Deal:
I know Herald Sun has had the $1 for 28 days subscription for a while now, but until 31st March 2014 you can also get a $40 gift card to spend on whatever you like at Rebel in store or online. The gift card is sent to you within 14 days of subscription, giving you plenty of time to cancel. If you dont cancel, it then reverts to $4.00 per week.

You can select any of the 4 subscriptions, which start at $1 - this includes the digital only bundle. You will receive a $40 Rebel Sports gift card

Based on the terms and conditions on the subscribe page - the rebel gift card will be sent out within 14 days, so presumably you could not cancel your subscription before then if you intend to.

You only pay $1 now via credit card or PayPal. Your subscription will renew in approx. 3 weeks. Based on registering today, my renewal is March 23rd and I would be charged $16 based on the plan I selected.

According to their FAQ's (once registered), their cancellation policy is as follows:

How much notice do I need to give to cancel my subscription?
Your digital access will be cancelled within 5 business days, but home delivery may continue for up to a further 5 business days (those of you in WA should allow up to 10 business days for deliveries to cease).

    I just cancelled the pay pal reoccurring payment. So technically i'm still signed up till the end of the month. (I.e that's what the $1 was for, 4 weeks)

    I get the feeling newscorp don't really give a squat about a bunch of ozbargainers who are taking up the time of their call centre operators and were never going to provide them more than $1.00 each in revenue. I've cancelled by sub with every newspaper and given up.

    Hi everyone,

    First time registered / commenting, long time OzBargainer otherwise!

    I signed up to this deal on the 1st of March.

    I just gave the Herald Sun a call then, they didn't say anything about a backlog, just that it was 14 business days rather than 14 days.

    The lady said my card was on its way and that I can cancel and still receive my card, which I did over the phone.

    Hopefully that helps someone - I paid via CC.

    I just wish to share with my fellow ozBargainers, as I have not read a similar experience as of yet.

    Has anyone been told by the Customer Service hotline that as they had signed up unattended through the online portal that you 'must' have picked a different subscription and not The Footy offer subscription as it is not showing on your account subscription on their system.

    Hence you are not on the mailing list for the Gift Card.

    I find this truly odd, as I clearly remember the page and clicking the link from that page (and deliberating whether to select digital or with Sunday paper as the option fwiw).

    Any similar experiences?

    Changed my account payment from PayPal to a credit card number that I cancelled last year. Went through fine. Then I cancelled my recurring payment from within PayPal.

    Just spoke to a lady on the phone and she confirmed that I qualify for the $40 and that she will send my address details to their marketing dept. to make sure I will be receiving the gift card.
    I am not convinced though, she sounded like she was lying, hm….

    I just used someone elses template to send them a contact email when u sign into their online website saying i want this cancelled straight away and expect the gift card to be on its way and if the contract is broken i will go to ACCC and dispute it :) not much more u can do but i think if a lot of people say this and dispute it then wont it look bad somehow on their ratings or somethings?

    I signed up on the basis I would receive the $40 Rebel Sport Gift Card, and around 24hrs after signing up I received an email stating I qualified for it, and I didn't need to do a thing, that it would be in the mail in 14 days. Well I have yet to see this, so why should I continue my membership when you can't honour your agreement?

     

    Some friends have been told it should be received within 14 business days, well that's today and I doubt it's even been mailed.

     

    So cancel my subscription, and I still want my Gift Card as there was nothing in the terms and conditions when I signed up stating I had to be subscribed for a certain period of time. Honour your end of the agreement or I will be contacting the ACCC over the breach of your own terms and conditions.

    Rang customer service today and explained I hadn't received my rebel gift card. She explained that because there was such high demand for them it was probably delayed and give it another week. She said "if you only ever wanted the rebel gift card I can cancel your subscription"!! I did cancel the subscription and she said "you probably won't get your card now". I told her by law I should still get the card but wasn't going to argue with her. I will send an email though. Oh well, 2 sunday papers for a buck was ok… never looked at the digital copies.

    Someone in the marketing department has blown their entire year's marketing budget on one dumb idea and is now going "ohh shoot". Would love to get Rupert Murdoch's personal email to complain. I once emailed a CFO of a company simply by guessing his email would be [email protected] and it worked and I got some action. Maybe try [email protected]

    Just got this response from using one of the templates:

    Dear Navyblues,

    We are sorry to hear that you wish to cancel your news+ subscription.

