Deal:
I know Herald Sun has had the $1 for 28 days subscription for a while now, but until 31st March 2014 you can also get a $40 gift card to spend on whatever you like at Rebel in store or online. The gift card is sent to you within 14 days of subscription, giving you plenty of time to cancel. If you dont cancel, it then reverts to $4.00 per week.
You can also get the Sunday paper delivered in the $1 subscription too, but that reverts to $4.50 after the promotional period, which I think is pretty good value anyway

You can select any of the 4 subscriptions, which start at $1 - this includes the digital only bundle. You will receive a $40 Rebel Sports gift card

Based on the terms and conditions on the subscribe page - the rebel gift card will be sent out within 14 days, so presumably you could not cancel your subscription before then if you intend to.

You only pay $1 now via credit card or PayPal. Your subscription will renew in approx. 3 weeks. Based on registering today, my renewal is March 23rd and I would be charged $16 based on the plan I selected.

According to their FAQ's (once registered), their cancellation policy is as follows:

How much notice do I need to give to cancel my subscription?
Your digital access will be cancelled within 5 business days, but home delivery may continue for up to a further 5 business days (those of you in WA should allow up to 10 business days for deliveries to cease).

      I don't see why the OP should be punished for sharing this deal?
      Firstly: At the time of the post, this deal was relevant and accurate as per News Ltd's T&Cs.
      Secondly: The OP has taken his time to since update the post to keep those informed of the change to the T&Cs (not his fault) and also marked this deal as "Expired".
      Thirdly: We all god the telegraph delivered for 4 weeks for only $1. That in itself is a good enough deal.
      Lastly: Gift Cards are apparently on their merry way to our houses. Still worth waiting is it not?

        Thanks stolnik. I still havent got my gift card yet. I hold little hope I will receive it. That is purely based on the fact I also won a footy and have not received it yet either. So unless they are screwing people who won the footy as well, I hold a small glimmer of hope they just have a really really unorganised promotions team that for some reason take at least a month to send something out. If I dont get my footy I will be very unhappy. Not sure what auhorities to take that one too, but im pretty certain having prize draws is pretty governed and has lots of rules they would be breaking if I dont receive that footy.

    This evening they called me and apologized for delay of the gift card and the guy who spoke with told me definitely I'll be send a card. They have a slight delay of processing the card. When I cancelled the subscription I mentioned in my email, I got the subscription before changing the t/c. Hoping I will receive.

      If it does go past the 45 days remember that you can still do a credit card chargeback with your bank (if you paid via credit card as a funding source). I know it seems petty over $1 but I will be doing it for sure if i don't receive my gift voucher.

      I cancelled my PayPal agreement and they are still saying it's coming in the mail… I keep getting emails about the payment being declined, but it doesn't seem to matter.

    Have not received any confirmation from news limited with logged in detail to the online newspaper. I have rang up their support and they could not find my detail but yet continued to take money out of my paypal account. Their support have requested that I logged a dispute claim via paypal as they could not find my detail. This is likely to be a scam. Not Happy.

      That's a good reason to choose the digital option. If you never received the paper then they could argue a valid contract never existed, and hence you're not eligible for the gift card. It would be a colossal dick move, but I wouldn't put it past them.

    Just called up the promotions department and it's actually quite funny how embarrassing this is for them.
    They advised me initially that I would receive the card by 07/04/2014. Didn't receive it and now they cannot give an ETA, but assured me that it will be settled within 3 weeks.

    I had asked if they had actually sent out any gift cards at all and their response was "No, we are still waiting to collate all the data from news crop as well as obtain an approval from our head office before we can send anything". So what this actually means is that this "backlog" is not because of a flawed process. Why would you wait to collate ALL data before sending? Surely they can send it to those who have been confirmed like myself?

    Ah well. Winter is coming… and hopefully my GC is too.

        I think it is more likely that we're waiting on the News Ltd lawyers as they desperately try to find some loophole exemption which gets them out of honouring the deal.

        Unfortunately for them I think they have been severely blindsided by the collective might of Ozbargain, and 10's of thousands of rabbid bargain hunters (including yours truly) waiting to capitalise on opportunities such as this.

    I have been getting follow up emails. The last one was yesterday, asking if I've received it. Just replied to them and got a reply within 5 minutes, saying they have resolved the delays, and I should be receiving the GC by 14/4. And if I don't, I've been fobbed off to call the 1800 850 516 number. Hmmm….

      this promise of 14/4 delivery sounds very suspicious, so close to the 45 day claims window for Paypal. I've sent then an email to ask about it, if the response isn't good will probably have to put in a claim just in case.

        Remember that you can usually do a credit card chargeback with your bank up to 6 months after the transaction took place. It's a bit more involved than a paypal claim though.

          depends on the card issuer….some will let you file a chargeback over the phone. others, like bankwest and anz, you just have to download a form, fill it, provide supporting info and fax it them.

      Largely tongue in cheek, but I added this to the escalation:
      "Please consider terminating their PayPal account to avoid further theft."

      I sincerely hope everyone that purchased this raised a PayPal dispute. It certainly looks like they can't be bothered responding to each claim and are just letting them get escalated.

        The problem is if you receive a chargeback (of $1 haha), I don't think you are entitled to the gift card anymore as you will have received a full refund. Same thing Paypal. So if I was News Ltd I;d hoping to get a lot claims through Paypal and refund $1 immediately and avoid having to send the gift card worth $40.

          Good point. If you want to screw news limited the most if they never end up delivering on this gift card it's better to do a chargeback than a paypal dispute - reason being is that merchants are charged about $20 per chargeback! I would recommend if news limited don't deliver that as many people as possible do chargebacks over the $1 amount just to cost news limited money

    I'm just sad that I lost my Gold access to the AFL SuperCoach section. I guess three failed PayPal attempts was enough of an indicator for them to turn off this on my account on 7 April. Luckily I did my Round 4 trades already. :-)

    Was pretty useful though so might pay another $1 for a month of use.
