunnings and masters with this? Could be a $10 pack in the door handle section.

    • +8

I know someone who did just that, and went to Bunnings. Bunnings don't make it easy for manufacturers. The product's selling price was over $100, and Bunnings wanted three units for EVERY ONE of their stores. You also had to pay the Bunnings "promoters" to convince the stores to stock them, and then the promoters would supposedly train each store's staff about the product.

And after all that, Bunnings don't pay you when you give them the goods - their attitude is that it's still YOUR property, and they are just displaying it for you, so you get a check at the end of the month for however many units they have actually sold, less their percentage cut.

      • "their attitude is that it's still YOUR property"

So is the manufacturer out of pocket if someone shoplifts their stock? Rough deal.

      • hard being a manufacturer when big biz bullies babies

        • I agree. Did you know for Coles to even consider a line in their stores, you must move 20k in unit sales of that product every week nationally?

        • Surely that's only for them to stock if nationally. I've seen my local Coles have a trial of some items before when I've never seen them in any other store.

  • I wonder if you can kick it open.

    • if you can kick hard enough to actually break solid steel…

more likely, the door would break first…

      • +5

if the door breaks, you need this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4B0q41t1WFE

        • +1

          …or a claymore.
(Sword or mine, either would work)

        • Nice product, but i'm sure emergency workers won't like having to hack down each door to get to the occupants inside

  • +8

Door security. what about web security?

    • +13

This should be higher up. You can forgive the 15 year old design, and the broken links (such as the terms and conditions) but the data being sent from the credit card page isn't being done through SSL. It's really not safe. If you're going to buy this, you should be using their paypal option.

    • +2

Terribly ironic for a website with bouncers and door locks all over it.

  • +11

    The Testimonials look suspiciously fake

    http://qicklock.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=articl…

    • +15

      agreed

“What an ingenious design for an inexpensive, no fuss personal door lock! I am safe behind my bedroom
door from my teenage son and his friends pillow fights! Best $9.99 I have ever spent"

      wtf?

      • It's hardly ingenious, actually incredibly basic.
Looks like they've taken the locking device of old style slot and chain door locks and added a thin bit of cut steel, couple of cut outs and a small bend.
        Still worth a fiver.

        • +12

Nothing wrong with simple though. The world today is full of high-tech solutions for low-tech problems. Sometimes simple things that takes advantage of laws of physics are more impressive than a biometric access laser scan heat sensing sentinel machine gun behind the door (although the latter would be pretty cool too. but won't happen at $5 I don't think)

        • +4

          Building a sentry here?

        • Would love to. But eBay seems to be out of gatling cannons, and there are no Walmarts in Sydney so my plans are completely foiled. Bummer.

        • +2

It's a shame eBay are out, Customs wouldn't even pick up that there was a cannon in the parcel…

      • +7

yeh.. not sure about the web testimonials but I know I'm sufficiently impressed with what I got for $10 to go and spend some of my own time to post it up for anyone else who might be interested.. and I certainly aint gettin paid by anyone to post this. (Heck! I got my discount code AFTER I paid full price! Imagine how I feel! I must now email them and demand the difference to be refunded! Or not)

But feel free to make up your own mind though. We all have a dollar figure in mind where we tell ourselves "fk it, it's only $xx, so what if I get ripped off? it's not like I'll have to live off ration packs for the next month because of it". Not sure about other people but $10 was below my threshold when I bought it….and now it's only $5… Just sayin..

        • +1

Maybe you could hit them up if they get a bunch of sales through it, I was order no. 29. They may double their sales through your listing.

        • thanks Op! I actually think it's a pretty good bargain. Was just surprised at the above comment re: someone hiding behind their bedroom door away from their teenage son and his friends pillow fights.. didn't know people still had pillow fights not to mention teenage boys

        • +2

Nah.. not interested (in commissions if that's what ur hinting at). At the prices they're selling this thing it's pretty obvious they're not on a mission to make the next cover of Forbes. And if anyone from Qicklock reads this - dont ever change! There's already too much greed in this world. We need more down-to-earth people making stuff that average plebs like me can actually afford.

        • Grabbed a couple myself. Thanks OP. Orders now over 200.

  • nice, thanks op

  • +3

Isn't it easier to just scream "rape"?

In all seriousness, you're better off screaming "fire".

    The more you know…

    • BWAHAHAHAHA.. nah, nobody's gonna wanna rape me.. not even if they're gay… More like, I just don't want shifty people sneaking into my hotel room in the middle of the night to flog my iPad!

  • +2

Didn't even know this sort of thing existed! Just what this (more often than not) solo traveller likes :) Thanks!