    As you signed up for the subscription on 1 March 2014 you are still eligible for the Rebel Sport voucher as the original terms and conditions stated. We have had to change the Terms and conditions because of people abusing the offer and cancelling straight away. This offer was meant to encourage subscribers, not for people to get a $40 voucher for $1.

    There has been a high demand for the offer as you can imagine, so the vouchers may take a little longer to arrive, you should expect to receive the voucher by the end of this week and you can call 1800 850 516 if you have not received it by Monday.

    I have now cancelled your subscription effective immediately.

      It really depends on which Script Monkey responds to your e-mail and telephone call. As the author of one of the templates, I have received zilch from News Limited. This is after three separate e-mails and one telephone call over the course of 5 days. I've only ever received the standard "you are important to us" brush off.

    Just sent a cancellation email using one of the templates provided.
    I will be following this up with a phone call tomorrow to both New Limited and Rebel Marketing to ensure I will still be receiving the gift card.

    Would love to get their "Yes you will be receiving your GC" in a written form rather than over the phone. I will just have to request they action my pending cancellation and respond back accordingly.

    Will let you guys know how this turns out.

          You can change your payment details to paypal and then cancel authorization for recurring payments. Then you don't have to worry about them cancelling your account in time and whatnot as there is no instant "cancel subscription" button.

    Guys, I also received an email from them advising me that I'll still be eligible for the gift card even though I'm cancelling.

    To be honest though, I kind of do feel bad as I know morally it's not right to take advantage of a genuine offer like this =( anyone else feeling the same way or is it just me?

      I have no moral objections.

      Lots of companies are willing to pay people to try out their product: think of all the ING accounts with $50 cash-back or all the credit cards with lots of frequent flyer miles when you open the account. Or more extreme: casinos who offer a free meal to get people to visit (hoping to get them hooked on gambling).

      All those companies do the calculation of how much the promotion costs them in payments to people who leave after getting the benefit vs. how much they earn from people who stay with them for the long run. If a promotion does not work as intended it won't be repeated (or the T&C get changed ;-)).

      In any case it is just business. Would you feel bad for buying a share that then rises in the weeks that follow? Do you think about the poor seller who could have received more for it if he had held on?

      That's just the world we live in. I don't like it much, but short of the communist revolution I see no way of changing it.

      Of course you can have a different approach to life when you swap your home brew for veggies from your neighbour's garden. But in the corporate word loyalty is a word that can only be used by someone else to your disadvantage.

    Now that people who are cancelling are getting Email confirmation confirming GC will still be sent out if you haven't cancelled your paypal payment now is the time to do so. If you didn't pay via paypal and haven't paid yet you may be able to switch your payment method to paypal and then cancel it. Tomorrow will be the last day to cancel but as we're getting email confs of GC's being sent out not really any reason to wait.

    Called the 1800 number posted here for Rebel Sport Gift Cards. They said they had not gotten any information about me from the magazine so I would not be processed until they got these details. They took my details and I think they would confirm it or something. They did NOT add me to any list on the spot.

    Anyway, who cares, I un-authorized the payments from paypal today. Don't think I can be bothered chasing this up for the next x weeks, doesn't seem like they have any intention of honoring this anyway.

    I just cancelled the PayPal ongoing payments, couldn't be stuffed doing their cancellation procedure. Hopefully that's enough to kill the contract.
    Got absolutely nothing for my big $1 spend. No papers, no digital viewing and obviously no gift card.

    I logged online and submited a cancel request.
    They reply saying that I was getting good value and they never cancelled my account!
    They took money out from CC and never delivered the GC.
    On top of this I didn't access any of the online News :-(

    I haven't got the $40 gift card, I've paid herald sun $17 now for a terrible product. You can read the downloaded newspaper offline???? And I can't figure out how to cancel. This is the first time I've felt completely shafted on ozbargain.

        I got all monies refunded ($18 + 4Cents) by:-

        1) Raising a paypal dispute.
        2) Emailing News Ltd to cancel subscription asap and refund all money.

        Their Customer Service rep (AU based) was friendly. He called only to confirm what I wanted and said, I will do that right now, no problems.

    Hey guys, I signed up two accounts on the 1st.. One for myself and one for my partner at different addresses..

    I had totally forgot about signing up to this deal and I have now been charged $16.00 and $18.00 for the accounts..

    I have still not received any gift vouchers and only received two wet newspapers on my front lawn.. I am unsure about my partners house..

    I have switched the payments over to a PayPal account so I can cancel the renewals..

    Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? or if there is a way to get my $434.00 back??