  • +2

    Order 57!

    • +5

This guys mind is gunna be blown, sales doubled overnight!

    • how many doors are in your house ?

  • Order number 63 here, thanks Op.

  • i don't get it.. if you twist the door knob won't this thing fall to the ground? i must be missing something here

edit: nvm.. im capped and eventually the video loaded to see that thing dig into the hole :)

    • No because of the hook that goes in to the wall is the thing holding it in place. It's not hanging on to the door handle prong (or whatever you call the doobawhacky that goes in to the wall).

      • +1

i see you struggled with working out technical terms for door handle/lock/knob parts/areas too haha :)

        • +6

It's difficult to describe shit over the Internet.
I normally just point if I don't know the name, then it's called one of many things: that, thingy, thingamajig, whozitz, whatchamacallit, doobawhacky or whatever the f*^¥ that thing is.

If I tried to remember the name of all of the parts of shit that I point to then I'd probably forget how to cook steak or something equally as important… And f*^¥ that.

        • That part is called the Latch-bolt.

          http://www.watchingthenet.com/wp-content/uploads/image/visua…

I remember learning the names after I did a 30 minute class to install a new door handle at Bunnings haha.

  • Excellent deal! Thanks Op.

This is perfect for anyone who needs privacy for "When we get behind closed doors" for a little nookie :-)

Great for anyone sharing a house or apartment for those moments when you need privacy.

    Just bought two - thanks!

  • this one looks like a more elegant solution for me. Around 15 bucks on eBay though.

    • +2

this is made from toughened nylon, not sure how strong it is

  • +2

Web page claims these usage scenarios,

    EMBARRASSING SITUATION, PUBLIC PLACES, TRAVEL

but it won't work on public toilets with vandalised door locks. What situation will you find more embarrassing during travel than a broken public toilet door?

    • I think it might? If the door only opens inwards, it might work?

I don't think it would be as strong though. Would stop it swinging open though.

    • +2

"Hand-forged by the Gods of Olympus and ground into shape by the TEETH of the guys on our website."

"..so you can protect your privacy while studying pron"

"…also Doubles as an ATM DOS device"

"….GREAT as a prank on Fire Escapes at the movies"

"New updated version Coming Soon …. BLACK!"
      - Also available with Rectal Chastity attachment

  • +2

Can this be used to lock people in?

    • If a door opens outwards, then this will lock people in

    • +1

depends, how many people do you need this to lock in?

    • +5

      Locked in WHAT?

      Dexter? Is that you?

      • More like Ariel Castro

        • +1

          disturbing..

  • +1

    aLWAYS wanted something like this!

  • Thanks OP.
    Order 146. :)

  • +1

This is actually a very useful product. If you need to barricade yourself in a room because of a murderous rampaging psychopath then it may save your life.

    • murderous rampaging psychopath then it may save your life.

Not if the door is made of soft hollow wood, or has a weak door frame. In which case a few kicks can break down the door. I've had my garage door kicked down by some rebels last month.

      • +4

Are you sure they were Rebels and weren't fighting for the Empire? ;)

        • +1

"These are not the rebels you were looking for."

  • +8

Wish I had this when I was 15 and my father walked in on me…
    Anywayz ordered

    • Did you scream like the guy in the video?

  • +6

anyone else getting to the credit card page and realising its not secure? ie HTTPS:// ??

or is it just me? :\

    • +2

agreed… whole website didn't feel secure
A bit odd considering this is a security product

  • +1

Ugh, worst site ever. I clicked 'ok' or whatever it was on the last page, and it didn't automatically take me to Paypal. I figured that I had misclicked, so I did it twice more.

Three orders just appears in my inbox with sequential numbers. And I still don't know how to Paypal it.

  • Thanks OP, just ordered one. Order - 350

  • +1

How long before you lose the little latch thingy?

  • I don't know why I bought this…
    Order #389

  • order 402 :)

  • Hope there's stock.

    Order #410

  • Definitely buying one when the site is back up :)

This looks like the kind of thing that would have once been on Dragon's Den.

  • This was on Zazz last Friday. Think it was $10 + shipping on there, so good price here!

  • Just curious… can't one simply lock the door?

    • +1

      Not all doors have locks..

    • +1

Yes but staff may be able to unlock from outside and let themselves in. Also in some backpackers / cabin type places there might be no locks on the door.

This would have been great for my backpacking days!

  • Thanx op :)

  • Thanks, ordered 2. Up to order 443 now.

  • Thanks OP. Order 482!! =]

  • Bought one, thanks OP..:-P
